This will Kill a Ram Pump EVERY TIME

- The inline valve of the ram pump can become clogged or broken and it will prevent the ram pump from cycling. The waste valve will cycle a few times and then stop. In this clear pressure tank you can see the water go up into the tank and then slowly return to the waste valve or go back into the drive pipe. It is important to keep debris out of the inline valve so that it can close correctly. To fix this issue you can back wash the valve and get any debris out. If the valve is old or has had a hard freeze you might have to replace the valve.

You’re every day content inspires me even more!!!
Thanks for sharing this, 3-ish years for the seals in the check-valve to wear out, that's pretty good. Keep up the stress testing, we want to know!
I was hope you would consider mounting it to a scrap pallet to keep it up out of the next storm's muck and debris.
Lifting this up would be a good idea. 45 million cycles is a lot in my opinion. :)
Funny thing Seth. Today I was looking around for a valve like that at ACE here in Grenada West Indies but didn’t find it.
Have a spare I bought from you but don’t find it....
Think I have the same issue with my pump.
Thanks for your videos Seth 👍🏼
I would love to see some on build a ram pump with a clear check valve to see the operation.
1:50 Maybe consider using stainless steel screws as a standard, Drywall screws are interior grade. My opinion is stainless steel hardware would be the standard. But I’m nothing more than a viewer, sitting here watching you gain life experience with ram pumps. I digress
Great that you have your own personal ram pump and can gain experience with it (and show it on RUclips, of course). Do you still have the inline check valve? Would be interesting to cut it open and see how it looks like and what caused the failure.
Very nice sir good job
Thank you.
Nice.I used to service Blake's Hydram pumps in Uk
We still have a Blake’s hydram pump supplying water to multiple properties. Originally put in in 1898. The only parts that aren’t original are the valve rubbers and the waste valve adjuster spindle. Goes to show how good these pumps were made.
Thats awesome! Someday I would like to try out an old pump.
For sure! I would like to get a really old pump to test out.
thank you for sharing
Thank you for watching!
Hi seth.. another quick way to test if that check valve is leaking turn off the drive pipe valve .push open the other check valve and you will get water coming out as it bypasses the second check valve
Can you do an autopsy on the old valve if you still have it, dremel or something open it?
Question: how would a larger diameter and/or taller stand pipe effect the results of a ram pump? Would taller create more pressure and uphill delivery force? Might be a good idea for a video... Cheers
Do you mean pressure tank? Yes a larger pressure tank increases delivery as does more head and a larger system.
A stand pipe is used in the drive pipe to match the source and bring the source closer to the pump. If that means adding more head pressure than yes!
A larger pressure tank just takes longer to build pressure. There is a sweet spot in tank size. Anything larger and it does not matter.
Hello Seth, texted you before about my project. Just bought 2 6" turbines from Spencer to install over my Dam. Been watching you videos about how to do it and what not to do. Would like to recommend you number your videos like video "number 3 on water wheels". Would make it easier to find your next video on that subject.
That is a good idea. Some series do have numbers. Like my 16 part build a shed series and the 10 part hydro series.
we have a river in our backyard so we have hi volume of water with very little head pressure can the volume be necked down to create head pressure
Considering how long these are in water, I am surprised you do not use products that do not deteriorate from the water - screws & straps etc
Have you looked at methods of winterizing the system/pumps???
Seth. Finally installing our 1/2 ram pump. We have 25 feet of drive pipe. Four ft drop and 25 ft of rise. We can lift water but only when it is 20% open on the delivery side. Any ideas? Thanks
So I have another idea on a underwater ram pump a hole that I havent figured out placement yet 4 with a 2 way valve in so that the ram pumps pressure doesnt dissipate or lose pressure on initial flux
Are you in nc what part ? I would love to work in a water system like yours
How about just keep it running during the winter so it won't freeze up ? Like you do for outside water Pickets at a good Drip for a hard freeze
What if you need to use it in winter how would one prevent freezing ?
What will happen if you add another tank to your existing design or add another waste valve? Will it increase the voluume of water on your delivery pipe?
Does the winter time kill the pump if it runs through the winter, I mean enough cold below zero will freeze running water, but if it stays under -20 Celsius?
I was also thinking of using a metallic gas tank as the pressure tank as an option for such a pump, the downside is of course it would probably get corroded on the inside if not proper corrosion resistant steel.
I have a few people that use the pump 24/7 in the winter. They insulated the pump to keep the wind off. An exposed delivery pipe can freeze and that will stop the whole system.
You should probably use a stainless steel check valve
My brother have a fishpond and the source of the water to supply the whole pond is came from a deep ground with approx. 20 feet depth using electric water pump. Would you please share a video of using pump that can get water into a deep hole with 20 feet depth that no need to use an electric pump like what my brother did. Thanks and God bless
Ram pumps need to be downhill from the water source. Their whole function is based on head pressure gained from elevation. It can't suck up water from a hole.
While you have it out you can move the drive pipe ball valve down so when you test you can turn it off the whole way
After cleaning the debris it is away from that block better. Should close and open now.
@@LandtoHouse gotcha I just remember last years vids where you said it was too close to the sluce box (sp?) To turn it off fully
For sure! And I was too lazy to clean it away.
Seth buddy can you use a large garden hose as the drive pipe? Does it have to be a hard pipe for some reason and if so why?
You have to have a pipe that matches the size of the waste valve. And the more flex the less the pressure wave will hammer into the pump. Garden hose does not work well at all.
That makes sense and appreciate the answer, I like your solar additional that going to be a hit, you do great work.
Easiest way to clean that valve out. Install it onto a container of water. Or even just on the end of a garden hose. In the position where it doesn't let any water out. Now poke and poke and poke at the spring end of the valve, to let water out in spurts. Enough of this should dislodge pretty much anything stuck in the valve.
Why do you use the inline valve instead of two swing valves? Is there a benefit?
There are a couple of benefits. They're less expensive, they're lighter, and the big one is they do not have to be Oriented in a specific way to operate. The swing valve needs to have the flap connector upright.
Can you please make a video with sprinkler working with ramp pump
You might find this helpful.

