I have not skated for years, this video happened to appear in my recommendations. Made me think how i used to push when i skated at a young age. As a regular skater, it felt natural for me to move my back foot towards the middle of the board and push with my front foot adjusting my feet upon reaching the desired speed. Difficult to explain but basically there would be a brief moment in time where both feet would be centered on the board and my back foot would slide back towards the tail of the board. This is just how i learnt to skate from a very young age in the streets after school, to be honest i don't think i ever grew out of the habit.

No need to change, if anyone talks shit on mongo they probably have a small penis, the value of this video is only if you want to conform and look like everyone else so you can do the same tricks, lol. Be yourself and look for new tricks using the front foot instead of going for kickflips.
@@maskcollector6949 its just a bit harder finding tricks for mongo you know, idk if theres that many tutorials on how to trick on mongo instead of tricks on regular
@@augusta1994 Working on starting a channel, cause you're right. Instead of ollies do nollies and ride fakie a lot to explore new foot placement and center of gravity. I like taking the board on carpet at first to get more control by doing 180 manuals and nose manuals constantly because those set up for a lot of tricks and they help find balance.I focused mostly on flatground and hills when I skated a lot so I'm relearning everything as a body expert now (massage therapist/kinesiologist). Once you get used to spinning around and trying out all four main foot placements (switch, mongo, fakie, regular) you get the building blocks to be ambidextrous. After that start doing more nollies and stuff, I feel like rotational balance is the hardest to develop. Repetition trains proprioceptors in our body to remember and feel out the space and form a new neural pathway to create a habit.
If you are used to mongo none of this applies, I use to be a scooter kid and pushed that way so when I started skating I kept skating like that, anyway the throw down thing I just throw it down as with my normal hand but catch it with my back foot instead of front and the short run up thing is the same as regular if u are used to pushing mongo instead of having your front foot already in position you have your back and place your front one on to the front after the push, once again if u are used to mongo you just get good with putting your front foot down in the right place like how regulars get used to popping with their back foot, I can barely skate regular so I can see how you might think this about mongo because you are used to skating regular so thanks for putting that in the video, keep up the good work 👍
it becomes instinctive, back foot on the bolts while pushing slides back the second you put your flick foot down. you dont even think about it. Anyone who naturally pushes mongo mitigates all these problems without even thinking about it.
I have always pushed both ways, not feeling more or less comfortable with either. i feel no advantage to either. All the problems mentioned are simply caused by it being his opposite way of pushing, its only coincidence that its mongo
Reuben Bedford if you start with your back foot in position then that would make your tail hit the ground when you pushed. also the front foot takes longer to set up because it has a more important job than the back foot on most tricks (obviously pressure flips and impossibles don't use the front foot )
I am a 43yr longboarder. Been skating since I was 10. I started out on a Nash Burton it was cool in the 80s. Any I always pushed Mongo switch style. It's more comfortable and I balance better that way. I need that because longboards are heavier and I need my power leg to push and pick up speed. My oldest son makes fun of me, but 33yrs skating and it just works for me. Great video thank you.
Turning while pushing mongo is a lot easier since you can actually have you heel behind the back truck so that if you need to turn really sharply, you can actually just raise the front truck and turn how much you want
If a person does something just because someone else tells them to do it, they have a way bigger problem than pushing technique. Are you skating for yourself, or for little shits that come on the internet looking for videos on "how to be a convincing skater"? Skateboarding used to be about individuality and having fun--people that dissect things like pushing are sucking the very soul out of skating - that same soul is what drew me into it in 1994.
you are absolutely right. First comment i've read on trying to question why anyone would try to take the soul out of skateboarding. I have started skating a month or two ago. I'm 32 years old so I was skateboarding around 2000 and I really can't recall anyone, ever, saying I couldn't mongo push and had to change my style. I still cant push regular, and I will not bother learning it too. Skateboarding is not about that for me, and actually, my friends that still skateboard couldn't and wouldn't care for it..
I agree. My natural push was mongo in 1991 and i don't recall anyone even labeling the push. People just skated however thier brain and body connected the moves.
