I'm glad you didn't drag Super Paper Mario too bad. It wasn't like its predecessors, sure, but it's a great game in its own right. Sticker Star, meanwhile, was about as far you can fall from grace as one could get, and everything since has been them crawling up, trying to reach anything worth playing.
SPM is an okay game, but nothing more.
Probably the best take on PM that I've heard in a while.
It still has more of a story and rpg elements than those retcons. (The new games)
SPM’s storytelling is so good that it almost got a movie. As a more platform oriented enjoyer I didn’t really have a problem with the mechanics. The only inherent problem that irks me is the lack of depth in the pixel party members as they were given a personality and then proceed to turn into spineless husks the rest of the game

I personally think that SPM and TTYD are the best Paper Mario games. SPM because turn-based combat gets a bit annoying when you fall into a well and get accosted by 6 enemies at the same time, forcing you into back-to-back battles, and when you can fight in real-time it feels smoother. I do like TTYD because it's a good game. Maybe I'm biased because it was the Paper Mario I grew up with (and my first exposure to the PM series as a whole) but I do agree it's a good game.
Though the real-time battles and *very VERY* meaningful story of SPM will always have me praising it
At this point, we won't even need "Chuggaa Tears Origami King a New One" because of this. ...Even though it would still be nice.

To be fair, Nintendo did approach Square to develop Paper Mario (then known as Super Mario RPG 2) but they were busy with FF7 so they said no and *that's* when Nintendo got IntSys to develop the game.

Honestly I'm baffled that even miyamoto found sticker star boring and the lead dev was apparently devastated at the fact the game was badly received....and yet they still keep trying to force the disposable item battle system and same toad based character filler twice now...at this point I dont think they will ever learn

the origami king is like that one annoying yet kind sibling, you cannot hate them but they still are frustrating, I have not played the original two paper mario games but I have seen what people think. yes we have every right to be frustrated by nintendo doing this but they don't really have a choice from what they have said, and the game in like a middle ground to me, like it has a mix of both games in it. the ally system being region tied or story tied is annoying but makes sense, the ring system is annoying yet reminds me of thousand year door mechanics, and the weapons having durability instead of being one time use is close to them being permanently there since you will have enough coins after a while to get a set of the best weapons. it is like nintendo tried making the game an apology but tried to stick to the things modern kids know aswell.

I had mixed feelings throughout Origami King. There were so many moments I got this giddy little "Okay, origami king, I see what you're doing here" but a lot of it felt meh. Except for Bowser's castle. The cutouts freaked me out, and Mr Scissors actually felt tense. Then the ball dropped and I started getting really upset. I just wanted to end it
love the editing here, I think since the mario and luigi series is over, and that was main reason the last three games were the way they were. There could be hope for a more faithful and original paper mario

There's nothing wrong with people enjoying a game you don't like, nobody needs to "accept" anything. Everyone can have their opinion. I love this game. Hell, I enjoyed Sticker Star fine enough. I'm not _wrong_ for liking these games.

I'm talking on an objective manner, since Origami King usually gets pity in an attempt to overlook its flaws. Yes, the game looks and sounds decent enough, but that doesn't make it automatically good. It just means it has a high production level.

Honestly, Origami King is the first Paper Mario game I've played extensively, and by far my favourite part is exploring and solving all the little puzzles and whatnot. I'm generally not an RPG guy and I'm not crazy about RPG elements, but the world of TOK is just really cool and I like exploring it.
I'm glad you brought out how much of a drab overworld exploration became in this game AND the previous two. Color Splash constantly had me wanting I could do anything other than hammer and paint things. And the cutout thing, I guess??

Yeah, let's face it, when the open-world presentation and the story are about the only things going heavily in the game's favor, it's hard to really call it good by a game standpoint. They were so close to getting this right, and if they hadn't stuck to this stubborn mentality that Paper Mario can't be an RPG anymore and maybe the arms thing was the only gimmick they felt like adding and they didn't feel the need to completely revamp the combat, this actually could have been amazing. I was even thinking if they don't want to bring EXP back, maybe have random encounters come with a reward of special red/blue coins that can be exchanged in gyms spread out across the world where Mario can pay to use the machines and increase his stats. Like, one could be for HP, another could be for physical attack, another could be for defense, and if they decide to bring this back, have one for FP. And for each upgrade, the price goes up by a decent amount.

If I must be fair, then it should be mentioned that I never really enjoyed battling the less important foes in the original Paper Mario games. Knowing that the bosses give more EXP when you're low level and having Amazy Dayzees be as super fast way to catch up mid-game, I never thought IS was good at designing a RPG battle system outside the boss fights and Pits.
In the case of Super Paper Mario, I like that it's not turn-based. You get through battles faster and can consecutively stomp on bosses if you get good. There's no huge bonus for "timed attacks" except that sometime shaking the remote for its sad EXP bonus can be a good way to help less skilled players such as myself get those consecutive jumps.
You can see with both Paper Mario and Fire Emblem, developed by IS, that there's always a back and forth debate between if there should be more or less story. I'm in the more camp! Having more story doesn't mean that the gameplay has to be sacrificed, we just haven't seen many Nintendo games that get that good gameplay and good story simultaneously.

