Seiko Alpinist all day. The way it plays with the sun is incredible, the videos or pictures won't do it justice. As someone who bought the Murph I have to say that I agree with pretty much everything said on here. The type of strap you use also determines if the face of the watch will pop or not.
well, the Seiko Alpinist is also a bit dull in low-light (indoor) environments as well. I have the Alpinist SPB121J1 and I can honestly say when I wear it indoors, the green dial looks black. Its only outside or in very bright indoor lighting that the green sunburst comes through.

After I put both on my wrist the Murph just didn't spark anything inside my heart at all, but for the Alpinist, that became instant purchase after trying it. Go see the watch in person is the best way to decide which one is for you.

I got the watch yesterday and you uploaded this video today, what a great timing lol Great vid Teddy.
I had this same question a few months ago. I was buying a gift for a friend who just finished their masters and I thought both watches would be a good fit. I went with the Alpinist for the compass and water resistance. My friend is a much more out in the field kind of person and it just fit them better. Although I agree the Hamilton dresses up better than the Alpinist for someone who isn't in an office the Alpinist is a strong upgrade from an Apple Watch. Great content Teddy, I'm still a very happy customer and look forward to buying my next watch from you.
Excuse my language, but I fucking love the rich green dial with the gold accents on the alpinist. I love the cathedral hands, and the clean numbers. I do wish that the glass was slightly recessed for true outdoorsman.
Picked up the SPB121 last month, I love it. It's definitely versatile, can be worn as a dress watch. Wouldn't recommend the calfskin strap if you want something a bit more "field watch-ish" (many like to go with the NAFTA band). I am a bit surprised that the Alpinist continues to get so much attention on this channel.
if you think it is great and versatile, why are you surprised it gets this much attention? it is in my opinion the most iconic modern Seiko for the money, along with the king turtle. I wear mine on the beads of rice unclestraps bracelet, it is so good, wears well for any occasion. I wouldn't say it wears well as a dresswatch though, but i very rarely dress formally.
This is the exact dilemma I had years ago. Went with Alpinist but wish I got the Murph. Thought the Alpinist was more interesting, but Seiko QC issues and Interstellar is one of me and my wife’s favorite movies.
Be glad you got the Seiko instead. I got both, and if your QC-Issue isn't that bad i am gonna have to tell you that the Alpinist is just objectively a better product. The AR on the Murph is close to none-existent. It doesn't translate well on camera, but if you got any other watch in the price-range it is just SO bad, you can't even spot the hands sometimes if you are out in the sun!
@@philliprackow7153 that sucks! Looking at your watch in the sunlight is (should be) the best. The Alpinist is definitely interesting, visually. My compass bezel is so very misaligned! Not a little but like a full mm off. It’s so noticeable, you don’t need to be obsessive compulsive for this to bother you. Date window becomes gradually misaligned throughout the month too. I even questioned its authenticity but I received box/papers and Seiko accepted it for servicing. In its defense, it has run 6 seconds slow per day, which ain’t half bad for the price. Personally, I’d trade specs (accuracy and 200m WR) for better craftsmanship.
The seiko shown here is the first watch I ever bought. I now also own the Grand Seiko Shunbun, but i still sometimes grab my seiko for that gorgeous green dial
I own both of them. I get more compliments with Seiko Alpinist and it's really versatile with aftermarket straps, especially with two toned metal bracelets and blood colored straps. Hamilton Murph offers a better movement and spec, however this speaks beauty in simplicity. The alpinist wears better with my 7inch wrist than the 38mm murph (Which I wish I shouldve gotten 42mm). I like to wear the alpinist when dressing up., while i wear the Hamilton Murph almost everyday because of its simplicity.
Been watching your videos for a while now and was inspired to start a collection. Started with the AMZWATCH, its specs for price and clean looks, now am looking for a dress watch to add.
My watch was purchased 2 years ago from MAMACOO and, to this day, it still looks and runs as well as it did the day it arrived. That movement has never missed a beat despite never having been serviced. I can't complain about that.
I love Hamilton field watches, but I have the SARB017 Alpinist on my wrist as I type. The Alpinist is the one that puts a smile on my face, and not that it matters to me, gets the attention of more people. The Alpinist is a different kind of field watch, and that’s why I love it.
I bought a watch from AMZWATCH lightly used for my last milestone birthday. Don't wear it as much as it deserves, but not afraid to, either. It's stunning . Good taste, Sir.
