    It really looks like a lot of sharpness was applied to the Blu-ray

    Great video, seeing the different formats does a great job at showing us the evolution of hone video. Of course all that's missing is Beta & Laserdisc (at least the other huge formats).
    As for the 4K, I have both the double Steelbook you have & the Ultimate Edition with the 8 disc. The newer one is certainly better in terms of picture quality not a night/day difference but still worth the upgrade.
    Unfortunately that box set is nearly 500 dollars, so I'm glad I got it.
    They did re-release the main disc so if you want a better picture get those but if you want all those bonus features it'll cost you as I doubt they're ever re-rekeasing those bonus discs.
    There's the Workprint cut of the first film with a commentary track, TV cuts for both Parts 1 & 2 plus more

    I’m fascinated by studying older VHS movies in the Pan and Scan format. It’s so intriguing to analyze the edits and see how scenes were adapted for smaller screens. On another note, if you can splurge on the Ghostbusters 4K Ghost Trap Box Set, it’s absolutely worth it for a Ghostbuster fan.

      Never mind, just checked the pricing for that box set is over $300...not worth it if you have the movies already.

      @Ectoviolence  5 дней назад +3

      Yeah I wanted it but didn’t have the money, 300 is too much for special features and alternative cuts of something I already have. My brother has it though, I could convince him to watch some of that stuff with me sometime.

      @@Ectoviolence Yeah I bought it when it came out & that is a huge price to swallow. I will say though that the extras it comes with are crazy. Different edits, Audition footage, 4K, Blu-ray , digital & the book are awesome.
      I am glad I have it but I don't think I would pay 300 for it. I have yet to find it on VHS in the wild.

    I just re-watched this movie again in October on my 1080p TV, switching back and forth between the original DVD and the Blu-ray, and was surprised to find that I actually preferred the DVD. The Blu-ray obviously has more clarity, but it seems a bit too bright for my taste.

    • @Ectoviolence

      I can see that, the dvd scan I did seems a little darker than the scan looks through a tv, I bet that did would look good on a 4k tv.

    Great video. Ghostbusters has always managed to shine on its home video release over the years. I don't have the VHS anymore as I picked up an immaculate 1989 Laserdisc, then the DVD from '99 and finally (for me anyways) the Mastered in 4k Sony Blu-ray. I might pick up a 4k one day but it would need to be cheaper. But the MI4k release from 2013 is a stunning 1080p transfer as it boasts the Xvycc Deep Colour which is wider than the standard rec 709 used in the comparison and closes the gap (I'd imagine) between the 4k and the upscaled wider colour space 2k BD.
    But great to see all these various editions this way and the P&S is fascinating to see again as have only seen the wide screen for the last 35 years. Yikes!!! 😂

      Internet Archive had one of the TV cuts and the work print plus a fan edit that has a lot of deleted scenes and alternate takes. It's about 2 and a half hours long.

    The tape has seen better days. I think the jump from VHS to DVD was more impressive, however totally agreed 1080p BD to 4k BD isn't all that big and unfortunately a lot of older moves are getting trash transfers for the 4K discs.

    I have the criterion first ever widescreen laserdisc, the dvd gift set with both films, the anniversary steelbook with both films on BD/4K & the 4K ghost trap collection
    Each one sadly has features exclusive to them the others don’t have since Sony hates ghostbusters fans. The LD has some storyboards & pictures exclusive, the dvd set has an exclusive booklet while the dvds are the special edition versions that fix the effects, the steelbook has some ghostbusters tv show features & episodes and lastly the ghost trap has so much exclusive content it’s scary.
    The 4K you use should be the old bad transfer unless the discs you got have the original stereo audio it’s the old transfer that was basically a poor port of the the 4K remastered blu-rays. The criterion LD has an exclusive audio mix that sounds the best the film has ever sounded even with the restored stereo audio on the 4K.
    As for the transfer all of them from the set I have look authentic except for the dvd that is the edited cut.
    From what I understand your VHS & DvD have the same base transfer while the blu-rays & 4ks use the base transfer as well. The difference in color is due to the poor HDR grade that this original 4K got.
    Sony tends to release 4ks twice as they usually bitch the original release with the steelbooks only being available with the fixed transfer; oddly for ghostbusters the new individual 4ks & ghost trap have the fixed transfer while the steelbook set used the original version which is worse.
    Bram stokers Dracula & the mask of Zorro are 2 recent Sony 4K steelbooks I had to buy for the fixed transfers