Even though the battle system in Origami King is very mid, this is still my 2nd favorite Paper Mario game (favorite is the Original) I didn't mind the story and the worlds were fun to explore, but what really stole the show, like you said, was the spectacle. The soundtrack is excellent and it's one of the most visually beautiful games I've ever played. I don't find it all too replayable, but when I played it, I had a good time.
It's extremely depressing how Nintendo and IS are holding this series from reaching its full potential. I still like the game, but man what it could have been.

@@golferninja I loved TTYD, as any normal person would. Although I strongly prefer 64 when it comes to replay value as TTYD's chapter pacing isn't its strong point (people like to bring up chapter 4 but the entire game just doesnt have as good pacing as 64 does imo)
Still an easy 10/10 for me. I'd personally rate four of the Paper Marios as a 10. 64 for the best gameplay, TTYD a great mix of fun characters and gameplay, Super with it's great characters/story and fun settings. Origami King for it's presentation. Music slaps in all of them. I thought SS was okay because I grew up with it and I haven't played CS.

I really liked how you were honest about the game and I'm so sorry if people were somewhat toxic toward your opinion. Although I never played the game before, I like it because of its storytelling, design, music, and characters. I feel like this game is going in the right direction for the paper Mario franchise because sticker star and color splash were god-awful. I agree that the battle system is kinda iffy, but I was absolutely shocked that they somewhat had you have partners. Even if they didn't stay that long, at least each of them had their own personality. The only reason why I love this game so much is rather for a sad reason. 2020 was a really bad year for me and the game helped me keep my creativity alive and I used to draw a ton of fanart for the game (cringe ikk but wow the characters kept me sane during that year lmao)
Anyways keep up the good work with your content. Hopefully one day there will be another game like TTYD or even the Mario and Luigi series if they find another rpg company to partner with ^^;

Origami king was fun at first and when i used a couple glitches to bring partners where they aren't supposed to be. Bobby to the yellow streamer and Prof Toad to the green streamer. I think I'll try to 100% complete the game, but the battles and re-visiting previous maps after beating the final boss aren't even fun anymore.
But here's one thing i think everyone can agree with: Paper Mario's music is amazing

I think Origami King was a HUGE improvement over Sticker Star and Color Splash, its personally my 3rd favorite in the series behind Super and TTYD, like I still prefer the Mario & Luigi series and now its dead so we aren't really getting Mario RPGs anymore unless you count Mario + Rabbids, but great job on the vid, very good editing and commentary, I would love to see more!

I actually agree with you on most of this, I’ve watched the game being played cause I couldn’t be bothered to actually buy it but it suffers hard in a lot of these areas and it makes me realize how all these companies are moving away from rpgs entirely. Square hasn’t had a turned based one since ff13 and dream team was the last true turn based rpg nintendo had besides pokemon. So I’m just saddened that besides nintendo the gaming industry seems to want to leave the rpg turnbased system behind.

Between the Mario RPG remake, TTYD remake, and an entirely new Mario & Luigi game, I think they finally realized that the people want and need actual Mario RPGs again
Meaning, I don't think it's too unreasonable to either want or expect a TTYD styled Paper Mario on the Switch 2, partners, an actual story and progression and all
I'd disagree with Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario not having deeper stories. Thousand Year Door has TEC-XX who has you contemplating whether or not an AI can be a person, or feel love. You also get a twist in that Grodus, the bad guy you are expecting the whole game ends up being not being the main villain. Having to fight a possessed Peach is something very new. Super Paper Mario covers topics of abuse, prejudice, and fatalism among others.
I know you say you like the spectacle in TOK, but to me while the world is more colorful it has never looked so lifeless and soulless than it does now. The only reason I filled in those holes with confetti is because the world looks even more horrendous if you don't. There is only one scene where I thought "wow that genuinely looks pretty good", and that was when Olivia used the Water Vellumental* power to fill the lake. It also happens to be one of the only parts of the game where they drop the everything is paper obsession for a moment.
There is one point I keep seeing people miss when it comes to criticism of TOK(or as I prefer call it Paper Mario Bored of the Rings), and that is the spite it has towards classic Paper Mario and its fans. The motivation of the main villain is purely him being a mouthpiece that Tanabe can put the words of critics into. Tanabe has now portrayed fans of the classic games as petulant children that also happen to be genocidal maniacs. Ollie's entire argument is that there are "too many Toads", and that "they all look alike". Sticker Star shares some of this in that the only references to classic characters are in a literal garbage dump.
*I know Japan is big on puns, but Tanabe takes it to a whole new level. Vellum is a type of paper made from animal skin, and "turn based combat" seriously?

Gotta disagree on the stories not being deep. Sure, they weren't as deep as your typical jrpg but in terms of mario they were the deepest stories we got out there and it all culminated to one of the best mario stories with super paper mario which showed a tale of love and how it drove someone to the lengths of nearly destroying the world. it's a shame things went downhill from there.

