Back in the 50,60,70's none of the engines had that much power but they hauled heavy weights. Hell even some of the big trucks had gas engines in them. Like you say Mike, all about gearing.
Great video Mike, lots of good information. I went from driving a C-15 to an MX13. The power was good, the only thing I hated was we also had some X15's and those guys were always blowin' my doors off...

Hi Mike, what are your thoughts and recommendations regarding the re-occuring injector issues in the midwest US on the MX11 and MX13 engines? I understand the injectors were modified in the last 12-18 months. Will there be a design change and if so, when will that take place?
My take on this, first off i have been a diesel mechanic for more than 40 years, i live in Alaska, no emissions tests up here. This last summer i bought at a Ritchie Brothers auction two 2015 Peterbilt 579 tractors, both have the 500 hp mx13 and an 18 speed, one is a flat top, bull bar, lots of roof led spotlights, a running truck but lots of codes, exhaust elbow was removed before the scr, it was listed as emissions disabled, paid $2,400 for it, second truck which i have now at home had disc brakes all around, its a midroof, has the microwave, fridg, custom leather seats, but it was losing coolant. I bought a good used egr cooler, removed and steamed out the dpf, bought an early Davie laptop and currently researching how to do a def delete on it. I wont be line driving at all, i buy heavy equipment a lot and needed a tractor, might consider using it as an rv hauler, i paid $2,100 for it, had to buy a set of rear tires and rims as at the auction it was sinvled out with rag tires. Its very clean, runs great and both trucks havx just a bit over 600,000 miles. The other one will be hauling a belly or side dump trailer. Lots of emissions disabled trucks at the auctions, only issue with paccar is the Davie system is very expensive, over 5k.
Im a freighliner western star and international nut but i do love the beauty of the peterbilt 389 custom throw a 148 inch sleeper on a super stretched frame make it a tri-drive be a beautiful road trip beast
Mike, I have been putting off asking you some things about Peterbilt's, because I didn't want to be rude or disrespectful to you with your home videos. However, seeing this video today, prompts me to respectfully write this out.... (and while its about Peterbilts, and potentially engines, its not anything to do about the MX engines) I am a disabled U.S. Army Veteran ( I was a tank mechanic before 9/11) living on a very limited income. During covid, I started a project, on paper only, to pass the time. There are things I do not know about Peterbilt trucks, and not knowing them has made it not possible to finish my paper project. Among the things I am lacking for knowledge, is wiring harness and electrical information for 2002 - (pre '04) 2003 Peterbilt 379 stand up sleeper tractors (60" +), engine swap information (this is where it gets tricky) for 3412 Caterpillar mated to a 18spD 2050 Torque transmission, and conversion information for making a Peterbilt tractor equipped with a front drive axle and a gear box for the front axle. The TRICKIEST part of the entire project is keeping the truck under 26,000 (u.s.) Lbs, while having a custom 144 +/- sleeper ( I know.. I am being overly strict, crazy, and all of that for the goals I set myself. but imagine if I can make a viable design...) Now, in keeping with the Engine part of your video.. Say this project became a reality, and a 3412 was obtained and put inside of a Peterbilt tractor (minus the frame and body alterations due to engine size) how would one 1) tone the engine down for fuel economy and emissions, and 2) limit the torque so as not to damage the drivetrain?? Sorry if this catches you sideways... however, I would love to be able to get the information I am looking for to be able to finish my project. Due to my limited income I can not easily afford diesel manuals and such. With that being said.. where would I get manuals for a 3412, and Peterbilt tractor schematics for electrics given my limited income? Thank you, Mike, for your videos, including this tech one. I hope you do not mind me asking this lengthy bit of information..
There are bodybuilder manuals free online. They are to help any and all bodybuilders mate their body to a Peterbilt chassis. Hope that can help with your project
pre 359 was 351 most of them are called like that although they were way more difficult in model numbers (depending on hood, length, drive axles ect.) but the 352 were cabovers
I have a 2014, 379 with the MX 13. The fuel injector pump unit bolt broke. I replaced the pump and drove less than 50 miles and it did the same thing. I replaced it once more and got 200 miles before it broke the bolts again, Do you have any recommendations? It was torqued correctly with the correct bolts put back. thank You
I have a daf with the newer power rating of 530 with a xf traxon auto and really goes well for a 13litre. It’s pulled it’s way all over Europe for 2and half years and never had a spanner on it 👍🏻
We have 20 DAF XF480's with the MX13, pulling 161000 pounds, every day over long distances and bad roads, with some of them on 400000km - with very little problems and excellent fuel mileage.
