- Опубликовано: 27 ноя 2024
- What can you do if your ram pump needs to be in a specific place and so does the water intake but there is too much head pressure? Well lets explore what happens when you increase the height of the waste valve so that the input head pressure is reduced.

Hello! Can i run this pump 4 liters per minute water source?
Don't sweat the critics. Losers will always complain about someone else's operation, but never get off their own a$$ to work, help or show a better way. As far as I can see, you are the RUclips authority on ram pumps. Keep up the good work.
Agreed!!
Actual experience here-
A cold weather ram pump will keep running continuously in sub zero weather if it is in tune and not subject to intermittent stoppage which would cause the pump to freeze and destroy itself.
If it is dependable and runs continuously, it will form a turtle like shell of ice around itself.
It is amazing to see how the temperature of the warm water feeding the pump balances with the cold air.
One caveat though, when the weather gets slightly warmer, the shell thins out and can droop onto the escape valve and if it obstructs the flow, it can possibly stop the action and cause the pump to freeze when the temperature drops once again.
Been there, done that.
Best wishes as you travel down life's road. God has a plan for you.
I ran a pump 5 years ago in 15 degree weather and it made some incredible ice sculptures. The thing that finally stopped the pump was ice climbing up 5+ feet into the delivery pipe and clogging it. Once the output stopped the pump froze up.
Another very interesting video, Seth. I enjoy all your video's. Everyone who watches picks up on something different. Don't let naysayers determine your direction. Us that are interested in learning enjoy your teaching. ALL THE BEST.:)
I appreciate you being so transparent in the videos. I look forward to you getting back into the swing of new normal soon.
Oh! The cold weather test would be great to see. My husband and I were talking about only being able to use a ram pump seasonally due to being in Ohio. Im interested to see the testing and results! Have a wonderful day
Lots of standing in the cold I have a feeling. I do have some customers in Canada who use ram pumps in the very cold weather. Lets hope that I can manage a working design for most of the season.
Thanks for sharing man! It's very interesting. I have a drawing of the making of a ram that was featured in a 1960's edition of popular mechanics. I found the article on a micro fiche back in the early 90's. We made a copy of it, but here it is 2021 and still haven't tried making one yet.
I appreciate you explaining it as you go along.
That is great! The ram pump has been in use for a very long time. Perhaps this next summer is the time you get to play in the water!
Count me in for being interested to see how they fare in the cold weather!! Initial (uneducated) questions in my head: can you 'winterize' it for overnight lows then us in day time, what area freezes up or is the fail point (pressure tank maybe). Get well soon & see ya on the next video!
I have a few Canadian customers that have pumps running in very cold temps. I think the key is keeping the delivery pipe underground and the drive pipe insulated. The pump itself can be covered by a tote. I guess we will just have to try all the ideas.
When one kid gets sick the whole family gets sick. Lets hope it lasts a couple days and then goes away.
I appreciate how you do your videos, cause you do it your way, and a lot of the time it might be not complicated but we always get something out of them.
Non complicated is how I roll. Thank you for watching.
Keep sharing your learnings mate, I know I really appreciate the effort you put in. Great stuff. Cheers
I do hope to continue making videos. Just wrote down 30+ ideas.
Love watching the ram pump videos we’re buying a house in Nc mountains with a stream and waterfall on it and we’re totally going off grid.
NICE! It takes a lot to go totally off grid. I cut down my power by a 1/4 with hydro and solar. That clothes dryer is hard to get away from.
You are doing a fine job, Seth. A lot of $hit on your plate. Do what you can. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. I think that things will settle down soon.
great vid as always i have always wondered if adding two pressure tanks to the ram pump instead of one if it will increase back pressure making it easier and quicker to fill the delivery pipe or would it hinder preformance
I would not have thought of that on my own. Choking off the valve like you mention would be my go-to. Tilting the valve would do it too but as we discussed, that's not a good idea to put into the heads of customers.
Ha yes I have mentioned that in email before and it often gets lost in translation. Adding another short pipe to the waste valve might be an easy solution for people.
