- Today Dan and I run offshore to test our new BallyHoop net which is basically a net designed to catch ballyhoo. Then we will go offshore trolling for mahi, wahoo and tuna in this fun Catch and Cook episode.

In this catch and cook video:
We run out to the key largo patch reef fishing between 12-17 feet of water and start chumming to get the ballyhoo behind the boat. They must have been in deeper waters today because they were not thick at all!
It took a lot of effort to get the ballyhoo to finally show up. Finally the key largo patch reefs start to produce and present us with some great ballyhoo baits. We deploy the ballyhoop net and catch our first load of ballyhoo. This is a great fishing net to catch ballyhoo
Wondering how to use a ballyhoo net?
This ballyhoo net is much easier at getting the ballyhoo far back compared to throwing a cast net. It's great when the ballyhoo are being skiddish. We load the livewell with fresh ballyhoo and now it's time to go fishing offshore!

We run out to 600 feet deep water and find a floating bucket. We start fishing the bucket and I catch a couple small bar jacks. Trash and wood and any big floating objects very far offshore usual hold a lot of fish and are great fishing spots. We decide to start trolling.
It's not long before our lines are hit. I can already taste the wahoo for this catch and cook. But darn it got off! Another hit and another loss. Man this is starting to worry me. Will there even be a catch n cook?
We eventually do catch some fish and be ready for an interesting catch and cook because this isn't normally a fish I would ever eat. And to be honest, it's my first time cooking this fish. It's a false albacore. I've seen people call them bonito or bonita, but I think the correct term for the specific tuna I caught is a false albacore.
Overall it was another AMAZING patch reef fishing and offshore trolling day =)

I need a nap from watching you guys working so hard with that net. 🤣😎 But it did work. 👍
Love your vids man. I want to visit FL soon and go catch some mahi. I live in Kentucky and love to fish for catfish, bass, crappie... I have been deep sea fishing 3 times in my life and I absolutely loved it. I went at a young age and it's been like 10 years since I have been...
Thanks Heiko for the kool video and keeping it real. We are sure you’ll catch n cook another species that’s far more popular and tasty. Take care and keep safe

