Moto Myth Busting The Smog System
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 апр 2020
- Confused by the internet mechanics who spin all kinds of fanciful tails about the smog systems on your EXC, FE, XCF-W and FEs bikes?!
Let’s break that shizz down.
Note that the 12-16 EXC and FE bikes have the SAS system and the charcoal tank is a round canister under the fuel tank on the right side of the motor. XCF-W’s have neither of these systems.
The 17-19 EXC and FE bikes have both systems and the vapor canister is a long thin tank in the frame above the exhaust header under the triple clamp.
The 20+ EXC, XCF-W, FE and FEs bikes all have the vapor system with in frame storage tank but do not have the SAS pumps.

Damn this dude knows a lot.
Thanks mate. We work hard to be the best in the biz
Once again a thorough explanation and needed myth busting. Impressed with your knowledge and ability to share in understandable terms.
Hands down the most comprehensive rundown of the modern euro smog system on the entirety of the interwebs.
Great video Mike! A ton of great myth busting and good, solid information all rolled into one. Excellent job!
Great to hear an educated view of and information about these systems. Information is power. Keep up the good work 💪🏽
They don’t want to take another excellent informational video what would people do without you great job
I really like the way you explain and de-myth those systems thanks a lot not only it help me knowing morebut also give me real arguments for friends that dont get how it works and want more power and be lighter without knowledge
Your a pro!!.. im like 10 min into it. Learned a lot so far. Just picked up a 21 FE350s...Going to start watching all your content! Excellent job, Thanks Mike!
This channel is awesome!
This is the no 1 channel for dirtbikes/engines. Trust me I subscribe all of them
Such great info. Thanks Mike!
Good show with lots of pertinent information!
Great info Mike, as always
Man I love your videos keep watching them over and over lol. I hope to get me a ktm 500 before long and when I do I will be ordering some parts from you guys. 👍💯❤️
Solid Mike, great job. Thank you
Great explanations. Thanks for posting.
I love the fact that you tell us that it is against the law to remove any of the smog control components. Then you continue on with a good explanation of how all the systems work and why they are installed. Finally, you give us every reason to remove ALL of the systems. Thanks!! I wouldn't want to break federal law......UNLESS .....I have a good reason, like a potential failure part when I'm riding somewhere in the deep woods.
And remember, "these are suggestions that I have heard guys use" so do this at your own risk. That is why I have an entire smog system sitting on the table in front of me.......
Guy is just giving you information to make your own choice
Interesting how the stock fuel cap marble can fail considering the manufacturer recommends tipping the bike on its side to fill the oil filter cavity part-way during an oil change. Thanks for sharing this information, I learned a lot from this video!
Mike- Thank you for the straight up dissertation regarding the smog program. You have earned another loyal customer from your honest, highly knowledgeable, and timely clips. !!! (I stripped all the parts off my bike yesterday , not knowing precisely how everything functioned).
A question : Whats the best way to get the canister out ? remove the nipples, then pipe , and slide it out the bottom?
Yep. Some guys need to cut it into sections to get it all out. Can be a real pita
Thanks.... Im weighing pia/ and coolant catch benefits out before i dive into that one! once again , thanks for your time , appreciated.
You, are a GENIOUS. What an honor.
Excellent vid left my 2017 500 alone as I said before the average ride can’t ride it to its full potential in stock trim. It about smooth track able power
Very good info, thanks !
Your video’s are the best of its kind that I’ve seen. Q: can I leave my reeds in but add fmf and vortex on my 2021 fe? Or would that cause problems.
thanks for the info helps a tone!
Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge. My best source for non bull shit info. for mods to my KTM 500 Exc
Hard rule...if it doesn't detract from performance or reliability, it's coming off. If it enhances one or both, it's definitely coming off.
Exatly why have it on there anyways like wtf
Lol and it look ugly
@@broughttoideas the treehuggers… that’s why
Nice lesson. I love learning about this stuff....my assumption has been incorrect. Subscribed.
More great info', thanks!