I switched to a Paccar MX13 on my last T800. Why?? Because Cummins changed the gear train on the new X15 and it’s so noisy compared to the older ISX15. That drove me crazy. The MX13 is super quiet and way better on fuel. My Cummins were specked with 450/1850 and my MX13 has 510/1850. Really happy with the mx13. Oh, and it’s lighter and is less expensive then the Cummins.
The DAF motor good motor but in the UK we preferred the Cummins back in the 90s DAF trucks were putting the N14 in there 95 model rather than using there own motor which is the DAF paccar motor
@@alpharaptor7510 paccar bought alot of truck companies out they bought DAF and Foden Leyland and a couple more ERF were bought out by Man diesel which got shut down ERF accually built trucks for Western Star for the Australian market
Pierce is putting 510 1850 torque Paccar engines in there fire trucks we have 3 on order with Paccar what is the best gearing setup for our fire trucks to get out of the hole quick?
Fast rear ends or high gear ratios mean faster acceleration, but you lose top speed. Slower rear ends or low gear ratios mean slower acceleration, but better fuel economy and higher top speed. It is easy to figure out which rear end is right for you by considering where you want your RPMs to be when you are cruising at 65 to 70 mph for fuel economy and when hauling weight. You should also consider the region in which you operate your truck. If you are in urban areas with a lot of stop-and-go traffic, you will want a rear end with a lower gear ratio for fuel efficiency. If you are in hilly or mountainous areas, you will want a rear end with a higher gear ratio. In the case of a fire truck, you will want a rear end with a high gear ratio for acceleration. This will allow you to get to the scene of the fire quickly and safely.
2015 MX13 1.3Million kilometers still running strong. doesnt burn oil. Oil pressure stable at 60psi. 6MPG running british columbia pulling grossed out triaxle 46,000KG
My dream truck is a 2004 Kenworth K104 cab over with a Detroit series 60 and a 18 speed manual But if I can’t find one with a Detroit I’ll just buy one with a C15 CAT or ISX Cummins
That’s an interesting comparison, the Cat and the MX. I say that bc I currently drive a 500 cat Acert tuned to 550, and I’m currently drawn to a mx at my local Pete dealer. It drives very well and gets nearly twice the mpg my Acert in my current Pete does lol.
That camshaft thing was a big ouch. UPSer here. Many broken/flat ones. It was humorous how the issue was exposed by lower than expected electric bills.😂
I applaud the advances in engines but still prefer the old school cat and cummins to the new isx15 are great in a new truck but after def came into play just ruined everything
The Paccar engine isn’t popular here in Australia. Every one with a Kenworth wants a X15 Cummins And I’ve been in a truck with the X15 and they don’t sound that bad. Why don’t you put a Paccar engine in K2?
I’m a cat guy but I run a 2015 kw t660 with a paccar and I love the hell out of it! Definitely would recommend deleting it. We did and it made a new truck out of it just wish it had a louder Jake brake.
Good Video.First Truck i rode many moons ago was either 59 or a 79 but i want to say it was a 59. Even in the big oilfield rigups trucks you are seeing more autos with Aux. I also like to Apologize for the question i asked here a few video's ago.
I drove a 2019 Pete 379 with the MX it had good power but the power band is different than the Cat. Nothing beets the Cat growle.I think my boss said it was a 575 hp
If I was a truck driver full time I would want a engine that use lest fuel and a automatic transmission but right now I am just looking for HDT truck just to haul my own 5th wheel camper trailer or just a heavy duty truck
I have the even less rated 1051 ft-lbs Mx-13. I do flatbed avg 77k lbs and I do okay. No complaints. Everyone beats me to the top off the hill but they need that advantage to get to the fuel pump too. 😂
Are your emissions regulations timed to coincide with European regulations? We are now using Euro 6 engines to reduce emissions. Here in Europe your DEF is known as Ad Blue. Interesting video.
