For such a finicky plant, I found it one of the easiest to propagate! Took two cuttings, both rooted in two weeks and now I have a healthy baby diva 😂 Thanks for the great tips.
Ive had 3 leaves sitting in water for what seems like forever but didn't give up since the leaves remained healthy and the stems have finally produced roots. If the leaf isn't dead, then don't give up.
One of my very first propagations I think took me maybe 4+ months and I almost gave up on it and then one day it had roots, now it’s a huge plant and I have had multiple clipping off of it and have gifted maybe other plants to others, I love doing this and Claire, she’s the best to watch for tips and tricks, I refer this page to anyone I know who has these plants!!! Ty again for all your help!!!
Please do not lose hope. I had two pieces of fiddle leaf cut and inserted into a glass jar with water. One started rooting after three months and the second one started rooting after seven months. Currently both of them grow very well.
You're welcome! Yes, you can propagate any cuttings / offshoots so long as you have a node. As long as the cutting has a node, the roots that grow will turn the cutting into a new plant. Happy growing!
Great question! It doesn't make too much difference to the growth of the roots however, in water you can see the progress of the roots. In soil, you can't see the progression of the roots growing and if you lifted the cutting out of the soil, it could potentially damage the new roots that have formed. Happy Growing!
She did not talk about nodes at all which surprised me and was referring to your cuttings as a leaf? Are you supposed to just cut a leaf or cut through the stem I don't get it I'm confused now. There were pictures in her video of just a leaf with roots on it but I was always told that you cannot grow a fiddly fig from a single leaf. So what's up with no mention of nodes for roots?
Definitely need nodes to grow roots for a new plant. For propagation, you would need to have a cutting from the plant that includes a node. For notching (which encourages branching on a plant) you do a 'notch' area between nodes to encourage more branches to grow. How often should you change the water when propagating? I'm using the rooting hormone but one of my leaves looks like it's withering- thank you for the help!
I need to trim about 12 inches off the top of my fiddle leaf to allow it to fit in my space. There's about 9 leaves on that section. Can I divide one cutting into three separate 3-leaf sections and propagate each?
Absolutely! You can definitely take the long cutting and make 3 cuttings out of it. As long as each one has a node, they can be propagated into new plants. Happy Growing!
Hi, I have successfully propagated my mother fiddle leaf fig with just water. I live in Florida and my plants are within a screened lanai and love it! But with that said I had 4 cuttings that just seemed to rot in the water even though I changed it every 3-4 days because it would become cloudy. Only 1 rooting was successful and I wondered if the combination of light and heat was the problem. I am going to use a rooting hormone in the future but am puzzled about the cloudiness of the water. Any suggestions, and thank you!
Great question, it could be the composition of the water itself, but you should be ok to change the water as you begin to see it get cloudy and just replace the water to keep it clear of bacteria.
@@FiddleLeafFigPlant Thanks so much Claire, I think because I had it sitting outside in the heat was the issue. I will try rooting it inside where it is not so hot and our of direct sunlight. Too much of a good thing!
I bought your root supplement to get rid of root rot on the main plant, will it work for a stem cutting in stead of the hormone? I just have the cutting in water and I'm seeing many roots after 3 weeks!
Good question! We have a propagation promoter and rooting hormone that is a different formula than our root supplement. I recommend using that on any propagated cuttings.
Hi Claire, I accidentally amputated one of my fiddle leaf tree branches when I got too notching happy. I had so much success from trying it before that I couldn't help myself from attempting it again. I'm still devastated because it was the most successful branch after rehabilitating it from a year of neglect and mostly just pure ignorance. Let's just say I'm learning a lot lol...mostly thanks to all your videos. It's funny that I purchased this 6ft tree because it was instagram trendy. Not knowing the work and care it actually takes to keep it alive and striving. But now I understand the joy and purpose of being a plant owner and seeing a new bud blossom. I'm sorry, for the long intro to a very simple question. I'm trying to propagate the lone solider branch, and I purchased the your liquid hormone promoter. I know it says a teaspoon to two cups, but is it normal that my propagation water is a dark brown? And secondly I know you said that when propagating a cutting that it shouldn't have more than 3 leaves max but I have 7 leaves. The leaves are so full and beautiful that I didn't want to pinch them off. Should I pull off the leaves even though my big guy have have developed quite a few popcorn spots after 2 weeks from water propagation? I just Wana see him succeed :( never thought I get so attached to a plant lol. Thanks again!
Hello! Yes, our propagation promoter is a dark brown color, it is the sea kelp ingredient. I would leave the propagation as is as it seems to be working! Good luck!
I have a fiddle leaf that is about 4 ft tall and only has about 6 leaves at the very top. Unfortunately after we bought it from Costco and repotted it all The lower leaves fell off. I have read that it will never grow leaves at the bottom again. However today I saw a baby leaf at the very bottom. Is there a chance? I was thinking of cutting the top off and just starting over by propagating it? Not sure what to do? Any advice welcome.
Great question! That is correct that new leaves mostly grow from the top but if the plant is under stress, the energy can only go so far as leaves near the bottom of the plant. I recommend making sure your plant is sitting directly in front of and up against your brightest window and ensure the water you give is draining thoroughly and properly out the bottom drainage holes. In time when the plant is healthy, you can try notching to create growth lower down. And pruning the top will encourage branching to occur at the point where you make the cut. Happy Growing!
It's ok to propagate in water with the hormone powder, The other option is to root in soil. This method is fine, but you just can't see the root growth progression. Happy Growing!
Hi Claire! When the water becomes murky and you get fresh water, do you then dip the cutting in MORE powder rooting hormone or do you dip it ONCE, the first time after cutting, and even after getting fresh water, never dip it in powder rooting hormone again? Thank you!
Yes, you can do a big trim. I recommend cutting it at the point where you no longer want it to get taller and where you would like branches to grow. When you prune, the main stem will no longer get taller, but the branches that form, will. Happy Growing!
What about if I have a healthy plant that seems to be growing new leaves every few days to a week, getting taller since I put it in a larger pot, but the bottom leaves are dying close to the pot At bottom, and some are getting hard and dry but still green. Is it possible to make a plant grow branches out the sides? Lol. And how?
Hi Juan, if your plant looks a little sparse, you will want to give your plant more light. They need a lot of light to grow new leaves and branches. Another technique you can try is notching! That will help to grow branches in the bare spots of your plant. Here is a helpful video tutorial to check out! ruclips.net/video/-z2c4UtxASI/видео.html
A few drops is fine. If you use the full dilution (1tsp to the 2 cups of water) the water can be a little too dark if you want to see roots form. But that is the correct ratio to use.
My first propagation is successful I was worried at first but it putting out a lot lot from one cut and even single stem grew roots will they grow a stem

Yes, you can replenish any rooting hormone you use when you refresh the water.
