  • Today I head out of Key Largo and run out to the Altantic Ocean through Tavernier Key. I just setup my new Daiwa Tanacom 1000 electric reel and Daiwa rod so the goal is to do some vertical jigging, deep dropping and hopefully run into some mahi.

    My phone (use it for a lot of my footage) - amzn.to/2yKyvRh
    My computer (it's a beast and great for video editing) - amzn.to/2zKBUmf
    **Other gear/stuff I use and would recommend to my viewers**

    And if you want to send me a dildo, plz not a used one...
    In this video:
    The main goal of this fishing trip was to deep drop around the islamorada humps. I have never taken the boat here before so it's new grounds for me. But I plan on learning everything about the humps and making some great future videos on how to dominate the humps.
    Spoiler Alert!!!!
    I do catch fish. And I had a great time fishing. I caught 3 different species and have a several nice dinners coming my way! I will list what fish I caught later in this text.
    First I started vertical jigging my homemade 5oz lead weight butterfly jigs. I didn't get any bites and decided to move to the humps. Before reaching the main humps I tried deep dropping on a hill. Had some baits taken off the hooks, but nothing yet. I'm still learning how to use the new Diawa reel properly.
    I finally get to the Islamorada humps and started deep dropping and jigging again. It wasn't long before I marked some fish and started drifting along the same line. The first dropped I had a few bites, but the second drift I hooked up and this time it was a fish indeed!
    I caught a red porgy and then a gray tilefish. I noticed some birds about a mile west of the islamorada humps so I get there and throw my butterfly vertical jig into the action and it gets struck by a mahi! After a nice jump it got off the jig and I knew it was time to start trolling.
    I put 2 skirted squid behind the boat and wasn't long before I hooked the first mahi. I hooked a second but something bit it and snapped the line. I wonder what that could have been.
    I put another mahi in the boat and then head. At home I cook up some hogfish and fillet my catch.
    I had a great trip today and if you found this video helpful or entertaining be sure to hit that like button and subscribe!
    Thanks!

    Dude that wasn't pretty good, that was freaking epic!!!!! For never doing it, and being out there by yourself, you did as good as anybody could've wanted too. And you know what I'm probably going to say now, man I wish I would've been out there with you. Beautiful Rose Porgy, beautiful Grey Tile, and peanut sandwiches are always great brother. I've been watching your vids slowly for a while, catching up with the older ones, and trying to space them out, so I don't run out of them. Haha, I know that's silly, but there's about 5 or 6 of you guys that I watch, and I try to keep it where there is always a new video to watch from each of you. So I always have something to watch on my down time. Always dreamed of doing this for a living at least par-time, but haven't been able to pull the ripcord on just yet. You never know, maybe one day. Anyways, you keeping doing you Hieko (sorry if I misspelled it), and don't worry about the haters, just focus on the fans, all 10,954 of them!!! I predict you'll be over a 100,000 subs in a year or so, if not sooner.
    Always trying to keep it on the reeeel.
    JJG

      No worries brother, my pleasure!!! I live in SW Miami, hopefully one day I can drive down and go out with you and slay some fish!! I've used Google Earth as a fishing tool for years, and it's invaluable, to find new spots, fishy looking spots, and even some wrecks.

    Great video! I picked up a number of tips, including saving those bellies for bait, and how to fasten the bait using wire ... its the small things that separates those that consistently catch fish, from those who just go out fishing.

    Hey you said you were going to Key West to a friend's house to ride bikes. A good way to get inexpensive weights would be to go to antique shops or housewares reuse stores and ask for their window sash weights there use to be and probably still are in some of the windows of some of those old houses in KWest

    Heiko, When you deep drop hook your first fish, keep it down there about 15 seconds to get a second fish on. Dropping 160 meters everytime for one fish is hardly worth the time

    yes you are right he is catching fish but it pains me to see the little mistakes that keep him from doing so much better and it seems like he really enjoys it and is curious about fishing like I said if he would just pick up one of the books, many books on trolling and rigging that you can get at most tackles doors it would help him a ton

    are you allowed to drink beer on a boat where you live? Also i love those moment when you just keep filming the line going up without really fast skiping it , it add some tension , cause we all wanna know whats gonna be at the end of it! great vid

    • @SouthFloridaFishingChannel
      @SouthFloridaFishingChannel  7 лет назад

      People on the boat can drink and whoever is driving the boat can drink but only when not operating the vessel. And of course you need to be under the .08 legal limit when you decide to drive the boat again. From personal experience the cops/fwc don't really care about drinking on the boat as long as everyone is 21+ and not doing anything stupid. Thanks for the comment

      You had some that were small almost like a little islander where you showed feeding the hook through the live squid then it had a small plastic piece you said to make sure you inserted into the squid, those were the ones I am trying to find.

    When your deep drop and try laying your rig on the bottom and letting it go completely slack should increase your hook ups. If you watch underwater footage of people deep drop in every time your rig moves the fish spook.

    aren't you supposed to tie on the jigging spoon with the hooks on top?

    • @SouthFloridaFishingChannel
      @SouthFloridaFishingChannel  6 лет назад

      yea sometimes I will do it that way, both ways work I guess it's preference. Sometimes I like putting the hook on the bottom so if I hook something with teeth like a kingfish there's a better chance it won't break the line while i'm fighting it.

    • @baylonaj
      @baylonaj 6 лет назад

      That makes sense. The hooks on top are supposed to prevent the jig getting pryed out. Great videos. I'm heading to the keys in Feb. Hope to use some of your techniques.

      Random question but what does your boat use for GPH @ cruising speeds? How far do you usually go out and how many gallons do you use?
      I have a 1980 Anacapri 25ft with 140hp Volvo Diesel I'm almost done fixing/setting up with live wells, coolers, and modern electronics. The old man I bought it from said it used roughly 3 GPH doing 20 mph.

    • @SouthFloridaFishingChannel
      @SouthFloridaFishingChannel  7 лет назад

      I get around 2.3-2.6 MPG when i'm crusing around 24knots. My tank holds 115gallons so I can go pretty far. A trip like this i'll burn about $150 in gas and another $25 in oil