Can you do a tech talk on the Achates 10.6-liter two-stroke, opposed-piston engine that Peterbilt is putting in their 579 for Walmart fleet. This thing supposedly is a monster, but very fuel efficient and green.
Cat engine is king 🤴 I went Trucking with my gpa alot and he had a 425 B model cat and it climbed hills better then 500 cummins or Detroit and I'm from Washington state and we have some hills lol But that's my opinion I'm a cat guy
Hello Friends, I have a dsfmotormx13, retard motor. Why does this engine damage the valve stem, and I have seen several cases that their valve stem also breaks quickly, and this is a weakness for this engine. Is this weakness due to the construction of this engine or is there a reason that causes this problem, please guide me, this is a problem. Thanks
Sorry Mike, PACCAR may make a dependable 13 liter, however what is the incentive to abandon the big power Cummins?. Our application is farm commodity transport. Low annual mileage would equate to minimal fuel cost savings. Weight savings?, Back roads to the elevator, no scales. That fuel water separator issue was a disgrace & PACCAR refused to admit the design error, & let customers continue to be stranded.
I haven't heard about the fuel water issue. I'm not saying we have to abandon the big power but the new green house gas rules are kinda forcing it upon us 😔
Just got a MX-13 w manual… Now have to sell 2 repowered ISX with 15.5k and 39k Miles on them bECAUSE of 2009 emissions !!!! Peoples Republic of Calif…. NEWSOM and Gascon THANKS !
I think the mx range is OK I wouldn't say bullet proof or powerful as in torque as some comments say I think if they went with the Cummins top end and DPF/DEF system I also know they are not a million mile engine as they say they are 500k is about the upper limit having said that this years new design and modifications sound to be a improvement I also belive if they was 14 ltr option it would be a better engine
@@slimshady23brar yeah some over here mate I think they are in nearly every truck bar scania and volvo mind you think even some models have the Cummins scr
Hmmm comment below says the MX13 engines are used in daf trucks, thought so , power up to 510 , euro 6 poss 7 compliant , need a computer to even know where to start if there is a problem , and all trucks limited speed wise in Europe/UK (50-56mph) good engine when running well , ok up to 50 ton , pushing it a lot at 72/73 ton (160000lbs) and 13 liters , well bit on the small side , Volvo do a 16 liter 6 cyl hp up to 750 , Scania do an 18 liter V8 hp up to 730 , thats the sort of power/and more important the torque these engines make you need for gross loads upto 80-100 ton , comment below mentioned the cat 3408 , a bit of redesign , modern fuel system - common rail - to try and make 8-10 mpg and 800+ hp , if it could be made to meet current/future emission regs would be a really sweet power plant , think there is a big cummins , the Aussies use in there road trains think around 16-18 liter / 600-800 hp pulling 70 -120 ton average gross loads , outback only , , dont know bout the emission side on that engine but big torque .... , the old Mack V8 again another big cube engine lots of grunt/torque , doesn't meet current emission regs , but a good power plant . point is you need big cube engine to make big torque , power is rarely used in a big rig , if you want the engine to last that is , its driven on it grunt/torque , not it power , 1100 to 1600 rpm not 2000 to 2300 rpm ....
U can talk pack car when u put one in your old cab overs haven’t seen that yet !! So what will be your fuel mileage be ? And a Ford super duty is junk haven’t seen a good mechanically tie rods brakes and the body yet ! So your Opinion counts because they just don’t last so did you put a new motor in one of your cowbell Yet ???? I would like to see your comment did you put a new motor in one of your cowers I would like to see it what do you have to say are you going to do it
Why dont i need a MX13 ??? Every time i get one in a Curbsniffing 'DAF' (overhere in Curbsniffercountry EU) i blow the headgasket. Im Prohibited to drive a 'Daf' because of that... How do i do that ? I drive it like a Detroit to squueeze some hp out. It rarely goes into 11th gear because i beat the life out of it. Whereas when i drive a Volvo 13L engine 900-1300rpm max. (Driving it like a Cat) Buuut that's paccar these days... Gunk. They produce a new replacement for a already gunky 389... What do they do at Paccar they take the design of International and they run over it with a tank, light it on fire and try to make it look like a International again with a Paccar emblem... FAIL 379 was the last of the best series. (Just Cummins/Cat/Detroit engines and proper shifters)
Idk what you are smoking I have yet to be in any 13L motor that will run like a cat or Cummins lol . You can bring up 510/1850 all day it’s just don’t got the balls like a cat . Old school just runs circles around the new ones .
