The think was that the 90s was all about the "gathering of the tribes", it was a time where artists where encouraged to pull from various influences to create something that was fresh and new because the public was eclectic and wanted, more than anything, something that was new and decidedly "not 80s"... That said, as @jordanbenson2980 pointed out, The Chems came out of the gates with the most phenomenal album and then just slowly got less interesting (up until Push the Button, at which point they came back, full force, IMO).
YES!!!!! My husband and I played this CD to death when it came out; the other HOT song was “Smack My Bitch Up”. Yep, blasting with our 5 year old in the car. He’s 31 now and doin just fine 😂❤. You two should watch the official video for Firestarter; it’s great!
This is one of the songs that helped keep my weight down back in my club days. Damn, you come off the floor after a set of songs from bands like Prodigy and you're just a nasty, glob of sweat. Best workout you can get.
The Prodigy is a techno/ rave project by composer/ producer Liam Howlett in the 90's ... Howlett used two frontmen to handle vocals up front - Keith Flint (the white punk rocker) and Maxim (the black guy in dreads)... Maxim did the vocals on another Prodigy single - 'Breathe' w/ Keith Flint. 'Firestarter' was Keith Flint on vocals... Sadly, he took his own life in 2019.
As hip hop fans I would highly recommend that you check out Diesel Power from The Fat Of The Land album, also by The Prodigy. Edit; I would like to add Poison too. Music For The Jilted Generation is one of my favourite albums (of any genre) of all time and Poison is track that would fit in here, over any of the others. Their Law/VoodooPeople is also a good shout though. Break & Enter is my favourite though close second/tie for first being Poison.
The Prodigy, to me, is all about their first two albums The Experience and Music For The Jilted Generation. Top song picks: Out of Space, Fire, Their Law, Poison
Liam Howlett, the DJ, is the prodigy behind The Prodigy. Find the Dirtchamber Sessions. It's 6 tracks from the DJ based off a set he did for the BBC. He drops everything musically in the album, and you never realized how closely all the sounds are related until he puts them all together..
Seen these guys live a few times. They were incredible. One of a kind techno mosh pits everywhere. This song was on the Playstation one game Wipeout's soundtrack. It blew them the f*ck up.
Fat of the land is an absolute belter of an album... Also music for the jilted is probably one of the most influential early 'EDM' albums... Must listen, all of it.
@@agnieszkan.988 I of course recognise experience being legendary in terms of pioneering electronic music and experimentation, but personally I didn't enjoy it musically, but hey that's just my opinion and taste. Jilted on the other hand was mind bendingly awesome to me.

I used to be very focused on rock/metal but this game sold me on electronic music, and 25 years later, I can see how much of an impact it had on my musical tastes :) You may want to check out The day is my enemy, Spitfire, Nasty or Breathe!

The thing about a track like this is it's of a time. As time moves on music moves on so what is groundbreaking at the time becomes overtaken by next level. I remember the first thrash metal track i heard, Battery, by Metallica being super groundbreaking for me for power and speed and just being something completely new. This track is off the Prodigy 3rd album and really was different from all other dance / indie / techno of the time, and had vibe where it was across genre appeal. Techno heads liked it, a lot of rockers, indie and punk types liked it, same with the rest of the singles from this album, i'd say Breathe took it to another level and killer video.
You guys need to understand the backdrop to when this came about. Firstly this became Xmas number 1 in the UK, the video is awesome. This was a time when the UK was the hot bed of the world for music development, with electronica re-inventing and electing genre. The prodigy brought together the breakbeat of the the early 90’s with punk and heavy riffs, so many metal and thrash heads got into electronic music, industrial was at its peak, Trip hop via Portished and Massive Attack, Drum and Bass, with Grooverider and Goldie, Adam F, and all the variations of house.. then electronica with the likes of Orbital, FSOL and Aphex Twin, not to mention. Banco de Gaia, System 7.. psachdelic with Ozric Tentacle’s… gosh us UK children of the 90’s were so spoiled for class music . For those that were there , if you know you know.
So much more these guys to explore. Other top acts like Leftfield, Finitribe, The Grid, Joey Beltram, Guy called Gerald, Fluke, Underworld, Jonny L, Richie Hawtin, William Orbit - might be easier to list record labels XL, FFRR, R&S etc. and then switch it up into IDM like Aphex Twin, u-ziq, Plaid, Boards of Canada - all thanks to pioneers from Detroit and Chicago
I worked in a bar in the 90s when this came out. Big pool hall with a small attached room for live bands with is own little bar and tiny dance floor. Disco ball and all. We were cleaning up one night and the bartender with me was 7 months pregnant, shaved head, piercings, tattoo, wearing a khaki overall shorts thing with combat boots. This song came on the TV in that room and she went to tearing it up on that dance floor under the strobe lights. Most bad ass thing I have ever personally witnessed. This song will always be gold to me.