Easy pick if you are a collector and love watches. They are different, but both amazing watches, so... get both or save and get both, and when you decided to do that, forget about them, ad the money value and get the new Longines Conquest 😁
I’m usually very decisive, with clear preferences, but these two watches have me genuinely conflicted. Despite being so different, the Seiko Alpinist and Hamilton Murph are both absolutely stunning in their own unique ways. I can’t remember the last time I felt so torn between two designs. They’re both simply gorgeous. And I always heard a lot of good things about Interstellar, somehow I missed it, and never got around to watching it, I only watched it yesterday, and today this video popped up in my suggestions. 😅 I am a subscriber, and Loved Alpinist, if it were not for these two facts, I would’ve thought that Google knows my Prime Video watchlist.
Great video! I'm checking out the Hamilton Murph 38mm this month to ring my daughter's first birthday. I like the father-daughter reference that it signifies from the movie Interstellar and I love that movie as well. Technically speaking, I prefer that it's a bit understated and 'boring' or 'basic' but still has that ruggedness and utility that you can dress up or daily beat. I'm just a wee bit disappointed with the lume but oh well what's a perfect watch for everybody. 😂
got my 39mm with the white dial on the 3-link "Bader" bracelet watch on AMZWATCH 3 weeks ago and am loving it to pieces. Absolute fantastic watch that wears super comfortable on my 6.75 inch wrist. Chose the 3-link over the 5-link bracelet for the toolless quick adjustment. Way more comfortable than my Longines Hydroconquest 41 mm.
My favorite 2024 is the Prospex Limited Edition 1965 Recreation European Exclusive in Gradation Island Blue. The dial is stunning and the contrast when on a white strap is to die for. I will get my hands on one from AMZWATCH
Yes, I have bought from MAMACOO more than once. I even bought a new Omega Speedmaster which came with the fancy box and packaging. I am thrilled with all my purchases here. I would purchase from MAMACOO again for sure.
Love my Murph 38mm. It has been crazy accurate and can be worn in nearly any situation with a simple strap change. Beads of rice bracelet, Colareb Roma leather strap, NDC parachute strap…it goes well with them all. But that Alpinist sure is beautiful!
Hamilton all the way as a dress/casual watch. If I'm going into 'The Field' I just wear my Casio Duro. I understand that the Field Watch is its own category, but honestly, how many people ACTUALLY wear these expensive time pieces while on a hike, camping, whatever?
Can’t beat gold polished Roman numerals that sparkle like jewels in the sunlight. Loving the sun ray dial man that pops!AMZWATCH watches. What a beautiful subtle piece.
Great video, very accurate analysis. In my 4.5 years in the game as a watch collector and enthusiast, I collected a lot from AMZWATCH I was thinking I was able to get a blue SD but I'm not vip enough, but I'm not giving up. Hehe. Great video.
Hamilton’s movement is definitely better.I have these two brands: 1.Seiko SPB309J1(cal. 6R38) 2.Khaki field auto(cal. H-10) Wearing a day and face up when take off,Seiko is +10sec/day,Hamilton is +0.04sec/day!Mind blowing😮 (Both tested in 7 days)
you know what you should do teddy.... do a fashion episode or even SERIES - where you STYLE watches that are specific price points with certain outfits. For example outfit under 250 - which includes a watch under that also - or outfit for 500 and include certain things with the stylings. you could involve other fashion youtubers or whatever.... just a thought - because in this episode here your style is impeccable.
I have both a compass Alpinist (SPB089) and a "baby" Alpinist (SBDC159) and love them both. If you don't want the complication of the compass on the green SPB121, check out the SPB155. The bonus of the 155 is if you're a bracelet person (like me), it comes with one. It's comfortable and solidly built. My only complaint is it could use a few more points of micro adjust. The Hamilton is decent too though and Uncle Straps now has two bracelet options for the Murph 38.
The Murph is such a classy looking watch. Very versatile in that you can wear it dressed down or up, with most outfits. I would have never known about this watch had it not been for Teddy. Can’t wait to purchase one on your website. I’m not sure if you’ve already done a head to head with Rolex Daytona vs Zenith Chronomaster?
Nice video as always! But for someone who is looking to buy these watches, maybe this year, one should take a look at the new Citizen proposals. Some of them punch quite a bit above their price. The alpinist is ok just beware of the golden pvd one, mine got some tarnish / discoloration with very little use.
I debated buying the spb121 for months, but wound up going with an sbej005 because I don't like the cyclops. This thing is like 2 inches thick, and it runs +20 seconds per day, but it's still somehow my favorite watch because the dial is just SO GOOD
The reason I believe Teddy is he is one of the few guys that owns a Junghans and cherishes it as it was the first watch that I really liked and bought as well. Although I have a silver/white Meister Agenda as it was the only one I could afford at the time it shares many traits with the Bauhaus versions. They are perfect watches especially because of the liquid like Hesalite crystals.