Guys who say a booohoho you push Mongo or you do mall grab ARE the biggest poser douchebag Mongols ever..... Fuck them they are no skater they just bullies and have biiiig complexes
Only problem I've had at higher speeds is accidentally catching my right ankle with my left foot on the push and almost falling. Or I've had a problem where I go too fast and my body starts to lag behind the boardand it feels like I'm trying to catch up. Other than that it's so natural and I ride everywhere like that.
When I started skate at high school a friend of mine saw me pushing like that and in a funny tone of voice he said to me "ohh you filthy mongo pusher!" i just laughed and thought it was fun and cool to be mongo... and funny too when saw regular or goofy guys trying to push mongo and failing. Mongo is cool :3 skate is love.
Great video man, I ain't gonna lie I use to push mongo simply because I didn't know any better, I was a self taught skater so I did what felt natural. Since then I've tought myself how to skate regular and goofy and in very comfortable with both. So for those out there who says "it's to difficult to change styles", well yes at first it is. But I literally took me like a day to learn regular pushing well, so give it a try! Good luck 💯
Emo Rebel its okay to mongo who cares what people say if u wanna push regular go for it! but if ur changing just for other people dont cause its not benefiting you
how does scootering make u push mongo LOL i always used to and do scooter with my right foot at the top of the deck left foot pushing but when i skate which im trying to learn more i have my left foot at the top of the board and right foot pushing
That's actually a benefit I believe pushing mongo may have. Hitting a crack or a pebble or whatever with only your back foot on the board lets you shift a little extra weight to your grounded foot to perform a tiny automatic no comply type thing to easily get over. Perhaps its the same when people are really comfortable pushing regular, I'm just not there yet.
@@yellaturd When I go over cracks pushing regular I just lift my front foot a little bit and put my weight on the foot thats pushing, so the board kinda pops over the crack but I dont lost control of it.
Same here but when you don't have enough spacing you could just push regular because I feel like when you're mongo, you are comfortable riding mongo at high speed. If you need to do a trick with less spacing it means less speed and pushing regular at less speed still feels OK to me as a mongo pusher.
What dave said, when i have a short run up I'm ether just hopping on the board with no push at all or I push regular once or twice but if I need balls out speed I'm still faster mongo by far and more stable since the front of the board will just bounce over cracks and rocks I find.
Back when i was a kid i had to teach myself so i "pushed mongo" my entire childhood and no one cared. Tf is with people nowadays? Same thing with the mall grab. Used to do that all the time. Way better than pinching the board and giving yourself a hand cramp. Or putting the board under your arm and having it skin you or ruin your shirt
Uhh so I’m a beginner so I don’t know much but like when I got my board pushing mongo was the first thing that I learned and so I’m gonna practice on pushing regular! :3 thanks for the help man! 😌
Welcome to skating you’re going to love it! Push whatever way feels comfortable to you! I push both depending on the scenario. I teach skating as well so let me know if you have any questions. I’d love to help get you going!
I push both ways. I agree there’s a time and place for both. Pushing mongo allows me to give my other leg a rest so I can skate longer. Just my experience. Well out together video!
The thing is though every skater I know that pushes mongo is fucking sick. I think it gives you more balance, I couldn't do it for sure, and I think that it's a thing that you just do it or don't. I also think mongo pushers have better board feel and control because they've had to overcome all the awkward impractical affects of riding Mongo
Pushing mongo is THE WAY to skate around streets and pavement covered in gravel. If I skated regular I’d hit the deck every single day. Sometimes I do skate regular and it’s super sketchy if the pavement is no good. Also, Out of all the people that complained about my mongo I’ve never seen any of them skate. Ever.
Very useful I started skating recently and I haven't skated since freshman year. I'm in college right now and mongo riding is the way I learned to skate for the first time.
Like he said do it whichever way feels right to you. I push both ways depending on the scenario. Welcome to the skating community! Let me know if you need any help!
When I do *normal* I always get caught on the back of the board and that's why I do mongo also these reasons 1. It's more comfortable 2. EZ 3.WAY MORE balance (in my opinion)
When I first had my skateboard, I used to push mongo. I have up after like 4 days. I'm getting a new board in April, so now I know how to properly push. 👍
Some of yall really either didn't watch the whole video, or are extremely isecure about how you push, he is just showcasing some of the downsides that come with mongo pushing, hes not sitting here saying you guys are all posers.
