- TEAM Optimum Nutrition Athlete & Cover Model, Rob Riches, shows what he makes to eat at nighttime to prevent muscle breakdown. For details of how to win 1 of 10 Optimum Nutrition Hoodies, as worn by Rob in the video, click on the main banner on www.robriches.com
I made it, ate it, took the nasty shit ever, and then died (typing this from heaven).
I think instead of putting so much effort you can just take one scoop of casein and mix it in milk. Thatll give you slow release protein throughout the night. Take one spoon of peanut butter and you are done. No need to spend 10 min preparing that. Maybe im just over reacting as i dont have a lot of time
+arushbhai That is exactly what i do. I used to do this, now I just eat 3/4 cup of cottage cheese, a glass of milk and a spoon of almond butter. I loved this recipe, but it became annoying to do every night when i could be doing something else.
Casein actually works well. Whenever I use it I get a better recovery and feel more energised the next day.
When you heat food, you affect the proteins in it. Heat makes proteins change shape, which is called "denaturing" the proteins. While this causes them to lose function, it doesn't affect the nutrient value. In fact, you don't use any of the proteins in your food for their function. When you consume protein, your stomach acid denatures the protein -- just as heat does -- and you break the protein down into its constituent parts, explain Drs. Mary Cam (it carries on)
Thanks for the free advice. I made it, tasted great. Good to have other ideas to mix the bland diet up sometimes. Appreciate all the advice. Weird how many people commenting feel the need to be so negative and aggressive in their comments. Anyone would think you were promoting ISIS or something from the comments.
the reason of why you should eat casein instead of whey, is that the casein is slower digestible tan the whey. and since it's your nighttime snack, and you won't eat for 7-9 hours, it will be best for you to eat casein protein.
(the carry on)Drs. Mary Campbell and Shawn Farrell in their book "Biochemistry." Enzymes are proteins, and you don't use the enzymes in your food. As such, though microwaving, like conventional cooking, destroys enzymes, this is of no concern, because the enzymes your body depends on are produced by the cells of the digestive tract.
Basically it doesn't matter if he use a microwave, even if you had a raw egg it would end up in the same state once it hit your stomach acids.
gotta say of all the nutrition videos ive seen on youtube - yours are the best by far and you are an excellent presenter
one good recipe is a morning meal replacement. Take 1 cup of ONs banana whey protein, half of a frozen banana and a cup of fruit juice of your kind..
I tried this with gold standard whey and it tastes great and simple to make. Didn't even need a blender
Ive been looking for something fast an easy to help keep protein in my body during nights and early mornings when im at school, thank you in gonna give it a shot, "The only way to reach perfection is through failure"
idk i gotta say a consistent intake of protein is just overall beneficial, always eating something before bed is pretty optimal to keeping mass on
love all your nutrition and workout videos all vvery educational and helpful thanks rob ! keep them up plz
I just made this recipe but I used a Natural Vanilla Whey Protein and it is GOOD. It doesn't taste like a dessert with tons of sugar but it is pleasant. I will probably make it a few times a week for an evening snack.
informative, thanks. i guess another factor is - if you eat something before bed you'll have more glycogen in your muscles when you wake up, compared to if you didn't eat a few hours before bed. which could give the illusion of muscle gain/loss..
Jst made and eating this now but I find it to be very dry and drinking it with a cup of milk.. And not the best tasting but like I always said " if it tastes good it bad for you" and "if it tastes bad it good for you". Old school saying!! Thanks rob fr the video.. Keep them comming
The difference ist that your body is able to use the whey protein quicker (thats why its better at the morning or after the training).. the problem is it doesnt last to long in the body because your body is using it that quickly.. casein lasts longer and your body needs more time to use it (thats why its good to eat before bed).. i hope i could help you a bit:)
He has his shit down pat man. You can tell he's in phenomenal shape by his diet.
From Dr. Louis Bloomfield, PhD in Physics from Stanford and currently professor of Physics at University of Virginia: "Microwaves don't affect the molecular structure of the food, except through the thermal effects we associate with normal cooking. That's because, like all electromagnetic waves, microwaves are emitted and absorbed as particles called "photons." The energy in a microwave photon is so tiny that it can't cause any chemical rearrangement in a molecule."
I'm aware that there are different types of cholesterol. Just because HDL doesn't sit in your artery as readily as LDL doesn't mean eating 10 egg yolks is okay. It's not.
Now Rob and Steve cook need to do a optimum collab workout!
how does this sound?
