  • Today we finally get to finish the video series on the Swamp Rat. This was a 14' flat bottom jon boat that we installed the Mudskipper 7.5hp surface drive kit on. We then built the engine with a performance cam, billet rod, billet flywheel, upgraded valve springs, and Mikuni carb. The engine doubled its Hp but how did it perform on the water? Stay tuned to find out!!!

    Braxton got one hell of a deal on his trade. That stratos with that engine is capable of 70 mph and a good rig. As for the mud motor yes it needed to be propped to wrap in the power band at wot.

    Sounded to me like you had too much pitch on the prop to let the RPM come up. A lower pitch prop would let the RPM come up and put less stress on the belt. Also you would get a better hole shot and more likely more speed. Kind of like changing gear ratios.

    • @swhalstead
      @swhalstead Год назад +2

      True, the prop is a major tuning tool in a boat. Diameter/pitch/number of blades/blade shape. The prop needs less diameter and or pitch to get the rpm up on the motor, then you’ll know the true potential with that motor.

    If your building a mud motor, i suggest beaver dam stuff. Ive had a 6hp mudskipper for 10 years and recently got the beaver dam for a 440 duro and its built way better.

    Your videos are awesome.Keep up the great work.I put a 212 on a kayak but the fake mikuni carburetor was acting up so I was only able to go full speed and when I slowed down it will shut off.

    your rite about the RPM vs.hp limit etc.. with these 212's on the water.. Theres a certain point of no-return with these engines in the water world..
    youll get too a point, were more hp, rpm, more power, different props, really wont make more speed.. Theres certain sweet spot' that is different on every setup.
    I tried different style props, sizes, more rpm, more cam, more carb, more exhaust, and i never did get over my 20 mph goal "(with my flat bottom 10ft boat) my best was 18mph, and at 4800rpm.. and im happy with that for now..
    your rite about every thing you said with top speed (with this motor drive setup anyway)
    Ive heard the only true way too get more speed, is a TRUE -LONGTAIL, and or, a big block.etc.
    you need too get the prop figured out, and get it back farther behind the boat, like they do in Thailand. and then power and rpm will make more speed.. also theboat design, andthe wake it makes behind it..andwere the prop is in the water etc..
    Because these "shorttail motors hit a limit.

      What evidence do you have that the Tillotson 212 is not 10hp? Also, where do Tillotson claim 10hp? I can't see the claim on their website. Private sellers might make hp claims, but resellers are not Tillotson.

    hey, your HP means nothing. go learn about HP and TQ. Your max TQ is at 4500rpm. you need constant torque on a boat. Your engine is happiest at its max torque rpm, because that is the rpm where the engine is the most efficient.
