Barkha, you've nailed it! I have watched several Tavleen Singh interviews trying to figure out her way of seeing things. She has this tendency of being personal and anecdotal, often reflecting her ironic insider-outsider position as the Durbar Elite. The way in which you fenced off her jibe at you about Gujarat riots and the elan with which you steered her to a revelation of her own insecurities -- are indeed laudable. Throughout the interview, there is also an undertone of your similarities (and dissonances) with her which keeps us hooked. This one is for the archives!

The divide always existed because we saw nothing but appeasement politics up until 2014. At every level of crime, a Hindu was always made to be guilty and a Muslim the victim. It still is like that in Bangalore atleast. As a Hindu we got the courage of fighting back only after 2014. Pls, every platform should stop blaming Modi for all this. It’s not correct!!!

For a 80 % majority which has always had it way even during nehrus days it's amazing.
It's nothing to do with appeasement. It everything to do with a religion which is just twisted and turned modified at whim of people that everyone knows that nothing remains of it which is true or coherent.
It's this unconscious knowledge deep down which brings out the anger. Please dont be invested so much in what is not your creation. You are what you make of yourself not what you were born into. Explore the truth and free yourself of the trauma you have hoisted on yourself. That is not your burden to carry.

So she intentionally asked Her son to put Salman Taseer's nationality as British as he has British passport while clearly knowing he is a Pakistan politician with Pakistan passport. PIO application clearly mentions that one of your ancestors or you should not belong to Pakistan and Bangladesh. So it's literal cheating he system and now got caught 😅😅😅.

Tavleen Singh had an affair with a married Pakistan People's Party politician, Salman Taseer. He came to India to promote a book and their own son has stated on record that the affair between his parents lasted a little less than a week. Not entirely sure that this woman is the epitome of good choices and insight. She states that she couldn't believe what happened in Gujarat, but was witness to what happened to the Sikhs in Delhi. How come she doesn't speak on what happened to Punjabi Hindus in Punjab at the hands of her own community, the Jatt Sikhs. Colleges raided and sh/t (Colleges tended to be majority Hindu as they prioritized education), people dragged out of buses and those self-identifying as Hindu and/or noticed to have a mauli on their wrist, were singled out and shot in the head, Kharku's raided pinds and would terrorize Hindus houses; making the family members make them cha and pakore then have their way with the women and sh/ot everyone in the family when they were done, even children. Articles of the atrocities were reported on on the ground even by the LA Times half a world away. Yet she, a special correspondence reporter (ie. ground reporter) for a newspaper didn't witness the atrocities going on and happening to my people? Ironic.

Tavleen, I do not understand you. You say that Rajiv G was justified the sikh genocide/riots and you personally saw the horrors perpetuated on the sikh population - yet you befriended RG and SG? Was it your journalistic desire to be close to "inside news" or otherwise. Honestly I find it very tough to understand - if I had seen such horrors perpetuated, I would certainly stay away from the person who even remotely justified this.
I was in the army and my brigade was mobilized with small arms (no heavy weaponry) immediately after IG's death. We were in Delhi within 7 hours (from Roorkee) - this was in addition to the existing army in Delhi. YET, we were confined to barracks and not utilized for quelling the situation. I could not even go to meet my own Grandparents who were in Lajpat Nagar and whose house was attacked numerous time! Those were the times and in my personal opinion RG was fully responsible for non-action to prevent this massacre.
A miniscule (comparative terms - and again non-justifiable) riot in Gujarat and Modi was hounded/is hounded. Why no media outrage at RGs role - neither then nor today. Lets be fair and call a spade a spade.
Wearing your friendship with RG on your sleeve is distasteful and dis-honest.

    • @FarhanAmin1994

I am sorry to learn of the difficult time you faced back in ’84 and salute you for your service. I think as concerns her friendship with RG-SG, it pre-dated the ’84 riots. She lays it all out in detail in her 2012 book Durbar, including her coverage of the awful, terrible riots of ’84.
As for why Mr Rajiv Gandhi was not criticized enough-though he should have been, it is perhaps because the riots coverage was not televised in those times (unlike 2002 and later) and hence people did not see the ugliness of them. Add to that the clear sympathy for him after Mrs Gandhi, the then PM, was assassinated-earning the INC 415/543 LS seats in 1984-5.

No one justified anything here. Stating a reason or comparison are entirely qualitatively different. The comparison-even if seemingly rude-serves to show us the larger trends and the total spatiotemporal picture of things such as what happens in the aftermath of awful tragedies wrt media coverage and public perception.