@@LandtoHouse A stronger spring in the in-line check valve should also solve the problem with to low back pressure. Can you change/adjust the spring in that in-line check valves?
Your dedication to shorts and a t-shirt is admirable. Keep up the good work, your content is a mild-mannered and educational breath of fresh air, RUclips is lucky to have you.
Great Job Seth! Keep on truckin.... Now you can stay in your nice warm shop/house for the next vids!
Im hoping this solution will solve my issues tomorrow. I think at this point I've watched every one of your ram pump videos 🤣 I have a ton of head pressure and cant get it to cycle
Did it work?
I really appreciate all your vids, you have saved me a ton of time and I have learned a lot from you. Keep up the great work,
Thank you. Happy to hear I have saved you time! I have a lot more videos in the works.
جرب يكون انبوب الادخال والاخراج بنفس الحجم لانني اعتقد بأن انبوب الاخراج لو يكون بحجم كبير لكان تدفق الناء اكثر .
Seth, I'm curious if adding or subtracting volume in the chamber would create the same affects as raising the check valve. Any idea?
Also, Take the negative comments with a grain of salt. While some maybe trying to give constructive criticism, others are just being negative for lack of better things to do. As with the 95% or better of all people watching your videos, I've enjoyed them all. Thank you for your research on these pumps and sharing them with the world.
Great video. I think the stand pipe might accomplish this better. You taught me about the stand pipe. I had way too much fall.
Thank you. Yes too much fall can be a pain. When you cant see the output to know that the water just pours out and never cycles the pump.
What I'm seeing is that the final input head pressure is determined by the height difference between the source input and the waste valve. We normally see the waste valve very close to the base of the pump assembly. Elevating that valve reduces the height offset from the input source - reducing the drop to that waste valve.
Given this... if you have a scenario in which you want to use that waste water in a secondary system you may be able to direct it to a secondary pump. It would be interesting to see if that secondary pump will function with the intermittent supply.
Naysayers need to post their own well thought out ram pump videos! The stuff you've done with ram pumps and hydro has been great in my opinion.
Perhaps they are just used to watching videos that have a higher production value. LTH is a "Seth steps out of the house with a camera" kind of production.
You're too kind!
If I understand this effect right the experiment result suggests that input pressure and end pressure may be taken into ratio becomes a requirement to satisfy pump cyclic.
Source head must track with end head by a ratio.
you have to pay your sister to look after her own family that's rough thanks for all your hard work putting videos out it's probably a good distraction for you but a better one would be to find the one there is good ones out there
My sister and I have a really good relationship. I am happy to pay her to watch the kids 1 day a week. It helps her out a lot and really helps me get my videos filmed. I might date again someday but not for at least another year or two.
Nice video.
I see nothing wrong with your videos. Then I know I don't have the exact same conditions you achieved this under and I have the alter them a little. So hey, I'm a human. If it works for and not for me, I'm not going to cry about it, I'll make a work around, alter it in a tiny way. So it does work.
We aren't still driving around in the old crank handles carriages (cars) of the past.
"Ingenuity is the mother of invention"
Thank you for watching. I hope to do several more full installs in 2022. That always helps people to see new land layout for a ram pump.
The correct response to somebody impolite enough to say "Your videos aren't well thought out" is "I shall refund you every penny you paid". Or, and this would be my preference, instructions on exactly where they should go.
Yes the proper youtube reply. You get what you paid for. Maybe even less haha.
I came across a round slide rule on Google giving info on the head, pipe diameter etc. From that it looks like you can have joy by increasing your input pipe diameter...
Highly creative, this was a joy to see, thank you for sharing.
I am happy that it was shared in email. I think this idea will help a few people.
Don't care about the haters dude, you don't need to justify anything lol.
There were enough of them that I felt I should let people know whats going on behind the scenes. I am still going to carry on as always though. Just wrote down over 30 video ideas!
@@LandtoHouse Far out!
