A cool concept! I think a well written story would put this game in the pantheon of great horror games. If they make a 2nd, I hope they really focus on the story!
It’s awesome, I was on the fence for a while but the more I watched the more I liked it! You really have to pay attention to the story because it’s got more plot twists than a woke convention 😂 Seriously tho, it’s a work of art in its own way, very unique, yeah a little rough but it looks better than it did at release so we can see the devs are still working on it, let’s give them a break eh.
@KnightNova88 yeah it's definitely janky but I would pay $50 for this all day just because it's a unique experience and that's hard to come by. Plus I kinda like the jank lol
Game is clearly rough in many ways, but it grew on me greatly. It really is the kind of game that becomes a hidden gem or develops a cult following. I kinda love its unique style. Its been such a long time since I played a game wirh actual possession mechanics too. Really hoping its a hit and they get to make a sequel. An open world-ish/yakuza game with these mechanics and style would be great.
Had this in my wishlist since it dropped. It is low rated by the average critics but there's reviews calling this a genuinely great experience, which again makes me think of all those underappreciated japanese games (that later become cult classics) from 15-20 years ago. Also, for example one of the first games I played on the PS3 I had for a year was Siren Blood Curse. And to this day it might be one of the most memorable games I've played on it alongside Demons' Souls. It was janky and honestly a mess more often than not, but it still stuck with me to this day how cool aspects of it were.

Thank you so much for the review! As a pretty big fan of the creator's previous games, I've been keeping an eye on this title for a while. After looking up several reviews and looking at the price point, I decided that I will get the game later at a slightly higher sale and/or after some fixes (if they do fix some of the jank). Any other year and I probably would've bought it day one, but this year is really crazy with the game releases and I had to be more picky with my purchases 😅. The game kinda reminds me of Ghostwire Tokyo. I bought that game day one, and while it's not that great or anything, I really love the game and in fact do come back to it every now and then to just walk around the ingame world while listening to the musics.
My man, don't allow the internet narrative to sway your opinion on Ghostwire, that game is so damn good! 😊 Slitterhead has some similarities, but they are incredibly different at the end of the day. Ghostwire is leagues better than Slitterhead, but I really enjoy it all the same. The negative reviews are totally valid though, slitterhead is like a proof of concept but I do hope it's a financial success because Bokeh have some great minds on their staff and I'd love to see them grow and make more fleshed out games.
This game plays nothing like Ghostwire Tokyo. Maybe there's a bit of similaritiy in the overall setting, I guess. GT is a masterpiece, Slitterhead is a wasted potential, imo.
Posessing NPCs was done in an old, experimental PC game called "Omikron: the Nomad Soul." The game pretty much required a walkthrough for me, and the gameplay itself was... mixed. Still, if you want to check out a unique title from the past during the next dry season between big game drops... I suggest this. Definitely unique!
Nice to see someone else who played Omikron! I played the hell out of that for many years, can walk around Jaunpur blindfolded! May give this a go, soul hopping is indeed a rare concept these days.
Another stealth section in a non-stealth game that sucks ? Shocking. I really wish devs would stop adding that. I understand AAA open worlds doing it, since it's a tick on their "broadest appeal possible" checklist, but this game is obviously pretty niche in comparison
It's a spiritual successor to Siren, Siren is a stealth game. For what it's worth, the stealth in Slitterhead is easy as hell, and there's a generous checkpoint system. You'd have to go out of your way to fail a stealth section. They are honestly that simple. It's almost embarrassing how simple they are, lol.
@@jankmedia1985 Stealth in Siren made sense because you couldn't fight the enemies with any profency. But this is an action game where you dispatch a lot of enemies.
