  • 78 years ago, Shirley temple made her Final Film for fox studios. at this point Shirley was growing up and the studio didn't know how to handle it. this movie was colorized for VHS in the 1980's and was not re-colorized for the DVD. I'm sorry for the bad quality.

God knew what He was doing when through Him, man invented technology, to make movies like this. I was feeling a little under the weather, and thought to play a Shirley movie, and just seeing her happy sun-shiny face, made me smile. She was a very special child. Can't count the number of people she brought joy to their heart.
I absolutely love Jack Oakie, and Charlotte Greenwood's acting, singing and dancing skills. Hollywood always amaze me how they can pick the right people, for the right part, and they fit like a puzzle.

You can learn a lot about history watching old movies. This one I believe was made in 1940 and shows the ongoing clash of values between small town New England and it's elders and it's young people with a big shot of big city liberalism. This was the last "little girl" movie Shirley Temple made. Jack Okie and Charlotte Greenwood were very well known character actors.
    RIP to all of them

It's a message about political contrasts. Notice the support of the Roosevelt administration and the opposition of the townspeople and their resistance to progress. Typical of many small towns that are very Republican.

Her last film for Fox. You can tell that this is almost a farewell film to Shirley's childhood roles.
After this film wrapped, there was a pause in her career and then she went on to teenage and young adult parts at MGM, RKO and other studios.

Later on, Shirley made a charming film, " Kiss And Tell".
Guess the public longed for the sweet child they'd come to love, but I reckon Shirley did a good job as a teenager , whatever she did!
In Kiss And Tell, I love the character " Raymond", who often says, " Well I think it's all very dumb !"
And Shirley's boyfriend "Dexter" 's frequent response to events is, "Holy Cow !"
      Enjoy!

While a bit formulaic, this was a nice closure to Shirley Temple's career at Fox. They cleverly made use of sequences from her past movies to add to the story, which was a nice touch. They are to be commented for the effort to make a nice closure of this nature, as Shirley was already 12 years old and had reached the end of the magic of her childhood.

Shirley was in a series of films called "baby burlesks" before she became super famous and she did feel sexually exploited (talked about it as an adult) because of the subject matter and some of the things she was required to do and say as a 3 or 4 year old. I would say she was definitely overused by Hollywood and exploited, but she did manage to go on to become a well-adjusted adult.

That sign in the town hall meeting said The Essence of a Democracy is very wrong. We are not a
    Democracy, we are a Republic.
"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
The United States isn't like a republic, it IS a republic. In a democracy, the majority makes all the decisions while the minority are left to fend for themselves. In a Republic, representatives are chosen to represent all the people, and the representatives make the decisions.

By the way, the word Democracy has nothing to do with Democrat. Used in that context, To!e was a Republic at one time, Greece was also a Republic and a Democracy at the same time. China is a Republic too, but it is Communist as well, and there are Countries that are a Republic as well as a Democracy. The US is both as well, because We elect our Leaders. Democracy means that the People Rule. A Republic is merely a form of Government which power is also held by the People, but that has an elected President rather than a King. A Government with a King is a Monarchy. However any Republic can have a Capitalistic, or Communist Political System.

Unfortunately this along with her previous film, The Blue Bird were both major box office disappointments for Temple. For the 1st time her films were losing money and Twentieth Century Fox unceremoniously dumped Shirley after this films release. Her career would never be the same after this.
