- An exploration of ocean plastic, avatars and adaptive bottom feeders. The musical!
Also an experiment in pre-rendered graphics.
The name comes from a box of miscellaneous plastic objects my child has. Things that are not categorically blocks or figurines or anything describable. I referred to them as "gonks", which was pronounced by my then-2-year-old as “donks". This film was me making my own set of donks, and building silly things out of them.
Made by myself over 16 months, at WOMBOT @wombotstudio (a new studio, which is me and my wife, in our garage)

Donks
(Triondarkonus)
Donks are creatures that was discovered a few months ago, and scientists are baffled of what they are capable of.
Appearances
Donks do not posses its real form, as it covers itself in trash and garbage, somewhat related to some crab species, snails, or no-shelled organisms. Without anything covering, they posses a black form with sparkling color changing eyes, specifically two, and has the ability to change its size, mass, shape, and amount of appendeges.
Using the trash to its advantage, it is able to use them to make entirely different forms, seemingly able to change properties of objects
Properties
Donks has a very strange property, where they can go inside a Donk, and able to control it completely, and able to attach and connect objects, and able to make it float, and use it with any functions.
Ex.
A boot can be used as a nose + mouth, and the Donk now has the ability to speak and smell. Donks can seemingly change functions and capabilities, and these objects can serve as protection for these Donks.
Location
Underneath a certain ocean through a almost watertight hole where trash can go in, but not out. This might mean the end of the Donks species since if any water leaks out, they will not be specialized to then breathe underwater, meaning they are under (litterally) an excinctional threat if the water breaks through.
woooww!
Dont forget they constantly fight for other parts for no reason just to be perfect

@@user-ik6dg9uk3u I believe it's about personalities on the internet. (Think of people who spend hours every day on Twitter.) Initially, you have no form, but once you start to adopt aspects of a personality, people can see you. The video starts in the early Internet days, where people had simple online personalities that were mostly experimental, but over time the creation of personalities becomes more deliberate and complex, until we get to the end with the massive conglomerate beeing cheered on by a hoard of nearly identical people. The submarine guy is anybody not part of online spaces looking in
For this one, I think it's about rampant consumerism and pollution. We keep buying shiny new things and then casually throwing them away once we're bored of them, and it all gets thrown out like some garbage - even though these things still have plenty of potential.

The scene starting at 5:06 where the donks strip the submarine down to its bones is super reminiscent of those timelapse videos of starfish and other sea floor scavengers going after whale falls and stuff. Those sequences always felt so eerie to me, they're a natural example of exactly the type of surreal horror this channel does so perfectly
It's reminiscent because it's meant to be. In the description, felix says "adaptive bottom feeders."
The eye rolling back freaked me out
It's called "whalefall" when a whale dies and sinks to the bottom to be eaten by scavengers which is just such a perfect and badass name for it in my opinion.
It's like one of those timelapses of ants eating food or something.
@@walrusArmageddon Yeah, that, and the way the donks were just tearing the submarine apart right before that. I keep coming back to that part of the video and it never gets any less creepy
ive been watching and rewatching this as well as other videos by colgrave for many weeks now, and like the many other fever dream creations of colgrave, it's so immersive and filled with emotion, yet so simple and goofy. colgrave's videos are a form of abstract art-wacky nonsense at first glance, but they illustrate such beautiful worlds that are windows to this mad man's mind.
This should be required viewing for all animators. There's so much more going on than just interesting visuals; this is a master class in character movement. Every creature moves so uniquely and expressively, amplified by astounding audio work. I'm gonna be coming back to this for a long time.
My guess is that the Donks, being mostly formless creatures that live at the bottom of the ocean, need to make bodies to inhabit. They would probably use stuff like shells and bones normally, but the waste produced by the society living on ground provides something better; trash that is thrown away into the ocean by the tons. The Donks are infinitely creative and can use the trash to make any kind of body they please, allowing each of them to be unique. However, they fight over materials because they all want the best stuff and can't seem to settle on any one form, and are even willing to strip a dead submerwhale (what I'm calling the submerine creature) to its bones of its metal. However, they are also able to work together to make something even better than what they can alone, by combining their resources and creativity. When one seems to be having trouble picking out just the right face and sings about it's plight, other Donks gather materials and help it build a towering form that amazes everyone else. It's expression doesn't change, but it's singing and enthusiastic clapping indicates it's quite happy with the results.
The Donks themselves, which are the amorphic black creatures with glowing eyes, are weirdly cute in their own strange, eldritch kind of way. Though the submerwhale didn't seem to agree!
That's a good one!
Which is probably how they made the giant guy at 4:08.
lovely interpretation!
Hmmm I personally disagree with the final thoughts - I really think the guy at 4:08 is really in discomfort, that's what the imagery and music feels to me at least (the screams in agony and the fact that his expression is sad and the spikes on its head are constantly hurting him). I think he was the only one to be kind of fed up with everything at 3:20 and he ended up being merged with all the other stuff against his will. For me the two creatures at 3:36 represent two big businesses / networks, like Facebook and Instagram, that end up being bought and merged (like when Facebook bought Instagram) and end up creating the giant creature at 4:01, which is a representation of capitalism itself (its feet are the ones of the two previous creatures!).
The appearance of the outsider submarine is to me the idea of alternative ideas that don't want to be part of this extreme capitalistic consumerism, but that eventually even they end up being trapped and consumed by capitalism itself - this is a very negative view, like there's no way to avoid and or escape it :/
I'm not trying to generalise 'capitalism' as capitalism = bad, but I really think this specific type of capitalism (the post-capitalism, extreme consumerism one) is not good for us. Even the giant creature looks like a DNA, like it's telling us it's part of us now.
What are your thoughts?

