A song literally about what not to do at a strip club...Rule #1 "Don't Fall In Love" 🤣
number 2 rule, never make eye contact.
I'm an idiot. I would probably fall in love!
As one who worked in strip clubs for over 10 years.....that is indeed very true. I've seen guys get really stupid. I mean, mind numbingly dumb.
@@davidhutchinson5233 Loneliness.
Fee (lead singer) has a great story about what inspired the song - one night in San Francisco.
The girl talked about in the video is a girl who works in a glass booth for peepshows at old, travelling circuses or carnivals. You pay the money, then go into private area where there is a friendly, scantily clad woman in a glass booth who will chat with you or move around as you direct them until your time is up.
The young boy who stars in the music video grew up to be Alexis Arquette, who also starred in "Pulp Fiction" as the scared white guy with the "hand cannon" who gets blown away in the apartment where Jules and Vincent retrieve Mr. Wallace's briefcase.
good knowledge
Also played George in the Wedding singer
@@mmsmith03 I forgot about that! That was a good movie. :)
I love the 80’s!!
The divine intervention scene featuring Marvin, Brad, ‘a Flock of Seagulls’, and sponsored by that Hawaiian Burger Joint
This song is amazing. I’ve heard it a million times and, one day my wife says “You know this is about a stripper; right?” I’ve never been all that much into lyrics; so I was like “What??” Then I listened to the lyrics and…..yup, that’s what it’s about. Lol. Also, it has an amazing guitar solo for a pop song.
Peep show girl
Steve lukather gave us that awesome solo!!!
@@randywissler9923 that's crazy, I was listening to this and I had forgotten about the solo, when I heard it I was like, man that sounds like Steve Lukather. Checked the comments and saw this. thanks for the info, saved me the time of having to Google it.
@@grogueQ no prob brotha!! Always nice to learn something new everyday. Hell, I just learned that Talk to ya Later wasn't a top 40 hit. Didn't even break the top 100 on the charts. It was 101.
OnlyFans girls. 1000% lol all smoke and mirrors bullshit to take your money
Everybody complained for months that Brad spent too much time on the lyrics, now I don't think he reads them anymore. First verse, behind the glass. You can look but you can't touch. This is not a mystery, this is a peep show girl.
Peep Shows are close to non-existent in this country nowadays, so the first verse lyrics may seem like easy bread crumbs to follow for some. But for Brad and Lex, who l ikely haven't encountered 70s/80s Times Square or rural lurid sideshow dancers before (or watched HBO's The Deuce for example) this is a pretty close reading. Internet porn is like the crack cocaine of the exploitation world, so lots of other ways to get erotic kicks in our sexually repressed society like skin mags, peep shows and drive-in movies have all given way to the interwebs.
Amsterdam Red Light District 😂
I forgot all about this song. As a kid in the 80s, this was played over and over.....brings back memories for sure.
Damn straight, but I never forgot about it!
I think it was used in at least a dozen 80s movies too.
This is when the Tubes had a more commercial sound. I’d recommend their first two albums or the album Remote Control. As others suggested “ White punks on Dope” or “ What do you want from Life”.
They had like three hits that I can remember...this one, Talk To Ya Later, and White Punks On Dope
good knowledge.... so fun live! I saw them twice before and after they were famous.... good times!
"What Do You Want from Life?" was always my favorite.
Don't forget their bit in Xanadu!! :)
I Don't Want To Wait Anymore is another
Gonna get it next time and Attack of the 50 foot woman also.
The Tubes are a super talented band and they have a lot of great songs, many of them having sarcastic humor in their lyrics. They had a bunch of hit songs besides this one (one of their best IMO), including Talk To Ya Later, White Punks On Dope, Don't Touch Me There, Don't Want To Wait Anymore, among others, but I think you guys would like the song Tip Of My Tongue, which is really funky and has the Earth, Wind and Fire horn section (along with some slightly inappropriate lyrics). I went to see them play in a fairly small venue in central MA several years ago and shortly before they were scheduled to start, my wife went to go to the bathroom, which was down a set of stairs in the corner of the venue. The members of the Tubes were on the stairs waiting to go on and when my wife went to go past them, one of them said "Where are you going"?! She said "Ummm, I'm going to the bathroom", and he responded with "Alright, we'll wait". 😂
That's so cool of them to say that! 😎
@@VidiotSavante White Punks On Dope!!!!
Monkey Time by the Tubes is hilarious... you should also look at a live video these guys really knew how to entertain an audience. Saw them 12 times and was blown away each and every time.