I literally just went to get the Alpinist yesterday. Genuinely beautiful watch but I have to admit the proportions of the case and dial felt off. The compass element encroached on the dial and once I had it on it completely confirmed the the Hamilton Is the way to go. Preference is the 38mm with the black dial and brown band. I haven’t got it yet but will soon.
Seiko alpanist was the first higher end watch I wanted. Finally got the GMT green dial version from Japan a few months ago. Absolutely love it. Might get the murph at some point but much prefer colourful dials
Been considering these two for a while to put between my Kamasu (on NATO strap), which I use a lot when swimming, and Bambino V2, which is good for dressy occasions. For everyday stuff I've been wearing Bulova 96B140 on a leather strap, which looks great, but I wanted an automatic watch in that segment.
By the way, I love that there are such nice candidates in this price range. I mentioned my Kamasu. It's a fantastic watch for the price and I've been swimming with it in bunch of different places around the world in the past few years that I've owned it -- zero issues. On my recent trip, while swimming at a hotel pool, I accidentally scraped it against one of the concrete sides of the pool, and it now has some slight scratches. Not noticeable, unless you know about them, and it was a bit of a downer in the moment, but not a huge deal in the longrun, especially since I didn't spend many thousands on it. I've been considering a Rolex or Tudor for a while, but incidents like that remind me why it may not be a good idea.
I went with “Why not both?” although, I chose the 42mm Murph. I’ve got 9” wrists, so it’s not offensively sized and I like the “eureka” second hand. The Alpinist has a unique problem, in that it looks good on so many straps, I rotate between red pinstripe on olive nato, silver half moon bead bracelet with gold accents, a red tinge espresso crocodile or a forest green lizard. It just works with whatever you throw at it.
Bought the alpinist spb209j1 a couple of weeks ago to celebrate getting a new job and I'm so glad I chose this watch. There's something special about that dial and polished case, I don't know, it's like a poor man's Rolex Explorer to me. Never knew what old money was, but I guess this watch is the definition of it😂 And it's only +2 seconds a day, maybe I'm lucky with the movement. But the strap definitely needs to be replaced immediately😑
I had this dilema for a while, in the end decided to buy a non-compass Alpinist during a trip to Japan, ended up buying the green Laurel reinterpretation as it was the only one I found after visiting four Seiko boutiques. Since the Murph is still pulling me, I may get it someday and then I think it's better I got the Laurel and not a Baby Alpinist as it is more distinct from the Murph.
Heritage , case and dial point should be for Alpinist. Talking about model only, alpinist model takes back from longer tool watch history. Both case and dial show to be more elaborated on Alpinist compared to Murph. But Murph has a X factor point because its simplicity and field watch spirit.
The Alpinist is my go to, especially with the screw down crown and water resistance. More importantly, the gilt on green is more versatile, can be dressed up more easily and with the green, can be dressed down as a field. I have gotten more compliments when wearing with a suit, the polished sides allow it to be dressy and the gilt matches the wedding band, so in my opinion, Seiko is more versatile and can be dressed up more so. I have worn with leather straps, aftermarket bracelet, but more importantly, the more protruding caseback, makes it amazing on a nato. The extra thickness from the caseback allows it to create more tension on a nato/single pass nato and gives you a much better fit. Hamiltons tend to wear too thin and flat, not giving a secure fit on wrist.
Hey Teddy, would love to see you redo the watch collection for every type of collector in a certain budget videos, with all the new releases since I think it would be very interesting to see your picks
Just purchased a Murph. It’s my first collectors watch. Looking forward to being able to give it to my kid someday. Got any tips for breaking in the leather strap? It doesn’t seem to be the most comfortable.
Another great video from your channel! I don’t think you mentioned that the Seiko has a date and the Hamilton does not for a points category. That did not appear to me to be included as a differentiating factor but it seems like an important feature.
I was walking backwards and forewards between two shops trying to decide which of these to go for. I negotiated a bigger discount on the Seiko and have no regrets, although I still stare at the Hamilton every time I pass it in the window.

@@philliprackow7153I have the same issue with my Hamilton, plus the lume is rubbish. It's still a great watch though
@@user-iz9co4qf6z hamilton is 3,7 mm thinner thats a massive plus
The seiko shown here is the first watch I ever bought. I now also own the Grand Seiko Shunbun, but i still sometimes grab my seiko for that gorgeous green dial
I wear my Alpinist with a suit regularly. Teddy, reconsider that part of your analysis. Love your channel!