Your video was great, keep posting them I'm learning
Thank you. I just wrote down a bunch of videos for the next few months.
I very much enjoy all of your videos. Do what you can, when you can. We will still be here. Thanks for this video, I was wondering how you could vary the pump for optimal output.
Running the max possible head pressure and minimal lift is the best. Also tilting the waste valve to the hard close position increases output.
I have a patent pending invention to keep legs and arms warm in cold weather. I will name them "long sleeved shirts and long pants" 🤑
Brilliant! You will do well!
bhahhaha....I'll bet your neighbors think you're crazy dude! I know you are....but I bet they think you are bhahahha! Love it...can't wait to have ya on the farm helping with my next little solar water project! #stoneyridgefarmer
HAHA I cant tell you how many times my neighbor has driven by on his ATV and just stopped and staired at my random water pipes laying in the yard. I know he watches the videos but still finds it funny to see the setup.
My schedule should be more consistent soon when the court stuff is over.
Do you have any thoughts on the coiled tube/paddle wheel type pumps? I have slow moving, almost flat water so a ram pump seams to be a non starter for me.
I like seeing the kids in the videos but I can see them also getting in the way since they are so young especially when your messing with electricity
When I do electrical work I keep them far away. For ram pump stuff I like them learning but when its 40 degrees not so much. My daughter gets cold at 65 degrees. haha
What if I don't have enough lift on the river, but the river flows pretty fast, what advice do you have for that?
Would a smaller diameter supply line give you the required backpressure uphill? Seems like a garden hose is too big for the hight uphill.... similar to cutting back the outlet on off valve?
Would placing the extended pipe ABOVE the valve act as a weight on the valve accomplishing the same or similar effect?
Is it possible to make the Waste Valve tubing in a form of a coil than extending it vertically? Will it work? And if so will it be efficient?
If your extended pipe goes downwards using a spring check valve, the amount and height of lifting water will be more?
try to prove it please!
Can the waist pipe be a bit higher then the water source so it could back flow the waste water back to the source so your pump area is dry?
The invention called "long pants" will keep your legs warm.
That Was Great Again, So Now What Would Happen if You Used A Bigger ,Say 2 inch Stand Pipe Would it Work & Wouldn't it Need To Be Shorter ,Just A Thought & or How Would it Work,Or Would it Work at All If All The Pipes Were Bigger??? Just A Thought
Nicely done. Hope all goes well. 👍
Thank you. Yes it will all workout in the end.
Can you put the water coming out of the valve back into the white container and spin the water in a circle?Thank you!!
should experiment how long of a pressure tube is most efficient.. especially for maintenance without pump stopping every 4 months...
Love your stuff good sir. Keep doing what you can. :-)
Can you reroute the waste water back to the bucket and cycle it through the pump again?
I live in Florida so no drop... but i have 200 gallons a min running thru. Is there a way to run a ram pump with pressure from flow?
Thank you bro, I am learning.
What is the maximum head pump if I would have the ram pump about 5 to 6 feet above the creek?
Very nice video i will make this in my garden in the philippines cebu central visayas
That is a great use for the ram pump.
Merry Christmas
can you use a man-made ram pump with a man-made filter system to filter a pond?
Nice set up. Is there any difference on the output per minute for the extended waste valve?
Good question. Without the extended pipe the pump did not work because there was too much head pressure and not enough lift. So technically there was a lot more output with the extended waste valve. There is a sweet spot where the output is the highest just before the pump stops working.
@@LandtoHouse thanks for the info. Will try it soon
I just had a thought. What if you left the check connected to the pump and put the extra pvc into the check that would actually increase the pressure on back side of the check👍🏻
Yes that can work too. I have a video with that someplace. It was several years ago.
Scuba divers use cold water wetsuits so maybe it will help with your cold water situation.
That would be a fun video. Standing in the woods with a full Scuba Dive Suit.
Is it any problem if check valve have small leakage?