This game gives you the feeling of a Cult Classic because Cult Classics are games that tend to be experimental, and experimental games rarely receive the budget of a AAA game, only AA and below, which ends up explaining the lack of polish. However, I prefer to pay $30-50 for games that are not very polished but bring me a new experience, than to pay $60 for a generic experience that I have already consumed hundreds of times. I understand that the price is high, but that is because today's game consumer market - which is mostly made up of casual gamers - is more demanding today than in the past, and rarely spends money or pays attention to games that have below 8 on metacritic, which makes it difficult for these more experimental games to pay for themselves through the number of copies sold, and it is necessary to charge more for each copy. And don't get me wrong, being picky about games isn't a bad thing, however it has consequences on the industry by encouraging it to be more conservative and less experimental, as experimenting involves taking risks that the project won't be as polished as traditional experiences - as the workforce is spent trying to create something new rather than improving what already exists - which can result in low popularity of the product which leads to losses in the number of sales.
I'm not too far, only done 2 missions after getting Alex. I'm terrible at games so even on easy I'm struggling a little bit lol One note I think you missed a little bit, though you did touch on it, is that if you're a fan of Siren I think you'll enjoy this game a lot. Considering this is by the same guy, you can clearly see the influences and some mechanics were taken directly from that game. This is his brand new studio, all his own, so he don't have to appease any higher ups, so he's able to flex his own creativity. There's pros and cons to that, but it gave him a chance to revisit some of his earlier ideas and I think fans of his earlier work like Siren will greatly appreciate that while newcomers might be a bit more put off. I can definitely feel the jank you mentioned. It's not a complete deal breaker, but it still hurts. The amount of time I failed jumping between buildings or falling when trying to reach a higher ledge is borderline infuriating and that's where I personally felt the jank the most. Movement feels a bit too stiff. Also, my brain sees the blue indicator and automatically tries to deflect despite the fact I know I should focus on timing. I wish the indicator would appear when the timing window for deflections opens and not seconds before it. The story so far is pretty easy to follow and I'm intrigued and want to see more, but I can see how it can become convoluted pretty quickly. Overall, I love this guy and his work and want to see Bokeh Studio succeed, so I hope they keep pushing themselves and improving. Thanks for the review!
I kinda wish Julee was the sole protagonist of this game, that was fleshed out far more throughout the game, instead of having loads of playable characters.
Don't sleep on Edo, his quick dash is awesome. Anita is the best IMO, her being able to summon NPCs and then have them attack the enemy can make some boss fights an absolute cakewalk.
I am going to get this game and your reviews and ACG are transparent and honest. I wish devs started taking risks more than worry about subscriptions, GAS and live service games.
A few things they could have done to make this game much much more enjoyable would be: - NPC reactions to the horrifying stuff going on around them instead of just taking the monstrous abuse. - Character models from the year 2014 or later. - Full VO at least for the “rarities” and conversation sequences if nothing else. - Make locking and blocking separate mechanics… - Slitterheads shouldn’t stop and wait patiently for you in chase sequences. Grow the balls to do what you clearly wanted to do with these segments. - Find a better way for more human characters to appear than just phasing them in. It breaks any sense of immersion and just immediately gives a 2005 arcade game feeling. - Remove the stealth segments entirely.
Personally I am really glad giving the game 2nd chance, it definitely has instant classic Vibe not just for the sake of mechanics novelty, I think many elements in this game also work well like Kowloon city atmosphere and Akira Yamaoka music. Too bad that plot gets convoluted quite fast since I quite enjoyed the premise and some characters moments. Budget replacement of voice acting on random grunting did not work well for narrative either. Not going even to touch jank aspect of fights and stealth, but I mildly enjoyed stage exploration even though they are repeating those stages again and again with just a bit different flavour. Anyway, always on point review, Mort, thanks for 100%

It’s only similar in the sense that sightjacking exists, and you play missions over timelines. The sightjacking is rarely useful, not like siren at all. In fact you don’t ever really need to use it, it feels like it’s just there to make Siren fans giggle. It’s a totally vestigial mechanic in this game.

Still, it is commendable that it strives to be original in a time where nothing is (at least not with this budget). Still giving a like, comment and all that RUclips jazz for the culture. May you wander in wisdom Mort.
