Never ceases to amaze me that these folks always drive around with expired tags, no insurance etc etc etc while they're doing drugs or running drugs and then they're always surprised they get caught. I had surgery last year and they were giving me opioids all day everyday in the hospital. They were needed as my pain was an 8-10 on a scale of 1-10. I had never taken an opioid before in my entire life but with the opioid epidemic in this country I was definitely thinking, so this is how some people’s addictions start. Luckily I didn’t see the appeal of them other than pain relief but I kept thinking it could really be that easy to get addicted huh? Need surgery, need opioids for the pain and boom your life is instantly changed. I was lucky but I’ll never judge people who aren’t.

So many young people hurting out there. People don’t get high to feel good they get high to mask emotional pain.

I think that the Miranda rights should be updated or changed to include the statement "if you do not wish to talk or answer any questions, that will not be held against you in court". I see so many cases like this where they are read their rights, but clearly do not understand them. And im sure its deliberatly done in a way where they make it seem that refusing to talk (i cant help you if you dont talk, do you want to tell your side of the story, if you dont defend yourself now you will be charged) is detrimental to your case. Miranda rights should be clear enough for anyone whos not a legal expert to understand exactly the situation they are in.

The way the officer says, "well, then just quit. you're not trying very hard." that is judgmment and that's exactly why she didn't want to tell him in the first place but felt more comfortable telling the other officer the truth. Not a trauma informed response to an addict at all and very miseducated as especially with substances, it's not as simple as "just quit, try harder." there is a very real coping mechanism and brain chemistry that goes on in the brain and often treatment is required.
