The 4k and Disney+ clips here look essentially the same, but with some changes to the colour balance and brightness/contrast. Reading the Empire magazine article indicated that this whole sequence had been redone, reverting more to the animatronic that they had made and using less CGI. That doesn't look the case here - I was expecting it to look very different and just more 'real'!

Ignoring the colour tints and saturation, what stands out is light sourcing for shadow placement. One way of putting this under more scrutiny is to compare both versions in black and white. Anything that looks bad in black and white, will look far worse in colour. By raising the lumination, it reduces bad shadow effects, which in turn will affect the colour vibrancy. This appears to be one of the things that has been has been done The brain does not really like multiple light sources, which is usually seen in bad cut and paste photoshop edits. You instinctively know when something does not look right.

Good video, I was wondering how different the versions are, I seen it in the cinema and the whole Rook part I found too distracting with the kinda shit looking cgi but watched it again on Disney+ and thought at the time they tweaked it slightly, I have the dvd HD version but haven’t got round to watching that but yea slight difference, I have the Alien Xenomorph Origins fan page on Facebook and the Rook part gets a lot of heat from fans so I was curious is this would make it better for the ones that hate it.. (liked and subscribed)

The CG still looks like sh@t!

There were so many problems with this movie that badly fixing the crappy Ian Holm CG isn't going to help.

The dvd has more warmth from what you captured, I think a good balance would be the warmer colours of the dvd with the clarity of the 4k.

More than how it looks in any given frame, the thing that made it look bad in the theater was the mouth movement.

Why is it terrible cgi? It does look a hit silly but for me it works well, i mean its a robot, so i guess it's supposed to look weird or twitchy

You may need to calibrate your TV settings. Most of the time general public presume calibration is a global setting adjustment. But it is actually per Input & per Signal. Meaning for each HDMI input you need to adjust for 1080p or lower video and 2160 with or without HDR video feed.

It happens all the time I guess. There were upgrades to INFINITY WAR from the theatrical cut as well I remember reading about. Studios need these films by release date, so sometimes they aren't truly finished until home media or streaming.

Don’t think either of these are the re-worked version. I’d heard they’d removed much of the CG and had more of the Ian Holm puppet in shot? Releases on 15th Jan.

Maybe he should have fixed the dialog as well. While the movie is decently filmed with mostly great sound-stage and effects (except the fake looking CGI alien blood floating in the corridor), there are far too many sound bites and references to the previous movies. It ruined the story for me. BTW... I own the 4K Apple TV streamed version and it also has a slight yellowish cast... to me anyways.

Downloaded the movie from YT, and it looks like like the 4K, no like the D+ crap.

Trying to get new people to watch old films by showing them 4K versions of these types off movies is giving them them a skewed perspective, one that wasn’t the original directors intention. Seeing this movie all bright and overly lit totally changes the mood and the feel of The Thing. We weren’t supposed to see everything in clear crystal clarity. There’s a reason there are award winning lighting men and cinematographers who work in the movie industry, their work sets the style and unique vision of the director. Seeing too much kills the scene. Shows too much of the animatronics. Reveals set and prop flaws. I saw this movie in the theatre and it was a dark movie and it was all the better for it. The whole premise relies on something lurking in the shadows. I can’t speak for John Carpenter, but I’d put good money down on him saying he’s not a fan of the 4K filters and brightening of his film. I think the people who worked on the 4K release have made a classic film look cheap and tacky.

I think the darkness in the DVD is visually more appealing and truer to life. Everything is brighter in the 4K, but has a horrible blue filter overlaid onto it in the day time shots.

Should of just showed the blu ray version which is better then the 4K but y’all love getting scammed 🤷‍♂️

I think it would be interesting to find a theatrical bootleg, my memory of the shoddy effect in theaterwas that the size of the head was smaller than it should've been to be proportional to the body and then the mouth and teeth motion were off. I'll have to watch the home release and see if I can notice, like you it was so noticeable in the theater.