    @squirreland 5 дней назад +1

    Honestly, in this comparison. I'd prefer the DVD version all the way. The colors seem right, there is dark contrasts where there should be. To me, the Blu-ray and 4K seem to be way too washed out and every scene seems to way too bright, and the colors are too neon. But to each there own, it was neat seeing all 4 versions side by side.

    The pan and scan on the 1999 vhs is offensive. You will literally get motion sickness, because the camera NEVER STOPS moving. Also, the 1999 dvd color timing is considered closet to fhe original film print color

    • @mistermoo7602

      @@Ectoviolence I have a feeling they meant the colors not the sharpness. I know for sure the Jurassic Park 35mm scan looks a bit more "warm" and less vibrant than the blu-ray and 4k.
      I do think many companies try to pull as much color as they can out of the image, and I don't mind it for the most part. But I do think about how the look of a tungsten or mercury bulb shining through the film strip looks compared to the digital master. I think often times restorations are more vibrant than the original: and that does mean it's slightly different. I agree this 4k feels natural.

    • @UnconformedMediaYT
      @UnconformedMediaYT 4 дня назад +2

      @mistermoo7602 that's exactly what I'm referring to. It's the lighting texture and color grading. New York City in 1984 looked dingy, and the movie's overcast daytime scenes reflected that. The basement of the library was also dark, thus the small, dim overhead lights and the desk lamp. Overall, the movie was a darker, warmer tone. The Blu-ray and 4K releases are too bright and colorful. As cool as that can look, it doesn't match the tones we got in the theater. It was one of the most memorable theater experiences of my life, so I remember it very well.

    • @Thecatdrums3
      @Thecatdrums3 2 дня назад

      @@mistermoo7602In the case of Jurassic park that was a decision made by the director; Spielberg has altered all his films for rereleases; the original Laserdiscs, VHS, beta & DTS dvds are the last versions to retain the original audio & color grade. You can easily tell the changes made to Jurassic park as the cgi looks washed out as they artificially brightened the image. It’s why the famous scene of the long necks walking to the pond doesn’t match colors within the scene. The film can easily be changed as it has the color depth due to being shot on film but the computer effects where made for the original films look.
      Ghostbusters doesn’t have that issues as it was all shot on film and the film can be tweaked to the new color systems of each format.
      The 4K and blu-ray here show use the same scan it’s just the color spectrum of their respective formats that lead to the differences.

    • @Thecatdrums3
      @Thecatdrums3 2 дня назад

      @@UnconformedMediaYTyou should check out the new 4K master that restores the original stereo audio mix; I felt it looks like the criterion laserdisc which is still the best release for ghostbusters imo

    I own the Double pack DVD set. Looking at your comparison, I prefer the DVD version to be honest. The Blu Ray and 4K are too bright and VHS is pan and scan close up. Everyone has different tastes. I'm smelling Flavors and Tasting Colors again. Trippin the light fantastic.

    • @Thecatdrums3
      @Thecatdrums3 2 дня назад

      If it’s the double pack dvd with a booklet or was made after 2001 you have the special edition version that edited the effects to be more flawless like paramount did with the pet semetary releases on dvd -4K.

  • @gold333

    You have the wrong BR. 4K has blown out whites. Detail is missing. Best is BR. You need the 2015 BR which looks better than both the BR and 4K in your example. That same 2015 transfer was used in the 2019 Ultimate Edition BR.
