Truly an amazing animation, absolutely worth the time we waited.
What I love most about this is how it showcases digital animation. Digital animation often gets unfairly maligned when compared to classical animation. Here we can see the use of blur and distortion effects to beautifully accentuate many of the movements and actions, while colour math helps give the pond water a wonderful murky appearance. It's a composed and assembled so seamlessly to achieve visuals that conventional animation wouldn't be able to accompish. Also, you got to love the showcase of Australian wildlife. i think it's cool how the frogs' stars are generally 5-pointed when at rest, but the human's is 15-pointed. gives me the impression that it represents the more complex sounds of spoken language? idk
I like how the spider waits until sundown to release the frog, because that's when the stars come out in the sky. Maybe they could have found a new voice up there, instead of having to steal from someone else.
I thought they were going to eat the poor guy, but no, they were trying to be a gentleman and help the poor frog in its plight. Maybe the spiders had seen so many star voices stolen by the witch that it wanted to help the frog get a new one out of sympathy, so it tried to have it go to the stars at night to eat a new voice, which is why it waited till it was almost nighttime. What a kind spider.
Well not quite, it's just a symbiosis between the species. The frog helps to protect the spider's eggs and the spider protects the frog from harm. Somethings may want to mess with a frog but no one wants to mess with a hairy, eight-legged beastie the size of a dinnerplate
The spider switching between its wrists because it couldn't remember which one the watch was on is one tiny example of the amount of care Colgrave puts into these works. Thanks for another masterpiece which I will watch probably around twenty times.
he went all out with the spider joke. the fact that it, a, has a moustache, b, politely invited the frog to his house for a chat, and c, politely escorted him out and waved him goodbye, when there's a spider called a social huntsman in Australia is just genius. also the fact he kind of forgot where his watch was is another clever joke. These are the kinds of jokes you expect from Colgrave
also the fact that frogs and tarantulas can sometimes have symbiotic relationships, where the frog prevents insects from eating the tarantulas eggs and in return the tarantula protects the frog
Also the cat with the dead bird in its paws seems like it’s based off the huge feral cat population in Australia that is killing off a huge chunk of the natural wildlife and bird population.
As a bit of an animator myself... I am just totally AWE-struck by how magical this is, and how flawlessly every scene is put together... Only to be achieved by someone who has entirely devoted themselves to their craft. A true masterpiece.
As an Australian, this video is probably one of the most Australian things I’ve ever seen and it perfectly encapsulates the Australian experience. It has this sort of weird nostalgic feel for it that I can’t explain.
Watching a colgrave animation reminds me of being a kid when my dad took me to work the first time. All of a sudden I was in this new world. I saw things that I recognized, a stapler or a printer, but in this new context they were foreign, used in ways I didn't recognize. It's not that the office was chaotic, rather it had rules that were completely alien to me. I felt so small and out of place thrust into this strange machine. In a way, it was a lot like watching a lemur use the voice of a frog to make music.
It reminds me of childhood as well: because I learned to read early and spent good portion of my childhood reading myths and other folklore (the ethnographic type). I know their rules by heart, and Colgrave's animations follow it: some things in it may be new and modern, but the spirit, the rules of the world are older than writing and so, so familiar.
yea, especially if you pay attention to the scene where he switches hands to find his watch, and he aves good bye to the frog, who actually was holding a cup of tea when it was in that cabin with Spider, and they enjoyed some dead flies together!
A list of all the animal species I could ID for anyone whose curious (in order of appearance) (well over half of these animals are endangered btw) also there's a fuck tone so buckle up (edit, now updated list from the feedback in the replies and including timestamps!) statue of a man and his dog killing a Tasmanian tiger/thylacine (hunted to extinction) 0:15 - Green and Gold Frog (yes, creatively named)

I remember watching this video right when it came out. I was just intrigued but I didn’t know it would be something that I would come back to time and time again. Really really incredible and interesting work Felix. You’re a legend to me.

I really liked the part at 6:30 where the cat hears the 'cat star' and gets pissed off. Either its his star, and he stole another cats star to have a voice again, or he just doesnt like him taking cats voices.
@@lucasfraczek4320 It’s entirely possible that the Bushtail Possum took his voice, which makes him a lot more scary if he took something his size’s voice rather than small animals like the frog
2:51 is my favorite part of the whole thing, its just so fluid and full of character. For those who aren't Australian that's the sound our possums make at night too
Idk why I love the inclusion of real Australian animals like possums and thylacines and stuff mixed in with the other mystical made up animals or heavily fantasized versions of real animals, like as if they had always co-existed in some alternate world..
@@bananalegend Examples of made up ones are mostly insects, like the fancy one at the beginning, and the flower thing that beckons the fly, but they are mostly real, to my knowledge.
@@asti5052 Um.. Subs was probably made by Colgrave himself, because it's not "English (auto-generated)" and there is no credits for subtitle autor in description.

