Plus, Sigourney is in it, being the absolute queen that she is in everything, so...
I just realized that this exchange totally answers their question about why sci-fi comedy does not sell. They saw those trailers and that cover and went "Paul is probably some crappy thing with Seth Rogen grunting into a microphone making tired Area 51 jokes". That's exactly how Galaxy Quest bombed.
It was good for what it is.

If you have read any of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels past The Light Fantastic and got nothing out of them beyond "they're silly," Spencer, you may want to take a second look. I have read many of them multiple times each, and every time I find something new. To paraphrase/quote one of the reviews (I forget which), "Terry Pratchett is the kindest, most fascinating teacher you will ever have."
Americans just don't get quite a wide swathe of British humour or cultural references. Loved Terry Pratchett's books since 1987 or so but the USA was then and remains largely indifferent. No matter, we in the British Isles will always appreciate his towering brilliance.

I agree, this movie was totally mismarketed. I refused to watch it when my parents rented it, then I heard their hysterical laughter from the living room. We watched it and I realized how amazing it is! Hands down, one of my favorite movies!

You did a documentary on the movie, and didn't know that Tony Shaloub was supposed to be a stoner? Which is why he is eating in a lot of the scenes?

JJ Abrams was only really on Lost for the pilot and then he left Lindelof for Star Trek. He was the only guy and he was churning out scripts and freaking out. JJ said get someone to help so the 2nd season he brought on Carlton Cuse. He actually wanted to turn over showrunner duties and just be a writer, but I think Carlton knew he was in over his head. After the show Cuse did the Strain, a terrible unsurprising vampire series and Jack Ryan, very straightforward while Damon did leftovers and watchmen. It was always Lindelof, Lindelof is a creative genius and I will watch everything he touches with great anticipation

What I think is forgotten by all was the SNL skit when Schattner did a "ComiCon Panel mocking the nerds" only to be "joking" about it. This movie came out about 1-2 years after that skit ran, but was probably lost in the lore leading up to this movie.

Peter David did successful move from comics to book sci fi and one of the reasons I enjoy him is that even his hard sci fi had serious comedy in it.
Oh, Tony Shalhoub's character reminded me so much of Johnny Fever from "WKRP in Cincinnati," a stoner who seems to always inexplicably be stoned.
Galaxy Quest is space Three Amigos. Both are such awesome movies.
Disk world has been adapted multiple times and they are all great. the animated Color of Music was done in a style that was reminiscent but different from yellow submarine making the Beatles parody that it is even better
Came here for this...yeah Discworld has already been adapted and I thought the live action films were done pretty well.
That reminds me, I need to see Hogfather and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the original with Karloff) sometime in the next five days.

Oh come on. Tech Sargent Chen is slowly speaking and is eating snacks in one scene. And he is always smiling. And one actor literally asked him: „Are you stoned?“. He is like a walking stoner-joke. We all laughed knowingly. To speculate he is on anything else is absolutely ridiculous.
Actor Tony Shalhoub was born and raised in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He graduated Green Bay East High School.

Discworld is not Sci-Fantasy. It is Fantasy, or Sword & Sorcery. Later on it becomes Dickensian.

Hogfather is excellent; Going Postal is okayish. Very difficult to put on screen though.
The Colour of Magic wasn't bad, either.

I did see it in the cinema when it was first out. Don’t think I’d seen any of the trailers, just thought it sounded fun. At the time I lived literally a five minute walk from the biggest shopping centre/cinema complex in my city, so I’d see lots of movies.