The way the sound of the submarine backing up calls back to the establishing shot at the beginning of the scene and then twists it into something so MENACING!! Genuine shivers
I got unsettled by it dying slowly while it is alive
I feel like for me it's the fact that none of the Donk creatures are acting as systems anymore, each individual piece is just devouring the whalemarine as fast as possible. The short depicts them as being very prideful and competitive (mushroom vs snail), but when actual food is available, it all goes by the wayside.
It might be the lower framerate and decreased inbetweens of the critters. It either brings up the connection to maggots sped up or the quick jolts of spider legs

After a few watches, it seems like the whole idea of the animation is that these creatures who once never had a voice, nor even a visible body, were actually given the chance to take on personalities of their own through these mounds of plastic, and by the end, are actually able to reach for bigger prey as well. Really cool idea that was executed perfectly, as always. Super enjoyable to watch!
I think it's just an outlet for felix to process the absurdity of prey-predator relationship: here we are in this globular object suspended in space, we dismantle each other and incorporate each others parts in our own bodies to grow and sustain ourselves.
if you look into his other work, you can see this motif of predation everywhere.

@@bahayesilyurt9433 I agree. I saw some critique of so-called late stage capitalism as well. The two who start facing off with an attitude of "it's you or me", piling hoards of material on their backs with no regard for the intended purpose of the pieces, then charging at each other while a crowd cheers them on as though it were a gladiatorial event. Also, these two creatures reassemble into one towering being with the legs twisting into a double helix implying natural selection; the creature reaching down and manually separating the strands seemed to imply that the direction things take is very much a conscious decision. In spite of all the destruction and horror the survival of the fittest approach has caused, the pig-nosed colossus seems to sing it's own praises to roaring approval. Moments later, everything is observed to be in ruin. Given that they're all constructed of useless plastic waste at the bottom of the ocean, I get the impression this is criticizing the assertion that the "free market" is a living thing that will ultimately make the best decisions and that governmental interference causes more problems than it solves. The recuperation of critical observation at the end was a nice touch.