So according to logical reasons, pushing mongo makes sense to approach a nollie trick: you prepare your back foot in the correct position, push mongo and put the front foot in the nose to pop the trick
JPsk8core sort of. if you faced backwards while you pushed. if you face forwards then your flick foot is facing the wrong way (hard to explain without visual aid)
so if youre doing a nollie flip youre gonna push forwards with your back foot in the flip position, facing backwards? how you gonna twist your leg around while youre pushing?
I love when these regular pushers try to make a video about mongo being wrong, and pretending to show why and how, but if you don't do it by nature, of course it's gonna look shitty. You should see me try pushing regular.
It's demonstrably a worse way to skate, because your weight's in the wrong place to deal with nearly every typical situation while skating. I just hope you don't have a nasty bail while pushing mongo because falling backwards is wayyyy worse than falling forwards.
when i started skating, my dad said I was pushing it wrong; he pushed mongo. I always thought it was harder as when you pushed mongo, you have to move your foot a further distance forward opposed to pushing non-mongo where you just have to put your foot on the tail
"If you push mongo, and you're good at it, and none of these problems affect you... Then I say who cares? Just keep doing what you're doing." But Imma make a video stating why you're doing it wrong anyway.
Marquis Hunger this is for the people that are new, if you’ve been pushing mongo for years then it is what it is, if you’ve been pushing mongo for months then you can always opt out
@@dorkapotomusrex3084 The mongo balance dance is one of the most fun things about skateboarding. It can look totally natural if you're used to it. Standing on the back foot allows more feedback with the ground so you have to balance on one foot, it's a whole body movement. Skaters seem to like to conform more than be original, it seems. The front foot should be used as a counterweight, it looks smoother. I hover mine off the board, usually. Most people just haven't figured that out yet.
Dude I've been pushing mongo so long it's like second nature to me now feels natural to me and it's dope cause like you said I've been working on switch trucks and can bust them out at the park now
I’ve ridden Mongo since I was a kid.. I’m 22 now and I’ve learned that it is more difficult with things, but it can still work... I can’t imagine skating “normal” I ride Goofy Mongo dude.. it’s wild
I didn’t downvote this video, but as someone who has pushed mongo forever and attempted to push regular for about two weeks, IMO you have one 1 single valid piece of criticism in this entire set, as everything else is easily worked around with time and comfort, and I do mean everything. Reaction time between kicking and trick set up. There is that half a second where you have to scoot around. I never found a universal way to get around this, so I usually ended up just doing one extra-hard push before getting to wherever I was going to do the trick for maintaining momentum while adjusting. All your other gripes were you just being uncomfortable doing something ass backwards. I went thru most of the same pain-points when trying regular a while back. I really wanted to learn how to do it the “right” way, but in the end a lifetime of muscle memory just feels so much for right than doing whatever some crowd of random people think is superior for this or that reason. Btw you were totally right about pushing regular switch. It’s very easy when you’re used to pushing mongo. Easier than pushing regular at least 😅
I'm glad I came across your video...I never knew the term for my disability , and it explains my skating from the late 70's and 80's..i did push switch-normal but was not comfortable in goofy...but i had more control pushing until that back foot got on the board. Made for great nollie 180 flips n grinds. Thanks
I've always pushed mongo, and you do get a lot of criticism. It's a lot more comfortable when its what you've always done. The only time it is genuinely a handicap is with short run-ups, having to set up both feet on the go takes too much time. Throwing down isn't a problem as I'm right-handed skating regular, and pushing when going really fast isn't either, I just have to shift my back foot closer to the center of the board. I kinda like being that odd one out mongo pusher, but if I could go back I would definitely learn to push properly.
I skimboard and ride goofy all my weight goes on that back leg and I trust that back leg with my life lol anyways I’ll try doing it the right way but idk man I’m pretty good at mongo
All of these criticisms are valid. I say this with twenty plus years of mongo pushing experience. Each problem noted in the video was something I learned how to overcome. Of course back then I didn't see it as a challenge associated with my pushing style, it was just learning how to skateboard. I did eventually learn conventional style and now feel about equally comfortable with either. The one thing I really like about mongo is stability (at least for me personally). It's not quite as fussy about your board foot position when you're pushing. It's true that this does make it a little more challenging to turn with one foot as noted.
