I absolutely fucking LOVE The Cure! And, as someone who's first musical love affair was with punk rock (a love affair, I might add, that has never died and has only grown with age, to now include postpunk, proto-punk, rockabilly, alternative rock, grunge and indie rock) my favourite Cure songs are all from this era, the late 70's and very early 80's, before they added the synthesizers. They were pretty much a punk band. Just guitar, bass and drums. As a guitar player I really appreciate their interesting melodies and song structures, they have a very unique and much imitated (usually ineffectively) style of guitar playing. The bass basically plays the rhythym/ song melody and the guitar parts kind of wrap around the bass This album (Three Imaginary Boys) has so many good riffs and chord progressions. I've gotten a lot of inspiration and ideas (influence, I guess) from listening to this album.
Reminds me more of 70s UK punk than 80s "goth rock".
Robert Smith and Co. are true geniuses. The Cure have stood the test of time and stand out as one of the most incredibly unique, creative, artistic, hard working and enduring bands of the 20th and 21st centuries. Their music clearly has such wide mass appeal, its really amazing how loved this band is and how many great albums and songs they have released. The Cure are also known as one of the GREATEST live acts of ALL TIME. I only started listening to The Cure about a year and a half ago (during the pandemic and the lockdown), so I have never seen them live, but I would give my left nut to see The Cure live, and Im pretty damn sure I wouldn't regret it. Such an absolutely incredible, incredible band!
While I truly enjoy every album The Cure has ever released, and am a big fan of post punk and New Wave, I have no issues with synthesizers. I really dig The Cure's so-called "gothic rock' era too, albums like Wish, Pornography and Disintegration. But as a guitar player and a lover/ listener of punk rock, especially UK/ British punk, I really never get tired of the 'Three Imaginary Boys E.P. or the first full length Cure album, which has a few of the same songs on it, I think it's called 'Boys Dont Cry'.
Also, anything from any of the John Peel Sessions is great too, as it is the same era, early Cure, just guitar bass and drums.