As a sfx nerd I can admit Felix is a GENIUS of an artist in this area, he manages to create an ABSURDLY tension within so few seconds, that’s absurdly incredible
idk if english is your first language but the first « absurdly » should be « absurd amount of » instead to make more sense
@@commie_dog_boy what
@@4as2i they didn’t use absurdly properly
@@4everinthe4d you still know what they meant tho
@@BLHLF oh ik of course I was just clarifying
Astonishing work. I'm glad I'm supporting you on Patreon. Keep creating art :)
Cyriak would be an appreciator of this.
I want to see a collab between these channels
the sound designs scratch my brain in the best way possible
I love how the goofy sound effects at 2:44 transition into some pretty awesome music.
true
That's a bit goofy
@@stupidstinkymarker just a bit silly.
Goofy ah type beat
@@glowyogurt wat the dawg doin?
remember kids, don't overuse your character creator
otherwise all the extra parts will pollute the ocean and drift below the Marianna trench to be possessed by bottom feeders
This is such a cool animation! It definitely gives me Cyriak and Purble Place vibes, yet it has its own unique style and energy that makes it interesting in a different way.
Has anyone else noticed that the tune in this part: 4:50 is similar to the one that plays at the beginning of the video?: 0:40 i just think it's pretty interesting and really cool detail that i have not seen many people comment about
Yeah
Here's my idea of Donk physiology:
Donks normally appear as formless black creatures with many legs and glowing, color-changing eyes. They can only survive in one place: a dark, near-watertight cavern beneath the Omnipresent Ocean, where little light reaches. Donks are vulnerable to injury and attack due to their bodies being so soft and malleable, so they attempt to cover their bodies with a layer of protection. Due to the massive dumping of garbage and used avatar parts in the ocean above (which consequently float down into the Donk cavern), Donks have developed a dependency on the garbage, as there isn't much else to serve as protection. Depending on where a Donk makes its home can change its capabilities, such as improving its sense of sight or touch. Now, a single Donk is not very intelligent, but these creatures can link to each other mentally (and usually also physically) to create a hive-minded colony that acts like one organism. It is believed that the larger a Donk colony is, the more intelligent and self-aware it becomes. Interestingly, certain Donk colonies have different personalities, capabilities and traits depending on the Donks they are made out of.
I love this, Felix needs to make a biology book of all his creatures and this should be included
@@mayonnaisequeen1513 Thanks!
Thanx dude!
Thanks for explaining 😁
My head canon right here
All of Felix' animations have this energy thats similar to an old pixar short. When there was no pressure to be marketable, and the purpose of the animation was to explore how much they could accomplish with the medium. Everything he creates feels like an audiovisual playground
Feels even more on point after the latest animation, audiovisual playground is a solid eay to describe the experimental feel and style
Honestly or Paint3D animators since there’s no animate feature. They’re, like, hand doing every frame
@@TheLinposterIsSust😢❤❤❤❤
I know that's meant as a compliment, but I think this is far, far better than anything pixar has ever made.
Comparing Colegrove’s work to an “audiovisual playground” is one the best description I’ve seen, to be honest.
Second only to “an equalized hodgepodge of creativity and weirdness”.
Better than what Disney makes these days
Hermit crabs will sometimes use trash, like large bottle caps, as shells; they also frequently fight over shells; the creatures in the video are like advanced hermit crabs
I love how the people who caused the problem scoff at it, and then when it finally effects them that's when they start caring about what is going on. The fish eating a corpse timelapse was a great touch as well.
Reminds me to the news that scientists found a plastic bag in the Mariana trench and there surely is more after all this time
The ending scene actually occurd irl, it's a whale fall, and happens when a whale corpse sinks to the bottom of the sea to be picked clean by bottom feeders and such (also bone worms)
This is definitely gonna like one of those kinda animations everyone has watched in their childhood somewhere in the future I believe
I’m not so old that I don’t remember watching his earlier animations as a kid. I have simply kept following along. I hope more people are exposed to this art as time continues.
@@Numbabu you mean to tell me you haven't watched double king?? It's so cool I like the concept and it's what I remember most from him, like I literally just found out he made that
@@dr.random239 of course I did hehe. I have kept up. I have seen every video on this channel, since there aren’t too many. But I started with the ones that were posted like 9 years ago, and then coming back more recently I watched all the new stuff. And then rewatched it. Elephant’s garden and double king are top class, but I’m also very happy I was here day one for throat notes and now this one! I am a more active fan than I used to be and I intend to keep it that way.
@@Numbabu ohhh I see what you mean, yeah his animations have always been so good
This perfectly looks and feels like something I consumed as a kid.
I don't understand how your pipeline worked, but this was amazing.
Thanks for making it.
There simply is no drug that compares to Felix Colgrave.
These animations are just the purest form of imagination and I live for it
I was gonna say psychosis but yea. One in the same really If you squint enough
Animagination?
I love how they made the final bit at the end with the submarine so similar to how a whale carcass is eaten at the bottom of the sea floor.
Yeah it’s both terrifying and fascinating
Oooooooo it's also like watching a Temponaut Timelapse video
Whale fall
Yeah, but that whale was alive, and eaten alive
@@hilariousskullnamedcatzo647 yeah
Your animations are always soothing to me. The weirdness of them is actually my brain. A sense of childless and madness. Mixed with calm and purpose. Never would I think I’d find someone who can recreate my mind and it’s beautiful.
chaotic.
it got me even scared in the chase scenes necause of how sudden it was
