    Sweden here! I so hope Norway wins Eurovision 2024! This song is just fantastic. It’s Nordic in its sound, sung in Norwegian and it has a Nyckelharpa (the string instrument). It’s not like the stolen 90s hits Sweden is competing with! Go Norway and just for the hell and the fun of it, Finland 2’nd!

    Awesome reaction🤘
    The instrument you see in the beginning is a traditional nordic instrument called nøkkelharpe/key harp
    I love this song and performance😍
    Gåte (gaw-teh) has been a band for years and are known for being one of the best live bands in Norway🤘
    Their genre is Norwegian folk music mixed with rock/metal
    Ulveham means wolfskin
    The intro is an old “kulokk”, a “kulokk” is when the women called/calls the cows home to be milked in the summer, often in the mountains.
    The chorus of the song is inspired by this “kulokk”
    The song itself is inspired by a medieval folklore/ballade
    I recommend checking out the longer version, love it😍
    Too bad they had to shorten it down to three minutes for Eurovision🤷‍♀️
    English lyrics:
    [Sample: Vocalization; Marit Jensen Lillebuen]
    [Verse 1]
    I was such a beautiful maiden
    My stepmother evil, my mother she died
    She turned me into a sword and a needle
    And sent me to the king's estate
    And the anger my stepmother felt the most
    That all the stately liked me best
    [Chorus: Vocalization]
    [Verse 2]
    Then she gave me skin like a grey wolf
    She cursed me to walk the forest alone
    And never will I bе whole and good
    Before I drink my brothеrs' blood
    [Chorus: Vocalization]
    [Outro: Vocalization, Storm]
    I then tore out her heart
    So her blood flowed free
    Then I got to drink my brothers' blood
    Greetings from Norway 🇳🇴

I had barely heard about them then, because they were just beginning to make a name for themselves. I'm so happy to read all the nice comments here. What they have done to make centuries old Norwegian folk music available to a MUCH wider audience is astonishing. I never listened to that kind of music. The intro vocals are supposed to be the "original" to this tune, I guess, an early medieval ballad. I don't know if this is an actual sample of a recording of this "original", or they recorded it themselves (leaning towards the latter), it is somewhat distorted.
    Now, to the song technique, it is traditional Scandinavian singing, with roots from at least the 13th century. Dunno the "correct" term for it, but it is kind of like going into and out of falsetto, not too unlike yodeling. The folk music this is based off of had klind of a resurgence in Norway in the national romantic era of the mid 19th century, and has survived as a niche 'til today. Gåte (pron.: ca "gaw-teh" - literaly "riddle") took these folk elements and added a rock sound (and sometimes, like here, an electro/breakbeat sound) to it, and they've been around (on and off) for some 25 years by now. The singer, Gunhild, was still a teenager when they released their full length debut.

    In 2001/2002-ish I saw Gåte live in a small venue with capacity of 400. It was epic.
    But the talking points before the gig was that Gunhild was legally too young to enter the venue. She was 16 or 17 back then. 😁

    They have several albums of great music, so now you have a whole universe of folklore and story telling Folkrock to enjoy. She was only 13 when she started what became this band with her brother, and 16-17 when they broke through with their album Jygri, so she has been doing this for a long time. They are amazing live. The lyrics are always based on old mystical tales or on folk music songs.
    If you watch the song Bendik & Årolilja, you will see how incredible young she was, and how talented at that early stage. The song is a sad lovestory about Bendik who falls in love with the kings daughter, and gets executed because he visited her secretly. She dies from sorrow.
    Enjoy, this over 20 years old hit.

    I can’t believe that it came last- I would not watch ESC until 2034- a 10year boycott is my response.

    Well done Norway! This is really out of the comfort zone. I hope you get rewarded, but is Europe ready for this?

    • @susannradal9303
      @susannradal9303 5 месяцев назад

      This is actually in our comfort zone Gåte are very popular and has been for 20 years😄
      Its just that we always try thinking what Europe would like and not us but I knew Gåte would win as soon as i heard they where entering.
      Only reason they did not win with a landslide was because of the International jury that had them second.

    they are using a Swedish Nyckelharpa, plus I did not want Marcus and Martinus to win, they are half Swedish thoug, love your channel, I am a swede, I hate the international jury, I think Finland deserved to win last year

    • @ahkkariq7406
      @ahkkariq7406 6 месяцев назад +4

      Marcus and Martinus are Norwegian, but spend a lot of time in Sweden (maybe even more time there than in Norway) so I guess they have strong feelings for the country. They are also from northern Norway, so they have probably spent many summers in Sweden growing up.
      However, the song is half Swedish, with the help of Swedish songwriters and producers. It's nice that we can share the artists in the two countries. We Norwegians have undoubtedly listened a lot to Swedish artists and other Swedish entertainment. But we do not claim them unless they are actually half Norwegian, like Elisabeth Andreassen.

      @@ahkkariq7406
      Marcus and martinus are Norwegian. So is Elisabeth Andreassen. She has lived in Sweden yes but she is not half Swedish. Neither are they.

    • @ahkkariq7406
      @ahkkariq7406 6 месяцев назад

      @@mari97216 Elisabeth er i motsetning til Marcus og Martinus født i Sverige, og er delvis oppvokst i Gøteborg, der hennes foreldre bodde til sin død. Hun er like svensk som Alexander Rybak er norsk (noe jeg tør vedde på at du mener). Det vil si, hun er både norsk og svensk, mens Alexander er både norsk og hviterussisk. Marcus og Martinus blir ikke svenske/delvis svenske før de eventuelt flytter til Sverige for godt og får svensk statsborgerskap.

    My favorite so far too. Not this year, all years favorite. I don't care about contest or context, I watch EV only for beautiful music, this is the one. Too good. My country (Ukraine) in a final too, but I support this one more.
