      What you _really_ need is a strategy guide so you can whomp 'em! Quick tips:
      1. Try not to build on a harbour off the top of the game, unless you can also get frequently-rolling numbers on the resource that harbour needs
      2. Avoid building near the desert
      3. Always poll the other players for what they might have in their hands before unleashing a monopoly card
      4. Remember that sheep/ore/wheat is a great combo that can aid in a development card strategy. There are (i think) four 1-point cards in the development deck, plus two more if you get the Largest Army by using your soldier cards. Add that to the 2 points you begin the game with, and you're most of the way to 10 pts to win!

    2) in my turn play the dice...Can i play more than 2 or more development card at my turn ?
    Thank you your explanation helped a lot 👍

    • @NightsAroundaTable
      @NightsAroundaTable  4 года назад +1

      1) Yes- you need to build all the way out to a harbour and have a city/settlement on that junction to take advantage of its trade ratio. A harbour doesn't give you anything when you roll the dice though.
      2) You can only play 1 development card on your turn. If you play a soldier before rolling the dice, you don't get to play another dev card after rolling.

    i feel like there's something missing here. do you get 4 points if you steal the Longest Road Card and Longest Army?
    also, what if your settlement is not with a harbor but just a sea? what happens then?

    • @NightsAroundaTable
      @NightsAroundaTable  3 года назад +1

      Yes - those cards are each worth 2 points to whoever holds them. If you overtake someone with roads or soldiers, you take the card, and the points balance shifts!
      If you're on a corner with no harbour, it generally means you've placed poorly, because your settlement is only served by 2 hexagonal tiles, and you don't get any harbour trading bonuses. You generally only want to build on a corner like that strategically, and usually towards the end of the game just to get your score up. A settlement is worth 1 point (and a city is worth 2) no matter where they're built.

    • @MartinTabanag
      @MartinTabanag 3 года назад

      @@NightsAroundaTable thank you so much for the help! 😁
      I just want to clarify this one thing though.
      The rule books says,
      Longest Road:
      If you hold the “Longest Road” card and another player builds a longer road, they immediately take your “Longest Road” card. They also acquire the 2 bonus victory points. (Since you also lose 2 victory points, it is a 4 point swing!)
      What does that mean? It’s a 4 point swing?

    • @NightsAroundaTable
      @NightsAroundaTable  3 года назад +1

      @@MartinTabanag Let's say you and another player are tied at 6 points. You get the longest road card, so now you have 8 points. There's a 2 point difference between you and the other player (8-6).
      Now, the other player overtakes your road length and grabs the card from you. That player goes up 2 points from 6 to 8, and you go down 2 points from 8 to 6. Even though there's still just a 2 point difference between you (6-8), the total, or absolute, number of points that was either lost or gained in that single instance is 4. You lost 2, and your opponent gained 2. The direction of the points (up or down) doesn't matter - the score has "swung," or changed, by 4 points.
      Does that help?

    • @MartinTabanag
      @MartinTabanag 3 года назад

      @@NightsAroundaTable this is a very big help! Thank you very much! We actually thought it’s a 4 point additional 😅
      I lose all the time because of this hahaha
      Thank you so much for clarifying! I am now at peace!
      And ready to win hahaha 🤗
      Love your videos by the way!

  • @racsop70
    @racsop70 8 месяцев назад

    Can’t seem to find a definitive answer. I understand that when someone initially steals the longest road they get those two points plus an additional two for victory points.
    What happens when someone steals the longest road from the second person that originally stole it? Does the second person keep their two victory points or do they lose all four?

    • @NightsAroundaTable
      @NightsAroundaTable  8 месяцев назад

      Let me try to clear a few things up: in Catan, you don’t really “gain” points. You HAVE points. At the end of your turn, if the number of points you currently have is 10, you win. But scores don’t “lock in” or ratchet up. The amount of points you have now may increase or decrease later.
      Let’s say you currently have zero points. (Impossible, i know. But watch.) When you gain the longest road card, you have two points. When you lose the card, you have zero points again. And the person holding the card now has 2 points.
      If that person loses the card to someone else, now you each have zero points. And the third player who holds the card has 2 points.
      So the card is like a “hot potato,” except it’s good.
      Does that make sense?

    You said just flip up the development cards to win but you can only do 1 per turn so if you have 2 or 3 vp points on development cards faced down you have to to wait 2 or 3 turns to play all of them

    • @NightsAroundaTable
      @NightsAroundaTable  4 года назад

      It's true that you can only play one development card on your turn, but cards with victory points on them are a special case. You can declare victory on your turn and reveal them all at once - no need to wait successive turns to flip them one by one.

    I played this for the first time this weekend, and really enjoyed the game. According to the rules explanation at the 3:08 mark a new settlement must be connected by roads to your other settlements, but the board is not set up this way. All the second settlements aren't connected by roads, or am I missing something?

    • @NightsAroundaTable
      @NightsAroundaTable  5 лет назад +2

      Ah! Setup is actually the one time you can break that rule. Before the game officially begins, you place two settlements. You can place your second one clear across the island from the first, and it doesn't have to be connected at all. But with each of your first two settlements, you place one road, and each of those roads DO have to be connected to each settlement you place.

      @NightsAroundaTable  3 года назад +1

      If you have 2 settlements on a hex and the number is rolled, you get 2 cards. If you have 3 settlements, you get 3 cards. If you have 1 settlement and 1 city, you get 3 cards. And so on!

      @@NightsAroundaTable thanks a lot for replying, I saw another video that said it was per player regardless of settlements. Thanks for explaining it, this makes a lot more sense

    What do we do with development cards after we use them? Put them back in the bank?

    • @NightsAroundaTable

      The knight cards go out in front of you. The green progress cards go back in the box. The orange secret points cards go face-down until someone (perhaps you) wins the game.

    Can you make a video about cites and knights? I just bought cites and knights and its a lot more complex then the original catan.

      You're absolutely right! If i do make one, i might have to use my 2000-era copy. i'll double-check to make sure all the rules are the same.

      @@yxz5198 It just seems that way, especially if you're trying to learn from the rulebook, which i don't find is very well written. If you have someone teach you in person, it's a lot smoother. Welcome to modern board gaming! i hope you catch the bug. :)
