    My son is 18 months old who is not diagnosed yet, but is showing some signs of ASD. One of his issues is that he puts literally everything in his mouth. What will be a good reinforcement for his situation. Thank you so much for not only this video but any video you upload in your channel. They are very helpful!

      Get him sensory appropriate items to chew. It is a sensory seeking behavior and he is looking for stimulation. This is a common thing with Autistic kids. You can also get him into an OT and find out if he has any issues.

    Hi Mary,
    Thank you for your videos, which enable many families with autistic kids to support their loved ones.
    By implementing your tips, my son has progressed from non-verbal to making 4/5 sentences like:
    "I want apple and raspberry juice please"... Whlist holding my hands, he would say "let's go"
    I am now thinking of becoming an ABA therapist to be able to support him in other areas. What is the best and quickest way of doing this as I am currently home schooling him.
    Little background- I am based in London. My first degree is in politics and my 5 year old is yet to be diagnosed (has been on waiting list for years)
    I look to hearing from you. Thank you!

    That’s was great advice. Is giving stickers or rewards in a classroom for doing good work a good practice? My 6 year old daughter came to me twice this week sad for being the only one that didn’t get a sticker and small prize for not getting high points on an activity. How can that be motivating? she also has developmental challenges and has trouble focusing. Is this type of reward system common in schools?

      We would want to have a more individualized system and one where she can be successful. Does she have support in the classroom?

    My 17 month old does alot of walking on his sibling like he isn't there he doesn't even make eye contact with him and when his baby brother gets close and touches him he screams but he won't let his little brother play with his toys there is no sharing when it comes to him

    my son hits when he doesn't get what he wants right away or the answer is no. He will hit whoever is closest. we have tried talking and telling him that hitting won't get him what he is asking for and he will sit and ask again then we will get him his request. But... how do we redirect when it's something he can't have?

    • @marybarbera
      @marybarbera  4 года назад

      Sometimes redirecting. Or saying "no tv but you can play with this(next preferred toys)" . Sometimes saying not now , let's play ball. Finding ways to prevent it as you build skills. Check out a free workshop to learn more here www.marybarbera.com/workshops

    Hello! I can’t discourage my daughter’s behavior effectively. Her loud screaming, yelling and hitting makes ME go nuts. I have severe sensory problems ☹️ my children have ASD and I’m sure I AM too. (I’m 41 and not diagnosed). How can I help them? (I can’t help myself). Your information remind me of my psych developmental class. Thanks for the video!

      I have the same exact problem with my 8 Year old once he starts screaming and hitting it's Very hard to calm him down takes me atl least 10min to do so

      M C My daughter can take up to 45 minutes most times. and it’s not a once a day episode.

    • @marybarbera
      @marybarbera  4 года назад

      We always want to think about how we can prevent problem behavior. If I gave you a million dollars to make it so she didn't scream, what could you do. This is normally a good place to start.

    How do I deal with the autism with four other siblings who feel she’s treated differently compared to them

    • @marybarbera
      @marybarbera  3 года назад

      equality does not equal equity. Perhaps education for the siblings as to why she may need extra support could help.
