If he was a helicopter parent, he would have been at the house every weekend cleaning up for his son, rather than letting him have his own life with his friends.
As a landlord I gotta be on the tenant side come on you know darnwell you're renting to 5 college boys... Every night there's party's, pizza, beer, trash. That's why you always charge extra to college kids because you know darn well there's gonna be damage and and a mess to clean up when they leave. My unit at SFU usually rents for 1600 a month I charge 3200 a month for college kids..
I am betting that they will since it was won on national TV. The landlord might just give in and pay them all back. The old tenants need to educate the new tenants about the landlord's tactics.
Some landlords need to be smarter and more knowledgeable on landlord/tenant laws. The average person doesn't realize how difficult it can be to be a landlord. But, the landlords, especially seasoned ones, should be more selective with choosing tenants and be sure to know the laws in their state down to the T. Anyone who rents to college students, especially frat boys, doesn't really care about the quality of their property but instead the income it produces. So he got what he deserved unfortunately 🤷♀️
this landlord knew exactly what he was doing, he neglected to know the father was a lawyer and expected them all to roll over and allow his fraud, but this time it came back to bite him. Hopefully he will learn a lesson and not try this again. He rents to college kids especially to rip them off like he did
Judge Milian always has to one up lawyers who appear in her courtroom what the hell is it about a lawyer who becomes a Judge that then seems to dislike all other attorneys to the point of annoyance Judge Judy is guilty of this too LEARN TO LISTEN SOME DAMN TIME AS WELL! 💯

I feel sori for the landlord. But he is negligent in not utilizing the correct procedure. Hopefully he learns a lesson he will never forget. Learn old man..learn
You can't really feel sorry for him. He knew what he was getting into. He was "smart" enough to have spreadsheets and paperwork for some things, so he's not a complete dummy. Plus renting to college students is a slippery slope for any landlord, especially 7 frat boys. He's income driven and that's ok, but this is probably the first time one of the tenant's Daddy is a lawyer, so he probably usually gets away with charging up for a bunch of things. Think about it, $560 X 7. Yeah, he didn't make out too bad if this is the only one out of the 7 who sued.
Understand the defendants desire to protect his property but he over reached. Plaintiff's father seems over bearing. His son needs to learn to speak for himself, IMO.
I had an employee who was struggling with the job, and his father a renowned attorney got involved. He made the situation worse, and he ended up getting his son terminated. He even tried to Sue me, I was actually on the employee’s side and spoke up for him to corporate. Which was proven. Dad needs to let his son deal with his issues on his own.
Most people see there a difference between parents involvement in their kids lives while at college, more often than not the students can't get in the institutions and sign leases without the backing of the parents. While I agree helicopter parenting is a problem - your experience being an example, as it highly likely its the dad's signature on the bottom of deposit cheque the landlord took, hence why the father has standing in law to sue him, this case isn't comparable to your experience over the employment dispute. If landlord didn't want the father involved, don't take his money in the first place.

@@danmiller8223 no I am pretty sure each had a separate lease and individual deposits. Sounds like a lot but that is how it works in larger college towns. Each kid might have been paying as much $750 a month.