It's not just the colour difference. At 4:16 particularly behind the actors' left shoulder, you can notice loss of detail and sharpness of the machine in the background. There are many other instances as well.

I saw the 4K and remember thinking it was too dark to really see the guy.

So they've just changed the colour temperature from Warm to Cool, I do that that with my remote a lot too...

I suspect they are both the same, the streaming might just boost colors. You need to compare illegal cinema recordings with Blu-ray. There should be more puppet use in new fixed version.

Great video. I enjoyed this movie. Saw it in Theaters. The whole Rook stuff never bothered me. The CG wasn't amazing, but there is also so much worse out there. With this comparison, it kind of really looks like they altered the color grading, which does look better than the orange tint the other version has going throughout. So did they actually really fix it in the sense of altering the CG as well?

got the steelbook. sucks it isn't HDR, and looks super grainy and bad. 4K disc sucks. Bluray i didn't notice much difference either. In theatres it was crystal clear and colors popped. Now the release? ugh. what happened? also the youtuber AVA Pop Culture can't take criticism. Claims they filmed the movie to watch it on a CRT.... right. like your channel though and what I've seen of it. Hope it grows

Me I could see the skin of rook Could be melted due to the acid from the alien you know from big chap And it could be like the skin is rubber because it kind of resembles human skin That they put on the synthetics I can definitely see that the face got little moves a little cause it kind of looks like it's made of rubber.

I watched it for a second time, purchase 4k Blu-Ray, for my parents to watch. It hit the Rook scenes, and immediately I thought “This doesn’t look as bad as I remember, if they changed it, it works”. Weirdly, even though my brain recognized it didn’t look as bad, I still couldn’t figure out or think of what was different. It looked the same, yet didn’t look as choppy/uncanny as the theatrical appearance looked.

to my eyes, they applied a different color timing to the scene and if you look closer, the left side of the actor's face has some shadows in it, whereas in the 4k they applied a localized brightness to evening out the brightness of the face...just my 2 cents...

4k content is always better through my 4k Roku stick than the native apps on my tv (xumo os) when streaming, even when using the same service. There are definitely some differences even with dolby vision on. Disc is usually better still.

I haven't branched out into 4K UHD, but it seems to me that they have more issues than I've heard of from both Blu-ray and DVD.

I sadly missed out on the limited $45 😢 by the time I heard about this it was gone.

my favorite version is the 1979 version. the 20s version is great too. but there are so many beautiful shots in herzog's version. im looking forward to seeing the new one tonight

I know screen shots dont come across exactly the same on RUclips but, your 4k looks like it has a 'cooler' colour grade to how my 4k looks. Try a warmer setting on your tv and it should help the look of the blue snow you're seeing.

I'm a collector and I've been collecting blu-rays since 2008. I started buying 4k's in 2018 and I have over 3,500 in my collection. I don't watch them movies when I receive them and put them on a shelf. I do fear that I could have issues with discs not working properly in the future. One example I can give is 'The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp'. I have this on bly ray steelbook and didn't watch watch it for aorund 10 years. When I finally watched it, the disc wouldn't play so I had to buy it again. Recently, I had an issue with the movie 'Rememory' on blu ray. There was some artifacting and freezing on a couple of occasions. I'm not sure if the issue is just with my disc or, the whole release.

From what I see here, it looks like they only changed the color timing of the scene. The dodgy CGI is still there - some of the worst I've ever seen, actually. No excuse for this level of shoddiness on a movie this big when there are amateurs out there who can deepfake something and make it look 10 times better than this.

Vhs version is the best.

There's a theory floating around that there's two different realities playing out in the movie. One is the real world and the other is the fictional reality that is coelescing inside Jack's head as he writes his novel - the novel which he is given inspiration for in the very first scene of the movie when he hears the story of the previous caretaker from Ullman. There's a video on RUclips that breaks down this theory pretty convincingly. You may never be able to watch the movie the same way after seeing it.