Very informative, thanks
Great video! 🤘🏻
Great video Mike. One thing though .. regarding the coolant overflow. at 17:32, the plug goes on the LEFT side. The intake off the right radiator goes to the bottom (once radiator cools it will suck overflow back through the hose) and the overflow is on the right.
Right you are! Thanks for clarifying my incorrect info on that🤘🏽👌🏽
To add the coolant recovery tank, does a new part need to be added or is this the stock part that is from the vapor recovery system?
@@stanmah diff part. on tacomoto.co type in "coolant recovery". it's the KTM hard parts one. swap it. tacomoto.co/products/ktm-hard-parts-coolant-recovery-bottle.
I swapped it on my 18 FE501. was easy, except for the fact that the bottom fitting I was melting the tube. I got a 90-degree vacuum fitting @ AutoZone I use instead there, because it cna h andle the heat of the header.
Does an aftermarket ecu, like the GET still account for and operate the vapor recovery system? Thanks again for a real explanations and available options.
On my 2017 500 I tried blocking the air intake on the pulse injector and still got popping so I removed it and plugged the hole. No more annoying deceleration popping. I left the evap system on but added a votex ecu.
Nice info.
Good job!
Dude you are mint thanks buddy 💪2019 500 exc 2019 450 Sox days braaaap🤘
amazing info
Excellent video and thorough explanations on all!!! Learned a lot. And subbed up for future videos. Thank you for your work!!!!🖤❤️🖤❤️🖤
Great video. Thx. If i were to remove the reeds and the smog system, would i need to change the stock ecu? Thx😊
Great video Mike. Sorry for the years late comment but I am a new rider but an old man…lol. I have a 2024 husky FE 350W, the dealer offered to take all this off, including the reed pedal in the air intake box. The muffler cap is severely restricted from factory. Is it possible for them to change the muffler cap and leave the reed pedal? I don’t want the bike to become super anarchy, just better breathing and sound. Thanks in adv, I really appreciate your videos, very good explanation especially for new riders like myself. .also, do you have to leave the reed pedal aspiratior in if you take out the one from the air box?
Got a how to video showing the conversion of the vapor recovery to coolant overflow?
Removed all that fuel vapor crap on my 2020 XCFW500 that I bought with 22 hours. Trucking it home (el. 150ft.) after first ride to 5000 ft., the fuel tank was sucked in. A subsequent ride resulted in high pressure in the tank at elevation.
Any chance you can show that black canister installed in the bike frame as a reservoir?
The reason reeds can fail on a 4 stroke is due to the random backfire we get at low RPM and fast throttle change.. my reeds got de-seated from it's port in the airbox at only 5hrs, 70 miles on the ODO. 2 Strokes dont usually backfire, so they dont get this shock load. But yes, when I removed them since they were loose, I noticed a loss of low end power. However, since this engine has so much low end torque and feels like it kinda falls off stock.. removing these may move more power up top and make it more controllable off idle. Maybe.
Great video Mike. For reliability, I plan on removing the vapor recovery system on my 2021 KTM 500EXC-F and installing your Smog delete kit. Will there be any effect with the operation of the stock ECU, pro or con?
No issues with that at all.
What's the thread pitch and size for the block off bolt ?
Solid video! Just removed my vapor canister from my 2022 KTM 500 EXCF. I had to cut it with an oscillating tool to get it out so it would clear the engine as it came down. Hopefully the coolant reservoir will go up in without removing the engine (part shows up tomorrow)
Did it!? Haha.
@@CumminsTurbo4 yes the reservoir fit up in easier than the canister came out!
@@hockinmatt awesome thank you!
Hey I haven't looked at the coolant cap of the father in laws 2022 or any bikes really.... are caps for bikes like the 501 excf dual valve like a cars rad cap?
If so... I'd suggest using you evaporator can as an overflow reseviour.
Run the overflow hose to the bottom port of the evaporator can. Plug one of the top ports and filter the other.
This way when the bike is cooling it will vacuum the over flown coolant back into the bike.
Courtesy of a backyard mechanic 😉
How does the evap system allow air into the fuel tank to replace the volume of fuel that goes out of the tank?