I am a sucker for creative games like this. Bought it as soon as it became available. Really tried to like it, but in the end I have mixed feelings about it. This is basically "Possession - The Game". This is all you do 90% of the time. The thing is, it never really goes beyond just a gimmick. The gameplay never evolves, never changes, all you do is posses someone hit the monster, possess the next one, hit the monster...and that's about it. You throw in some special abilities from rarities here and there too, and that's all there is to it. The battles are chaotic enough to prevent any real strategy to be implied. Just posses the next guy and go on. At one point I was asking myself is it gonna be that much different if you played with just one character with more health hitting the monster than using 10 characters with very little health hitting the monster. Isn't it the later just the first one with extra steps? Game is also insanely repetitive due to the never evolving gameplay. Once you fight your first slitherhead you've essentially experienced everything the game has to offer. Have fun doing the exact same thing for 15 more hours! All in all, I praise the creativity, but really wish the game was more mechanically deep and its main gimmick more meaningful.
Great review, i bet the combat is clunky because the task to make every NPC in a game playable and move like Dante in Devil May Cry is damn near impossible even for giant teams with enormous budget. And for that premise the animations are great in my opinion, every encounter a work of art, be it clunky in control and movement.
Looking into the dev diaries and finding out the devs had a shoestring budget makes so much sense. For most people, $50 is way, way too expensive but for me. I am okay with giving a bit more money to a studio that has some ideas and is inspired like Bokeh rather than give my money to the constant slop released in the mainstream. Keep the middle market alive!
Same, $50 is too much but I look at it like an investment. They gotta be able to keep the lights on. The gaming world needs studios like Bokeh. I even got the deluxe and might double dip for the physical deluxe.
I'm deeply confused that developers keep putting forced stealth segments in games. Audience distaste for them is a meme at this point, is there some segment of the game buying public clamoring for clunky sneaking in action games?
Wow so this isn't like a Veilguard thing new UE5 games are just waaaay to shiny this gen. Need sunglasses just to boot. Like why is the lock on literally just a burning pixel of light? UI design is hard yo.
I believe it was made by a Japanese studio but it takes place in a fictional version of Kowloon Walled City in China, my friend and I were joking that the Alex character feels like he was ripped straight out of a manhwa lmao
these naming conventions are somewhat annoying me, it is like "you are todoroki of the iga clan, you have become a shinigami to fight the mystical evil yokai known as "evil bad-bads"" like wtf, had these evil spirits a semester abroad in europe and now they want to be called by their english name? but thats just me
As a long term gamer i am 68 its obvious by certain things like in combat the area is closed off, most games now do not have to do that or it is a lot bigger so they ether have budget programers or just a limited amount of money to invest so they have used a lot of shortcuts. the game looks realy good but i hate it when its not given the chance by janky controls. aparently no one wanted to do it so he ended up with DIY devs and resouces, considering that it came out realy well. this realy could have been something but contary to the hope it will be a cult classic i think i will just fade awy to nothing. but i hope i am wroung as games like this deserve a chance.
From the looks of it, the major downside is since you be playing many normal looking people, it doesn't look cool. I mean why would I want to play as a 50 yo. grandma? It'd cool if after you level up some, you can creat this blood armor. So when you possess new humans, you still have visual cues on how much "you" have grown.
I want to love this game so bad.. i really do. But certain things about this game truly pisses me off.. the biggest thing is the fact that it is CONSTANTLY stopping you to read dialogue.. its 2024, why is there next to zero dialogue in this game?
This is really good example of fantastic novel idea with not so great execution, which seems to be a trend with AA games, but hey still better than DA Veilguard!
But I think that's why AA games deserve some slack. They're often more willing to try something new, and regardless if the game is a little rough, that's cool with me. I'll take interesting and flawed over smooth and bland any day of the week.
I don't get the "jank" and "rough around the edges" people are talking about? Can you give clear examples? Going through the game I noticed there are a only a handful of missing textures when going into possession mode. The camera system suffers because this third person hack and slash style with arenas doesn't match Kowloon city for a gameplay thing. They did as well as any one would do, maybe the camera can go behind the walls and they turn transparent but it's really minor. The controls and combat are fine, lock on system can be improved though. The story is hard to follow, but that's all of KT's story ideas from SH1. This one is a step above Siren since every iteration of the loop the spirit learns how to change the timeline to get further along in progression until he finally breaks out. I still don't fully get it(will need to replay it again) but it's really interesting twist on the time loop idea.

