Video Text:
Derive is an urban exploration application influenced by Situationist thought on the experience of urban space.
The Derive app can be viewed on a mobile phone. The application will deliver a task card meant to be an instigator in an urban exploration, every 3min a new task card is dealt, changing the course of the journey. These task cards aim to create new urban experiences for the user by overlaying the personal viewpoints of the tasks onto the urban exploration. So the card you submitted a week ago could alter the experience of a user today.
So who and what are the Situationists?
The Situationist International, formed in 1957, as a movement they represented an international reaction to the capitalist way of understanding urban space and modernism. The situationists used the Derive, meaning to drift, as a means to understand how modern cities were fragmenting in function, character and energy. They used it as a tool, to intertwine the subjective and the objective experience of the physical space of a city. The Derive was a way to escape a mundane every-day experience of urban space, such as going to work or shopping, now, the Derive App has been created for a new authentic take on the re-thinking of urban planning in contemporary cities.
The Derive application has been built as an open source project, able to be added to by the public, it will grow and change over time.
You have the chance to add to you own city, or to create new experiential derives (such as night tasks, acting directions, photography experiments), its up to you as part of the urban enthusiast community to decide. Try Derive today and if your interested; find out how easy it is to add your own content to Derive.
