Rob and Amber were amazing. Rather than say what they thing Jenna should've done or what they would do they were completely sympathetic. Rob rightly said that it's not their decision and that Jenna needs to dod what was right for her and they should support it. Amber just ran over and gave her a big hug

And from my own personal experience, cancer/sicknesses with a loved one can escalate SO fast. For all we know her mom really started to go downhill that week (or maybe she even had bouts of being up and down in the past and Jenna didn’t realize this one would be the end). She also probably didn’t want to let the tribe down ESPECIALLY if she would have had to back out at the very last minute. I think what’s important is she went home and had that time with her mother. This happened a long time again and I’m sure she lives with regret over missing those days. I think everyone needs to let it go and stop talking about how they would have done things differently. Obviously she would have too.

I never remembered Rob's response, but watching back, it makes me like him a lot more. He was kinda a punk (in an enjoyable way) in his first two seasons, so for him to be speaking from his heart is really sweet.

Amazon was my very first season, and all I remember was watched her and Heidi dominate the men in the post-merge. Jenna was amazing, one of the first queens of Survivor. I was so excited for her to come back. This broke my heart but I was happy she made the right decision, I think her mom died 4-5 days after she got home.

I don't see how this is different from Terry's son emergency evacuation in Cambodia. That is considered an evacuation, this a quit. I really hope Survivor statistics amend this to an emergency evacuation too. Also considering the sad outcome, I'm quite sure that Jenna was kept up to date with the situation back home.
The difference is it was production's decision to withdraw Terry. That's why it's considered an evacuation. Jenna leaving the game was entirely on her.
They are completely different. The first, Terry was told that his son had a problem while he was ALREADY IN Cambodia. Jenna left her dying mother to go play a game and then she changed her mind. Someone else deserved a spot in All Stars more and she robbed them.
All i wanted to do was hug her too. I’ve lost family who I didn’t get to be by their bedside to say goodbye one last time. I can’t imagine anyone going through that. I know its a game but i could never be able to stomach that news from anyone and expect them to stay and go home to bad news like that. No one deserves not to say goodbye. Well I’m true to my word” but that’s all i really got for her. She was just too one sided and her and Jenna were really rude to shi ann when shi Ann was like “hey amber will win come talk to me” so both women had it coming tbh. I think everyone got their karma this season though.
When this first aired I didn't think much of it, I was 11, but everyone but Amber and Rob are so tactless and dismissive and it pains me to watch this. I'm really glad Jenna stuck to her guns and didn't cave into peer pressure. Everyone is weighing in on the situation when it has nothing to do with them and if they were in the same predicament, they'd feel exactly the same--or so I'd hope, if they would get their massive egos out of the way.

Difference is that Big Tom would have never started the game in the first place if he knew his son or wife were having problems. Jenna knew her mom was having problems before she even started.
I agree that the producers let her know. Jenna's family would have contacted the producers to let them know that her mum only had days left - that kind of news goes beyond the game and would make the producers monsters if they didn't tell her. They just would have told Jenna to use this line to make to keep up the illusion that the outside world and family can't have any contact - even in emergency situations.
Jeff Probst has always said ever since the show began that Survivor at its core is a social experiment. No greater example than this, especially watching this same clip years later. Look at how blunt everyone is when asked what they would do or what Jenna should do or shouldn't have done. Even Jeff was less compassionate back then, strictly looking at it from a game perspective at a time that quitting the game was unfathomable. I'd like to think if this same situation happened in today's game, there wouldn't be such debate on camera about if she should quit or what it means for the game moving forward with any judgement attached.

I think Rupert was maybe misunderstood, he knew she had a tough choice but he just wanted to remind her of the consequence she had to live with as quitting. I don't think he sent any malice her way. I don't think Big Tom did either really, he could have been more selective with his words but I assume production was fishing for reactions. He recognized that people make decisions based on their own values.
When Jenna leaves, all the happiness from the first 3 episodes leaves too. This is where the season gets dark and it only gets worse from here 😪

I don't think Big Tom did either really, he could have been more selective with his words but I assume production was fishing for reactions. He recognized that people make decisions based on their own values.