also:
-invincibility while recovering from a knockback
-if they wanna make me explore a section for a new character, mark where the map ends
Almost all of these are:
"have a bigger budget".
Alas
"Make locking and blocking separate mechanics…"

I was hoping it was a big hit. Everything's intriguing but the execution.
Firm but fair. Nice review.
Bravo.
Are you going to play/review Stalker 2?
Probably, but since Stalker 2 is a much bigger game it will take a while.
Yeah I will, not expecting a review copy though, so it'll take me a bit
The game's graphics and artsyle reminds me of vtm Bloodlines
I didn't know new horror games existed. I thought they threw in the towel a decade ago and just remaking them all now.
i need more old games
❤
This reminds me of Parasyte. Think I heard somewhere this is going to come out on Gamepass.
damn, makes me wish he woulda just made another siren game with proper focus.
Watch the anime Parasyte pretty much similar premise without the time travel and spirit possession.
welcome to kowloon
WOW.
Going back for achievements is a notable feature, I feel.
Am I wrong here?
It's janky but still plays as well as one of the Siren games on the PS2 so I was already sold just on that alone!
Slitterhead RUclips Jazz 🎶
Its like driver san fran
We found a millennial! Luvd that game nice memory unlock 👍
I haven't watched Mimic in years.
Yo prefiero dar mi dinero a los juegos que me divierten, independientemente de la compañía.
Gronk!
Like a modern day Messiah great body swapping concept mixed with mad janky design
I think for me, it being $50 is kind of a stretch. I mean I wouldn’t mind buying it if Ik for sure I’ll be able to replay it
Did people just forget or not know about the parasite anime?
Thanks for the video. 8:30 that's a nope. Forced stealth is bad gameplay. Onward to 400k. All glory to the algorithm.
I'm deeply confused that developers keep putting forced stealth segments in games. Audience distaste for them is a meme at this point, is there some segment of the game buying public clamoring for clunky sneaking in action games?
Eh, I like them well enough. It's like having puzzles in a game: some like them, and some don't.
Wow so this isn't like a Veilguard thing new UE5 games are just waaaay to shiny this gen. Need sunglasses just to boot.
Like why is the lock on literally just a burning pixel of light?
UI design is hard yo.
Omg yeah jank is exactly what I feel looking at the gameplay... And sadly it's not the good kinda jank.
The sad thing is, the game is $20 cheaper than the average physical release these days.
I’m assuming by the look of this game that it is Korean? I don’t think I have ever seen a Korean game with a cohesive story lol
I believe it was made by a Japanese studio but it takes place in a fictional version of Kowloon Walled City in China, my friend and I were joking that the Alex character feels like he was ripped straight out of a manhwa lmao
free comment because i don't need a reason.
these naming conventions are somewhat annoying me, it is like "you are todoroki of the iga clan, you have become a shinigami to fight the mystical evil yokai known as "evil bad-bads"" like wtf, had these evil spirits a semester abroad in europe and now they want to be called by their english name? but thats just me
The monster designs are really cool i think
Looks like a fun ps3 game XD
It reminds me of Messiah, which was also an interesting idea but mediocre execution.
Great Review,
Mort Could you review Caves of Qud ?
Greetings from Hong Kong
Not sure yet, I'm pretty bogged down as it is
With how janky this game is, we have to remember that this is a new IP and studio.
in Philipines its 20 bucks right now
Parasyte the game
This is the first (and last) game by this new company.
Wow, this game got nonfanfare at release.
Yessssss
Why are you bringing up a completely unrelated game from a different genre? Other than to stir up drama because you disagree with his take on one game
But I think that's why AA games deserve some slack. They're often more willing to try something new, and regardless if the game is a little rough, that's cool with me. I'll take interesting and flawed over smooth and bland any day of the week.
Its a one n done for me.. uninstalled as soon as i finished it.
Such a shame this didn't work out. I love the concept but if the story doesn't hold up, it's not going to be for me.
I think I'll pass on this
I don't get the "jank" and "rough around the edges" people are talking about?
