  • Thanks to Travis S from Ford-Trucks.com forums who told me exactly where the relay bank is.
This is a 1997 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer 4x4 5.4L.
@ 0:20 I said that everything I read said it was at the right side of the dash, but I meant right side of the Instrument Cluster. It is actually at the right side of the dash.
@ 5:24 That is a notification coming through my phone..If you haven't seen Big Hero 6 you should, that's what the sound is from.

I replaced those three relays and had no positive reaults. I can hear them clicking whenever I press the power switch on both doors, I don’t know what the issue is

I don't have the Expedition anymore and don't know how it's wired off the top of my head, but I do remember that my issue was the power wire for the locks somewhere between the fuse box under the hood and the 3 relays had a break in it. That could be your issue because the relays could be switched using a different circuit than the one that actually powers the actuators. I don't remember if the relays clicked or not, but I ran a new wire from the fuse box to the relay box instead of trying to find the break.

So I've took my dash out completely and found two or 3 of these small black boxes with fuses and or relays in them like the one your working on was wondering if any of you knew the purpose of them are they all linked to the door power lock stuff? Does the power windows have one to? 2002 f 150 4.2 chopping out stuff for big audio build

Which one of the 4 relays are for the window Or do you change all of them

Sorry, I have to figure out how to get notifications when I have a new comment. My problem was the main power wire from the fuse box under the hood to the relay block had a break, I ran a new wire rather than try to follow it. Since its been 6 months I'm guessing you figured it out by now, but if it were me I would switch identical relays until my problem went away, then I'd know which relay is bad. You can also google how to test a relay, if you have a volt meter and a couple pieces of wire its pretty easy.

Thanks for the informative video. My 1998 Ford Expedition 4.6L XLT is doing the exact same thing. My locks work when arming and disarming The system, but will not work when hitting the button on the interior controller. Can you tell me the exact gauge/type of wire you used to correct this condition? Also, did you leave the old wires connected or not?

Kneel before Zod - I'm sorry, I don't think I got a notification for your comment, if I did then I forgot to answer when I had time. I'm assuming you've taken care of it by now, but I'll answer in case somebody else needs to know.
I just used wire that I had, I think it was 12ga, which if I recall correctly was bigger than what it replaced. I think I cut both ends of the wire and spliced in the new. I know I left the old wire in because I wasn't going to cut into the wire loom just to get that wire out.

Dustin Tunis. Thanks for the reply. I’m just now revisiting this thread. Now that I’m between jobs I’ll go ahead and tackle this problem.

Ironically my 99 Expedition Edie Bauer did this very thing nearly the same day as your reply here. It is just now warming up from winter here in Michigan so I'm tackling the issue now. Gosh darn 7mm bullcrap lol. I did get that cover off the lover relay box but can't seem to get the last 2 bolts for the box base.

    So did it fix it

In my case the power wire had a break in it somewhere and I wasn't going to try to trace it, so i ran a new wire from the proper fuse in the fuse box in the engine bay to the relay block that my video shows.

0:22 to the right side of the dash?? That side is left probably that's why you didn't find those relays

IIRC I kept finding that it was under the dash to the right of the steering column, I wasn't going to remake the video after I had it back together.