@@joecaruso9990 Yes!!!
One of, if not, the best bands to go see over and over again back in the day. The tubes had one of the best stage shows around.
San Francisco's beloved Tubes. I think this was their only top-forty song, reaching the #10 spot. But yes, they have a bunch of other fun/erotic/goofy/theatrical/sporty songs.
You would think "Talk To Ya Later" would have made the Top 40, but I 'm pretty sure "Don't Want To Wait Anymore" did instead. At least that's what I remember from high school.
This one makes me think of Golden Earring - Twilight Zone.
@@dennismoore3383 You're right, "Don't ... Anymore" reached #35 on the Billboard Hot 100.
When Brad said this song made him think of roller-skating I about spit out my drink. The Tubes had a great scene in the movie Xanadu with the song, “Dancin’.” Olivia Newton-John was on roller-skates during the scene. Mind, blown.
Very 80's, but sort of a carnival ride vibe. Lead Singer Fee Waybill has a sort of carnival barker effect in his delivery,"Step right up", ya know? The Tubes were a very over-the-top theatrical type band, but quite a few hits. For something completely different, try their song "What Do You Want From Life?"
White Punks on Dope is another good one.
And...who's going to explain "a baby's arm holding an apple" to Brad & Lex?
@@parisbrat my point.
Yes. Do What Do You Want from Life. I wonder howmany of the cultural references you will get.
So much better if you could have done the actual video. She's a beauty.
Yeah, when I saw this, i was hoping for the actual video. The reaction would have been much more comical. But i do love watching Lex jam
Isn't she a "mermaid" - I just remember thinking she was THE COOLEST
Yep there missing out ,reaction direction would definitely be different. They forget you need to come get you're MTV 80's reality for those that was their.
That's the only thing that bothers me about this channel. They rarely do the video. Otherwise, they're great.
...she was hot, probably like...60? now
Not a prostitute... a dancer. But I love this song, you have to sing it at the top of your lungs whenever you hear it. I'm blessed with senior neighbors in my trailer park, who are literally almost deaf, so I can make all the racket I want. 💃🎸🎵
You can also sing 'she got booty'! Lol
I love the way Lex just starts grooving to the music shortly after it starts. You can tell she diggin it. 😆
Good songs their album Remote Control. "Turn Me On", "T.V. is King" ,"Prime Time" and "I Want It All Now".
for their early days, "What Do You Want from Life?", "White Punks On Dope", "Don't Touch Me There".
Seconded heartily. The Remote Control album was produced by Todd Rundgren, and every track is a gem, IMO.
“White Punks On Dope,” in particular, should be seen live. This band is very theatrical in concert, and they put on a show. WPOD features Fee Waybill’s alter ego, drugged out glam rock star Quay Lewd, and must be seen to be believed.
I crank that song whenever it comes on my radio. Love it! Good taste, Lex.
Haven’t heard this song in a long time. Thanks for the flashback to my youth. I agree with Lex, it’s a great song well put together.
I think one of the lyrics were wrong though…
It should be “if you do you’ll find out she don’t love you” not “if you do you’ll find out you’re gonna lose”
You've definitely got it right...easy to 👂hear.
Yep, you're right. I thought I had heard it wrong all of these years, so I backed it up a couple of times to make sure that I was right and the lyrics in this video were wrong. The video lyrics were definitely wrong.
EXACTLY. Sometimes these lyric videos are WAY off.
Works either way
Continue with The Tubes: The entire album "The Completion Backwards Principle". You can't lose... Everything on it is great!!
You guys are great. After hearing a song for 30+ years it loses some of that magic. Watching you guys experience that song for the first time reminds me of hearing for the first time again, and that magic is back. Thank you so much.
Watch them review Mony Mony,,,by Billy Idol. You'll enjoy it,,,👍👍👍😎
I always get a kick out of these lyric writers who have one job and can’t get it right. Don’t fall in love because if you do you’ll find out she don’t love you.
Always thought it was 'if you do you'll find out you're gonna lose'
I’ve been listening to this song for 35+ years and I just realized it’s about a stripper. Lol
Another great 80s song. Still love this one.
I think their main hit was Talk To Ya Later. I think they got labelled glam rock.
Both TTYL and She's a Beauty were hits.
@@crazeyjoe TTYL wasn't a mainstream chart hit tho.
OMG, I love the roller skating comment. We used to go to the roller rink all the time and I do remember them playing this song. I’m sure anyone from my day can remember free skate, couples skate, adult skate, races and the guy who would put on new wheels for you. ♥️.
