The Case for Anubis

- Anubis is, in my opinion, the best CSGO map to be released in the last 5 years. In this video, I explain why and give my points towards why I think that the map is so great. I also share a few facts about this map, and get some community members' opinions (Voo, Bleh, and Hawka.) This is my case for Anubis.
If you read this, comment "Anubis players are all crazy cool and open minded and have an unwavering passion for the game and all that"

One of the best maps?
As a member of the mapping community, it really disappointed allot of us when Anubis wasn’t added to the competition pool. It felt like valve wasn’t acknowledging our community as a legitimate source of good map design despite the fact that some of us have been mapping for 14+ years and have a massive dedicated to the craft. I really hope Anubis gets added to the competition map pool.
they are too busy shilling there shitshow creations like ancient and vertigo to care about good map design from the community
hey! i was wondering how i could start making maps, how do i start?
@@hello-zq8ku Well there are 3 youtubers i can recommend who have great tutorials and series on how to map make. But first and foremost your going to want to get a program called Hammer++ it is the superior version of regular hammer and most of the tutorial series will still translate to it. If you want to know more about it 3kliksphilip made a video on Hamer++ and why it's good, he also has some pretty good mapping videos that I recommend, in witch he explains the thought process behind how he builds maps. War Owl also has a much shorter series on his youtube about map making. But if you want really good tutorial content TopHATTwaffle is the best place for tutorials. He also runs the Source Engine Discord where people can run playtests of there maps on his servers with proper moderation and you will get feedback from us community members. I will say that Hammer is a very intimidating program because it's so old but there are plenty of tools listed in the discord (like Terrys. Auto. Radar.) witch make it way easier to work with. don't be afraid to join the discord and ask questions.
@@NightGhost-qs6yw i see i see thank you so much! I'm not really free this semester but ill make sure to try it and spend even more time on it next semester, thank you for the reply! I've tried installing hamer++ but i kinda got stuck and then i just forgot about it lol
can you link waffle's starter video?

I'm scared anubis won't make it into the comp pool... It's a community made map and after cache is removed all maps are in control of Valve.
Definitely the one thing I dislike most about csgo atm; there's no incentive or push to play the new maps they get added. People just stick to the same 3 maps because "they know how to play them". Adding like a map rotation or ban system would be cool, push players out of their comfort zone. Hopefully the new operation has more challenges for new maps
@@iamadogguys true
@@iamadogguys I think it would be cool if the casual game mode was just community maps. Like you're not playing for elo or serious competition when you play casual. So I don't know why we need to be playing the competitive maps.
@@armeretta i’ve been pretty adamant to friends in closed discussions that a community server that hosts community maps with a casual ruleset would be so great, It’s something I’d really like to see happen, but it’s unlikely because community servers are so dead these days
@@iamadogguys that would bring maybe like 10% of players I feel. most people just grind points and never touch the map again. Might have to do it like Valorant, where everyone hated icebox but now like the map because it was forced onto them
Anyone watching after Anubis got added to the map pool?
As a person with multiple maps officially added (Mutiny and Ember), Anubis deserves to be given a shot at a professional level as it is a great map, both in layout design and aesthetically.
This is a great video on the whole
Haha glad I could help out with some thoughts, clearly we need to spread the good word of Anubis to more community members
W
You actually convinced Gaben, nice!
Anubis players are all crazy cool and open minded and have an unwavering passion for the game and all that.
I also like Anubis and I don't know why many of the players straight s*** on it.
The Counterstrike community is very conservative and likes to stick to the old classics.
I play a lot of Valorant recently and the maps in this game are far more progressive and different to the classical CS:GO maps which is great.
The players are also less toxic, more open-minded and you meet a lot of girls playing which you'll never encounter in CS:GO.

Truly one of the best community maps of all time, amazing layout, great utility opportunity and strategic depth
my biggest issue with anubis isnt the layout. i love the layout. but i am so sick of deserts. i dont play dust2 much anymore and i really rarely visit mirage. but tuscan caught my eye because of the colors used. i really want to play anubis but with less orange and brown everywhere.