I am normally a “ I don’t want to hear the labor pains, just show me the baby “ person. Although in this case it was nice to hear the logic behind these mods.
On the reeds , I also remember the 82 xr 500 I believe it was.
I get what you're saying about reversion with a big cam but I was thinking it was more about noise on the new street legal ktm s as its not on the sx bikes and some of them have even bigger cams ?
Agree. I removed mine yesterday in my new 23 501s.
The bike was gutless before thay and baffle removal. Nows it's an animal in all ranges
Absolutely love your videos Mike.....could you go into more detail on why taking the reeds out on a supermoto set up with a 500 will help performance..... And would it be detrimental when I went back to off-road dirt
L Beck reeds out will improve airflow above 45% throttle or so. If that’s where you ride then yank.
@@TACOMOTOCO Great vids. If reeds are out on my 2020 fe501s, and the mini screen at the very end of the stock end cap (stock exhaust) is gone, should I get the EJK tuner to compensate for this? Can the tuner help me regain the lost low end grunt due to removal of reeds, or would the EJK be just for engine safety at this point? How can it help me? Thanks!
@@shaynemackey3614 yes and yes
@@TACOMOTOCO I will be ordering shortly, and you have gained a customer for life. You are amazing, thanks.
Hey Mike. I had the brass spigot break off, as you said hapens. I put some yamabond over it and it seemed to run into the snapped of bit. I feel like the yamabond may have made it's way through the bolt. Is this something I should be worried about?
All good. No issues
What about running the reeds in with a Vortex ECU? Aren't the Vortex ECU's mapped to run with the reeds out?
Yes. With the stock vortex mapping that’s true. You can have them custom tuned to run with reeds. Few guys go that route and just run the maps w the reeds out
Just bought a 2022 350 exc.. Looks like I can do this .. No problem in Ga.
is the ktm hardparts bottle in a stock 2015 500 exc ?
USA and Canadian bikes as well. Thanks for the explanaion.
what about euro bikes ? 250 exc f 2018 for example
Might be a dumb question but would one need to use a fire resistant air filter or add a screen mesh in the airbox if you remove the reeds?
That was a thing w carb bikes but not w the FI machines
Is an adjustment needed to run Vortex map #1 and reeds in? PMB end cap installed. Thanks!
We like 4 4 4 w that set up
Appreciate you my friend. Q...Certain mod specialists have notable success with installing a velocity tube once removing the reeds thru that area. This apparently gives back bottom end response...do you agree or sell such an item??
Do the 2 strokes have the air injection great channel you have a new scriber
Thanks mate.
No, this is a 4 stroke thing only
Great video Mike. 17 Fe501, Vortex with SAS, reeds removed, Arko with arrester in place.. I left the canister system in place(nice when bike sits in the dining room) your video makes me wonder- does the Vortex still control the solenoid valve like the stock ECU did or does it not have the system programed at all. If it's not operating I'll remove it.
The GET and Vortex no longer control that system so proceed as you see best for your bike.
@@TACOMOTOCO thank you!
Hey Taco do you know if the 2014 and the 2016 are the same ecu ive been looking for a GET ecu and can only find it for the 2016
We have the GET for your bike. Yes, 12-16 are the same power train and ecu🤘🏽
Thanks for posting and very good explanation! Can you tell me what the stock HP is for 2020 500 xcf-w ?
We haven’t run that bike on the dyno yet but the EXCF made 43. XCF-W will probably be around 44-45, possibly 46
Thanks
What do you suggest i do to my 2020 500exc-f to fix the flame out issue? Is there anything simple I can do?
Air and fuel. She’s hungry to eat and breath.
I have a 21 500 exc 6 day it does not have that exhaust reed off the right side of the head What bike are you talking about
Chevron was just over turned so those laws just went out the window
Damn, seems like I’ve swallowed & regurgitated a lot of misinformation about this bike. Thank you for setting me straight.. I’m 90% dirt & single track riding so I’m going to put that reed system back in next week & see how it feels.
stevebaum let’s hear back on that
@@TACOMOTOCO Interesting because I took mine out too for fear of them breaking off and getting sucked in. But my bike has a weird pulse on off throttle at 2nd gearish low speed. Upped the room seemed to help. But I think I chucked mine. Probably $100 to buy again. Let us know of any difference in low speed performance.
