BMW N57 engine knock noise - solved. Timing chain, rod bearing or something else?

  • Hello everyone, in this video I want to show you something that I experienced recently
    it is really important for those of you who has BMW N57 or BMW N47 engines!
    In this particular vehicle BMW F10 5 series (530d) - the car came with knocking noise when on IDLE
    but when you rev it, the noise reduces.
    At the end I found that the noise is coming from the Vibration Damper!
    Here I will show you 2 options to test from where the noise is coming :
    1. Remove belt and start the engine
    2. Remove the vibration damper and start the engine.
    In my case I had installed brand new vibration damper from Continental- turns out that this one is heavier than the original. In this case the only solution is to install OEM Vibration damper!

    I know the video is a year old but for future readers here’s my 50p worth of input.
    N57 do suffer from crankshaft bearing failure … more common on unserviced / long service interval examples. The bearings wear down and become uneven causing the crankshaft to come off its centre axis. The removal of the belt in this video proves that. Eventually this motor would start leaking oil from the crankshaft outer seal due to the momentum from the crankshaft itself.
    The bearings are like shims that sit between the block and the camshaft, if you do have this problem you may as well replace the bearings and camshaft is there’s any damage to it (I hope not).
    I’d also stretch the budget snd replace timing chain, tensioner and guides while I had the engine out.

    My alternador got broken ...i changed for another one since then my engine makes way more noise then before , what can be ?

    Have same noise but louder on off only on idle. Its not injectors as intested them. Need to take belt off and check that crank pulley but noise seems to come from intake side (top right) where also alternator is

    I do have f30 with the same engine. No noises or anything for 8 years old car however.. Egr cooler done twice under the recall (2020 and 2022). Last week It did have the egr stuck open and as a result it melted the inlet manifold size of 1 pound coin hole. It could have set a fire I got really lucky. Never had any issues with the car before for 5 years of ownership. Great engines but now I am really scared to push the car. The garage which fixed the car said I should be fine as they put the cooler constantly on but I have anxiety and opened the bonnet like 5 times already lol.

    It's a diesel. Sounds fine to me.

    I currently have this same exact issue, I fitted a pattern crankshaft pulley 2 months ago, and have done about 1000 miles and have just inherited this noise, it sounds like it’s coming from the top end though which is puzzling to me

    What is the brand to go for then if not continental? Who supplied these crank pulleys (crank damper) for bmw. Bmw wants 600 quid for theirs lol no chance

    Hi, after replacing the pulley, my car makes this exact noise. I also feel slight vibrations in the cockpit. They are not always, just for a while. The mechanic says it's not possible. He chose the Contitech brand. Was everything ok after replacing it with the original?

      buy 2nd hand.. original bmw for the same motor.. continental is hevier that is why there is disbalance and vibration..

      the one that installed .. is continental.. that is why I posted the video.. tell your mechanic to return that piece of crap.. and reimburse you.. that is well known issue..

    ЗДРАВЕЙ КОЛЕГА ИМАМ СЛЕДНИЯ ПРОБЛЕМ BMW e46 320d 136hp няма мощност и при набиране на тласаци до 3к обората и на място като и подам газ до 3к оборота повече от 3к обората не може като и във движение така и на свободен ход ... ..след това почва да трепери все едно ще огасне...и колата повече от 110км не може все едно ми изключва турбото някой път и на по малки скорости го прави ако може да дадеш некъв съвет???

    i have similar problem...mine when is cold almost you cant notice but when it gets warm its really noticeable and it disapers with reving only noticeable below 1500rpms

      check your vibration damper if it’s cracked

      Hi mine does the same pulley rubber has small cracks in can it be the problem

      @@reynermiljo7332 remove that and start car without it. dont drive it because water pump is powered by belt. if noise is still happening, remove engine. mine rod bearings are fućk€d up

      @@reynermiljo7332 Also remove oil filter, if it has small metal shavings deep in it, that is engine 100%.