Anubis with Ancient or Nuke theme colour would be so good.
Late reply but that's weird, after a couple of games I really dislike Tuscan colors. Just grey everywhere :D
This aged well
Your prayers have been answered! Kinda nice to see a more thought out take than "New map, me no like."
Looks like Valve saw the potential after all!
We need to look at more mapcore maps and be rotating maps in way more often. Anubis is a great start to rotating in new maps.
hey, thanks for making this video. Anubis is definitely a map i know a lot of people sleep on and while not perfect, it does need to see top level play badly. definitely inspires me to continue working on my own csgo mapping ventures.
One month later and your dream is now reality
This aged well..
What sticks with me from the first time Anubis was around is how long it takes for T's to get anywhere. For example I remember getting rushed/peaked from B main and sewers a lot, and never being able to get any mid control, with A rushes being less common. And to fix that all they really need to do is make it take a little longer for CTs to get to B/mid. Also for A I agree, it needs a change, I feel like they could have a second entrance for T's that is onto that elevated little bit near A main and use the elevated section in canals as to get to that new entrance.
I'm glad they took out Dust II, Dust II is designed to small for the year 2023 almost and I think Anubis has potential but I must say I liked Tuscan a little bit more, but maybe it will will come for Mirage in the near year
Your wish has come true! Anubis is in the mappool now. Thanks for this video!
They called u a mad man
watched this video in the morning today. Sometime later Anubis was officialy added to the map pool. Lol, that`s what I call some good timing
Been meaning to learn it and now that Valve finally made it active duty I've been playing ranked and it plays amazing. Lot of clipping issues to iron out but the layout is awesome. Loving it.
Amazing timing on the video!
I love Anubis. I really want to see what pros can get out of it. In my ideal world a map or two gets rotated out of the map pool after every single major (followed by a player break right after majors so players have time to learn it).
edit: and now they actually added it after a major
The comeback of Anubis and Tuscan is the reason i started playing csgo again
I think it was Warowl who made a very good suggestion in for the map Pool.
He said that valve should rotate maps through every 3 moths kinda like seasons.
Id definitely like to see that
then teams would just not practice or pick maps that are about to be removed limiting then map pool
removing season remake was the worst decision ever it should have become a competitive map. santorini too.
3 months would be far too short. Teams would just perma ban whatever map was up next for removal so that they could get 6 months to hone every other map and work on whatever map was rotating into the pool. If the information wasnt made public which map was rotating then i think teams would be super up in arms because 3 months is far too short. min 6 months, preferably 12 imho.
@@SaintedPIacebo cs scene would be a much better place without map bans. Simply declare what mapcycle you are going to include in the tournament and select a random map every match. it's not team skill if you can't play on all maps without prep.
@@metasamsara oh my God lol not way. They used to have randomized third maps and it was awful. It was hated by everyone and it lead to some stinker matches.
As soon as Anubis came back to MM, me and my friend instantly put it into our standard queue of Mirage, Cache, Vertgo and Nuke. Anubis feels great but it can be polished and changed a lot more (mid and A, specifically). I haven’t played Tuscan but I really feel like people are enjoying it more for nostalgia reasons.
Tuscan is completely nostalgia nothing else
That map is horrible to play
Penguin, we approve.

Thank you, have a nice day.
Ive known Roald, the maker of Anubis since early 2014. He was always keen to hear what youre working on and show what new projects and ideas hes been whipping up in hammer, unlike many other map makers in the scene who very much have a bit of an ego stuck up their ass (Cough tophatwaffle and co.) and didnt want people to compete for their postenital incomne, just keep them interested at a hobby level. Hes just a genuine lad and loves to see any form of project progress.
