Laying on bed school night .
Homework not done mum and dad downstairs watching TV. Still recovering from the Jam breaking up and thinking music has finished
Put my Pye bedside clock radio on for the John peel show
    And this comes on.
    Never forget it .
    The best Band ever.

Ahh! I feel you man. As a kid in the States I had to listen to college radio in Atlanta to hear the bands I liked. The Jam were and still are in my top 5. The Smiths are number 1

i think the version of What Difference Does It Make? is far better here than on the album, Miserable Lie is just about equal, albeit this version has a bit more pish and vinegar which i like. the version of Reel Around The Fountain on the self-titled is one of my favourite songs by the smiths though, that piano part is beautiful.

Both versions are superb: this one is raw and real, the LP version has a wall of sound that wiped the floor with everything else in the top 40 at the time. For me, both are essential for every record collection 😁