6:16 i love this tiny scene especially bc there's just so much going on the audience of native wildlife that appear out of nowhere. they have hands. some of the animals who dont have more than 2 feet get extra pair of hands bc clapping is a Vibe okay. the reveal of his mp4 collection. the cat who wasnt even in the audience shot cancelling him for voice stealing while eating the native wildlife, implying that the animal community is chill with murder but against voice stealing. the lowkey commentary on outdoor cats and invasive species. chef's kiss
The way he (main character) “swims” through the air…utterly “realistic”…somehow. This is brilliant. A perfect marriage of my love of animals - of all kinds, my love of music, and my immense appreciation of unique and extraordinary artistic talent. I’m simply blown away.
Felix Colgrave is my favorite animator on all of RUclips. His animations can be creepy, disorienting, beautiful, trippy, cryptic, and even slapstick hilarious all in one like in this. Always imaginative and always impressive.
it's almost hard to notice how it can support two cursors at once due to how natural it feels feels like double monitor setups, at first they sounded so extra and out of this world, but turns out it's very convenient for some users today, maybe a double mouse setup could become a trend in the near future
I keep coming back to this wonderful story and love letter to Tasmania's flora and fauna :-) You can tell that Felix Colgrave loves his home, extant and extinct, and how much it influences his art in the best of ways
@@lyndon4610 this has to be the millionth time I’ve had to look up the difference between opossums and possums because whoever names animals can’t be original
@@lyndon4610 oh wise one, knowledge keeper of mammals, lord of the scurry, I seek the answer to a question that has plagued me for so long; Are you actually supposed to not pronounce the O in Opossum? I've had contradicting answers
Despite how trippy this feels, I love how none of it is just 'random' and has all been very carefully thought out. All the characters have clear motivations that you can understand, and the world follows consistent rules.
Yes. His work or this type of work is often asociated with " someone on drugs did this ". I wonder how they could fathom that someone high could even begin to work on such a hard task and put it together coherently. It's insulting.
@@H0kram depends on what drug I've done dmt and have see similar dream scapes with sets of rules and consistency in a similar manner, and because of this specific type of substance not only was I completely conscious and not at all inebriated but I could remember everything that happened in great detail too could have easily turned it into a cool animation like this if I had the talent but we aren't all so lucky lol
Considering how the cat found that the possum was responsible for stealing everyone's voice, it feels like a setup for a sequel following the little voice thief getting away but losing the voices and trying to track them down one at a time
Oh, I didn't realise that's what the cat was yelling about. I just thought it was funny that the cat, while tearing out a lorikeet's throat, was pointing the finger at someone else
Not likely, if you take a look at 7:07 the sky is filled with falling voices. This could imply that the possum-like creature threw it all away or that the cat and the rest of the animal crew made the possum get rid of the voices.
I think that everyone knew what the voices were and how the Witch makes music. Cat only cared because everyone cares only about their kind: they despise who they eat and hate who eats them. Taking a voice from someone they feel empaty to, though! You filthy cruel criminal
1:21-1:24 this motion right here, i don't know enough about animation to know whether that is a complicated or time consuming shot to animate or very basic, all i know is that it looks smooth and impressive and very satisfying to watch.
The type of motion is tweening. Where you have a start point and an end point, and the computer fills in the rest with motion. It's VERY HARD to make look right and I say this shot was perfect.
Yes, a lot of this is about composition. even tho it’s a simple motion of him getting up, the perspective is extreme and warping and it’s very well done. Another similarly amazing bit is at 1:43
This is such a visual and auditory treat. Your style has gotten so refined and gorgeous.

This reminds me of the cinamini monster episode of chowder this was absolutely mesmerizing

I can't believe Casual Geographic saw a video like this and was able to gather what he did from it
I like how the spider waits until sundown to release the frog, because that's when the stars come out in the sky. Maybe they could have found a new voice up there, instead of having to steal from someone else.
That's... that's actually really deep.
nah mate, it was just because it was getting late
Well, He did end up taking the voice from the weirdly who likes poking frogs.
Love how the huntsman spider just brings the frog in for a cup of tea
Best part of an otherwise perfect video 😄😄😄
I thought they were going to eat the poor guy, but no, they were trying to be a gentleman and help the poor frog in its plight. Maybe the spiders had seen so many star voices stolen by the witch that it wanted to help the frog get a new one out of sympathy, so it tried to have it go to the stars at night to eat a new voice, which is why it waited till it was almost nighttime. What a kind spider.
*cup of flies
Then he has to look through his arms to find the one with the watch
and talk about flies
The scene with the spider was actually pretty clever, because in real life spiders sometimes keep frogs as pets

The part with the watch is one of the most original artistic thoughts I've seen in a long time
I thought he was going to eat the frog at first because he was rolling it away...
Also the cat with the dead bird in its paws seems like it’s based off the huge feral cat population in Australia that is killing off a huge chunk of the natural wildlife and bird population.
also the fact that they were bonding over a bowl of flies was great
As a bit of an animator myself...

I love how he constantly makes you think the frog is gonna die, but then pulls a massive subversion whenever it happens.

It’s actually a brushtail possum, one of the main two types in Australia along with the ringtail
