i've been skating for years, and recently i rolled one of my ankles trying to ollie on flatground. then two days later i rolled the other ankle trying to do a nollie
At some point, all skaters didn’t know what it was. Tony Hawk at one point didn’t know what an ollie was. Learn the vocabulary as best as you can, but don’t be ashamed to immediately not know what tricks are,
I started skating around 4 years ago and haven't thought much about what it was like when I first began learning ollies and 180s. This video gave me a sense of nostalgia because I remember experiencing all of these problems. It took me so long to figure out how to keep my ollies straight. It took me weeks to get my 180s to rotate fully. SO many hours spent in carparks practising ollies and fs180s. I look back on that time fondly because I really thought that I wasn't good enough to learn those tricks, but now I have dozens of tricks and I look forward to the future when I learn dozens more.
Wow your back! I started skating 3 months ago and your channel really helped me! Happy to see your still uploading! :) Edit: wow this video was really helpful, I can't relate to a few things here and this can hopefully help me with them!
Hey! Am 42, and just started learning skateboarding. Quarantine hobbies ftw. Anyhoo, am subscribing to this channel, trying to pick up tips, and hoping I don't kill myself. Am currently working on the Caveman, 180 No Comply, and the Manual. Kinda got the Caveman, but definitely far, far, far from the other two. Wish me luck!
Welcome back and I feel that I gained experience but I can't exit the 50-50 grind consistently and can't land a kickflip. I can say that it is normal to turn the shoulders while doing an ollie and try to look at the direction of where you are going while trying.
For the longest time i've been cursing my damn shoulders for my crooked Ollies. 4 months of trying later, still crooked. I was about to throw my skateboard in the trash. One video later and it turns out my stupid back foot was in the wrong position. Straight as an arrow ever since. Thanks VL!
For me I found that part of the reason my board was flying away on kickflips was just that I was kicking too hard using my whole leg. It's more about having a controlled flick of the ankle, your leg doesn't actually need to kick much at all. If you use the full power of your entire leg you'll just kick it far away and won't get the precise motion you need to consistently flip the board properly. Dial the power way down and focus on refining the little flick that your foot does. You need a lot of precision but not very much power. As for heel flips.....good question, I can't do em either.....heh heh
4:25 this is the first time anyone on youtube iv seen anyway actually tell u when your in the motion of doing an ollie. that u don't have to press your tail all the way to the floor to do an ollie because that isn't going to make u jump. istg no one has ever mentioned when to jump and the whole ''practice before ollie'' like snapping down your tail and brushing your foot up the board wasn't the only components to doing an ollie so thank you very much for specifying i shall subscribe now
Nobody will probably care, and the comment will most likely be lost, but thank you VLSkate. Your a realy good skater, and you also seem to be a really good teacher too. Also... Thanks for coming back. Keep doing what your doing.
Same problem here, although it's been getting better. I think I was overcompensating due to fear of falling backwards when landing. Try to keep your body straight above the board.
Just keep practicing you'll eventually find out why your having that problem I kept watching ollie tutorials but they didn't really help so I just kept trying to ollie and found out myself each time you mess up you get closer to knowing your mistake
@@justinward253 sorry for the late response! I couldnt find anything in videos either though. But yep you're right, I'm getting a little better now, I'm just trying to get over the fear of going to ollie on and off of objects
@@dmdn1512 same I cant ollie on or off anything, though I'll admit I haven't been skating these past 3 months I'll be back on the grind on march it's just been to cold for me lol
I skate a little bit now and then but I kiteboard quite a bit. The rotating while doing an ollie I think really is just a mental thing and something you need to consciously keep in mind. In kiteboarding you pretty much always start or jump riding sideways to the wind direction and land heading down wind. So all the tricks are kinda turning 90 degrees backside. At first most people are inclined to land the same direction they took off or rotate to frontside a bit. But really you need to focus on landing in a downwind direction instead. A good way of consciously maintaining the direction is to always think to land the board to the direction you are traveling. So in skateboarding it's mostly the direction you are moving before the trick and in kiteboarding it's the direction the wind is pulling you. So on a skateboard you land pointing to where you are headed and in kiteboarding I also land pointing to where I'm headed. Point the board to where you are traveling to. It can be done by just consciosly thinking about trying to point where you are going.
Omg thank you for coming back!! I'm a beginner girl skater and your videos help me with problems, keep me motivated, and overall entertain me!! Ur vids are quick and to the point, whereas other YT skaters take sooo long!! Love ur vids 😊
I just recently got a skate and I'm so excited, though I only skated 2 times yet 😅 It feels awesome when you can finally even simply push without falling from your board
I stopped skating on my teens due to a medical condition, I've gotten better but I guess I was a bit scared to try again. Thanks to your videos I'm gonna give it a try again, thanks a lot man :)
For all the beginners who push one was and do tricks the other way, I feel your pain. It’s probably because you are right or left foot dominant. I started out skating goofy and had to switch to regular to do tricks, and it was most likely because my left foot felt more in control. I would suggest trying to skate the way you do tricks. Good luck :)
I was turning frontside too when doing ollies. my problem was the front foot not the back foot which you don't mention. it had to go more to the back so the heel would be hanging further behind in the air. it made my ollies look way better and eliminating the tic tac. I hope it helps someone.
I'm getting my first sk8 board Christmas, I can't even ballance but I'm just going to try my best, I've been looking at some of your vids and hopefully they will help xD
Just started trying to skate today, ollied for the first time but it was really bad and I ended up busting my hip and ankle. Only bruised not broken or anything but still gonna be a set back. Overcoming your first fall is part of the fun of skating.
i’m here because i just got a skateboard after 5 years. i had one when i was 11 but my dad ran over it by accident lol. i got on my board for the first time yesterday and didn’t realize i lost all my improvement. i had absolutely no balance and was scared to even move my foot on the board. hoping i get better
If u want to know what stance you are get a friend to push you backwards The first foot that goes back to stop your fall is often your foot that should go in front
Biggest problem I notice with beginners and I had the same problem when I was starting, is just not committing to the tricks. You just have to force yourself to try and actually land it
As a beginner your vids are always helpful. cos my Ollies too make a turn no matter how hard i try. I try to keep my body straight and still -_- lol but i'ma keep practicing
i accidentally filmed some clips at a low frame rate so the slow mo looks choppy :(
You are finnaly back, thank you

I turned frontside on ollies because of significant muscle imbalances PLUS the reasons you said . It took me a while to fix it.
