Amen! Preach it sister! I agree100% on just telling your kids NO. Jill, you are right. You are the parent. If they throw a fit when you say no, it's your fault because that is what you have taught them. Say what you mean, and mean what you say! It actually makes your children feel secure when you do.
I'm so glad you addressed telling your children "no!" It horrifies me seeing children throwing tantrums & then the parents buying it for them to keep them quiet!! Of course, they're going to do it again next time & every time!! Great tips ladies! 🥰 Blessings from South Australia💕🐨
I'm learning to watch prices everywhere when I pay. My husband and I go out to eat at Olive Garden after church sometimes and there's always something on our receipt that we didn't order or get. Usually they charge for 2 drinks when I only get water. Once it was an expensive appetizer. It pays to pay attention!
I really like how you pointed out that not always buying the bulk item is worth it although the unit price is cheaper. It is only my husband and I and we don't go through much on most items. New subscriber here and I really enjoy watching your videos. 🙂
Don't buy your children a toy everytime you go to the store. I had friends that never left the house without bringing home a toy. Also don't buy toys just because it is the new things being offered. They have birthdays and Christmas/seasonal times, give them the pleasure of waiting for something. It is so much more appreciated.
I always go to several grocery stores & I have a thrifted cooler in my car to put froz foods in . I’ve noted no one saying to have a cooler in their car
Such great points. Especially watching the prices. I try to do self checkout now bc that is the easiest way for me to monitor the prices and make sure I don’t over pay.
Thank you for the reminder to check our receipts! I felt my total was higher than it should have been. Your words to look back over my receipt rang in my mind. I got to the car, sat and looked over my receipt. Sure enough I was over charged over $15! (6 different items, one of them charged twice for) I went right back in and pointed out the mistakes. I got my money back . Thank you! You are reminding us to do the things we need to do to be responsible and good stewards over the money the Lord had blessed us with for our families.
(Judy VanderPloeg) I have scheduling issues and I sometimes have to take a young boy that I occasionally watch, shopping with me. The way I combat the begging, is to give him a job. I taught him how to read shelf labels, so I give him a list of items that he is responsible for finding the best deal on. It makes math more interesting for him and keeps us both sharp on marketing tricks. I usually find deals on items that, when we get back to my house, we use to make homemade treats. We have basically made learning two life skills into a game. I'm teaching him to shop wisely and also teaching him to cook and bake simple meals and treats we enjoy.
I was shopping at my local grocery store & saw chicken breasts in the front of the store, on sale for $1.48 per pound, so I grabbed a package. When I got to the back of the store, I saw the same chicken, a different brand, but same cut exc. for .98 cents per pound! I got 2 packages for the same price as the 1 I had on my cart!
Great tips! I am going to start treating shopping as a business like you said...I never thought of it that way. I do have a list when the shop but I pick and choose what I really need.
People would be so much better off if they just listened to you two! I was raised to keep certain things on hand always (stockpile) and pull meals from what you have. You can still ask for family suggestions and indulge in cravings. You can still "shop your shelves" and cook what you feel like in the moment. Thanks for your videos!
Valentines? That's on 14th February here in the UK...you had me so confused! Sensible advice on price checking and shopping the sales...I write a whole months menu out and plan around my freezer/pantry so I know if i need to pick anything up. It saves me so much time and stops food waste...and i stick to my budget too :)
Toys were a luxury and only given toys at birthday and Christmas. I check apps too. I brought hay fever tablets on a deal online as so much cheaper in store. The tablets were £15 in store but £6 on line. I stocked up deodorant which is now like £4 per one.
If i buy meat or other food items i will vacumm pack them and date them on the bag and store in freezer or on the shelf to help with keeping the tiem longer.
My son stopped throwing a fit in the store when I went to the store and bought a large piece of poster board. I folded it in squares until it fit in my purse, then I punched two holes in the top, I used old string threw the holes AND then I wrote on the entire poster board WATCH ME THROW A FIT PLEASE LAUGH BECAUSE MY MOM WONT LET ME HAVE EVERYTHING I WANT! I unfolded the poster board and tied it to the front of my grocery basket and BAMM when everyone laughed my son stop throwing fits
I don't always check my receipt but the other day I did. Good thing. There was an item on my receipt for $23.98. I didn't buy anything for that price!. I went to the internet to look up the item and no matter how I put it in it would not come up. I called the store and asked them to tell me what it was. They could not get it to come up. The lady asked me to bring in my receipt. I did and the young man that waited on me got it to come up. It was bakery cup cakes. I have never purchased bakery cupcakes from Walmart!!. They didn't argue. They graciously refunded my money. I was ready for an argument but was really pleased not to have one.
We do bulk shopping and menus are based on what we buy and have in pantry. I always look for dates on everything. I freeze leftovers to eat later. Also, vacuum seal a lot of foods. ALDI'S has cleanest mustard. We don't buy any sodas or energy waters. Drink tea, water and coffee.
I do that, I go to the store find what is on sale premade. Go home and I eat it. Today I woke up found a can of chilli in the yard cleaned it up and I cut up a corn dog and slices of cheese.
I "over bought" my needs of meat each week by buying what was on sale, until I had an abundance of hot dogs, pork chops, hamburger meat, pork roast, sausages, beef roast, ribs, chicken thighs, etc so that I didn't have to do anything extraordinary, when some meat was on sale, I just replenished my stash. I had favorites (turkey thighs) that I always kept 3-4 extra packs in the freezer, but I also had just "ok" things too, to fill in the holes too. Even though I am by myself now, I still do that, it's ingrained now. Once the deli counter was having an unadvertised sale on something they don't generally carry - loose hot dogs. It was a fantastic sale, on the brand I liked, just not the size. I like a 1/4 lb dog, but this sale was on the regular size. I bought 10 lbs, took them home, packaged them in the amount we would eat at one time, and froze them. And I ate them. The taste was the same, just a size difference. And I always put away the money I didn't spend each week in a specific place in my wallet, just to use for such sales. I couldn't afford to bring "extra" money with me, but I always had "extra" by not necessarily spending it all in past shopping trips.