Interesting fact for you: Liam actually wrote the song without any vocals (it was supposed to be an instrumental track). Keith was just having fun singing over the top and Liam decided to keep it. Great decision! RIP Keith
Curious how you guys will react to this one. Probably not the best, but LOVE The Fat of The Land album- such a banger! Next should be Breathe, Smack My Bitch Up, Diesel Power, Funky Shit, etc. P.s. I'm not normally an electronic music guy, but there are a few album I gravitated towards a few in the 90s.
Great reaction guys! Thanks for being open minded. The Prodigy was music perfectly designed for the club. In that environment, you didn't notice nor feel the passage of 5+ minutes (no matter what your 'poison' of choice) - you were groovin' (hopefully with a fine lady or gent) and wanting that to last forever! The only other place where I've had their tracks going was while driving. Again, where you don't really notice the passage of time. Sitting in your easy chair at home - The Prodigy is NOT for that! Highly recommend: Breathe (a little less repetitive, but just as awesome), and if you would indulge, Smack My B!tch Up is stellar!! Cheers.
Prodigy certainly is best in the club, but contrary to most dance music I think they also have albums that do very well sitting in my chair while gaming or whatever doing choirs in house. It's good listening music imo! Maybe this song wasn't the best fit for that.
First off rest easy to Keith Flint!!!!!!!! Second the album this come from is hella dope. I'll never forget when MTV banned the video smack by bitch up from them. Saw it once lol and that was it. Keith's energy was a whole different vibe if you were ever lucky enough to have seen them live!!!!!! It's hard to listen to this and NOT get pumped 🤘🏻🤘🏻
I don't know if Ye was influenced directly by these guys, but yeah Yeezus for sure had a lot of (abrasive) electronic sounds that you'll also find throughout The Prodigy's music. Also yeah, that type of drum pattern is pretty common in that typical 90s music, specifically the breakbeat genre and like drum and bass/jungle. The drum pattern is called the "amen break" (even though in this song it wasn't exactly that) and it's been the foundation of manyyyyy hiphop joints too
Hearing the initial sound I am immediately warped back to the 90ies when mr. DJ dropped this bombshell without any warning and everybody was completely freaking out ... whereas on the long run Narayan and Diesel Power turned out to be my favourites
Great choice from Dean!💖 I love Prodigy! I was watching via Patreon but I missed the beginning of your show so I hopped over here. I like your reaction to this. Yes.... very rave like.😜
I LOVE the little head-bobs once the beat kicks in. I think they're pretty much universal among all humanity; when the beat's good, your head can't help but bob.
I think for you boys, The Poison is next. Nasty groove off what i believe is the most important electonic record of all time, Music for thr Jilted Generation.
Breathe is the song you want to listen to from them. It’s the song that blew my mind when I heard it. Minefields was the song off the Matrix Soundtrack.
God i have lots of memories of this song as festivals. This song is always used as the Lighting of the Fuse on the Powder Keg. This song is always how you got the party started!
Im from Portugal and i remenber an UK band, The Clash. People outside of UK never getting the madness of british people with The Clash, people "ok its nice, but is the thing with The Clash?"
The first time I heard this song back then they played live for MTV’s Fashionably Loud live televised modeling show. I immediately fell in love with it! 😍 I did like going to raves back then, but I was chilling watching tv the first time I saw it. I saw them play live at Ultra Music Fest in Miami and they were amazing live! They were some of the original techno coming out of the UK in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Their breakout hit was “Charlie”, also a good song but you can tell they refined their style more by Firestarter and the entire album The Fat of the Land.
Yes, The Prodigy were heavily influenced by Hip-Hop. Smack my bitch up", was sampled from the song "Give the Drummer Some" by the Ultramagnetic MCs. Diesel Power from the same arriving had a guest vocal from Kool Keith. They also used a lot of samples from dub Reggae, notably Max Romeo on Outer Space. A lot of 90s Brit dance was heavily influenced by hardcore Hip-Hop. Yes, Ye used a lot of UK dance music in Yeezus. He did a whole track that was just him rapping over an Aphex Twin tune.