Interesting, the MX13 has always been touted as bad juju, in my experience with the 13 liter class engine is gutless. I'm just a dump/bin truck driver I started driving trucks with 400 Cummins went on a 12 year hiatus from driving. Went back driving in 2015 in a 4700SB with DD13 Alison truck is 505hp sure doesn't feel like it a 400 Cummins would run circles around it. The second truck I drive is a LT9500 MBE4000 450hp 15spd its not big power either pulls hills better than the DD13. The 13 liter engines do fine for gravel trucks, short hauls, fuel economy is a bonus. The days are long gone when you could hear the growl of a 400 Big Cam. Any old mechanically injected engines are not that common anymore.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY DELETED MX-13 (546 HP 1850 TQ) Just added PDI manifold, Fass Fuel System, Peterbilt Aircell intake, had the intake manifold ported and added 7 in pipes! She's No Cummins but She'll DEFINITELY kick some azz and take some names!👀🤔😳😎🤷🏾♂️💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
MX-13 Motors will BANK RUPT your pocket book!Mike, I had to take my MX-13 motor out because my DEF system went out, and I didn’t have $30,000 USD to fix it, either. It also had a cracked head in five places, leaked coolant so bad that I had to top it off with coolant every 650 miles. MX-13/PACCAR motors are Cummins block, but ‘PACCAR components’ if that makes sense? Look at the valve cover of a PACCAR motor, and compare it to a Cummins, literally spitting image side by side. CAT’s are NOT similar to PACCAR, CAT’s are a much different breed of motor, and *DOES NOT* like to be lugged to death, if you do, you starve them of oil, etc, PACCAR’s are slightly similar, except for you don’t have to worry about breaking a CAM like you would on a C-15 ACERT, but instead you have to worry about breaking a head on PACCAR’s, and they are over 5,000.00 USD, I could swap my PACCAR out and replace it with a custom built Detroit that WONT fail, AND, get 10 miles per gallon (my PACCAR is a 579 w/ 80’ sleeper, ‘14 model). Why can’t we import the MX-16 from Australia, besides their EPA regulations being different from northern and southern America?
Paccar engines when they first came out were horrible, the joke was you had to buy 2 just to get one that might run. Even the Peterbilt techs were trashing them, Today is a different story they worked out a lot of the bugs and now from what I am hearing they are pretty solid. Whats funny is you say they are like Cats, if you do the history Paccar and Cummins in the beginning had a deal in place for Cummins to make their engines but the deal fell threw. Sorry Mike but the best engine on the market today is the Detroit DD15's and 16's in a Western Star.
Know too many guys on a 2nd to 3rd rebuild on a DD16. Also don't like the plastic oil pick up tube that causes your engine to grenade on both the 15 and 16 litre. The guys in the know of Detroit's are replacing the pick up tube and o rings at 400,000 km to prevent this.
@@lungelinecowboy I have a friend of mine who has a fleet of 50 trucks, he has all the engines. Mostly KW's better resale value than any truck, he also has some Western Stars with Detroit engines he said all he does is change the oil in them that's it. I would look hard at an X15 Cummins I have always been a Cummins man. The ISX was a disaster.
@@maxpuppy96 That's good to know cause a fleet that size is a great place to see the issues without being a one off problem. How many kilometers is he running the Detroit's to?