I just realized I’ve been skating mongo for a whole year and no one has ever told me I started pushing normal today and it is so much easier to land tricks and ride like omg I am amazed
I push mongo and always have, but you are definitely right about setting up your feet for tricks. I've been snowboarding for years and when you ride on the chair and get off... you have to do it regular. I wish there was a video about how to go from mongo to regular. Thanks for your video.
Ive always skated mongo so i can throw down running without a problem.. And a quick set up isnt a bother either, actually i think it has to do with the way you naturally learn, to me all these examples are vice versa with kicking normal
I always pushed mongo, my left leg for whatever reason doesn’t have enough stability to stay balanced on the board. I push with the very heel of my shoe on the bottom of the tail so I can do tiny pivots to direct myself. I never really had too much trouble going fast other than the speed wobbles which I feel like is challenging for amateurs no matter how you push
I started pushing mongo when i was little bc i ride goofy but i feel like i can push faster with my right leg. I switched to regular and just got used to it. But if i need hella speed for something ill still push mongo.
I unfortunately got used to mongo 5-8th grade and got good at it. I got back into skating in college and as a sophomore now picking up skating again, it’s extremely awkward trying to learn how to push regular. I can confirm the idea you said about how when you pushed switch it felt comfortable and that you could imagine it being comfortable for those who push mongo, because now that I’m forcing regular onto myself I’m constantly eating shit and I look like a bigger goof than I did back when I pushed mongo and didn’t eat shit. I was skating at vcu recently and destroyed my knee because I couldn’t push very fast regular but was trying to anyways and I couldn’t bring my back foot far enough up to the board and it all spiraled down. I pushed mongo the rest of the day and it was like I picked up right where I left off in 9th. I hope regular feels normal soon because it feels like I’m forcing myself to play left handed guitar when I learned right
I totally agree, I push mongo and I find it hard to keep my board in the direction I want to travel so I look like a “mongo” skating. All heavy footed which isn’t what I want. So I’m gunna learn to push regular or goofy for sure. These vids are just what I need, been skating a year now and I’ve never really properly looked into it really, especially as it’s been winter (as I never ride in the winter just spring and summer.)
I taught myself to skate on a farm riding a Mash board in 1987 and without knowing what was what I ended up pushing Mongo for 30 years. I only learned Regular 2 years ago, and when I did, I was shocked out how much easier skating became for me. Everything you pointed out as a weakness with Mongo pushing is accurate (particularly the ½ second lost adjusting feet, the board throw down, and the vulnerability to cracks). The only plus was that I got very comfortable with things like hippie jumps early on, because of the practice I got adjusting my feet after pumping. If you watch a comfortable Mongo skater who is skating fast very closely, you’ll see that after pumping , as they’re putting their front foot on the board they often hop of their back foot to adjust it at the same time. But, yeah, Mongo puts one (or at least put me) at a disadvantage for 30 years.
My opinion as a mongo: For the first trick I just jump on it 0.5 secs after The second is just straight fax For the third one i can also do that in Mongo The fourth just straight up disagree I am not a down hill pro but im comgortable driving fast The fifth I kindaaaa agree but thats not such a big deal
For any skaters who gatekeep (not you) are not aware that what works for someone won't always do likewise. Like you said, this is your opinion. Mongo personally is comfy to me and it's good to see someone who prefers normal, does NOT give a shit about other people's pushing style❤ Thank you for not gate keeping!
If you learnt to skate in the 90s with council paving slabs for pavements, mongo pushing was a life saver. One foot manual while pushing allowed the board to pop those uneven slabs. We dreamt of smooth tarmac that we saw on 411 VHS.

Right
If you are used to mongo none of this applies, I use to be a scooter kid and pushed that way so when I started skating I kept skating like that, anyway the throw down thing I just throw it down as with my normal hand but catch it with my back foot instead of front and the short run up thing is the same as regular if u are used to pushing mongo instead of having your front foot already in position you have your back and place your front one on to the front after the push, once again if u are used to mongo you just get good with putting your front foot down in the right place like how regulars get used to popping with their back foot, I can barely skate regular so I can see how you might think this about mongo because you are used to skating regular so thanks for putting that in the video, keep up the good work 👍
Reuben Bedford Haha my name's Reuben and I literally have the exact same reasons for pushing mongo, crazy mate
Reuben Bedford how can you do the foot positioning if the pop is needed at the back of the tail, this would cause the board to go on the back wheels
it becomes instinctive, back foot on the bolts while pushing slides back the second you put your flick foot down. you dont even think about it.