My yesterday: I was "dying" for a roast beef sub from the local pizza parlor. Went online to their website and the price was $12 (PLUS state sales tax and PLUS a tip making the true price $16.63.) Lost my craving pretty fast!! Went to my local grocery and came home with a half ham, weighing just under 10 pounds, for $19 including sales tax, no tip! Previously frozen so that's Thanksgiving dinner. Turkey will have to wait for a good sale and then that will be Christmas dinner! Jill was talking about saving $50. Remember that the $50 saved means you probably had to earn $75. During my working years, my withholding for federal and state income taxes and S.S. averaged 33%. $75 less 1/3 = $50. Then, too, consider the gasoline if you have to drive very far.
I watch my receipts. At three different grocery stores I use, all have errors in their favor on about 1 out of 5 receipts. And I do take pics of clearance items.
The reason I “buy whatever I want” now is that my family of four lives in a homeless shelter. We can’t cook anything but we can use a microwave. We can’t store anything more than 2 one gallon ziploc bags in a fridge that they never make sure stays shut. So you bet your butt I’m walking to the grocery store daily or every two days to get food for my kids😂
That's how I shop all the time. Come to Trader Joe's or any other store and grab what I want to try. No debt, no credit. Nothing wrong with this method 🙈😆
Watch out for Kroger and clearance items. I have reoccurring problems with them not completely blocking the original barcode and I therefore get the scanned original price instead of the discount price.
The closest store to my house is called Shaw's (i live in New Hampshire) and it's expensive. Every Friday, when their circulars come out, I clip the electronic coupons before I walk into the store. They have fresh salmon for $8 a pound (which is a great price for salmon) this week with coupon. Tomorrow's dinner. I love Walmart for the basics.
Agree that this happens to me a LOT at Kroger. I even had a checkout clerk debate with me about the 50% off reduced price sticker on a half pie. He said the price listed on the item was already half off. I tried to explain to him it was half off that price but he insisted. I didn’t want to hold up the line so told him to put it back.
I am 60 and left my career because it became too physically demanding with my arthritis, now trying to figure out what to do next , I only really knew 1 career , now living on 1 income , husbands , which just covers everything, with only a little left over ( I know some people are worse off of course) I told my husband we can get a bit more wiggle room if I can get our groceries down ,
I have been living on a dime for over 30+year's. People say it can't be done, lol. God blesses us all with everything we need and many of our wants but he does it in his time. Lord help the world that thinks a person can't live on bare minimum because there is a difference between a NEED AND WANT
hahaha,.....i learned a LONG time ago, i NEVER take the kids grocery shopping.....the problem is me, i don't like to say no when they are so exited, so i just don't take them lol.....saves me tons hahah, i also don't take them for any kind of shopping, then i don't feel bad and the kids do not realize that theres anything they feel like they are missing out, however, when i do have to stop in with the kids, i have gotten better at saying no now that i have so many kiddies lol.....
Who wants to shop everyday? I like to have the variety with anything we want without leaving the house. Build up enough in sales to can a full batch here and there.
What kind of milk could I buy, that won't bother my dairy intolerance.? Or is there anything I can buy, I like to have cereal with fruit sometimes, even for supper. But I really cannot drink regular milk anymore. Any ideas, Please.
It's funny you keep mentioning oatmeal. There are just two of us and I buy 50 pounds at a time. It doesn't go bad and we don't get bugs. We eat it most breakfasts and go through it in around six months. This past one I got was $40, so 80¢ a pound. The good thing for me is I don't have to constantly remember to buy it. Obviously not everyone is like us. I no longer just grab a bunch of bananas, I get two - ones that are ripe and some that are green and I go with just the number I want.
At my age I’ve gotten shopping down to a science, in part but reading your books and watching your videos for 7+ years. One of our local stores (a div. of Roundy’s) has fruit/veg, meat, bakery, and misc. clearance sections that I regularly check, and I really enjoy it!
I need to have somewhat of an idea of what we will be eating for dinner but if something is on sale, I will go for it instead. My hubby has dietary restrictions so I am always on the hunt for sales on protein and fresh veggies. Pretty simple in our house but what we eat is not on the cheap side. I refuse to pay some of the prices. I saw a bunch of broccoli (it was probably organic) for $7. People in the store might have heard me say "Get out of Here". I can buy a head of broccoli, cut it and steam it for $2 or less. But the best one is I saw was swordfish at Wegman's for $44 a pound. (It's chain mostly in the East) I thought who the hell is buying that? WE have it every couple of weeks, I usually can get it for $15.99 a pound. So crazy.
When it is just you and you have a demanding job in the city buying daily is the best way…sorry it is a much different style of life than how you are living…added you often have work and reports to do..along with air travel etc.

Best advice ever! Treat one’s household budget and especially grocery shopping like a business!❤❤❤
Your right about the cashier be sure you have to watch or read your receipt before you leave.

Watch for digital coupon pricing too. If you do not have the app on your phone, you will not get the lower price.

Oats can be thrown in the frezzer for longer shelf life
One of the first words my kids learned how to spell was SALE.
So true we have to have our proof
In our area its gotten hard to find clearance items . Since co-vid our stores are stocking noticeably less .
