I've had the pleasure of extensively riding in two BMW i8s and these are very impressive cars. Yeah, the engine sound is partially fake, but aside from that the 3-cylinder turbo is very impressive from a refinement point of view. When the driver slams the pedal the engine response also appears to be instantaneous and you are forcibly pushed deep into the hard leather seats. Those 3-cylinder turbo engines are more refined than the naturally aspirated 4-cylinder gasoline engine in my 2007 BMW 118i!
This is absolutely true. Penske Auto Group was offering an employee discount to the tune of $500 a month leases on these, which is about as much as a 5 series lease usually STARTS at. I see these all around the Penske dealerships in San Diego when I get my car serviced, usually driven by finance managers and general managers.
This might be a very sought after collector's car someday. A lot of classic cars that command big money today were not appreciated when they were first sold as new. Plymouth SuperBird, Ford Thunderbolt, etc.

The main thing is it’s a pluggable hybrid. Makes a lot of sense to be able to run on electricity 85% of the time but have that petrol engine in there when you need to suddenly do long distances or emergencies. Even long ranged Teslas can get in the trouble. BMWs pluggable hybrids are the best whether i3 or i8. .
I always believed the i8 should’ve been a full time EV with a small diesel gas turbine motor that operates as a recharging source for the batteries. It should’ve been an AWD EV with more powerful electric motors that would’ve bridged the Grand Tourer and Supercar classes of vehicles - GT accommodation and Supercar performance. The 3 cylinder turbo petrol hybrid configuration was a mistake, but, it looks great!
They do look amazing on the road. Ive seen one with tasteful aftermarket wheels and big tires with white lettering in NYC and nothing else on the road looked like it. I looks very cool and looks like the future. driving next to it for 20 minutes i noticed all other cars looked plain and outdated compared to it. Not saying its good or bad but it has an amazing futuristic look.
In the UK the car, an almost new one, sells for around £80k when the list is around £115k. The value of a four year old i8 is around 45K with milage commensurate with normal use. The depreciation from £80k to £45K is normal, but dreadful when viewed from the artificial price of £115k , Incredibly relaible , probably one of the nicest looking car from the side but muddled from the back and acceptable from the front. Interior lacks any drama, but being a 2 + 2 is handy. The doors require the same distance between another car than any other car - often having to fold in other people door mirrors to allow the door to open fully. Aside from depreciation the running costs are very modest - servicing of which 2 were required in the 45K miles I did cost less than £600 in total. Tyres will last around 12,000 to 15,000 miles and whilst narrow are an unusual size which makes them around £275 each for the back and circa £225 for the fronts. Fuel consumption is in the late 30's and if plugged in at night and modest length journeys and overall 43-48 mpg is achievable. No RFL and insurance costs not excessive No faults aside from a problem with the fuel cap cover. At around the £45k to £50k for a three to four year old car, worthy of ownership for a couple of years.
emark24 Germans 'engineer' their shit in Germany. As opposed to everyone else, they produce vehicles in Serbia, Slovenia etc. They pay their product dirt cheap, and because od a name they charge double the reasonable price. Watch them burn in their own making. Been staying away from German products as far as I can remember. Another myth, busted.

I bought an i8 Roadster, as well. Do you think the Roadster will be a collectible? The Z8's value is through the roof, and the Roadster is rarer than the Z8.
It’s the lightest production hybrid in the world so it can be tuned to corner very well by choosing different wheels. It’s comparable to the e46 m3 coupé: same weight, ~same power, but acceleration is higher
I know there is no comparison but buy a Volt. Bigger engine, bigger interior, bigger battery, out the door new fully loaded for 30-40 grand less than a used i8.
Tyler D. It's sad that engines aren't even efficient enough to be useful for simple windshield wipers. They can't even keep up with basic alternating current electric motors, so how do they expect to even keep up with switched reluctance motors? Engines have no place in modern times. They're like horses. Weak, inefficient, smelly, noisy, and slow.
Tyler D. You do a 30k Tesla can beat Lamborghinis the fact that the Teslas did it actually got a lot of companies switching over to electric motors by 2020 most of the compact economic cars are gonna be electric
The i8 styling is Space: 1999 weird and very 'of the moment' BMW claimed it was "SOLD OUT' and yet every dealer seems to have at least two, and the rumours persist that they are stacking to the ceiling in Port Hueneme, CA. The e31 8 Series, in contrast is classic Italian-influenced style. 30 years after introduction, it remains beautiful.
Robert P I take that back. you’re right he could have been dumber and actually bought it But he is smarter then that at least. Since the split his views have consistently gone down like an anchor while Parker’s well, you’ve seen his house, cars, adrev etc
DaRealCarlos \ In the EU, BMW is just a family car, only in the states, they think they are Sports Cars! Tom Cruise hahahaha!!!!!!! Mustang level Car? Name one US car that does the same job?
Hey genius, the car Tom Cruise drove in the movie was a concept car, not this production i8. Relax And in the USA, people use the BMW for the same everyday "job" as in europe. No one thinks an average BMW is a sports car. calm down
Ur right the fun value is not the 0-60 it's in driving something wild and untamed. This is why 80s supercars excel. Something steampunk as opposed to refined the animal out of it.
Hoovie, In regards to the reliability of the i8, there are some things that need to be said. In short, the less EV miles and the less charging done, the the more mechanical problems will occur. The 1.5l, 3 cylinder turbo sharts out some 230-ish horsepower, and the i8's engine would wear out quite quickly with misuse. As it happens, there's a large portion of i8 owners (douches who like and/or are Connor McGregor) don't charge up their cars and ruin the looks with shit paint wraps. They treat them like toys and so they can rasp the engine at every turning moment for the addictive ''exhaust'' noise. That's fucking bad, because not only aren't they not getting the most potential power with a full battery, the engine would be forced to charge the batteries, power the electric motors and drive the car through the transmission all by itself. So as a *Top Buying Tip*, if you get a look at an i8s mpg average; if it's in the 20s - expect problems. If it's in the 40s go for it. In the +80? Then it's hardly been worn in.