It’s a racket in many situations. They nickel and dime students because they don’t reply to notices or read the lease. It’s only a different story when the parents get involved and know the law.
It’s goes to the college towns for landlord tenant ordinances that allow renting to more than four adults for a single property. Some towns are smart to limit the number of adult renters and also follow up on enforcement.
I lived in a college community, Rutgers Newark NJIT and Rutgers med school and the frat houses. And yes many of the students damage places, several drug issues including robberies and a muder. Ive seen it all, throwing bottles, kicking out windows, for no reason, running around drunk, fights and these were small campuses. The large Rutgers campus I can only imagine.
I'm not a lawyer, and I know that the landlord can't just go into the tenant's house anytime he feels like it. I also know that he can't decide that they have to pay × dollars for something unless they've previously agreed to it, unless it's part of the law (luke damages).
She worked that 2000 dollar lawyers lawsuit down to 670, that was awesome, My question is did they actually vacate when they left their furniture there for 2 weeks the other tenants moved in and gave them permission when like the sign the landlord didn't want it there, so if you gave the landlord leeway on the sign and pipes wouldn't you have to agree the furniture was not allowed to be there, however my next question is could the landlord sue the new tenants for the incident to recuperate his loss because they against his wishes allowed the former tenants to store things the landlord didn't allow there! One more thing, can the Landlord sue the Fraternity, or the College!
First off, there wasn't any real leeway on the sign/pipes - JM just told the college students to remove them as they still live in the town. That's the landlords compensation, the removal. As the landlord didn't do a walk through with anyone on the old lease and looks to in fact not been onsite till 2 weeks after they were out and the new tenants in, (who he also didn't have a walk through with it appears) it's difficult for him to start arguing "his wishes' have been violated in regards to the property as he's not following the processes for accessing if the old tenants has vacated and the state of the property prior to the new tenancy. As the furniture was removed by the sound of it in short order with the new tenants living there paying rent and they don't seemed to have minded he's got no leg to stand on arguing he 'suffered a loss' with legal standing. As the last question, he couldn't sue them over the lease as neither the Fraternity nor the College were parties to the lease. I don't know if you picked this up, but he had individual leases with each of the 7 boys (and their respective guarantors- ie parents- hence why the Dad has standing to sue). In the same way say if a bunch of work mates rented a place together which they organized themselves, the landlord can't sue their employer due issues he has with his tenants.
He pretends to be all surprised that the house wasn’t left behind looking like a bright sparkling showroom, knowing that he rents it out to 7 students each year… That’s not believable.
He knows what he is doing and rents it to students on purpose so he can charge them over and over again for cleaning somewhat…. A despicable way to conduct business.
The real estate company I was raised and worked with in Philadelphia were VERY SMART, Sororities took care of their houses. BUT Fraternities. I remember I asked about them I heard a staff member say "were not having an Animal House". The Frat houses were permitted to use them as "meeting" rooms NOT for living. Meaning NO parties. It worked too.
This landlord always rents to college kids and doesn’t care because he knows there will be some damage or filth and so he takes advantage of them and the situation. It gives him an opportunity to keep 7 young people’s deposits at $560 or $1000 whichever it was. He is getting a nice bag💰 Even if they painted on the walls. He doesn’t really care he has buckets of paint. This guy is also too hands on. He shouldn’t be removing anything from the house.
Our next door frat boys put bags & bags of beer cans out to the curb every week. We made several hundred dollars that year at 5 cents a can deposit lol. Major parties...revolving taxi service from college to frat house. Crazy times.
I don't get it. I've seen JM tell parents to let the "child" handle their own case multiple times. I've seen her tell parents to stop talking, sit down and leave the courtroom. Her usual saying is something like, "I'm a parent, I understand, but let them do this on their own, etc." However, she let this grown man's father handle the entire case. What makes him different from all the other "children" that have their parents up there with them?
The father for sure paid the deposit and more than likely was down in his son's lease as a guarantor. In these college towns the lease arrangements almost always require a parent to be named as a guarantor as the kids have zero credit history usually and the landlords won't get any insurance on the place without having someone standing behind the tenant student with some financial assets if say the place burns down. You missed the beginning where they listed both father and son as joint plaintiffs in the cases - the father being in fact the primary as it was the refund to him from the landlord directly which had been short changed. JM can't tell someone who has legal standing to sue in his own right he can't argue his own case.
Yes when they brought their parents as company and support not when their parents are their attorney, had they come in with an attorney, they too would not be speaking unless spoken to. That’s the point of an attorney
what makes it different the dad is a lawyer he may not specialize in that sort of law but he knows how to talk to a judge its like using a family member that is a professional im a massage therapist and family have come to me and ive helped them that doesnt mean this kid was one of those other cases hes being smart and not letting these cons take his money for frivolous things noone can prove the dad paid everything we dont know their living situation however we do know these crooks took advantage of 7 college students and there might be more this is different i think all of us here would have gone to family if they were lawyers to make sure we werent getting taken advantage of

I got scammed just like this when I rented my first apartment. I couldn’t afford a lawyer so I just lost the money.
I am sorry that happened! I have taken two of my old landlords to small claims court and won both times. Knowing your rights helps!
Teach your children to respect people's property
Absolutely!
This daddy said “let me handle this son” and so still treats him like a child.
Come on the landlord freely admitted the place was graffitied before the boys moved in, this wasn't an immaculately clean place.

As a landlord I gotta be on the tenant side come on you know darnwell you're renting to 5 college boys... Every night there's party's, pizza, beer, trash.
That's why you always charge extra to college kids because you know darn well there's gonna be damage and and a mess to clean up when they leave.

I am betting that they will since it was won on national TV. The landlord might just give in and pay them all back. The old tenants need to educate the new tenants about the landlord's tactics.
'don't even talk anymore'🤣🤣🤣🤣
My apartment in college was immaculate. I lived alone but was in a sorority too. Don’t damage other folks stuff
happy to see new episodes, yay I've been watching old ones lol
He rents to college kids especially to rip them off like he did
College students renting an apartment, yeh, they will leave it with lots of damage. That said, Judge Marilyn is one smart cookie!