Mike, is there a trick to get the reed block back in smoothly? My first try felt like I was tryin’ to a ten gallon head into a five gallon hat.. Just wouldn’t fit. I’m going to give it another go tomorrow, but I have concerns I’ll damage it &/or smear the yamabond 4 all over the air box.
I have blocked this AIS system and engine runs smoother as part as I can tell. Less popping as well. BTW is it true that "dirt" from that charcoal canister be sucked into tank in some circumstances?
Yessss the air injection system is horrible… I blocked mine the first week
No that’s not a thing
For the life of me i don’t see the sas system, at 3:29 of your video, on my 2024 excf 350. I looked exactly where you say and i just don’t see it. Am i blind😂
Brilliant video thank you so much. Best ive seen. I learned so much shit lol
I took the intake reed out of my '19 KTM 450 exc-f six day and now it is stalling at low rpm's. Any suggestions?
Turn up the idle.
Then choose a fuel correction option.
JD tuner
Power commander
Vortex ecu
GET ecu
All great choices
Do those bikes need to pass smog checks?
Hi can u help I have ktm sxf 250cc 2012 kick start it starts up but dies after 15 sec or if u give it gas it dies fuel pump good pressure good changed new ECU Done valves just can’t get why it stars easy but dies give bit gas it bogs and dies I’m stuck plz help if u can heard u guys are best
How much weight can be shaved down if you were to remove this KTM system??
Remove it for reliability not for weight. Between 1-2 lbs
So it cools the exhaust ? Well we put heat tape on the exhaust to keep heat in it raze the temp 500 to 700 degrees and put that hot air out faster to make more HP.

The SAS broke at the threaded entry on the cylinder head on my ride....2016 500exc six days, waiting on a replacement right now....
Waiting on a replacement what?
@@TACOMOTOCO Oh hey, lol, had to order the whole sas part# to get the threaded piece i needed. Couldn't see how it may have broke though.
Surprised you’re not just looking to plug and delete it 🤷🏼♀️
@@TACOMOTOCO True, but it's a street legal ride, been using it for mini adventure riding here in VA
Copy. Maintain street legality 👌🏽🤘🏽
Mike, good video with good information.
But just so you know the SAS systems on all U.S. street legal bikes were created to dilute the hydrocarbons with fresh air to below 1ppm THC. That is directly from a friend of mine who used to work for CARB (environmental engineer) back in the 90's-2005.
Then the manufacturers decided it's too much work to build different bikes for every market. Hence why they are all 50 states legal. Even Canada got screwed on that one because they are part of the European Union... Which means there bikes should be European Spec.
Geo White Same thing with the ‘new’ venturi tips on tailpipes... mix fresh air into the exhaust to dilute the emissions
@@jbrunner63 Correct...
Hi, to the best of my knowledge, our bikes in Canada are the same as the USA. We have all the same EPA mandadted stuff on our bikes as you do in the States and our dealers are bound by the same KTM rules about altering the bikes.
Canada is not apart of the EU in anyway shape or form. The bikes sold in North America are the same.
Damn, what will we do without all the pull the smog = hp posts?
Who knows what all the keyboard mechanics will claim as moto bible truth now?!
I now proudly have, a degree from KTM College!
Do the non USA bikes have reeds in intake? If not why do we have them in usa?
So great to hear an educated explanation of these systems and how they perform. Most RUclips videos on the emissions systems are just "YeeHaw!! Rip that sumbitch OUT!!"
Do you consider best dual sport bikes an Internet Mechanic???
I’m a mechanic and in the internet so I think that might apply to me as well🤷🏼♀️
Well that was a political answer! Lol Not to start anything I believe you guys are both great but there is definitely some conflicting opinions there about the reeds