. 2 scoops low-fat 1% cottage cheese
. 1 or 1.5 scoops whey protein powder (chocolate or vanilla)
. 2 tbsp. un-sweetened baking cocoa
. 2 tbsp. ground cinnamon
. 1/4 cup water
Doesn't matter, what matters is that you get in all your required calories and macronutrients daily. Not having a meal that digests "slowly" before you sleep won't affect your muscles at all
Just to let you know that Dr. Lita Lee's book and the issues of Earthletter are both quoting those 1950's studies. How about we look at some newer studies...ones from 1995 called Nutritional effects of microwave cooking. Can't post link, but search up "anne lassen microwave" and go to Emerald Insight - "Several studies have shown that microwave cooking, if properly used, does not change the nutrient content of foods to a larger extent than conventional heating."
@Jacumbrella Well, it depends.. If you're heating protein, enzymes or vitamins, you're basically changing its structure and not get the nutrients you were aiming for. In a microwave oven this can happen very rapidly and irregularly.
you should make a review of what you eat everyday for a whole week, would help me so much..
Add stevia or other natural sweetener, cocoa, and coconut butter, then cook in oven instead of microwave. Super healthy still and 10x better tasting.
great recipe, i'm definitely gonna try it. But i agree with crouseski, there's no need to throw away the yolk. that's 5g of protein down the drain. Only do it if you're a rich pro, or if your doctor is tellin you to cut down on cholesterol (because you have hypertension or atherosclerosis or because you are smoking a lot). Otherwise, tuck into the egg yolk, Max T.
Actually he said you can try whey protein but casein works better (and he's right). He never mentioned a brand.
The recommended dietary intake of cholesterol for most people is about 300 milligrams of cholesterol. An egg yolk contains about 210 milligrams of cholesterol. Care to rethink your statement?
The protein itself gets nuked by low pH and enzymes in your digestive system, which is neccesary for you to absorb it. Heating doesn't change that - only the 3-dimensional structure (denaturation). Yes, this destroys the biological activity of for example enzymes, but again, that happens in your stomach anyway. After heating, your body can still break down, absorb and utilize the proteins themselves.
Quick and easy recipe would be protein pancakes, all you need is oats, whey and egg whites (add what you want) and thats it, blend it all together and put it in a pan :D
even rob hates that beeping microwave noise 3:59
im going to give this a go.thanx for the demo.
I know it's in there. And I bet you can also find tensile failure limits in science textbooks as well - that doesn't mean that it applies to microwaves. Just because you find scientific terms in a textbook doesn't mean you can just apply it to anything you want. Structural isomerism is something that does not occur with microwaves.
Why is he breathing so heavily ?
Tren, clen, Dbol and ect
Oh wow it's my own comment from 2 years ago dayumm

Cameraman; "wtf.. where did he go.." "THERE U ARE"
200 grams frozen fruts nad 40 g protein and 0.5 dl milk non fat or water and blend it all upp and it will be like milkshake nad if you want more just keep on blening and it will rise upp to a fluffy milkshake that you can eat with a spoon and its long lasting
What can you replace all these recipes with for the nut products? Sorry to be an allergy burden but nut allergies are pretty common and I think many of us would appreciate knowing if there are any solid alternatives.
Been making this and taking a zip-lock bag-full to work...snack on it during the day. Really satisfies the appetite. Great protein snack.
he wiped eggwhites on his jeans..
+Rrock Cj i saw it too.. hihihi
To prevent catabolism
Yea lol
Awesome Rob. Do u know how much calories it is in it?
I have 1 question, Whey protein isn't better then Casein? I want to buy one
Microwaves do not change the chemical components of in food and so the formation of new compounds, like carcinogens, is not expected. Some studies have been conducted to investigate any possible negative health effects of microwaving foods. These studies, which have been reviewed by Health Canada scientists, have found no evidence of toxicity or carcinogenicity.
As long as you dont overheat/overcook the food and have a proper ventilated lid, and a well maintained microwave, Your safe!
he cannot put everything he does here, thats his success and what we have to learn
i believe you're confusing catabolism with muscular atrophy, catabolism does very well happen while you sleep, considering that catabolism also includes glycogenolysis and the breakdown of lipids
Just made this except I used Myofusion. It comes out like a sponge cake and much tastier than a shake! I don't really see the harm in using the microwave. I use it for sweet potatoes and broccolli all the time.
is that how it felt in your stomach ? how was digestion ? any constipation ?
Man...he's moving around like he's on the CRAZE
Depends what you mean by the best foods.
If you're implying particular brand names are superior to others, you are wrong.
If you're implying having a balanced diet consisting of mostly healthy foods is beneficial, you are correct.
It's fine, pea is a vegetarian source protein. However, the amino acid profile isn't as good as whey.
Fair enough that's a good meal but what would you recommend for people on a budget who can't afford to eat this sort of stuff every day
Doesn't adding heat to protein diminish its nutrients?
Just made this... perfect. Liquid egg whites (pre-bought) work beautifully too.
@Jrshort08 Though he uses casine protein because it take longer for it to release hence night time snack for 7 hours of sleep.