So that means he owes the other 6 students $600 EACH they BETTER get their money lol
I dont think he thought all this was going to be brought up court. He's probably been pocketing kids deposit money for years. Its legal.
Not possible, they only paid $1000 total security deposit for the 7. Their share should come out of the $670
@@danmiller8223 they paid $1000 each. Which makes the total deposit $7000

Honestly she should have pressed the adult college student to present the case. Tell daddy lawyer to step back!
Thats when you supposed to do your job because both are apart of the BAR
I agree. However, I'm sure she has to be careful not to appear to favor someone just because they're an attorney. She has her moments, but she does have a way of tearing up people who deserve it.
I don't think she can across that way at all.
She told the attorney he was wrong about NJ's double pay law then awarded him the double pay in the end. lol. She can never accept when she's wrong.

Landlords think the deposit is "free" money for them to keep once tenants vacate
I feel sori for the landlord. But he is negligent in not utilizing the correct procedure. Hopefully he learns a lesson he will never forget. Learn old man..learn
Exactly ! ...
Why spell sorry sori?
You can't really feel sorry for him. He knew what he was getting into. He was "smart" enough to have spreadsheets and paperwork for some things, so he's not a complete dummy. Plus renting to college students is a slippery slope for any landlord, especially 7 frat boys. He's income driven and that's ok, but this is probably the first time one of the tenant's Daddy is a lawyer, so he probably usually gets away with charging up for a bunch of things. Think about it, $560 X 7. Yeah, he didn't make out too bad if this is the only one out of the 7 who sued.
My bet is this is the first time he was taken to court over not returning deposits.

Understand the defendants desire to protect his property but he over reached. Plaintiff's father seems over bearing. His son needs to learn to speak for himself, IMO.
This kid doesn’t act like a college grad….is he expecting Dad to do his job interviewing?
Daddy loved the idea of being on People’s Court. I am sure he added it to his website bio.
It was probably dad's money though lol
Most people see there a difference between parents involvement in their kids lives while at college, more often than not the students can't get in the institutions and sign leases without the backing of the parents.
While I agree helicopter parenting is a problem - your experience being an example, as it highly likely its the dad's signature on the bottom of deposit cheque the landlord took, hence why the father has standing in law to sue him, this case isn't comparable to your experience over the employment dispute. If landlord didn't want the father involved, don't take his money in the first place.
🙄
@@user-uy6uc5ey5q too many people try to take advantage of the kids hence why sometimes the parent's do need to step in. both my daughters worked at McDonald's and one was constantly not paid properly and she had spoken to them and was being ignored until I went up there and spoke to them. The landlord is greedy. He kept over $500 from each kid...he should have paid them some of the money back when they complained vs coming to court. The son is blessed to have such an intelligent and supportive father.
Daddy was coddling the kid. He should have only been in that courtroom for moral support. Yeah the landlord was not prepared and expected not to be taken to court. It is a cash cow with very little problems until real crimes occur on the property.
I used to be the housekeeper for a sorority, the frat house next door being "Pigma Sue" (you know what I mean.) Serious party frat. The head "dude" from back East got wind of how filthy the house was and he paid them a "friendly' visit. DON'T RENT TO 7 NOT 1 BUT 7 COLLEGE STUDENTS.😂🤣
Absolutely agree! It’s only asking for trouble! 🤦♀️

Great Case
This is a very interesting case!
How did I know this kids dad was a lawyer just by watching them walk in 🤣🤣
It is TRUE = That is HOW college boys live. I have seen it when my son was in college. It is so TRUE!
He pretends to be all surprised that the house wasn’t left behind looking like a bright sparkling showroom, knowing that he rents it out to 7 students each year…
That’s not believable.
Judge on fleek today...
The Defendant was mean mugging The Father 😂😂😂😂
Our next door frat boys put bags & bags of beer cans out to the curb every week. We made several hundred dollars that year at 5 cents a can deposit lol. Major parties...revolving taxi service from college to frat house. Crazy times.
Another ounce of my saliva..😆
I’d bet that the father is the one who paid the deposit. It’s his money on the line so he has legal standing to fight for the return
what makes it different the dad is a lawyer he may not specialize in that sort of law but he knows how to talk to a judge its like using a family member that is a professional im a massage therapist and family have come to me and ive helped them that doesnt mean this kid was one of those other cases hes being smart and not letting these cons take his money for frivolous things noone can prove the dad paid everything we dont know their living situation however we do know these crooks took advantage of 7 college students and there might be more this is different i think all of us here would have gone to family if they were lawyers to make sure we werent getting taken advantage of