"Talk to Ya Later" is a great song. Lex will love it.
What Do You Want From Life, White Punks On Dope, Mondo Bondage, Slipped My Disco and Drivin' All Night. Such a great live band
Fee Waybill has the absolute most natural singing voice ever!!! And Steve Lukather doing that final guitar solo, 🔥🔥🔥
If you are going to do The Tubes, you have to do "White Punks on Dope."
100%!!! I was going to suggest this same song!!!
The live version
I'd go with dancin' from xanadu.
"Don't Want to Wait Anymore" was their only other top 40 hit, and it was from 1981. It got a lot of MTV play but never hit the top 10 like this song did. It's a very different sound for this band, a power ballad.
She is a girl who works in a peep show. It has a place to put money like a candy or Coke machine; put a dollar in, the curtain opens and she is there behind the glass (lyrics tell you that in first verse). She struts around like a stripper and you can talk to her. After a minute, the curtain closes. Want to see her again? Put another dollar in the machine.
Y'all miss out on so much by not watching the videos. In this video, you see what Fee Waybill (the lead singer) is singing.
I'd suggest you google the lyrics to these songs, then watchnthe video and follow the lyrics. You'll be able to find out what the song is about more completely and you would never have to guess or speculate again.
Had a shitty day today, Lex's smile and 80's dance made me smile. The Tubes ROCKED too... lol
...Buck up Hobson! I love Lex
Lex and her moves are definitely a tonic!
this song was popular my Senior yr high school. excellent memories during Sr trip. never saw the video until later in college and then it made sense. most kids didn't have Cable tv yet back then. I still have my free MTV t shirt for signing up for new cable hookup. doesn't mean as much now since they don't play music anymore. :(
Regardless of any other meaning this song may have, there's also an official surface meaning. It's meant to evoke memories of circus freak shows, where you pay to view odd sights and sounds. There is an official video to this song, where the lead singer is a ring master, and he sets a young circus attendee on a sort of carnival ride. (In the lap of an attractive woman) The rail car weaves its way through a sort of freak show, complete with mermaids & stuff. I HIGHLY recommend that you see the video for this song. Of course, I'm pretty sure you're correct about the deeper meaning behind the video - to some extent.
That is Steve Lukather on guitar, the legendary guitarist from Toto, who was, and still is one of LA's most sought after session musicians. You can hear why he is so great - just listen to the guitars in this recording. Among many others, he also did the guitar tracks on Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album, except of course for the famous EVH solo on Beat It.
I thought the guitar sounded familiar but couldn't get a bead on it.
Steve's book explained how he and fellow Toto bandmate, Jeff Porcaro, saved EVH's original recorded solo.
One of the best produced tracks ever. Tons of layers and sound effects. Doesn't get played on classic rock radio.
Their concerts were banned in some places for nudity in their live show. Which of course made us like them even more.
I like how, while she getting into it, he's sitting there trying to think of something else to say besides "this is a stripper pole song".
His relief when he got her to say it was classic.😊
What Do You Want From Life is a must for Brad, I would love to see his face when he hears " A baby's arm holding...............!"
This is how innocent a child I was I had no clue it was about a stripper, just thought talking about a girl he liked. great song makes you want to dance or roller skate and we loved it
Listened to this in H.S. and I love the Tubes. I never figured out how Mtv featured a rocking song about NYC peep show booths and got away with it. I also love "You'll get it right Next Time" featured in Chevie Chase's movie Modern Problems. Dial-up the video with the Chevie Chase cuts and watch the shenanigans. hilarious. and the Tubes said I'll TTYL. ;)
I seen the Tubes like in 75 or 76.
Im pretty sure it was 76 at the Greek theater in L. A.
A very small place.
We went down there the night of the concert and got tickets.
Three rows from the stage, right in the middle. For 6 bucks.
This was when they first released their first album.
The one that had White Punks On Dope and Qualude on it.
( I don't know how to spell Qualude ).
In L. A. this was during the Hollywoodish era.
That's what we use to call it.
We were all rock n rollers.
I was 17 years old at the time. And already had been to at least 20 concerts.
Like Zeppelin twice, ZZ Top and Aerosmith just to name a few.
But this Tube's concert was one of a kind.
I'd never seen anything like this, and NOTHING like it sense.
They were great, they acted out all their songs. All in different costumes.
