    When I was a very young child, there was a brother and sister singing group that lived in the house directly behind ours. I would fall asleep hearing them play and sing until late in the evening. I loved when they played. Later in life I became a high school choral director, and taught thousands of children the gift of music and the art of singing. My singing neighbors? The Carpenters. The home was a small home in Downey…and where they started. Where I started.

      That house was torn down and I am looking for photos of it. Richard said it was a storybook house. Can you see if any of your family photos captured this house at all? Was your house torn down for the freeway also? Do you have photos of the street at all?

    • @shellye7052
      @shellye7052 3 месяца назад +1

      @@tabby1412 My house was not torn down for the freeway, but our next door neighbors’ home was. When my parents heard the plans of taking homes for the freeway we sold our house and moved. The Carpenter’s house was directly behind ours, so should not have been torn down. Unfortunately I don’t have pictures of our street, or theirs. We lived on Premiere.

    • @tabby1412
      @tabby1412 3 месяца назад +1

      @@shellye7052 Thanks. Richard said the address was 13024 Fidler which is on the other side of Premier and the street cuts off at 13028. If his memory is correct, it looks like the next block is gone. But he may confused about why that block was razed. There's a wall there so you can't see what's behind it. The fact that he described it as a storybook house is what interests me. It would kind of stand out in that neighborhood and they have so many photos at the other homes, but not this one.

    MGM Grand Hotel , Las Vegas 1978. I was 16 and I was fortunate my Parents and I actually shared an appreciation for some of the same music. I played drums since I was 4 and was literally infatuated with Karen. We were vacationing and what a stroke of luck The Carpenters were playing when we were there. Our seats were stage right no more than 20 feet away. When They came out I couldn’t believe how close she was. If I wanted to all I would have to do was stand up and take 2 steps and she would have been in hugging range lol. Her first note came out and I will always remember leaning over to my Dad and saying “ see? I told you her voice was real”. She was incredible and to this day I have never been affected by a voice like I have Karen Carpenter’s. Live or recorded she was spot on! I couldn’t take my eyes off of her the entire show. For her loving and loyal Fans all these years it’s hear warming to see a tribute like this done with respect, appreciation and kindness. Thank you

      I saw her at a concert at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. I believe it was 1972. Besides her great voice I was so impressed when she took over Cubby's ( former Mickey Mouse Club member) drums set and went at it. Then besides singing, playing the drums she played the flute. I have always loved the Carpenter's music and what a tragic loss. Way to early.

      I also had this disease.
      Today I can no longer imagine wearing children's clothes. Too bad that many and also Karen Carpenter have lost the fight.
      It is an uphill battle to beat the disease. By my side was and still is my husband, who has been a great help to me.
      Patients from this disease need good medical care and a strong partner or friends. My mother was not a big help, she even announced that I had anorexia at some point.
      I was still underweight and wore child size clothes.
      She later said that she had been a great help to me. *Wrong: My husband had been the biggest help*

      When I hear a song by Karen Carpenter I sometimes cry because I lose my composure.
      She has lost the fight against this terrible disease. Karen Carpenter could sing really well and her music is timeless.
      I can't sing and I am often sad because Karen Carpenter could sing and lost the fight against this disease.
      But I won the fight against this disease. Why?
      Yes I know it sounds weird reading this, but Karen Carpenter deserved a chance to fight this disease.
      From the bottom of my heart, I wish Karen Carpenter had won that fight too. Sometimes when I listen to her music, I am left thinking:
      "Why did I survive this and Karen Carpenter didn't have this strength, will and chance!".

      to listen to the music without crying.

    She had such a distinctive voice and long after she was gone even I knew who was singing on the tape deck my mom would play in the car. She had such a tragic ending with her battle with anorexia (and some still debate if drugs were involved) it's hard to believe her life ended so quickly. I hope she was able to find her peace that she couldn't find in life.

      I grew up in the 1970s listening to the carpenters music, my school friends had the tapes and when I married in 1978, we played their records at the weekends. She had a soft velvety voice, but also very sad.

    VERY nice presentation Scott. From a huge Carpenter’s fan I grew up listening to the Carpenters in the 70s, I feel your presentation was very informative and professional. You showed Karen great respect and the tour you gave me was identical to what I would want to see if I came out there from Maryland. It gave me chills as I took it all in. Thank you.

    Thanks so much for making this visit and this video. My mother is a professional drummer; so is my father. So am I, and do is my sister. My mother started playing when she was ten, all because of Karen Carpenter. She saw her on TV; it was the first time she'd seen a girl play the drums and sing lead. She started drum lessons soon after. She was always my mother's inspiration. She had the most phenomenally perfect tone. I do wish we'd had her longer.

    My mom told me about her recently. How she died was tragic and eating disorders weren’t talked about back then. I don’t even think 🤔 they were heard of in the early 80’s. I’m glad awareness has been made about them so people struggling with an eating disorder can get the help they need and not end in tragedy 🎭 like 👍 Karen Carpenter. Rest In Peace ✌🏻

    I think Karen Carpenter died not even realizing how bad her disease was. I grew up listening to The Carpenters, I have many great memories with their music. She was actually very young when she died but looked older because of her illness. I had anorexia in my 30s, not really realizing it at the time. All I knew is I wasn't eating anything, I kept losing and going down sizes until I got to a size zero, and as this was happening people kept telling me how good I looked. Then one day I went to see a good friend I hadn't seen for a few years, she opened the door and the first thing she said to me was, oh my God, you've lost too much weight! And at that moment I thought wow, I actually felt scared. It woke me up. I ended up going up a few sizes after that. I never did get help for it, because I still hadn't recognized it at that time. I was never into bulimia or laxatives. I was starving and exercising on an empty stomach. I think doing all that ruined my gallbladder I ended up having to have my gallbladder out.

    I knew this was going to be a ripper before watching it. Still have the Vinyl LP with the house (in Downey) on the cover. A precious possession for sure. Flashback to my 9 year old self, starting piano lessons in 1970 and learning Carpenters songs as they came out in real time. Again I say thank you Scott for the memories.

    Hello from Nova Scotia!🇨🇦 I was born in 82, but I distinctly remember watching the movie about her as a young child with my grandmother. It was on television, and I remember how sad I felt at that young age (not fully understanding why she passed the way she did) but then after seeing the movie I wanted to listen to their music all the time. I remember getting a cassette tape and listening to it over and over and over again. So many beautiful songs- but the one I found most interesting and different than the others was “Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft.” Give it a listen if you haven’t already!☺️

      She felt that her mother didn't really love her. She adored Richard. In therapy she was told to say i love you to Karen. She couldn't or wouldn't do it. She said she knows she's loved and got up in a huff. She just couldn't bring herself to really reach out with love. Karen never felt good enough.
      She continued to take thyroid medication even in recovery when she had no need to take it. It weakened her heart as well as the medication that made her throw up. She needed to love herself but after that disastrous marriage she never really thrived. 😢
