The reason is Matt Berry (actor who plays Lazlo) is a fucking phenomenal actor and has a wicked god sense for comedy/comedic timing. So much so that I’d say he is the funniest person on this the show. And it’s a VERY talented cast all around.
Matt Berry is incredible! Both with his music and his comedic acting. I do wonder why he seems to be under utilized in this show at large. Maybe I'm coming in with a bias since I'm such a fan of Toast of London.
Jackie Daytona is such a great character and episode. It creates a sub plot and completely takes the viewer into a micro world of a small town. Your explanation is perfect!
wow this is rly well explained ! i also felt like jackie daytona was such an interesting character and i couldnt explain it but this hit the nail on the head
Part of it, I think, is Matt Berry's way of saying the name, especially the Daytona bit. I don't know what it is but that delivery alone kills it. Then there is the name itself. It instantly reminded me of the stupid names Archer gives himself when he is going under-cover.
Ok thank god I wasn’t the only person who got attached to Jackie Daytona in that episode- its absolutely perfect as a stand alone episode and a great chance to see Matt do his thing. Its all in the name- Jackie Daytona- sounds like a legend
Also what makes this entire episode so successful is Mark Hamill as the episode's one-off "big bad" / anti-hero character. His part was so fucking funny and such a good foil to Matt Berry
Haha, the fantasy of running from your problems and living a simple life somewhere else. And volleyball. Lots of volleyball. Perfect montage for this episode with dancing and ass kicking. Plus, the delivery of “This is how everyone talks in Tucson, Arizoñia!”
The joke is that EVERY BARTENDER is basically a fucking vampire!!! Haha!!!! We hate the sun, we only come to life at night, we are successful by preying on the weaknesses of people that come out when the sun is down, etc. Bartenders are ALL ABOUT Jackie Daytona, because its both accurate and absurd at the same time!
We also tend to know a lot about what’s going on in the town/county due to the social nature of the job and after too long we do indeed get invested and involved in the local community. A lifetime ago when I was bartending I got really involved in the local art community and also helped with fundraising, recruiting artists for events, and other such. Was a really relatable character.
After seeing the newest episodes of season 3, I daresay that Lazlo retains the most humanity in the house. Sex obsessed and totally perverted, sure. But he's the only one who seems to want to form genuine friendships.
There are two things missing from this essay on why this episode is so good. One is that every joke lands in my opinion. the other is, of course, Mark Freaking Hamill.
dude this is blowing me away. im from a major cityt in california, but lived all over the country for mining jobs. i lived in a lot of smol towns, i didnt bat an eye at why i loved this episode but its 100% the background characters and smol town. its wild to me that i didnt realize this until this very second. i knew i fucking loved the jackie daytona bit but the depth of it is good af.
I’m just a regular human bartender that serves regular human alcohol beer, please stop telling these lies about me before I drain and eat you, I mean before I sue you...
Really great breakdown of the show and this episode in particular. Sometimes it is easy to blow past the intricacies of a joke or to get lost in the laughs of the comedy that really resonated in the first place
I think the reason this episode works so well is the sincerity. They could have written Jackie as only pretending to care about the town, but the fact that he actually loves living there and participating in the volleyball team's success makes it all more engaging to watch. For an episode about a guy running away from a debt, there's a surprising lack of cynicism.
Every point made in this video I agree with. But i think the greatest part of the episode and the character is the name. Jackie Daytona normal human bartender will always get a chuckle out of me.
I wasn't paying attention and this was just playing in the background, and I actually perked up and started paying attention when I heard the name "Jackie Daytona" 😂 it straight up made me go "wait hold up thats fucking hilarious"
I haven't watched the show in a minute, but are we sure Nandor was a soldier FOR the Ottoman Empire? the character is supposed to be a take on Vlad the Impaler, being one of the earlier known inspirations for Dracula and vampires as a whole. I think the Ottoman Empire was the army that conquered Romania (modern day region Vlad ruled) and ultimately responsible for his death. or maybe im an over-analytical history nerd idk
Nadja refers to him in the one episode “Turkish Frank Zappa”. He also is from a country that no longer exists which is neither I forget the name of the country sadly. He is not supposed to represent Vlad tho, just a Conqueror or warrior vampire
@@Dontpostdumbcomments my man, look up vampire lore. the version of vampire we get on screen is absolutely a send up of a Vlad the impaler type vampire. the show is satirizing things from long long ago. like, ok. maybe the character nandor isn't himself Vlad the impaler himself, but the character is definitely modeled after the vampire lore that came with the Vlad the impaler image.
What I want to know is...did Lazlo take his homeland soil with him? A recent episode in the new season explained that vampires need to take a bit of their homeland soil if they are travelling or they won't be able to function properly (can't sleep, become weak and lose powers etc..) Yet I can't remember if that came up when Lazlo ran away to Pennsylvania. Unless it's dependant on other factors...
Trust me bro .. I live a lonely life and I am a person that likes to be alone but there will always be a hole of human commodity so be grateful for the people you have in your life. I have my mom my sister and my son. Very small circle but remember you need to cut people off if they aren't for your growth and don't want your help to get them to grow.
I have a theory that Colin is a fourth wall break. We found out he can feed on people through the internet so why not recordings? What if the whole reason the documentary is being made is because Colin convinced a group of people to do it so he can feed off the viewers?
It explains why I felt nothing watching this episode, and was for the first time (with this show) skipping whole scenes. I've never been to US and am a European. It's all small_town_building_community joys made no sense to me. I was seriously concerned that the whole show would go this route, but thankfully no, it didn't. Thank you for this opportunity to understand and be able to validate your point of view!
@@LucasDeRuyter If eastern european small towns more familiar would be portrayed in this show it would be extremely exciting :) I still have a chance to see it, if Nadja someday travels back to her snake island village
I'm gonna pull a Lazlo Cravensworth in a year, up root myself away from this tiny ass hole in the wall farming community that only cares about high school football, then move to another state. By the time I leave, I would've called this tiny ass farming community home for just over 20 years. I don't give a shit that I grew up here, I want a fresh start far away from my judgemental hometown. People are constantly telling me that I should wait until I'm 22, but I don't want to wait that long, I wanna get out while I still can. Worried that if I stick around for too long, I'll meet someone who won't want to move over 1,000 miles away. I've lived in the same place for too fucking long, and I want to live where nobody knows what I was like as a child, or even knows my name. I'll be happier some place else.
Small town dive bars aren't exactly a place to look for accurate cocktails, but he has had centuries to practice if he happened to pick it up at some point
Honestly, this episode missed the mark for me. I get what you mean by being interested in what a vampire would do if they decided to be normal, that premise alone could be a darkly funny show. I loved matt Berry for years, same with Mark hamill. However, it kind of took me out of the shows rhythm. I'd easily skip this episode without thinking even tho I think both characters are good. Just think a different direction would have been better. Glad u like the show!

Aw no!... they are all funny but I find Nadia and Nandor the funniest though. (each to their own I guess 😁)
I've been a fan of Matt Berry since Garth Marhegi's Dark Place came to the states on Adult Swim.
Matt Berry is incredible! Both with his music and his comedic acting. I do wonder why he seems to be under utilized in this show at large. Maybe I'm coming in with a bias since I'm such a fan of Toast of London.

This is an incredibly analysis of each character’s purpose in the franchise. What a beautiful, simple, and effective video.

This is the only show where I equally love every single character in this show, even the one offs.

Kayvan's last name is Novak, and Harve'y last name is pronounced "Gee-yen" with the "y" as in "yes" and the accent on the e. just some tiny details :)
