Derek talks about some differences in hunting mornings compared to evenings for mature bucks and how he uses access and wind conditions to his advantage.
@heavydieselengine8989 it really just depends on the deer and the area but on average I'd say I'm set up and quiet a hour before legal shooting light usually.
@@heavydieselengine8989 I hunt in Indiana and use a climber. I like to get in the woods and to my place of setup about a hr an half to two hrs before shooting light. That way you can get up the tree and setup and have enough time for things to settle. Before first light hits.
I take off work months in advance for a week of camping and hunting. I keep getting bad weather, either too hot, or too rainy, or the wind is bad for the whole hunt club. That's life, I am asking if I don't know the weather and I only have so many days to hunt, are you saying I just need to sit back at camp in the evenings/morning if the conditions aren't right? Or is there a setup that will always work, whether it be road hunting or whatever?
@newperspective1318 as far as hunting old bucks there are definitely conditions where it's just a waste of time to try, but I'm referring to archery where I have to get close for the shot. I can find a way to hunt most places using a creek change the scent flow or something along those lines. I can hunt most any morning anywhere but very few evenings in archery season, unless I'm trying to shoot any legal deer then I just try to check the wind constantly as I move in even if it takes me an hour so I'm watching exactly what my scent is doing. It will usually start pulling a different direction at sunset. A younger buck might tolerate a whiff, a old buck won't.
@@Dereknorwoodoutdoors What do you use to check the wind, I thought about growing milk weed, but it is poisonous. I don't want to pass out eating a snack with my hands after using milk weed.
Here in Tennessee the wind will blow at least 3 different directions in every sit.
So how early is a good rule of thumb to hit the stand in the morning with a climbing stand?

@newperspective1318 I use Cattails cause they grow behind my house. You could probably buy down feathers if you didn't have any Cattails around.