Thank you very much ! Really helpful information
Thank u brother. Very much enjoyed the info
Vitamix Brand Blender - they sell them at BedBathBeyond just get a 20% off coupon before you buy it. Also, they have them on e-bay or Williams Sonoma.
That looks great! cant wait to try it. Thanks for the Post RJ
Hey Rob awesome video can i use peanut butter instead of almond?
egg yolks are high in cholesterol. you can hate all you want, but there are parts of every animal you throw away because it's unhealthy. Again, i agree i won't eat what he's making here but that doesn't mean it's a bad idea. cottage cheese is also high in fats. I would agree with the nuts though.
@allaniiii Also to work the outher part of the chest use a wide grip and to work inner a narrow grip! remember keep the chest out!! and try to feel the chest working focus, dont just push the weight up!! try to contract the chest!! Since i workout at home i do all my presses on my Swiss Ball!!!
For the record... Protein powder is not a supplement. It is a food, it has calories.
@Body4Life21 taking casein with water and cooking the egg white as omelet + the almond butter on a slice of bread would make your job lot easier. He is doing it the tough way.
i don't care what it looks. just eat it to gain muscle, thanks rob.
why is he so fuckin aggressive??
John Smith roid rage bra
+Distant System he is so Gordon Ramseyish
Mac Smith yea! I'm so stressed after watching this!
And this is how a found out i had a Casein intolerance. I was fucked up for a week after this, cheers Rob haha
Great hoodie.. wish I had one
so I was wondering.. I can just eat 5 raw egg whites, a hand full of almonds, then drink a small shake of casein to get the same effect right? Because for me that would work better.
He makes also a cottage cheese type of night time protein meal, that tastes awesome I m
@allaniiii PS to get a big chest: based on the minimal information you've given you should be doing 3 exercises - flat, incline and decline presses with barbell or dumbbells. Make sure you use proper form. If you're just starting out use lower reps (4-6) and higher weight to get your strength up. If you're a little more advanced you should be in the moderate 8-12 rep range especially if you're trying to go anywhere in football.
If you eat that ever evening, what are you doing with all the egg yolks?
Are you using them for something else, throwing them away would be a shame?
1scoop of casein in a mug, 1tbsp of natural peanut butter, 2 egg whites, mix and microwave for 60 secs approx voila!
its more night time, the duration where you have no nutrition for 8 hrs, how is eating more during the day going to fix that?
thank you for having something most amateurs do not have, intelligence.
I don't have a blender, would it make the texture different if I didnt add the blended almonds?
If im right the protein structure will be destroyed when being in the microwave.. So that makes alot protein unusable
Any other info on that? I was thinking of switching from nighttime whey to nighttime casein, I was searching and many people say that whey before sleep= money in the trash others say its good to keep you satisfied for the 4 first hours of anabolic sleep. And when you reach catabolic sleep your metabolism slows down so you wont tear up muscle..
Damn! Im cutting right now, so I went to the kitchen and had 2 eggwhites one scoop of protein and a dash of oats...And I was worried it was a lot! Im SO trying this recipe...
missed you Rob
guys does this nighttime protein stuff actually increase gains?
sorry maybe the info from them didn't help for you but i took some of the tips from mike chang and they really helped for me. I just takes the tips that i think are best from the best youtubers and try and fit it into my lifestyle because remember everyone is didn't and they need different routines to fit in with there lifestyles so just look about youtube and find what works for you.:D
I can break down muscle in my sleep? Damn, how many sleepwalking sets should I do?
Can anyone please help me and tell me what he put first? Raw Omans? Raw Warmans?
why did he use free ranged organic eggs when he didnt even use the yolk?
let me guide you through it :). step 1 up open your mouth. step 2 insert the food. step 3 chew. step 4 swallow. these steps are very hard i understand. but you gotta learn someday!
any other method of cooking this without a microwave?thanks
i use cottage cheese because se casein protein powder is too expensive. i usually get 2 lbs of whey protein powder for $28.00.
that is just what i was told.......and i think 6 sleepwalking sets is the way to go
Very interesting, your a machine brother. Thanks for the tips Rob
This dude just made chocolate flavored scrambled eggs.
Tried it with designer whey ., it taste nor that bad with a lil bit cinnamon...but the consistency is dr
can we use whey instead of cassein
is there an advantage to this?...i'd rather eat the ingredients by themselves.
Hey Rob quick question, why do you eat organic if you're going to consume ON products with aspartame and sucralose? Doesn't make sense to me, that shit's bad for you!
To keep you from getting into a state of what?
i usually eat low-fat 1% low-salt cottage cheese at night , is that good?
I know right? "OH SHIT I WAS SUPPOSED TO EAT 5 MINUTES AGO... EVERY MINUTE I DON'T EAT I'M LOSING A REP ON MY SQUAT"
Can any flavor do ? Im taking the banana flavor now.
I think you meant to say "The broscience is working for him"