They had topless chicks dancing around in some of the songs. And then during some songs, they had big TVs showing porn videos.
They were very different.
But they were great.
And put on a great show.
If you two want to hear a song of theirs that will really let you hear how different they really were back then.
Check out What Do You Want From Life.
The last line in that song is
A Baby's Arm Holding A Apple. LMFAO 🤣😆.
You two got to check it out.
I would also like to thank you two for all the videos you make.
You listen to a lot of songs that came out when I was a teenager.
And it really brings back some great memories from back then.
That I haven't thought about in years.
Thank you both so much.
Take care and keep on rock'in.
They used to wear this out on MTV back in the early 80’s! Ha…flashback 😜
It's not a one hit wonder though. Talk To Ya Later is also one of their popular songs.
They did a reaction to that a few days ago.
"White Punks on Dope" for next Tubes!
i really like the Tube, for many reasons. Fee is definitely one of them for sure. he started out as part of their road crew and ended up being their lead singer. one on the most unique and amazing voices with many different dynamics.
I love revisiting all these songs from my youth... I know, I'm old... but good music is still good music...
From 1983; a followup to an even better song from them, "Talk to Ya Later"
The song with video is awesome!
Killer background vocals. Bobby Kimball said he sang all background parts on the chorus. Bill Champlin said he sang the soft parts on the verses. And Steve Lukather with that guitar, just wow
This is right in the heart of the 80's and MTV
Their live show is like no other. I saw The Tubes multiple times, but my favorite was at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston on Halloween night. Everybody was in costume, and it was crazy. Looking down over the crowd was like being in a Star Wars scene of a movie.
Lex places the years of songs pretty well through association. We have to figure out how to use her as a clean source of renewable energy.
The Tubes were HUGE. Steve Lukather is an amazing guitar player .
Went on to play with Billy Idol's band . Very underrated.
A great Bay Area band formed in the mid 60's, with a prolific and dynamic range of songs... this song was their Swan Song.
OK guys... so as a high school boy in San Francisco in the 80s there was a club on Broadway Street that was different from the other strip clubs called The Lusty Lady. You would walk in to a booth, put a dollar into a slot and a partition would rise up and on the other side of it were naked ladies dancing. One of the ladies would then walk over to the glass and perform a show. Just as it got interesting the partition would lower and you would have to put more money in to get more show. The Tubes wrote this song about that specific San Francisco club. It became one of their huge 80s hit songs! The club made a lot of money!
Bowling! Back in the 80's, a local New Wave Station, 91X FM, used to have "Rock N Bowl" events at local bowling alleys! They would broadcast live and play all the great stuff, while you bowled in a darkened bowling alley with only the lanes lit up and day glow and neon lights going! Lex would have loved it!
The Strokes milled around.. experimented on a few albums. Then one day their record label said "you have to have a hit or we're dropping you". And hence this song and "talk to you later' were born.
The Tubes are one of my favorite bands, seen them twice, sadly not in the 70's when they did their huge theatrical show's, they were very intertwined with Toto, actually it's hard to say which albums Lukather was really playing on, anyways, should check out their songs Tip Of My Tongue, which is about going downtown, and Talk To Ya Later, Fee Waybill is one of the most clever lyricists in history.
NEVER SAW BACK TO THE FUTURE??! OMG! LEX, YOU MUST!
There is a live version of this on RUclips. This is one of my all time favorites.
This is definitely one of my favorite tunes of the '80s. I don't know what it is about it but it always appeals to me.
I broke up with my first love many years ago at a Tubes concert. They hold a bitter sweet place in my memories.
I remember seeing this a lot on Mtv in 1984. All these years I thought the lyrics were. Don't fall in love cause if you do you'll find out she don't love you.
Bowling & roller skating are "timeless" fun! Every generation can enjoy 😉. The Tubes had 2 or three hits back n the day.
Great one guys, thank you!! The guitarist on this track was from TOTO, Steve Lukather. 😎
I think he wrote, or re-wrote, the guitar parts.
Lex is right. This sound catches the feel of pop music from 1983. It all changed one year later when Madonna arrived.
Their most famous song and their REAL best song is 'White Punks on Dope' from the mid 70's. I can't believe no one has reacted to it yet.
The song was about peepshow booths (pre internet) . A private booth with a chair, and kleenex. A slot to put dollars in and a phone handset. Put in money and the metal door slides up to reveal a scantily clad woman in a glass booth who you can talk to through the phone. She dances and puts on a show as requested by the viewer. The trick is that the door is on a timer and slides closed unless you keep feeding it money. Thus the "SHOOP" sound in the song which is supposed to be the sound of the door sliding.
