Wow! I am down! This could start with restaurants, move into school, emergency services like the Red Cross to bring food to places where fresh food can not get to. This is very unique and I love it.
Wow. It only took forty years for hydroponics to gain traction.
I know right! Way more efficient.
Not this type of hydroponics. Post optimisation the business case gets interesting. Think linear scaling in a controlled environment setup in a distributed manner across communities. Once you have food security, it opens possibilities for specialisation
Good to see that people are wanting to use hydroponics outside of uses in space. I wouldn't mind have access to my food regularly, it will grow better, and taste better.
Very cool. Thanks for making this episode.
great video, I love it when The Verge does cool pieces on revolutionary stuff like this!
yeap this video inspired a random Malaysian like me to start plant-os.com and now we are working with Caleb and team in OpenAG.
amazing! would have loved a longer version of the video
Lots of potential in this.
I really like this kind of videos.
This looks like a cool project. I would love to know more.
Panasonic & Fujitsu came up with same thing except that story was featured on the WSJ.
It would be great that The Verge release more videos like this and stop trying to make famous the people that work there. And also more of this instead of the teasers, or advertisement videos.
I think it may break down a plants natural defense over generations of plants
hopefully this will gain traction. vertical farming/hydroponics is the future for sure. look at those massive buildings in NYC, if 90% of a skyscrapers usable square footage was devoted to food production, complete with water recycling systems and a distribution level on the bottom what would that look like?
no need for genetic modifications, no need for seasonality, no need for pesticides, no waste of resources, no degradation of nutrients, next to no carbon footprint. maybe the future will be bright after all.
thanks check out plant-os.com. We need ML and IOT engineers. We currently have a team of 20 spread across the globe working on this open source project.
That's a lot of electricity. Only problem I can see is the amount of electricity it takes to power the lights on a mass scale. Good idea though
If they use LEDs then it's not all that awful.
Thezftw But it's an unnecessary cost. Traditional farms get that resource for free, it's called the sun.
pixelbat You have to use a lot of water though. Mist minimizes water use. Hell, they're recycling the water. Their facility could use solar energy for the lights too, or at least, other facilities could.
If this can somehow usurp Monsanto, I'm all for it.
What about space alone? A huge farm would be dozens if not hundreds of office buildings worth of space. Seems like there are a lot of logistics issues for mass production. If this is being floated more as a home grown farm thing where you just make the amount of food you need in your home, that would be more realistic I think.
Yes, the waiting is over!!
So cool!
What happened to the wonder product food replacement Soylent?
Ive always imagine having large warehouse like building housing farms in floors instead of the traditional way, maybe im not that far off?
Yay! New detour!
I wonder what the future hold for this industry. What about livestock and Animal products. What are they limited to grow? Awesome video.
Thats great!
Definitely the future.... City farms will be a requirement.
People have been asking for the name of the intro song for over a year now. Just put it on your SoundCloud or give us the name of the producer, please!
I would like to know the answer to this question as well @The_Verge
Bringing technology to our food with open sourced data. I'm game!
I like. I'll visit.
This looks really interesting, I'd love to visit a lab!
Where's the high times version?
so where are data? and how to bulid this sensors ?
Wow i want to own a farm like this! Do they have a website?? Please let me know!
Interesting.
This would probably be super successful in Sweden
Where is ep 2?
I wish I could do this for a living
Brilliant ... How do I sign up?
@plant_os
now i know what to do with all those parking lots within the cities once self driving cars took over.
I hope this actually happens
Henry Dunn it's happening
as long as it is organic seeds I'm all good
What does Monsanto say?
Hearing this guy reminds me of Jimmy Kimmel's More Men Talking Like Valley Girls
song? :o
WHERE IS THIS IS MY NEXT
Without the VERGECAST and MOBILE SHOW my life is mentally (and sexually) deprived. Goodnight.

Seems cost prohibited... Farm land is cheap and plentiful. How much would it cost to transfer a 50 acre farm into warehouse space. Also constant UV lights and systems to fuel this method of agriculture can't be cheap. Traditional farmers get those resources for free...
Creating the most efficient way of growing quality produce. Yes the initial CAPEX is high but as a company both plantOS and Fenome are looking into reducing the barriers of entry by investing in creating open source environmental sensors. I see your line of reasoning but I hope you can test us out before ruling this out.
just make more twinky's ya dingus
this is threatening for conventional farmers in developing countries, particularly in south east asia...
we are based in Malaysia and can serve every continent except South America(we need help!)
how do you become that smart ?
1:26 that's such an American thing WAR..... Everything has to end up in them bullying other countries |
Cool idea with many obvious implications. But you'll have to test it against the organic products to check nutrient levels and taste. Lab grown food tastes like shit by all accounts!
What is this just Hydroponics. Very Misleading title!

GO VEGAN!
Yeah wait until Monsanto comes to check out their work, then these guys will find themselves being checked into a ditch. Where + how does photosynthesis fall into place here? How many nanobots will be integrated into this crap? Something smells fishy,,,,
I like. I'll visit.