If anyone over all these years of maps being added through operations deserves a map added to Active duty is people like Roald, catfood, morozov and quoting just to name a few :)
Aw that's so nice to hear, thanks man
I still can't make the case for Anubis but I can absolutely make the case for Santorini, it goes under a lot of people's radars (except Anomaly, I think he's single-handedly keeping the case for Santorini being competitively viable alive). That map was released with the Wildfire Operation and it is still to this day my favorite competitive map CS has ever seen. The color palette and the style perfectly fits CS's new vibrant aesthetic and for competitive play it's extremely well-designed and thought-out, and what few flaws I find it to have could be patched up with updates like every other CS map in history. PLEASE do a video on Santorini and analyze its greatness, it needs a bigger light shone on it. The one-way drop-down onto B site from Mid is a high-risk high-reward play, the risky tunnel going into A site that can lead down a direct line-of-sight path to the CTs or breaking off into the building on the site for better cover but taking longer to get into site, the always hectic mid peek from both sides reminds me of Mirage's mid plays. It's such a fantastic map and I can't speak highly enough about it, Valve needs to bring it back ASAP I think the community would fall in love with it all over again
I downloaded that map and still play it to this day because of how much I loved it, despite it coming out maybe 8 or 9 years ago.
I hope de_ruby would blow in praise some day. I really love this map. It's small, very dynamic and has very good layout.
love anubis played it a lot in 2020 but with the current community maps in the game atm I actually think that Breach is the best community map added to the game in a long time. just a super fun map that feels fluid and fun to play
I played this map a fair few times during beta testing. Mid changed a lot everytime, while the rest of the map just seemed to work. Originally, mid only had the double door section, but it was always Janky, and unpushable. The addition of the inner mid peak really changed up how mid was played for the better, but i feel that it didn't fix some of the underlying issues of mid, and untimatily, that Ts does not push mid that much makes A see much less play.
I didn't like it too at first, but the more I played it, the more I liked it :D Wish more people played it. Mind doing similar video for Breach? I think it has potential too as it felt good to play for me since the first time, when it was in MapCore hub. Anyway, keep up the good content man 💙

Your dreams have come true with the newest update!
You got your wish.
they heard u
Anubis looks like a strange map from the outside, with a awkward mid and to big choke points on each site, but the map is designed for you to take opportunities on both sides. Take drop for example, you can’t reliably use it to quickly rotate as CT, or rush as T, because it’s in the open in no man’s land. But you still need to respect it, as if you all rush lower for example, a CT can push up or even behind you. It’s a map with a lot of give and take map control wise, and I feel like given a shot in Active Duty, it could settle into a really interesting meta
It's crazy how I've played exactly 1 CSGO match but have seen all of your videos.
I guess that says something about your videos, keep it up
Its like Valve team was cooperating with you and the pros lately
as the guy who loved anubis right when it was released in 2021, invented my own callouts for the entire fucking map, invented A and B site smokes and queued anubis only for up to 30 minutes wait time just to get 30 frags on it bc no one else had learnt the map and then complained on twitter, hltv and reddit how our playerbase doesnt give enough attention to new maps anymore, i felt really accomplished when it was added to the professional map pool
fair play
that was so nicely predicted
well this one aged well...
Bro you’re clearly the best cs chanel of the year (at least for me) I feel like you deserve way more subs.
Keep on the good pace
0:12 "New masterpieces", and you show Vertigo for a second... I was about to have a heart attack :D
There's something about Anubis' visuals that feels bad, maybe its just it being another sandy map. Also you guys know when you're at a zoo or something and there are those fake sculpted rocks, the entire map feels like that to me.
it's all beige except for sewers and ct spawn ._.
basalt is still legitimately my favorite map that got removed after a short period of 6 months
Yeah Basalt and Austria were sick, imo more fun than Anubis but I'd still rather see a shakeup with Anubis or any map replacing Mirage. Hell I wouldn't mind Ancient getting swapped out too, god I hate Ancient it's like a Valorant map, so blocky and boxy.
If Valve don't force a change in the map pool we'll never see it, the players are extremely against change even though there are so many fantastic community maps out there. Hopefully we get more maps in CS Source 2 but I doubt it, we'll be watching pros play Mirage and Dust 2 for the rest of our lives.
@@cheesypoohalo Ancient's the modern version of mirage, only better. Fight me :P
@@dank3k I hate both fight me
@@dank3k It being so boxy is a big problem, you have 2 corners to clear on both sides of every entrance as a result, so it's currently the most CT sided map.