I finally might make a intelligent comment. It is about the cow pee engines. First I don't know anything about them except they are the future of diesel engines and who puts the foot on the throttle. Yep, its all coming and those who hold out the longest are the last ones to even know the whys of there being there. Autonomous trucking or just a hobby owner as its about the laws past to deliver that freight. Law will dictate who can haul what and it won't let hobby Mike haul a postage stamp. We are sleeping and our government is making new laws on who can own a "spanner" or wrench here in the america's. That is either states Morgan or canada Mike, can do much more than a "special source fuel" just to start their truck. Much less fill their tank or tanks, as laws get changed will determine who can pull up to a fuel fill location. Right now we are oblivious as to whats going on around us, but there will be that day and then we just have a large toy. Plastic one on shelf to look at or steel and aluminum one setting in a shop that we can just look at. Right now I can pull whatever I drive to work in (motorcycle) up to a filling location, get some fuel and some coffee, a fresh bagel if its a real old station, and go to work. Meaning today when you went to work, you could choose a diesel rig or a gasoline engine car/truck to go in and sell someone else a rig that is going to deliver our mail, food, or anything at all. It might just get crazy enough to, they determine who does what period. Now that makes me scared. I'm relatively sure that it won't happen in our life span as I am 24 years older than you. Our kids or maybe since I am old enough to be your dad...I will make that my grandkids will be affected by these laws

Great video
Im a freighliner western star and international nut but i do love the beauty of the peterbilt 389 custom throw a 148 inch sleeper on a super stretched frame make it a tri-drive be a beautiful road trip beast
Mike, I have been putting off asking you some things about Peterbilt's, because I didn't want to be rude or disrespectful to you with your home videos. However, seeing this video today, prompts me to respectfully write this out.... (and while its about Peterbilts, and potentially engines, its not anything to do about the MX engines)
I am a disabled U.S.
I am being overly strict, crazy, and all of that for the goals I set myself. but imagine if I can make a viable design...)
Now, in keeping with the Engine part of your video..
@@mikethetrucknut Thank you for the reply, Mike, I appreciate it. I will see if I can find them.
pre 359 was 351 most of them are called like that although they were way more difficult
in model numbers (depending on hood, length, drive axles ect.) but the 352 were cabovers
I have a 2014, 379 with the MX 13. The fuel injector pump unit bolt broke. I replaced the pump and drove less than 50 miles and it did the same thing. I replaced it once more and got 200 miles before it broke the bolts again, Do you have any recommendations? It was torqued correctly with the correct bolts put back. thank You
Love your videos.
If you're thinking about a conventional, what about a 359 with the Unilite cab and a coffin sleeper? Don't see many of them now!
That would be cool
Not a trucker, but very interesting. You definitely know your stuff.
Here in Australia DAF is owned buy Kenworth and the new DAFs got the X15 Cummins
So we call the Dafworths
@@alpharaptor7510 paccar bought alot of truck companies out they bought DAF and Foden Leyland and a couple more ERF were bought out by Man diesel which got shut down ERF accually built trucks for Western Star for the Australian market

I think the Daf importer here tune the engines for more hp, as the standard 510 don't cut it. And give warranty on it still.
👍😉 Thanks the video Mike.

Have you'all installed an Hyllion hybrid kits?
So, if you sell a mx do you put more cash in your pocket?
No it actually makes no difference to me. Other than the MX is easier for me to get right now.
K2... wants a Paccar MX engine with an automatic...lol.
Who originally designed that engine?.....Where is it made?
My dream truck is a 2004 Kenworth K104 cab over with a Detroit series 60 and a 18 speed manual
But if I can’t find one with a Detroit I’ll just buy one with a C15 CAT or ISX Cummins
Fuel is a huge expense so if you can save fuel you put more money in your pocket
Rear gear train is because cab over is run mainly in Europe.
I drive a 2023 , 567 with a MX13 mated to a Allison 4500 RDS , 6 axle dump truck.
Great engines 👌
That camshaft thing was a big ouch. UPSer here. Many broken/flat ones.
It was humorous how the issue was exposed by lower than expected electric bills.😂
Great video Mike I learned alot from you thanks again

I applaud the advances in engines but still prefer the old school cat and cummins to the new isx15 are great in a new truck but after def came into play just ruined everything
The Paccar engine isn’t popular here in Australia. Every one with a Kenworth wants a X15 Cummins
And I’ve been in a truck with the X15 and they don’t sound that bad.
Why don’t you put a Paccar engine in K2?
The X15 is a great engine. It would be fun to try a MX but getting the electrical to work would not be fun in that old truck
@@mikethetrucknut yeah I understand that
But old trucks are better anyway
I’m a cat guy but I run a 2015 kw t660 with a paccar and I love the hell out of it! Definitely would recommend deleting it. We did and it made a new truck out of it just wish it had a louder Jake brake.