First idea that came to mind is to put one of those little "strainers" that go onto the end of the kitchen taps or inline on washing machines. Could that maybe be a potential solution? (simply thinking out aloud here, don't shoot me).
That can work as long as it passes enough water.
At the source bucket/tank that way it would backflush 45 million times in 3 years also.
Seth, I have an issue. After a few weeks of use the pipe at the delivery end starts to vibrate/ pulse each cycle and efficiency drops. It resolves after I tear everything apart and put back but I never really know what's going on. Any thoughts or advise?
Do you have a bladder, or a snifter valve to replace air into the air chamber? Sounds like it's getting full of water.
I am looking about your product place leave me a message. When I post this , I am looking for more information no this.
How much is 1 G of ram pump how much water would it pump and would feel like totes and everything plus keep the water going with you build a free a box run it from Gideon from freezing that one for a off-grid home
Also instead of using deck screws you might be better off using 318 Stainless Steel screws, as it would be better suited for a wet enviroment
Wet environment? HAHA. 3 years underwater might even rust stainless.
@@LandtoHouse not 318, 318 is marine grade stainless
@@Celcius1 the ss valve that i am using is 318. Or 304 i can't remember. But it has worked well and shows no signs of oxidation.
How about a quiet under water ram pump?
Hi I made the same set up as you but can’t get it to work, the valve shoots water out but doesn’t shut off just poors water out can you help please .I’m intake is coming from water tanks
Possibly not enough head for the weight of the valve.
I'm building a hydroelectric system that uses a ram pump to mechanically pump the water and cycle it through the generator system; have you ever thought of doing that yourself?
have you ever checked out a double acting ram pump?
I've heard the term but never have seen One in operation. Also doesn't seem to be much information about them
Tell what kind of valve you are working with. I am assuming this was a check valve
Yes check valve
If I leave my ram pump outside in the winter it will freeze? How the hell is that going to happen?
It can freeze. I hope to keep mine running all winter for testing. Should be some fun content.
Seth you promised to do a video on the multiple waste valves and it has been almost a year now
Remind me of the configuration on the multi waste valve. I have a video with two valves.
@@LandtoHouse You said you are going to do one with four valves
@@LandtoHouse we even chatted about it on your Instagram
Ah ok I can still do that.
Maybe could have cut open the check valve so we could see the bad seals
True. I did that in a later video.
💡👍
How Many ram pumps do you fix a day
Not so much fix. I do have them for sale on my website. Otherwise I just test out ideas for videos.
Use brass screws can’t complain to much 3 years of problem free service
When u do the new hydro engine video?
I brought it back to the workbench this week. I am building the new housing. (I only work youtube 1 day a week)
@@LandtoHouse oh wow i thought u do something ewryday do u have a second job then?
@@henrikostrov482 I work 3rd at a home for adults with disabilities.
And I sell ram pump.
When my kids are older I will do more youtube. Hard to work in snake land with a 2 year old.
@@LandtoHouse oh ok so Good luck
IT WOULD BE NICE TO CUT THAT BAD VALVE OPEN, TO SEE IF IT HAD SOMETHING STUCK IN IT OR DID IT JUST WEAR OUT.
It seems to have had the rubber gasket wear out. Or it tore in the cold.
Need ramp pump for sale

Cut the broken valve open with a hacksaw