Strange, I enjoyed Origami King and thought it was very much worth my time.
Honestly, on my totem pole, Origami King is 3rd from the bottom. Not as good as the first three (Of which I shall not explain the order), but MUCH better than Color Splash and Sticker Star.

A minute in but I'm gonna share my quick thoughts about this game after playing through it and screensharing my one and only playthrough to a friend of mine that only played SPM but is aware of the series going on a sharp downhill Sticker Star onwards.
Origami King is probably the first game I felt this much mixed feelings towards. There's stuff I liked but also so much I absolutely couldn't stand...

the thing with timed hits is it doesnt matter the numeric value, because all math and numbers are relative. headshots in fps games are a thing people still care about, no matter how big the number, because of the percentage increase. I've been a fan of it since I was a child, where I replayed it, Paper Mario 64, and Super over and over again. I always hoped for a new game that took Super's story, combined it with TTYD's tight combat system and 64's whimsical music and settings to create the ultimate Paper Mario experience.
But I guess now, that will never happen. This series's current direction in game lineup is one reason I have stopped supporting Nintendo.
Is being unsatisfied with a franchise's direction a crime? Do you think that TTYD fans want to hate the current Paper Mario? Because most of them don't, they gave TOK a chance, but are just legitimately sad that a franchise they once held so highly as Nintendo's juggernaut of a console seller is now just a joke-filled Disney fastpass of an "RPG."

The most op strategy in sticker star, color splash and origami king is to run away from random encounters

It's not coming. I've given up hope on them actually making a worthwhile paper mario game and I'm just looking elsewhere now. They just don't want to do it. Unfortunately for them there are developers out there who do want to do it.
That's why it's best to boycott Origami King and buy Bug Fables.
To me, a Paper Mario is the original N64 game, TTYD, SPM, or any number of "Paper Mario-likes" like _Bug Fables_.
Origami king makes you 100 percent for the best ending that's why I think it sucks
I hate when games do that. Just make it an awesome super boss as the 100% reward don't lock the ending behind it.

While I enjoy the music and visuals in this game, and I've never had much trouble with battles and input, I do recognize that there are some:
1. It was a terrible decision to kill off both Olivia, and Bobby (who you spend not much time with at all)
2. To have Olly's motivation kind of poke at those who dislike the toad epidemic, I think it probably made a few people upset.
3. The size of the world, and Mario's max walking speed make even going to a museum pipe take a while, not too long, but still kinda bothersome (especially when if I'm remembering correctly, last 2 games let you straight up leave to the map without going to the entrance of the level). I feel like some kind of fast travel item (like a folded up return pipe), or more pipes similar to the one leading from the origami throne room to the castle entrance could've benefitted this game.
4. Vellumental powers can be used in regular battles and basically skips a wave for you if the enemy holding the panel is killed, but it's random and very rare where they appear (I think). This definitely could've been a manually activated ability instead.
5. So if I remember correctly, winning a battle even after cheering gives you some of your money back, a perfect bonus should only be if Mario defeats his foes without getting hit *or cheering.*
6. This whole "we can't change character design" stuff is stupid, what exactly did the development of Sticker Star do to prevent modification of characters? Why didn't Tanabe tell why? Is he intentionally trying to split the PM fandom in half?
7. Xp was apparently considered for this game, but just not implemented for whatever reason.

Y'know, I really clicked on this video expecting to hear the same ol' "not TTYD or SPM = bad game" argument but wow you actually cooked with this one. Mentioned a lot of personal gripes I have with the game too and explained how fundamentally flawed they are for an RPG game, but honestly, I can't blame Intelligent Systems for how it is these days.
It seems like they're doing their best to create a deep and original plot (with the whole broken family concept and life and death in the paper world) with interesting mechanics (1000F Arms and Vellumentals probably being the modern answer to the curses from TTYD) but simply cannot do so due to Nintendo wanting all non-mainline Mario games as "Mickey Mouse simple and -clean- easy" as possible, thus leaving behind a skeleton of what once was. I just wish that the Big N could have more fun with the greater Mario series nowadays like they did in the 00s. And that doesn't just go for Paper Mario, this extends to other spinoffs like the Mario Party and especially the Sports games too (idk why Mario+Rabbids specifically gets to take creative liberties, but I'm so glad it does). Like I can understand that they want to keep the world and franchise recognisable for newcomers, but the wackiness and unpredictability is what made it so popular in the first place. They should try and make compromises for it every now and then rather than just take it all away outside of the mainline games and one RPG spinoff series.
I think I'm gonna stop typing now because what is essentially 50 seconds worth of my thoughts shouldn't be able to produce a paragraph this big, but you get the idea.

ALSO Super was never meant to be anything more than just another thing for the Gamecube. don't give it flak for something that was Sticker Star's fault. we got Dimentio from Super, and that was enough.
Well said! And after so many years of good fictional media being produced, sure villains with more intrigue than Dimentio have popped up, but Dimentio will forever be the Mario series' #1 evil genius and one of my fave characters of all time!!!