Good Video.First Truck i rode many moons ago was either 59 or a 79 but i want to say it was a 59. Even in the big oilfield rigups trucks you are seeing more autos with Aux. I also like to Apologize for the question i asked here a few video's ago.
All good Devon 👊😎
Wait you said 50-75,000 miles between oil changes (depending on idle)? Did you mean 5,000-7,500 miles between oil changes?
I drove a 2019 Pete 379 with the MX it had good power but the power band is different than the Cat. Nothing beets the Cat growle.I think my boss said it was a 575 hp
2019 379 ??? Dont think so.
If I was a truck driver full time I would want a engine that use lest fuel and a automatic transmission but right now I am just looking for HDT truck just to haul my own 5th wheel camper trailer or just a heavy duty truck
Heck I wish I could straight pipe my 13 386 with mx13. She just to quite and emissions sometimes don't work right
I have the even less rated 1051 ft-lbs Mx-13. I do flatbed avg 77k lbs and I do okay. No complaints. Everyone beats me to the top off the hill but they need that advantage to get to the fuel pump too. 😂
Lol, and a penny saved is a penny earned
We need to get you to Sweden and testdrive some Scania's.
That would be awesome 👍 👍
Are your emissions regulations timed to coincide with European regulations? We are now using Euro 6 engines to reduce emissions.
Here in Europe your DEF is known as Ad Blue.
Interesting video.
Not sure if they are or not
Can you do a tech talk on the Achates 10.6-liter two-stroke, opposed-piston engine that Peterbilt is putting in their 579 for Walmart fleet. This thing supposedly is a monster, but very fuel efficient and green.
Ohh... Yeah I'm going to have to 👌
Last I heard they weren’t being produced yet are they actually putting them in trucks?
@@jameswalker5427 not sure.

Hello
Friends, I have a dsfmotormx13, retard motor. Why does this engine damage the valve stem, and I have seen several cases that their valve stem also breaks quickly, and this is a weakness for this engine. Is this weakness due to the construction of this engine or is there a reason that causes this problem, please guide me, this is a problem.
Thanks
What is the highest HP you put to a MX 13 engine Mike?
510hp 1850 torque
Sorry Mike, PACCAR may make a dependable 13 liter, however what is the incentive to abandon the big power Cummins?. Our application is farm commodity transport. Low annual mileage would equate to minimal fuel cost savings. Weight savings?, Back roads to the elevator, no scales. That fuel water separator issue was a disgrace & PACCAR refused to admit the design error, & let customers continue to be stranded.
I haven't heard about the fuel water issue. I'm not saying we have to abandon the big power but the new green house gas rules are kinda forcing it upon us 😔

Lol, I didn't even realize I was playing with it until I watched it over.
Hey buddy, in North America Cummins pretty much makes all emissions components for Paccar as in Dpf/Scr, excluding wiring harness and Acm
@@slimshady23brar yeah some over here mate I think they are in nearly every truck bar scania and volvo mind you think even some models have the Cummins scr
So if a MX motor is basically a CAT, will it last as long as a CAT🤔🤔🤔
How bout the price increase?

Why dont i need a MX13 ???
Every time i get one in a Curbsniffing 'DAF' (overhere in Curbsniffercountry EU) i blow the headgasket.
Im Prohibited to drive a 'Daf' because of that... How do i do that ?
I drive it like a Detroit to squueeze some hp out. It rarely goes into 11th gear because i beat the life out of it.
Whereas when i drive a Volvo 13L engine 900-1300rpm max. (Driving it like a Cat)
Buuut that's paccar these days... Gunk.
They produce a new replacement for a already gunky 389... What do they do at Paccar they take the design of International and they run over it with a tank, light it on fire and try to make it look like a International again with a Paccar emblem... FAIL
379 was the last of the best series.
When a MX last they really last. When they don't they blow head gaskets at 30k miles
Lol kw is just as good as Pete…they are both king

I think the DD16 is alot better than the 15. I was working for WS when the DD engines came out.
Cat has always been the Best.
Not the Caterpillar Acert design !
Paccar is equal to the maxxfarce engine...