Saw these guys at Endfest '96. I think they closed out the night. They were SO much fun!! Massive dance party - everyone was encouraged to do their own thing and nobody cared about how silly they may have looked. Just dance and enjoy the music. It was a very freeing moment in my life. 🤘🏼
Prodigy was the only electronic music act that got consistently invited to rock/metal festivals. That's how hard they went live.
I saw them alongside metallica, iron maiden, slayer, dream theater and a good deal more at sonishpere in the UK. Absolutely legendary 🙌

Interesting fact for you: Liam actually wrote the song without any vocals (it was supposed to be an instrumental track). Keith was just having fun singing over the top and Liam decided to keep it. Great decision! RIP Keith
This song rocks I always got on the dance floor for this song. I could listen to this song for hours.
Diesel Power would be a good one for them to check out i think yea
Diesel Power from the same album featuring Kool Keith 💪 I think you'll like that one more
First off rest easy to Keith Flint!!!!!!!!
Yes.... very rave like.😜
RIP Keith Flint
You're dead on with the old school hip hop stuff. They've got a collab with Kool Keith that sounds like the late 80's at 2x speed
I LOVE the little head-bobs once the beat kicks in. I think they're pretty much universal among all humanity; when the beat's good, your head can't help but bob.
Yeah!!! Minerva from Deftones pls
I think for you boys, The Poison is next. Nasty groove off what i believe is the most important electonic record of all time, Music for thr Jilted Generation.
Definitely a song that's hard to just sit down and listen to. It's more about the mood and the energy it gives off.
Breathe is the song you want to listen to from them. It’s the song that blew my mind when I heard it. Minefields was the song off the Matrix Soundtrack.
Reacting to The Prodigy without watching the video is a crime.
I really like it when you connect artists and styles like you did with Cry, D-Nice, and Rakim. I love seeing those threads across genres and time.
One of my favorites 😍
If you're running or working out and just need to get hyped up, this is the shit. Def hard to be sitting and listening to this, haha.
I don't know man, that's exactly how me and my friends used to listen to this shit. Melted into a couch high as hell staring at the speakers.
@@Hardcastle83 haha I feel it
This is one of those songs that the music video was perfect for
God i have lots of memories of this song as festivals.
This song is always used as the Lighting of the Fuse on the Powder Keg. This song is always how you got the party started!
One of the most legendary bands over here in the uk . Funny to see people in the US dont know them
Im from Portugal and i remenber an UK band, The Clash.
I think album "Invaders must die" from 2008 is their best work, every track on this is from good to great!
Their concerts where the bomb. You had Punks and Metalheads in the front forming moshpits and Technoheads and HipHopper in the back dancing.
Finally some classic EDM. You made my day.
Not EDM.
I grew up in Latvia and this song was at every party, club when it came out. Immensely popular.
You have to go listen to Spitfire off their later album Always Outnumbered Never Outgunned. Absolute banger
Been a huge Prodigy fan for more than 30 years.
If you want a trip, there’s nothing like their early hit Out Of Space
Yes, I didn't get it initially (close-minded metalhead!), but love it now!
Would not blame anyone for not getting it. It’s pure crazy, and that’s why it’s great
Voodoo people! Man, I loved Prodigy. This song was on the video game Wipeout XL. I loved it so much that I bought the albums.
Would love to see you guys react to "Poison" or "No Good" by The Prodigy. Awesome tracks.
I’m going to watch this later. But I’m going to go ahead and hit that like button.
Sepultura did a bitchin' cover of this song.
Speaking as an Essex boy, may I say how funny it is to finally hear my accent on your channel! 🙂 (Rest in power, Keith - you lovely mad old bugger!)
this might not have been the best prodigy song to start out with but it grows on ya
Seen them live very early 90s before they got massive. Still astounding.
RIP kieth flint
🤣 if it was not from my raver days, I don't know if I'd like it as much as I do but I do still love this song
when you're out in the field raving at 2 in the morning, this is exactly the heat you want
You've been living under rock guys, how in the world You didn't know all the songs You react in this channel? 😂😂
This song is part of the soundtrack for trainspotting
Born Slippy is the iconic track from that though
Saw these guys at Endfest '96. I think they closed out the night. They were SO much fun!! Massive dance party - everyone was encouraged to do their own thing and nobody cared about how silly they may have looked. Just dance and enjoy the music. It was a very freeing moment in my life. 🤘🏼
i would recommend Omen. its just over 3 minutes
This is such a tune, loved that you guys hadn't heard it before and seeing you slowly vibe with the madness haha
