George Edward Maxwell Wright , Max Wright, (August 2, 1943 - June 26, 2019) was an American actor, known for his role as Willie Tanner on the sitcom ALF (1986-1990).
Wright was born August 2, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan. He moved to the suburb of Southfield as a child, graduating from Southfield Senior High School in 1961. While a student at Southfield, he was very active in the theatre program and had leads in two different musical productions.
Wright made supporting appearances on television shows such as WKRP in Cincinnati, and was a regular cast member on Misfits of Science, AfterMASH, Buffalo Bill, and The Norm Show, and the made-for-TV adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand. He appeared in the first and second seasons of the sitcom Friends as Terry, the manager of Central Perk. He played Günter Wendt in the 1998 HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon and Dr. Josef Mengele in Playing for Time.
From 1986 to 1990, Wright appeared in the sitcom ALF as Willie Tanner, a typical father of a middle-class family, who finds an alien who has crash-landed on Earth. Despite becoming his best-known performance, the actor despised the role due to its huge technical demands and the fact that he, a human, played a supporting character for an "inanimate object". "It was hard work and very grim", he stated in a 2000 interview to People. He was also, reportedly, very happy when the show was canceled in 1990. "I was hugely eager to have it over with", he said in the same interview. According to his co-star in the show, Anne Schedeen, "there was one take, and Max walked off the set, went to his dressing room, got his bags, went to his car, and disappeared. Nobody had to say, 'Wrap,' and there were no goodbyes". However, Wright later admitted that as the years passed he looked back at ALF with less animosity and conceded that "It doesn't matter what I felt or what the days were like, ALF brought people a lot of joy."
Wright was married to Linda Ybarrondo from 1965 until her death from breast cancer in 2017. The couple had two children.
In 1995, he was diagnosed with lymphoma, which was successfully treated and remained in remission until 2019. He died from the disease on June 26, 2019, at the age of 75 at the Lillian Booth Actors Home in Englewood, New Jersey.
Max Wright is buried in Linden, Michigan at Fairview Cemetery.

I loved Alf as an 80's kid. I appreciate hearing the "Real Stuff" from his life because we are all humans and none of us are perfect and we make mistakes throughout life and it makes us who we are, death doesn't change anything. You handled it respectfully and it made him seem more human and real in my eyes.

My daughter loved Alf, she was born in 1986, and she watched the show as a little girl, I even bought her a stuffed animal Alf. Who knows, maybe the cancer that he had did something to him, to where he wasn't thinking right (drugs) or didn't care anymore. I noticed his mother died the same year as him. RIP Max Wright.

Artie Lang definitely got into trouble himself, but its so nice to hear when someone turns themselves around and lives a safer, more healthy life. All the actors on A.L.F. found it frustrating just because of the difficulty of shooting around a puppet. I had an A.L.F. lunchbox in second grade. 🤣

Sadly; it's not uncommon for men in Hollywood who may be gay to have a wife and kids. Going all the way back to the big Studio days; actors were told explicitly to get married or else be fired and blacklisted. This is still going on today but as society is more accepting of all lifestyles it's dissipating.

    • @alexismaddock3516
      @alexismaddock3516 Год назад +7

This is very true but it wasn't just done to men, women were told the same as well. It's very sad that we as a people can't let others do their job and go home to do what we want for ourselves....to live life on our own terms. Maybe one day people will realize that no one owes you shit and if you don't like something but it isn't hurting anyone leave it alone move on live your own life. Also some of these women and men these actors and actresses are forced to marry are unaware of what is going on same as their kids, you gotta feel for them as well. Bad situations all around.

Well, if it made him happy and it was all between consenting adults then who are we to judge?
Everyone deserves love and to be happy in life 💜 🇬🇷

No, they don’t. There’s lots of evil people in this world. Evil people deserve love?

@@jerseytomato100 So did or do you ever consider the fact that some evil people (obviously not all) are evil because of lack of being loved? You are right to a degree, with truly evil people no amount of love will ever help or change them.

I'm watching this one now! I wonder how much he felt shame for his orientation, his marriage ending, how his kids felt about all that, and so using drugs helped numb the feelings while he expressed his true desires while dealing with a world that was still very insensitive to who he was. You handled it well man. Thanks again Scott. Zapp really is a fun group to listen to. Their story is a tragic one. If you get to Dayton and/or Hamilton Ohio, there's a story there. Listen to Computer Love and More Bounce to the Ounce! Very fun stuff!

Weird timing. I just watched ALF for the first time in years a few days ago! I'm definitely shocked but not judging him. Funny show! I never heard any of this. I used to read the enquirer and star magazine, but didn't believe everything they wrote...Max was a good actor, RIP Max💔 what a nice cemetery. Thanks Scott 💜

Scott your voice and presence is so soothing and comforting. Thank you for doing your vlogs. This was such a sad story. It's so sad that people feel that they have to hide and be afraid. It should be a celebration to be who you are. We are all made uniquely beautiful and different. We have our own special mold that doesn't belong to anyone else. ❤💖