What if I increased the supply ( 4 inch to 3 1/2 to 3 and so on till I got down to 1 1/2 supply then the delivery line be 1/2 inch) my supply is 6ft my delivery output is 580ft in length with a ride of 44ft. Will this equation work?
What happens when the waste valve is higher upstream from the pressure tube?
Cycling arm and leg warmers. They used to be made from wool
Yes I have seen those. I got out the coat for today. The temp dropped down to 38 F.
When it gets cold here we go bear hunting and skin the bears for fur. It is a hassle having to do this every year but better than freezing ;)
Ha all we have here is squirrel. Might take a lot of them to cover all that needs covering.
Please which ram pump size is suitable for operating a catfish fingerling hatchery?
You would need to have a creek close to your pond that would power the ram pump. This style pump does not work on flat water.
To increase tovolume of water to the delivery pipe make twin ramppump in one delivery pipe
Can you hook a ram pump to a IBC tote?
Videos are fine
Thank you. I am about to improve the audio with an external mic! Should be great.
Awesome !
Hi friend whats up with the papa pump? I am waiting for a new video.
Hello. I will definitely have more on the Papa Pump BUT it is getting cold here. Last night was 28 degrees. We also had our first snow. As much as I want to work with the new pump I also don't want to stick my hands into freezing water haha.
very cool!!
I thinnk for me it is better to put bigger waste vaalve to lessen the stress if higher head.
its already been invented they are called pants and long sleeve shirts to keep you warm its 46 degrees out
Cool video
Thank you.
Not actually reducing the pressure it’s actually bringing more towards neutral pressure by increasing pressure on one side. So let’s just say if you had 50 psi on one side and it needed to be 45 lbs on the other side to make the check function you could feasibly do it at 500 psi or what ever as long as that 5 lb difference is met and the check could handle it.
Yes thats true. That would be an impressive ram pump haha.
@LandtoHouse I probably have about 50 psi according to my calculations I'm hoping extending the valve will help my situation
How mach??
suggestion - 2nd camera would cut down how much running back & forth so much
That is true. I have a new camera. G7X miii. I should have it in operation soon.
Seth, I'm a city dude wanna be a country boy so I little more explanation upfront would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.
I have made so many of these ram pump videos I forget to break it down each video. If you missed this one its a nice slow intro to ram pumps. The Green House install: ruclips.net/video/baD9KH3i6es/видео.html

I have made ramp pump but cycle not started. What I made mistake please help 😭😭😭😭
Sweat pants and a sweater may help.
OR sweat pants and a sweat top! Matching gray or red. Haha
The waste valve height video also ties into this problem

Welders sleeves.
And chaps.
Haha yes. I did end up getting the coat out. Turned out nice and cold today.
Allo est-ce que cela pourrait fonctionner dans un puit de sous-sol pour évité les inondations?
Oh u are alone sorry if i hurt u back in onetime i asked about this in comments
Not a problem. My wife left the home back in July. Things are still unsure at the moment but should settle down soon.
@@LandtoHouse i hope. It going good
Do you and no one else, people just love to put shit on people they see doing something they can only dream about….
Perhaps that is true. I like to let people know what is going on but in the end I only know how to make one type of video.
@@LandtoHouse I have had 2 years of physical and mental hell. I have loved and continue to love watching your videos and content. I look forward to more on the turbine and the new feed manifold.
Water landing on a upside down pie pan is noisy.
So use it to hear the water when you can't see it.
And I guess we can forgive you for not devoting your entire life to us.
DUDE!!! buy a second camera!
ummm.... at 1:40, bad case of gobbledy-gook, there. because, if the supply-side Diameter remains the same, more water AINT gonna want to go through it, due to more head, at any Given Second.!
said another way, it is probable that the supply-side (and valve) diameters self-regulate the flow.
these sorts of mods should be seen to be deliberate Disimprovements to a system.
done in an illogical attempt to solve a nonexistent problem. d
are you divorce????
He explained the situation a few videos ago. May want to check it out. ruclips.net/video/FOyGEE5QgpQ/видео.html
