Watch some videos of Saroj Khan teaching a step, next minute Madhuri does that step and you’re like O_O what just happened, that same step went from being some ordinary bust jhatka to this celebration of human soul through the body!!?? I don’t think even she knows what it is in her that makes her so enchanting as a dancer. I have tried watching the “Dance with Madhuri” videos that she hosts and it doesn’t seem like that quality is something SHE can even put her finger to, let alone teach. Having tried all ways to break it down to something technical and failing till date, I must say she makes me appreciate what ‘gifted’ might mean. There can be many people like me, who get introduced to dance very early and can combine that with an ability to break everything down to a science. And a lot can be achieved through practice and hardwork. Hrithik Roshan is a good example of that. But Madhuri is worlds apart. She is seriously Unparalleled. Only a few songs are worth the mention where she was well matched with respect to her dancing ability : 1) Dance of Envy with Karisma 2) Que Sera Sera with Prabhdeva and 3) Dola re with Aishwarya (to some extent). Its not just that she dances, but HOW she dances. You will find hundreds of people trying to imitate her moves to the T, including facial expressions, costume, mudras, how she holds her toes, etc, but the end result is just not that magical.
You may have heard people say that the magic of Madhuri lies in how effortless she makes dancing look. The best description of what her dancing looks like to my mind is this:
When you see the best of the dancers, including yes Prabhudeva, Sridevi, Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Shakira- at best it seems like their body is responding to their soul- which is HUGE, and very few even get to that level. When Madhuri dances it looks like her body forgot it is there and you only see her soul.
I can watch one of her song performances twenty four times (I counted) and I cannot bring myself to focus on “the steps” because I become completely enchanted by the effortlessness of the movement ALL OVER. On one hand it feels like you don’t want to look past her face because it is the most visible window to that soul but then the corner of your eye is telling you that something very fluid is also happening in the body area, but when you try to take your eye to the body it just wants to keep absorbing the whole.
I could get into how her mechanics are so perfect, like how she always has perfect control of her center (the belly button) (e.g. ke sara sara, or anytime she is in Nritya mode really), or how her hands make the softest mudras with so much clarity and definition (e.g. jagaave saari raina, humari atariya, devdas songs), how her ada is so flawless but all of that would not even scratch the surface of the real reason she is to me the best dancer that might have ever existed. Watch some videos of Saroj Khan teaching a step, next minute Madhuri does that step and you’re like O_O what just happened, that same step went from being some ordinary bust jhatka to this celebration of human soul through the body!!??
I don’t think even she knows what it is in her that makes her so enchanting as a dancer. I have tried watching the “Dance with Madhuri” videos that she hosts and it doesn’t seem like that quality is something SHE can even put her finger to, let alone teach.
Having tried all ways to break it down to something technical and failing till date, I must say she makes me appreciate what ‘gifted’ might mean. There can be many people like me, who get introduced to dance very early and can combine that with an ability to break everything down to a science. And a lot can be achieved through practice and hardwork. Hrithik Roshan is a good example of that. But Madhuri is worlds apart. She is seriously Unparalleled. There is not a second dancer in the world that I have seen who can repeat whatever that x factor is.