If you're going to check out more of The Tubes , definitely need to hear White Punks On Dope , that is a classic !!!!
Yes I agree about watching the video while listening. In the 80’s almost every song we heard on the radio also had a video. It was kind of a package deal. Watch the videos too if you can.
Bowling on roller skates!! That's definitely what this song is. 🤣
One of my favorite songs! 💪🏾😛 ….. but don’t fall in love….. she’s a beauty!!! Riedell 595s, laser plates, redline fan jets!!!
There is a Tubes-Runaways connection who you just reacted to. The Runaways got their big brake opening for the Tubes at the Forum in LA about 6 months after opening for my friend's band at some dive banquet hall.
I have vague, hazy memories of seeing the Tubes in NYC in the theatre on 14th Street near 2nd Avenue. The place that eventually became the new, downtown Studio 54. I have hazy, vague memories that it was a great show.
The Completion Backwards Principle album was just fun - excellent musicianship, catchy lyrics, and Fee Waybill belting them out.
The wife here..., Loved this video back in the day..I still love this eighties gem!!
Damn guys. What a great song that brings back some of the greatest memories of my teenage years. This was a giant on MTV back then. Probably one of my metal gateway music videos. Late at night they’d play hard rock metal videos on a show called headbangers ball. Damn this song triggers memories. Thanks guys.
MTV favorite and for good reasons i loved it. the girls loved MTV and i had it! the only thing left was to make it happen!
Great song from an even better album IMO! Put some Steve Lukather in there and it's bound to rock AND be a hit!
She's so much fun and enjoys the song for what it is, He does nothing but analyze instead of enjoying the song as a whole. The song is about a private dancer in a sex shop... behind the glass
You should check out their songs "White Punks On Dope" "Don't Touch Me There" "Talk To Ya Later" and "I Don't Want To Wait Anymore"
I used to love this song when new. The Tubes were featured in the Movie Xanadu along with ELO and Olivia Newton John, which was the first rock album I ever bought and is a favorite even today. BTW I think they were singing about strippers at a peep show. Most prostitutes don’t cost you “a dollar first” lol.
What everyone says - this is about a woman who works in one of those rooms with several booths. When someone pays to see her, a curtain or blind is raised, and they can view her, talk to her, etc.
This was on the radio 24/7! Lex might like Puddle of Mudd for the slow hard build! Also another rock ballad is Mr Big to be with you. Great Content, keep it up
For me, this is THE hit for the Tubes. Tons of radio play.
I roller skated to Double Dutch Bus. This song came out after the rink closed, cuz to many of us would go behind the building to make-out! No shit.
This is like listening to a TV show without watching it. Go back right away and react to the version with the official video!
Pre-chorus & chorus on this one is FCKn sublime & so on point. 🙃
You guys gotta do Higher Love by Steve Winwood. It's like one of the most 80s songs ever and it's awesome.
This song is about the peep shows they used to have in San Francisco on Broadway and Columbus…the girls were behind glass and the cover would drop as you put your dollars in the machine
It’s about a peep show, most likely the Lusty Lady in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood, since The Tubes were from San Fran.
I remember when this song first came out. Everyone I know had the same response - "That's the Tubes?". They had other fairly successful songs, but this one was definitely a departure from their usual sound.
This band started in the early 70s, playing something close to Frank Zappa, but enjoyable and much more meaningful, usually satirical songs... they use to made crazy live performances, very funny and theatrical.
Those were The Tubes I find interesting and memorable.
In the early 80s they had this hit and Talk To You Layer but to be fair, it wasn't the same... except live. They were still hysterical and funny through that time. I wish someone would suggest some of their most hilarious live performances like White Punks On Dope
Have heard this song a thousand times. Always forget it's The Tubes 😄
These guys are great live and they still tour. I have tickets to see them again. Great reaction.
Lex you have such an amazing personality along with the looks …it’s one in a million
Do "White Punks on Dope" next! Truer representation of The Tubes.
Their appearance on Gil Fisher's "The Fishin' Musician" was epic :-)
He's a barker for a peep show... she's behind the glass...
It is not "you're gonna lose " it is "you're gonna find out she don't love you". I really wish these people doing the lyrics for these classic song would take to time to get the words right. This is not the first time and I am sure it will not be the last.
Right. Drives me nuts
When I saw they were doing the Tubes...I was like..Hell YA!!
