Humphrey DeForest Bogart (/ˈboʊɡɑːrt/; December 25, 1899 - January 14, 1957), nicknamed Bogie, was an American film and stage actor. His performances in Classical Hollywood cinema films made him an American cultural icon. In 1999, the American Film Institute selected Bogart as the greatest male star of classic American cinema.
Bogart began acting in Broadway shows, beginning his career in motion pictures with Up the River (1930) for Fox and appeared in supporting roles for the next decade, regularly portraying gangsters. He was praised for his work as Duke Mantee in The Petrified Forest (1936), but remained cast secondary to other actors at Warner Bros. who received leading roles. Bogart also received positive reviews for his performance as gangster Hugh "Baby Face" Martin, in Dead End (1937), directed by William Wyler.
His breakthrough from supporting roles to stardom was set in motion with High Sierra (1941) and catapulted in The Maltese Falcon (1941), considered one of the first great noir films. Bogart's private detectives, Sam Spade (in The Maltese Falcon) and Philip Marlowe (in 1946's The Big Sleep), became the models for detectives in other noir films. His most significant romantic lead role was with Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca (1942), which earned him his first nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor. Forty-four-year-old Bogart and 19-year-old Lauren Bacall fell in love during filming of To Have and Have Not (1944). In 1945, a few months after principal photography for The Big Sleep, their second film together, he divorced his third wife and married Bacall. After their marriage, they played each other's love interest in the mystery thrillers Dark Passage (1947) and Key Largo (1948).
Bogart's performances in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) and In a Lonely Place (1950) are now considered among his best, although they were not recognized as such when the films were released. He reprised those unsettled, unstable characters as a World War II naval-vessel commander in The Caine Mutiny (1954), which was a critical and commercial hit and earned him another Best Actor nomination. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of a cantankerous river steam launch skipper opposite Katharine Hepburn's missionary in the World War I African adventure The African Queen (1951). Other significant roles in his later years included The Barefoot Contessa (1954) with Ava Gardner and his on-screen competition with William Holden for Audrey Hepburn in Sabrina (1954).
A heavy smoker and drinker, Bogart had developed esophageal cancer. He did not talk about his health and visited a doctor in January 1956 after considerable persuasion from Bacall. The disease worsened and several weeks later, on March 1, Bogart had surgery to remove his esophagus, two lymph nodes and a rib. The surgery was unsuccessful, and chemotherapy followed. He had additional surgery in November 1956, when the cancer had metastasized. Although he became too weak to walk up and down stairs, he joked despite the pain: "Put me in the dumbwaiter and I'll ride down to the first floor in style." It was then altered to accommodate his wheelchair.
Bogart lapsed into a coma and died the following day, 20 days after his 57th birthday; at the time of his death he weighed only 80 pounds (36 kg). A simple funeral was held at All Saints Episcopal Church, with music by Bogart's favorite composers: Johann Sebastian Bach and Claude Debussy. In attendance were some of Hollywood's biggest stars, including Hepburn, Tracy, Judy Garland, David Niven, Ronald Reagan, James Mason, Bette Davis, Danny Kaye, Joan Fontaine, Marlene Dietrich, James Cagney, Errol Flynn, Edward G. Robinson, Gregory Peck, Gary Cooper, Billy Wilder, and studio head Jack L. Warner.
Bogart was cremated, and his ashes were interred in Forest Lawn Memorial Park's Columbarium of Eternal Light in its Garden of Memory in Glendale, California. He was buried with a small, gold whistle that had been part of a charm bracelet he had given to Bacall before they married. On it was inscribed, "If you want anything, just whistle." This alluded to a scene in To Have and Have Not when Bacall's character says to Bogart shortly after their first meeting, "You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow."

@@janadeubner9883 My impression was yes. The nature of the evening was to form a line which angled around the corners of the store, (Mirvish books was in an old house, so not massive) so that you can simply watch Lauren as she signs books and says hello to each person. On entry they took down everyones name, presumably at her request so that she could greet each person with their name which i though was friendly. I was there probably an hour and got to say hi, and even had a glance back on leaving which she acknowledged. I know she was a big art lover. Big fan of Henry Moores work, and i was surprised to learn not so long back that she lived at the Dakota Building NYC in a large suite facing the park, since the 1950s. So one of the longest residents there. - On a tangent. My old neighbour in London UK told me in 1999 that she met Ingrid Bergman in Battersea park back in the 70s and signed a matchbox for her. Turns out that Ingrid did indeed live opposite the park across the river at that time. and would often walk around, and all over London.

The Caine Mutiny. In the 1950s, in contrast to his 1940s detective movies. It shows what a range he could portray in acting. Of course, the script writing was very good, with great performances by the supporting cast members.

    • @radicalross7700

I believe Bogart in 1950s was trying to get away from his 1940s movie persona: world-weary cynical anti-hero who doesn't want to stick his neck out but winds up doing it anyway in the end despite himself.(Casablanca, Key Largo, etc.)
Thus we get Charlie Allnut of the African Queen, Lt. Cmdr. Queeg of the Cane Mutiny, and Linus Larrabee of Sabrina, all departures from Bogart's cynical hero persona he perfected in the 1940s.

Brilliant Scott. You cover well known faces which I never seen others do before. I even made a list of all the places I wanna visit when I'm in LA because you even showed us amazing places which I didn't even know existed in these death places and only yesterday I was watching some of your old videos too. I saved some on my favourite list.

Suprised how small Bogart's grave was considering Bacall was loaded (26.6 mil). Her apt in the Dakota was PLUSH ! His death was a long lingering one where he used to be lowered by a dumb waiter down to see his org rat pack buddies. The original members included Errol Flynn, Nat King Cole, Mickey Rooney, Jerry Lewis and Cesar Romero. Also thanks for showing Pickford's grave. She is forgotten in Hollywood now but was a major player in her day. She was the first to hold out for a major contract then co-founded United Artists with Fairbanks, Chaplin,, and Griffith. Sadly, she died an alcoholic and a recluse. Her adopted children called her "too self-absorbed". Thanks for the great vlog. keep up the good work.....

Some of the original Rat Pack members were Judy Garland, Errol Flinn, Nat King Cole and Mickey Rooney. One of my all time favourite actors. Does Craig happen to know if Lauren Bacall’s ashes are at Forest Lawn? There was a rumour that her ashes were going to be with Bogarts. Another fantastic Vlog Scott!!

I looked her up on find a grave Diane and she had the same plot location as Bogie's plot location. I have been looking for that for the last three years! Yes those are some of the original rat pack! I could only remember Judy Garland (she was a neighbor at one time) and i think David Niven was one also.

Thank you so much for sharing this respectful visit to the private resting place of Mr. Bogart. Do you know if there are any live tours where the private areas may be visited? Is Craig an employee of the cemetery or does he have family in the private garden of memories? I have been a Bogart fan my entire life and own every one of his movies and documentaries. I will be in LA later this week and was planning on visiting this cemetery even though I will not be able to get as close to his resting place as you were able. Just being in the cemetery will be a very special experience. I plan on visiting the museum, great mausoleum and the Freedom mausoleum. Thank you!
