And I haven't looked back, as of yet... This is an "it" band; and whatever "it" is, they most certainly have it...
When Morrissey gets hit in the eye with maybe a leaf and he disappears very shaky offstage pacing back and forth for a minute straight and the other members look so awkward it's my favorite part (22:40)
Great to be able to rewatch, having been there on the night (and on the stage too - hah). From what I remember, after 'You've Got Everything Now', some sort of order was restored, and they played a short encore, including 'Back To The Old House' and 'Accept Yourself'. Would love to have this memory confirmed by any others who were there.
I was born in 1980. Part of me is dying to have been born 16 years earlier so that i could have been 15 when 'Unknown Pleasures' came out, and 18 when The Smiths were gigging. I'd have killed to have been at this gig. They just sound incredible. To have a Marr in your band is game-changing, but to also have a Morrisey, a Joyce, and a Rourke (RIP) is just insane, and life-changing music was the result. I'd have died for this band back then. No other music spoke to me like The Smiths as a lonely, bullied teenager sitting in his surburban bedroom. Luckily then, in 1997, OK Computer came out when i was 16 and I found my generations own legends to follow around and obsess over. But Radiohead obviously owe The Smiths a huge debt- as do all who came after. What a band. What a body of work. ❤🩹❤❤❤❤
The other day I sat down to write a list of bands from the 1980's that would be remembered in 50 years time. After half an hour I had only one name on the paper.
Morrissey has always been and will remain a master until the end of the days. I think he should be banned from growing old and dying. Brazil loves morrissey
We got our first video recorder sometime mid 80s. this was one of the first things we recorded. We watched it over and over again. The Smiths were one of the greatest bands...Sex Pistols, Smiths, Stone Roses.
Watched this on bbc2 last night, back here for a rerun. Back in the 80s I got so obsessed with this band I had to stop myself listening to them for my own sanity. I've barely listened to them in the last 35 years but it's all embedded in my brain, every note, every line... truelly 90% of there output was masterpieces, dunno if even the Beatles could match that.

Top of their game here. Morrissey, what a frontman. Before the first album was released and still getting mobbed on stage.
22\05\2021-RIO DE JANEIRO\BRASIL..50 ANOS DE IDADE, CURTINDO MÚSICA DA DÉCADA DE 80.....AS MELHORES!!!!!!!!!!!
Un concierto muy bueno. ¡Cómo el público invadió el escenario! Casi lastiman a Morrissey.
Absolutamente maravilloso mi mas profunda admiracion …
This song... Handsome Devil... this band!
Pretty girls make graves sounds awesome here
Rip Andy Rourke! Thanks for everything!!!
I saw the Smiths a few times. Always got what you expected. Johnny Marr undervalued
amazing. the best of the 80s, truly. I was coming of age for them. the best.
Mike's drumming on 'What Difference Does It Make' is spot on.
I am so in love with this I can't
I saw them a few weeks before this, North East London Polytechnic, Barking but we didn't hit Mozzer in the eye with a flower 22:40
That flower leveled him lol
He had to seek medical attention
Tremendo, amo la música de esta banda ❤
Awesome gig, awesome sound quality...thank you to the person who posted this!
The Smiths changed my Life in 1993 when I was nineteen, it's like a drug, Girl Afraid the best Song ever
Girl afraid at rockpalast is amazing
oh man that is too funny... i would have loved to be on that stage
It was rather good.
are you cornish petroc jefferson? what are the odds of finding you in a youtube comments section man ahaha
@@JessePesto woah lol, small world !
@@JessePesto are you Pesto Jesse?
You could hit record and release this. Amazing band who famously never played during Coronation Street.
When Morrissey gets hit in the eye with maybe a leaf and he disappears very shaky offstage pacing back and forth for a minute straight and the other members look so awkward it's my favorite part (22:40)
i will be rewatching this
The Smiths saved the 80s! Not that you ever heard em on daytime radio, nor still do!
English adolescents pelting Morrissey with fresh cut flowers - a sweet, bizarre ritual. In today’s climate, unimaginable.
It’s 2021 I’m drunk and I would go out tonight but I don’t have a stitch to wear …. I love you Smiths!!
I was there, I seem to remember the gig was a fair bit longer than the TV broadcast...
I'm so jealous
amazing to see the place not packed and people at the back only half interested - not realising they were part of something historic
Did you also try to kill Morrissey?
No. This was before he had been replaced by his racist Doppelganger.
@@InParticularNobody even back then I never got the impression Morrissey was a particularly nice person but he was an amazing front man and writer
He's so cool. Look at that hair
Today I learned that almost all my fave Smiths songs were already written by the time I was 8
The other day I sat down to write a list of bands from the 1980's that would be remembered in 50 years time. After half an hour I had only one name on the paper.
Andy Kershaw?
@@johnbarry1965 Yep.
@@chrisst8922 I remember it so well, then the newly Five Smith's went into "Big-mouth strikes again", I was blown away!!
Seriously? Come on, there were many great bands then that will be remembered.
@@erad67 Please suggest some names.
Love music from early 80's
Dancing at the East Side club in center city Philly
Seems like only yesterday 🎇
i love how Morrissey just runs off at the start of miserable lie
He did that because the public threw something at him, right?
What happened there?? Scrolling through the comments to find out.
@@jordancooperlalalagot hit by a flower lol
I taped over my father's snooker with this and he went spare!
Morrissey has always been and will remain a master until the end of the days. I think he should be banned from growing old and dying. Brazil loves morrissey
Brazilian people have great musical taste says a dude from Los Angeles
Love you all from Birmingham England!
We got our first video recorder sometime mid 80s. this was one of the first things we recorded. We watched it over and over again. The Smiths were one of the greatest bands...Sex Pistols, Smiths, Stone Roses.
There's more to life than books you know, but not much more.
Did you come up with this? If so, I love it and a, adding it to my quote list
No I did not come up with that it is Morrissey from handsome devil. lol
Thank you for this video. I'm going to watch it several times
AWESOME
how do I give a thousand likes💓
Johnny marr is a fucking good guitarist.
He certainly is my friend! A virtual wizard
How old are you now?

Christ.. who would 'dislike' this!? Weird
Johnny's tone is awesome in this. Sounds more chorusy than the studio versions.
iam 55 and was the best band in the 80 by farrrrrrr
Flowers + good music = VIBESSSSS
This audio quality is incredible - thanks for the upload!
The Smiths raw but a great live band. Thankyou for posting this 👍😃
DANCEI MUITO THE SMITH, E SE TOCAR NA PISTA DANÇO DE NOVO... MUITO BOM!!!
I remember when this was shown on T.V. My sister recorded it and we watched it over and over. Great days.
A flatmate gave me a ticket for the gig. He was a roadie and wasn't that keen. Fantastic show. A mate (Kevin Greatorex) got on stage.