@@sterlingdriggs8806 I don't think it is, any stats?
Anubis is currently one of my fave maps to play. I loved it back in 2019 and was really bummed they removed it, but now that its back i only got better at it and now i just am sad that nobody else plays it :(
Should Anubis have a second T route to A site? Perhaps using that upper platform to cross over to a high up a push?
I'm so glad Anubis got re-added. Really hope it all goes well and we see it in Paris!!
Hello how are you all
good hbu
Doing good, hope your day is doing well so far
I am good thx

i agree, i think the only thing keeping anubis from running toe to toe with mirage and cache are a few extra movement obstacles/ skill jumps.
They should add a heaven entry towards A by just extending the existing one! And as you said, maybe a little bit changes in Ct mid
And they should add Austria again, cause it feels like a snow Anubis 😅
It would be great to see your look on cs_italy, cs_militia and de_piranesi maps and why they are not there in csgo. They were actualy so interesting maps to play but for some reason completely removed from the game
italy and militia still exist in casual mode 👋
well looks like you and the commentators on this video are living the dream right now.
Anubis seems to miss a bit of work for competitive. It seems to lack balanced diversity in how you can approach it. With T's it seems extremely restrictive in how you can approach a round, there are handful of options you have, and then you either succeed or not in executing that option. The three lanes don't interact much at all, they're self-contained fights and you just have to pick a fight you win, and then have secondary defensive fight on another lane, and you've just won the round. You can pick and choose the lanes but there's really only three options per lane, full push, defensive hold, and no presence, and you only have two outcomes, success or failure.
Mid is breaking that ever so slightly as it interacts with two lanes, but it's extremely duel-heavy, so it's not that interesting tactically either.
If they opened up some lane a bit, making the engagement there more flexible and dynamic, I think the map would be vastly better for it. A few extra angles/routes for T's. Maybe rework the mid/canal a bit so the drop is not one-way and provide more interesting duel for canal with more angles, and you'd have really interesting map.
aged like fine wine my friend
what happened
Revisiting this video because you nailed it!
Anubis is awesome. First time i played it, it had a charm that made it feel like it could have alot of depth as people play it more
I, as a loyal CS player(been playing since I was 7) love the changes. I am so sick of Mirage and Dust I can't even find the words to describe it, but I have to play it for mm and all, because people don't play other maps that much. Anubis, was like a dream to me, when it got released, I couldn't believe my eyes. I am so in love with Ancient Egypt and everything about it. So this map is amazing for me. The aesthetic is unmatched. The water, double doors, hieroglyphics...Every little detail is beautiful. For the gameplay, I, also am a big fan of B site, it's much more accessible and fun. The mid is, as you mentioned, usually too much work and too risky, with too little reward. I am very indecisive about the pro league though. It's a weird thing to say, I know, but I don't want Anubis to be so mainstream and boring with time. I wanna keep it for myself even haha Additionaly I think that this map might just be one of the very few maps that favor the T side, even if by a tiny tiny bit of percentage. But the CT spawn is much more cooler :) Thank you for the video, I think we are one of the very few people who has good taste in maps ☺️
Anubis could honestly be a utility centric map like mirage with fast pace site pushing but also have that aim duel/and quick rotation like dust 2 through middle or canals. The thing that intrigues me the most about Anubis is the endless amount of play and counter play that hasn’t been tapped in to. Like when I’m canals if for some reason you have canal control you could boost to mid for a fast mid to b or mid to a split if you find yourself in a late round situation with a player or two down either side to throw off timings for ct or even t in a retake situations. That’s what excites me is the untapped potential of this map and ways to exploit and push the meta of the map
I like Anubis, but I want Tuscan, and Cobblestone being added too!
Anubis now in the Active Duty, congratz :)
I found the Tuscan remake from the update a lotta fun too
I have liked this map since it was released in csgo but i will do something with mid, because holding it while being ct is sometimes too ez. I always get multiple kills through the smoke with m4a1-s, maybe placing some bigger obstacle will do something
Great video i've loved Anubis since it came out in 2020 also its one of my favourite maps along with inferno and cache
would love to see competitive teams strategize and deploy their tactics upon this map
This aged extremely well and since I started playing CS on Anubis, I ain't complaining.