Great vid Heiko.....keeping it real as usual......might I say...that Bonito....was Not Juicy...lol👍🏼
Another great day on the water. The Ballyhoop net saved the day as we had a real hard time chumming them up that day - looks like the “hoop” will be in the arsenal from now on! Awesome edit and video! You have the best channel out there! -D
I can't wait to use it with ballyhoo balled up behind the boat
Very entertaining video!! Good job!
dude I love your vids they are hilarious
I Love Your Vids Keep it up!
when people use those for tinker mackerel they normally put some chum in it to get them more comfortable
Love your vids
LOL @ 30:34 "equivalent of eating a cat or a dog" XD
From what I have seen in their commercial videos for the ballyhoop net, you are supposed to work them up to a nice number, send the net out and drag it with the boat to get a good haul in one shot. Might want to try that some time? Thanks for the good video, as always!
yea this day they just weren't balling up and staying far behind the boat
Awesome video!!
You can can those tuna, skipjack, Bonita whatever. Use Ball jars and a pressure cooker. Delicious, tastes a lot like gourmet tuna for a sandwich.
good video once again man
First. Was wondering if you had another one coming soon. Thanks
you guys look like a team, and great sushi vid
im not even in florida, im in virginia and the water is nowhere near as clear as it is there it blows my mind lol and ive been watching you for about 4 months lol. Great vids man
bleed it, soak the fillets in orange slices and soy sauce overnight. grill it with that italian wishbone salad dressing the next day. nice vid, i learned that recipe after getting skunked on a mahi/tuna trip lol.
That sounds pretty good!
As good as a bonita could be lol, keep up the great vids
im in NYC, shit weather right now but man do i miss the sound of the reel and fishing line while pulling something back in.
love your videos brother
Ballyhoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooioooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo are good bait.
What do you do with the live ballywoo? I am use to using frozen/dead ballyhoo.
Finally got a good knife I see... Love my Bubba Blade!
That was fun. Good day in the sun...!
I might have been fishing those weeds yesterday. I got some black fin trolling around them.
We were fishing Islamorada humps on Friday on a 18cc with 3-10’ swells and we see a boat like urs with just one guy on it and thought we’re not the only crazy ones We hoped it was you but I guess it wasn’t seeing this video. Btw Thanks for trying that false albacore for us and Taking one for the team :)
We've been seeing ballyhoo thick at the reefs edge 100'. Pretty strange. Tons of mackerels out there at the moment.
PS dog is a delicacy in Laos.
Have never tried Bud & Calato. Does it resemble a Bloody Mary in any way?
That photo of a bonito you had was actually an Australian bonito which are very good eating
heiko put a float on the ballyhoop then you float it back and behind also put a weight on it and sent straight down with bait and maybe get some pin fish in shallower water just thinking jt
Nice video. Thanks
Real bonito (which we catch in the North East in early fall) is an incredible rich white meat fish. One of my very favorites. False albacore is edible (particularly if you bleed it) but is kind of fishy. I prefer it raw but however you prepare it is certainly not the best fish in the ocean. Finally, real Albacore, which is what you get in a can--as opposed to false albacore (hence the name), I've caught on the West Coast. It's a white fleshed fish, much less rich than real bonito, and is also delicious.
Dude you should make a trip up here to the panhandle and get on these big reds and gator trout! Keaton beach Fl
I'm down man! Is that your boat loaded down with ladies?! Count me IN
Yea 08 scout bay boat. 4th of July at the Ft. Pierce inlet sandbar. I will email you my info about fishing up here.
BallyHoop!
I enjoy your videos.
thanks Joe
We called them skip jack tunas in Panama. Good eating. Got to bleed them. Nice vid
Please take another run at the false albacore , bleed it correctly etc. Its hard to imagine any fresh tuna- like fish would be worse than what is passed off as "fresh" here in central Oklahoma!
Ok i didn't know that thanks for the information
you could eat those bar jacks there not super great but there pretty good P.S. the can tuna is long fin tuna also called albacore
its either that or Skipjack Tuna (Striped Tuna) in canned Tuna
Surprised yall didn't grab the trash can. You always go good clean up. Great video though!
I've caught many tripletail on ballyhoo chunk.
Bonitos are great fish 😊
What do you guys think of Trigger fish, Vermillion Snapper and white snapper?
Nice fishing bro
tie a clear plastic coke bottlle to hoop and another in front of lines with holes in filled with chum..bait swims around in front of hoop and when you pull it to the boat, bait fish goes into back of net😎
Must be before Elliot! Good food to him!
In key largo today, visiting from Alaska. What should we do when they cancelled our snorkeling tour??
Go to the BigChill today. Happy hour from 4-7 and ladies drink free. I would find another snorkel boat. Should be good conditions thursday. Not sure how long you are down for.
Idc what fish it is in my opinion they all have there own taste and I like fishy tasting fish but regardless if u know how to prepare the fish what flavors to mask it or cook it correctly any trash fish can taste beautifully
In Florida false albacore are called bonito
Up north they just call them false albacore or albies
But a true bonito is sushi grade plus they have sharp teeth
We have skipjack tuna which are better then a false albacore
And that was an baby almaco jack
Heiko you should keep bar jacks i eat them all the time just throw the filets in butter and out them in the ocean with tin foil on top it tastes like lobster ;)
yea I have eaten them before. Next time i'll throw one in the box heh
You got to bleed the fish and then bleed the meat like 4 times on ice changing the water each cycle. It comes out pretty good almost close to yellowfin or blue
You have to try to catch a little bonito, gut it, and fried it whole.
IT IS GREAT.
hmm interesting. How long do you fry it for? Till the whole thing is cooked fully through?
You should have floated a piece of Ballyhoo chunk to the triple tail if you had nothing else
The right way to use this style of netting would be to drop it on the side of your boat and chum over the net and pull straight up to catch more and much more easier or using a cast net with chum.. aloha..
I enjoy your show I wish I could get my boys and my grandsons out there you should do a lot of offshore fishing around live in Texas out of Freeport the reason why contacting you those Benito when you catch them if you take the tip of your late night poke a little hole in there but I'm headed down in the live well pick them up like the black man I bet you can't tell the difference
That was probably a big dolphin or a miss strike from a wahoo on the troll. If they had any damage to the lure it was probably a wahoo.
Those sneaky fish
Sorry to bother you, But when I used to fish down there we would use a 3oz jighead white with silver streamerstrips on it and 4 extrahooks put in line inserted on a ballyhoo... If you want me to show you how to rig one up when I come down I will ok tight lines and have fun Bill Alloway
Here in the westcoast sandiego california we bleed them to make poke, bonito salad raw with wasabe and soyo. I dont know how its trash fish.
go to settings and press quality and put the one on the top
Hey Heiko, You ever drink a red eye? Yes/No ok it's a cure your hangover drink tomato juice poured in a draft beer yummy Thanks Bill Alloway
The real bonitos are only on the west coast area of the US. They are mostly in the Pacific.
Hi Heiko. I enjoy your videos alot! Are you planning and selling fishing tours? I went on a trip with Robbies last time I visited Florida. I'm from Denmark
Hey man, i'm thinking about starting something like that. Email me your details and i'll keep ya update heiko@southfloridafishingchannel.com
Min 1:20!! I see my house! Across the canal! Pretty awesome!
Chill in an ice bath in the fridge over night 12 hours and it makes great sashimi.
Hey Heiko do you know how fast you were going when trolling for wahoo?
We were doing around 6knots with those ballyhoo out back
nice beer, cheers~
In Indonesia we call it a "Tongkol fish" and we make it into smoked fish, cooked with curry spices..
A friend of one of my colleagues is an ex-SEAL. He told me the only thing from a "Central American" survival training that tasted worse than tarpon was seagull. I think you may have found #3.
How do you like that sea deck on the floor of that boat . Love the videos
super nice
Those are almaco jacks. They're actually a really good eating fish. I wouldnt let em go
That was probably a Wahoo on that black purple lure
Look at that clear blue water
This is great! I've never seen someone eat bait. Better off to go to McDonald's. Got a great chuckle
the fish sandwich from MackyDs is actually pretty killer lolol
Nice video
Let’s get it
Bleed and fillet that fish immediately after catching it (also removing the bloodlines and oily bits), then cool the meat quickly (Just blanket it with ice) for 30 mins.
Pretty good tuna sashimi. Not the best, but great for lunch on the boat.
Clean a bonito just like tuna. Make sure you bleed them and cut out the bloodline and it tastes just like black fin. Some folks suggest soaking the fillets in milk for a couple of hours in the fridge before cooking. Even tastes good in sushi and sushimi. I used to throw them back because I believed the BS folks told me about them being trash. But found out from one of the RUclips channels catch and eat how to clean and cook them and now they never get thrown back or used as bait. They come home for supper.
Which wreck were you fishing at the end of the day?
29:34 what mental part? ITS A FISH!
a fish that everyone has told me not to eat my whole life lol
New VIDEOOOOOOOO!!!
You really left that in the ocean..
well it was the home for those triple tail and no seagrass around. I dunno lol. I pick up trash all the time out there but this sucker was big
Blue runner is excellent eating IMHO. As good as mahi. Just have to clean bloodline...
