Hervé Jean-Pierre Villechaize (French: [ɛʁve vilʃɛz]; April 23, 1943 - September 4, 1993) was a French American actor and painter. He is best known for his role as the evil henchman Nick Nack in the 1974 James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun, and his role as Mr. Roarke's assistant, Tattoo, on the 1977-1984 American television series Fantasy Island. On Fantasy Island, his shout of "The plane! The plane!" became one of the show's signature phrases.
Though popular with the public, Villechaize proved a difficult actor on Fantasy Island, where he continually propositioned women and quarreled with the producers. He was eventually fired after demanding a salary on par with that of his co-star Ricardo Montalbán. Villechaize was replaced by Christopher Hewett.
In the early morning hours of September 4, 1993, at his North Hollywood home, Villechaize, aged 50, is believed to have first fired a shot through the sliding-glass patio door to awaken his longtime girlfriend, Kathy Self, before shooting himself. Self found Villechaize in his backyard, and he was pronounced dead at the Medical Center of North Hollywood. His ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean off Point Fermin in San Pedro, Los Angeles, California.
Villechaize left a suicide note saying he was despondent over longtime health problems. He was suffering from chronic pain due to having oversized internal organs putting increasing pressure on his body. According to Self, Villechaize often slept in a kneeling position so he could breathe more easily. He also left an audio recording of the suicide that included his last words.
At the time of his death, Cartoon Network was in negotiations for him to co-star in Space Ghost Coast to Coast, which was in preproduction at the time. Villechaize would have voiced Space Ghost's sidekick on the show.
I met Herve briefly at my husband's job at a lumber yard in North Hollywood in the mid 80s. He was there with his assistant getting materials for a home project. He was pleasant, but a bit distant, and obviously focused on the reason he was there. I was still excited to meet him in person. RIP Herve.🙏🕊

May Herve continue to RIP. I remember Fantasy Island as a child and would watch it with my parents on Saturday nights right after The Love Boat. Very nice show. Always loved your vlogs. I was so appreciative of your addressing him as a little person as opposed to those derogatory terms we grew up with. I even convinced my mom many years ago to stop using the derogatory little person term.
In my country, we watched this telefilm in the mornings, during the summer months.
Unfortunately any term other than Person is derogatory. Anything other than Person makes it sound as they are not, Humans need to categorize everything and sadly it can be unintentionally offensive or demeaning. We need to just call People, People. Scott did good here regardless keeping it touching and respectful. One day we'll all just be People and the differences apparent or not be considered irrelevant to classifications.

Thank you Scott. I grew up watching Fantasy Island. I still love it now. This story hits close to home . It's heartbreaking when people feel so much physical, mental and emotional pain and heartache that they feel suicide is their only option 💔 😪 oh my I forget about the dancing you came upon.
My mom was pen-pals with Kathy when he died. I was supposed to meet Herve when he was scheduled to film a Dunkin Donuts commercial in Nashville later that year. Would've been cool! RIP, Herve!🙏

The HBO film on Herve's life was played by Games of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage. He did a great job. Thanks for making your channel a judgement free zone. People are just terrible these days to the point its embarrassing. So sad Herve was in so much pain. His last words was ❤ breaking

I remember hearing it too, quite a long time ago. He was in so much pain. I always pictured it happening against the back of the house.
I never knew he went to the very back and was obviously concerned that he had the brick wall to stop any stray bullets from escaping.
It's too bad we couldn't have seen a bit more of the house.
I love that he didn't have any regrets.
That was the perfect spot to let his ashes go.

It wasn’t Mr. Roarke. It was the island that was magical. Mr. Roarke was like the island/hotel/fantasy manager. People usually learned lessons and changed. I was tiny, but I watched Fantasy Island every Saturday night. Sometimes it scared the heckinz out of me too. Lol RIP Hervé and Ricardo. 💐 They were amazing. 💖

I have great memories of watching "Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island." I never thought of Herve in negative terms because of his size because his character was so great on the show. People take their own lives for various reasons. It is unfortunate that he was in pain.

I wasn't much of a fan of Fantasy Island but did see a few episodes back in the day.
The ones I did see sort of reminded me of a romantic version of Twilight Zone.
Tourists come to this island with a wishful fantasy, Mr. Rourke fulfills this dream yet there is always a kind of moral lesson for the participant, who then takes the advice to heart inferring that they will leave the island and return home to enjoy their regular lives better than before.
I was only about 12 when I saw the series.
Rest in eternal peace to all who have passed who were in Fantasy island.....especially Herve.

I'm 47, and definitely had those days where Fantasy Island was the only thing on when I was growing up. I recall enjoying some of those episodes. Classic Television for sure. Thanks for sharing Scott.

I remember when he died. It was mentioned he was in so pain because his organs were continuing to grow although his height height wasn't. So just imagine his organs were mashed together with no room to accommodate it. That is painful!

I was just a few years old when Fantasy Island was big. I had a crush on him as I thought he was a kid. Mom told me he was an adult and it blew my mind but I learned about little people!
Great videi Scott loved and little people are human just liike we are, I was teacher for eight and half yeaars and i had a little person in my classroom, we had a special bond she trust me like i trusted her I do think about every so offen, ayny loved the vlog and end of this video was werid..

I really enjoyed Fantasy Island and went to the Arboretum in Arcadia which was the exterior of the house used on the show. I've been to Fermin's Point a # of times but had no idea Herve's ashes were spread there in the ocean. A # of people of committed suicide from those cliffs. I'm glad they put the sign up there about "Don't Do It" and the Suicide Hotline. Rest in Peace Herve.