Bro, no wonder your son makes fun of you. In the end you ever try regular or goofy?
Turning while pushing mongo is a lot easier since you can actually have you heel behind the back truck so that if you need to turn really sharply, you can actually just raise the front truck and turn how much you want
cat intensifies exactly, when I push normally, i can't turn as easy, but i guess I'll just have to practice more

If a person does something just because someone else tells them to do it, they have a way bigger problem than pushing technique. Are you skating for yourself, or for little shits that come on the internet looking for videos on "how to be a convincing skater"? Skateboarding used to be about individuality and having fun--people that dissect things like pushing are sucking the very soul out of skating - that same soul is what drew me into it in 1994.
mongo pusher detected
Well said 🤘
you are absolutely right.
I always wondered why skaters all laugh and mock me but when I ask them about it they always say the same thing” no your good bro” then laugh
I push mongo, and I can agree pushing at high speeds can be difficult, but I can't do regular at all, so I just stick with mongo.
Bungus
Me too
I think you should try to practice both, although I understand why you might push mongo but at least try to learn both
Only problem I've had at higher speeds is accidentally catching my right ankle with my left foot on the push and almost falling.
Good luck 💯
This makes me feel so much better, I was so stressed because I ride mongo and everyone was telling me I was doing it wrong

For me, it is extremely uncomfortable to push mongo. As a goofy, if I push mongo, it is really hard to balance.
Same. Ever since I taught myself to ride regular, I can do tricks faster
The thing is though every skater I know that pushes mongo is fucking sick. I think it gives you more balance, I couldn't do it for sure, and I think that it's a thing that you just do it or don't. I also think mongo pushers have better board feel and control because they've had to overcome all the awkward impractical affects of riding Mongo
and riding switch is easier for them
What the fuck
Pushing mongo is THE WAY to skate around streets and pavement covered in gravel. If I skated regular I’d hit the deck every single day. Sometimes I do skate regular and it’s super sketchy if the pavement is no good.

I'm not a skater and I never skated, but to me, Mongo pushing feels natural.

My friend coined the term goofy goof for me back in 2004, I ride the same.
I hope regular feels normal soon because it feels like I’m forcing myself to play left handed guitar when I learned right
Did you ever recover?
@@rchaelk2319 oh yeah baby lol
Mongo pushing is the equivalent to pouring the milk before the cereal
I totally agree, I push mongo and I find it hard to keep my board in the direction I want to travel so I look like a “mongo” skating. All heavy footed which isn’t what I want. So I’m gunna learn to push regular or goofy for sure. These vids are just what I need, been skating a year now and I’ve never really properly looked into it really, especially as it’s been winter (as I never ride in the winter just spring and summer.)
Thank God. I though I pushed mongo for a long time since I connected it with regular pushing. Thank you for clearing this up for me!
It’s not comfortable going”regular” is harder for me
I’m glad u made the disclaimer I skate both but I drop in goofy and Ollie regular so I’m learning the right way late which is still pretty cool
But, yeah, Mongo puts one (or at least put me) at a disadvantage for 30 years.
...Nash
My opinion as a mongo:
For the first trick I just jump on it 0.5 secs after
The second is just straight fax
For the third one i can also do that in Mongo
The fourth just straight up disagree I am not a down hill pro but im comgortable driving fast
The fifth I kindaaaa agree but thats not such a big deal
For any skaters who gatekeep (not you) are not aware that what works for someone won't always do likewise. Like you said, this is your opinion.
Mongo personally is comfy to me and it's good to see someone who prefers normal, does NOT give a shit about other people's pushing style❤ Thank you for not gate keeping!
If you learnt to skate in the 90s with council paving slabs for pavements, mongo pushing was a life saver. One foot manual while pushing allowed the board to pop those uneven slabs.