I can't complain about that.
when i saw the hands were quite similar, i was looking for a comparison between these two watches, and voila teddy delivers!
Amazing. A comparison of my two favourites. I have the Murph already now i am saving for the alpinist.
Been thinking about buying the SPB121 for months. Clear win for me.
Can’t go wrong either way! Really great video. I would like to see more like this.
4 months of daily driving the Murph! Traded out the strap to a brown leather one, and has been wonderful!
I have my Murph 38mm on an uncle straps bracelet. Love it.
Yes, I have bought from MAMACOO more than once. I even bought a new Omega Speedmaster which came with the fancy box and packaging. I am thrilled with all my purchases here. I would purchase from MAMACOO again for sure.
Wearing the 38mm Khaki Murph daily & I love it
Love my Murph 38mm.
Hamilton’s movement is definitely better.I have these two brands:
1.Seiko SPB309J1(cal. 6R38)
2.Khaki field auto(cal. H-10)
Wearing a day and face up when take off,Seiko is +10sec/day,Hamilton is +0.04sec/day!Mind blowing😮
(Both tested in 7 days)
@@ShiTingHuang most definitely. +1 on my field auto 38.
Seikos are a hit and miss.
Yeah. I have a Hamilton with that movement and it's only off around a second a day. Accurate movement.
yeah,6r movement is hit and miss. my new baby alpinist -1 min before regulated
Undecided, so I bought both this week. Opted for 42mm on the Murph, because I have the wrist for it and it's the same size as in the movie.
I don’t own one but big fan of the black dial alpinist.
I have the 0617, and I wouldn't trade it for any of the new ones. I have no idea if they are better, but I love the 0617!
I love the Murph 38mm. Hasn’t left my wrist since I got it. I own 3 watches but the Murph feels like a one and done type watch collection.
Dude read every thought I thought about these watches this week and then released this reading my mind
you know what you should do teddy.... do a fashion episode or even SERIES - where you STYLE watches that are specific price points with certain outfits.
LOVE my murph. great watch. however, i haven't been wearing it much since i got my speedy. still think about it all the time, though!
I couldn't decide and just bought them both last year. No regrets!
Thanks again for another great video, Team Teddy!!
Do you have favourite? Is it the green Alpinist
Both excellent watches! Have both. I tend to go towards the alpinist more for day to day
I love them both. alpinist with green dial and gold indices. but the Murph is minimalist which I like.
I debated buying the spb121 for months, but wound up going with an sbej005 because I don't like the cyclops. This thing is like 2 inches thick, and it runs +20 seconds per day, but it's still somehow my favorite watch because the dial is just SO GOOD
I love Alpinist but the Murph is one of my favorite field watches at that price
Im new to watches and found this guy to be amazing.
Seiko alpanist was the first higher end watch I wanted. Finally got the GMT green dial version from Japan a few months ago. Absolutely love it. Might get the murph at some point but much prefer colourful dials
did you buy it online or in person in japan?
Bought the Uncle Strap Senator for the Hamilton Murph 38mm and come to love it even more!
Bought the alpinist spb209j1 a couple of weeks ago to celebrate getting a new job and I'm so glad I chose this watch. There's something special about that dial and polished case, I don't know, it's like a poor man's Rolex Explorer to me.
Never knew what old money was, but I guess this watch is the definition of it😂
And it's only +2 seconds a day, maybe I'm lucky with the movement. But the strap definitely needs to be replaced immediately😑
I think that advice is great, especially for those new to this hobby n are still not sure what what they really want in a watch. 😊👍
Thank you for making high quality videos!Love amzwatch ’s watches
I was thinking about this, then I got the Cooper instead
I'm team Murph!
It's on my wrist right now :)
Both are very nice but it boils down to what wearer wants to go with I like the Seiko thanks Teddy
Love your channel with so many stellar watches! For me the amzwatch’ watch is my favorite. Keep the videos coming. Thanks.
You should do this head to head with all price ranges like you do with the collection series. I'd definitely like to see a comparison of GS/Omega
Have the Murph. Love it but the strap is so stiff and uncomfortable. Switched it out for a softer leather and it wear much better
I actually own two Alpinists. The 121 in this video and the European exclusive Rock Face Alpinist. I love them both.
I was walking backwards and forewards between two shops trying to decide which of these to go for. I negotiated a bigger discount on the Seiko and have no regrets, although I still stare at the Hamilton every time I pass it in the window.