I love this map, im glad its getting some attention
I played few (too few tbh, but that's just because people don't want to play it) competitive matches on Anubis and this map just works. Sure, it needs few tweaks like brushes for easier smokes and flashes, but except that it should be part of map pool for sure.
0:57 A lineups (welp the A heaven smoke has changed)
2:15 B lineups
You were 100% spot on.
THANK YOU! Thank you for shedding light on my favorite map. I've been saying a majority of the same things you said in this video for a long while now, and my friends love it too. This map deserves to be in the active duty map pool more than any other map rn, and I really hope Valve pulls through.
Always love playing community made maps with my friends, also have lesser chance of vsing someone who know all their utilities. Anubis, Tuscan, basalt and Iris were our personal favourites.
I generally don't particularly like any new CSGO maps, but ever since it came out the first time Anubis quickly became one of my favorites, right alongside Mirage and Nuke
i came back after they added anubis to the map pool, and damn u were right all along
your content is chill, nice to watch, has stuff that I like, such as cs and maps, and your voice is smooth, +sub bro
The funny thing is that I think breach is actually better. Mid is better, the utility is easy to learn, and B site is also very unique.
"We need to take A site - and PUSH IT, somewhere else!"
In all seriousness A site can be cut-pasted closer to T-spawn, adjust CT spawn, and refitting mid to work with that is the opportunity to shake up those awkward angles.
Personally, I think A Site is much better than the credit it is given. I think it integrates pretty well with Mid despite the other failings of mid. I also find the push from A Site into CT very interesting with potential to catch mid players rotating to B site.
I like anubis, but I still disagree with the site names. A should be called B and B should be called A.
A site on anubis reminds me a lot more of B on other maps than A, I've called the wrong site multiple times because it's so unintuitive.
Hi Mr. Penguin good to see someone who loves and wants new maps. Saddens me when every new map is met with "too many angles" and thrown in the bin by the community. Since I started playing in operation Phoenix I have spent as much time as possible playing custom maps because they are almost always only available for a limited time. Are there any older custom maps that you think didn't get the recognition they deserved? For me it's Black Gold, Mist, Empire and Royal, not that they were necessarily the best maps ever, but they were excellent in casual play at the very least and just seemed to go under the radar.
As of now, Anubis is a part of the active duty map pool, so congratulations!
Absolutely agrees on the A entrance issue. I would say this disconnnected entrance made it far too easy for CT to just do single A and play for contact, and probabally stack 3 B, as the middle door is also not very nice to attack.
Also, being utility heavy is very likely why people hate it.
It may be interesting to see in pro play, since they will actually know utility. But as you mentionned, middle and A need some rework.
what an absolut legend! a f***ing time traveler among us 🤯🤯👏
Anubis in the active duty map pool now
Holding mid with two people and make one rotate as nassecary seems like the best Strat to me
Make a throwback video showcasing subzero pleeeaaase it’s such a good looking map
2:52 vertigo has one between the b stairs and a ramp where you don't need to cross mid
I'm still new to playing csgo. I loved playing Iris, it felt refreshing and fun. It's layout somewhat interesting to me. Was bumped out when they removed it, but I heard a lot of good things about Anubis (of course Tuscan was a huge topic). First impression it felt so wide yet a bit claustrophobic at some areas. After a few games, I really enjoy T-side Anubis.
Wow, congratulations! I hope you're happy now :)
I'll certainly take my time to learn the map, you made a convincing case for it
I hope we get both Anubis and Tuscan. I also really want to see a de_contra remake. There is a CSGO port and it was one of the best maps in the competitive pool for CS:Source.
I think valve and ESL should do quarterly map rotations for active duty pool
Yup
I have only played Anubis once on a shitty laptop without a mousepad and slightly tipsy. I got 25 kills but didn't really like the experience. You just convinced me to give it a proper go.