Unforgiven One whoever puts an LS swapped i8 on RUclips first will see some *hilarious* comments.
Just wait 50k for the turbo to bite the bust and about 80k for the emotor to die and it will be done!
Actually that would be kinda cool once the depreciation tanks.
I am not sure I agree. The i8 is not depreciating any faster than another BMW or any luxury sports car for that matter. It is more the sticker shock. It was expensive to begin with but if you look at the Tesla, it too have a depreciation curve that is eye opening.
Literally what he said in the video
So... you agree

" and you are forcibly pushed deep into the hard leather seats." 😂 Are we still talking about the beamer?
Haha, yeah. :D
It accelerates very rapidly. The leather seats are too hard for my tastes.
Cant wait to pick one up for 50k next year
Zarif Ayman in thinking 40k and I might think about it. Honestly though I still don't think it's pull the trigger even at 40k

Plymouth SuperBird, Ford Thunderbolt, etc.

please depreciate faster cuz momma needs one of those
These are the kinds of videos that we like Hoovie.
Oof, it’s a 3 cylinder not a 4 cylinder bro
The main thing is it’s a pluggable hybrid. Makes a lot of sense to be able to run on electricity 85% of the time but have that petrol engine in there when you need to suddenly do long distances or emergencies. Even long ranged Teslas can get in the trouble. BMWs pluggable hybrids are the best whether i3 or i8.
.
It's called the i8 so it should have an inline 8.
*Angry Buick noises*

It's Depreciating Rapidly for no f**king reason
It's a BMW. Are you honestly suprised the value is dropping like a rock? All German cars do after the warranty is out

Germans 'engineer' their shit in Germany. As opposed to everyone else, they produce vehicles in Serbia, Slovenia etc. They pay their product dirt cheap, and because od a name they charge double the reasonable price. Watch them burn in their own making. Been staying away from German products as far as I can remember. Another myth, busted.

hm okay, here where i live, i pay 7000 € for a 105hp diesel a3, guess gtis are very cheap in your region
Flobbi gtis go for around 5k average in my area. I got very lucky to get a broken one and fixed it up so it could pass smog. I just hope one of these channels boosts the value of them like they did to the mustang gt= jumped 3k the past year and the 350z that also jumped a few thousand.
There about 10k in Australia. Which is pretty cheap for what you got in your country
In 15 years we may see LS swaps into these, which would actually be pretty wicked, especially with TT or a supercharger.

I bought an i8 Roadster, as well. Do you think the Roadster will be a collectible? The Z8's value is through the roof, and the Roadster is rarer than the Z8.
i have one too. They made 5700+ Z8's. They made just under 3900 i8's. It will dip into the 50's in 2027 or so, and then start to rise again. imho
Hoovies garage most definitely swagged out with the i8 I see you

It’s the lightest production hybrid in the world so it can be tuned to corner very well by choosing different wheels. It’s comparable to the e46 m3 coupé: same weight, ~same power, but acceleration is higher
I plan to buy one and import it to México , that car is beautiful
Get me one toooo😭
I know there is no comparison but buy a Volt. Bigger engine, bigger interior, bigger battery, out the door new fully loaded for 30-40 grand less than a used i8.
This car needs a 500hp engine.
Black Knight - GAMING Should have had a straight 6 twin turbo with 450bhp THEN stick the electric motors on.
Heard rumors they're gonna double the power soon. Then they'll be worth it. As is these things should've never been over 80k
This car needs to get rid of the engine and put some real electric motors on it.
I really appreciate your honesty.

Mustang level Car? Name one US car that does the same job?
lucas rem the same job as what BMW?
Hey genius, the car Tom Cruise drove in the movie was a concept car, not this production i8. Relax
And in the USA, people use the BMW for the same everyday "job" as in europe. No one thinks an average BMW is a sports car. calm down
Rest easy, Jahseh Onfroy. 🖤
Makes sense tho have the looks and styling of a hyper car but not having the engine problems / specific gas issues I’d buy one 🤔
Ur right the fun value is not the 0-60 it's in driving something wild and untamed. This is why 80s supercars excel. Something steampunk as opposed to refined the animal out of it.
Hoovie,
In regards to the reliability of the i8, there are some things that need to be said.
