  • Today Dan and I run offshore to test our new BallyHoop net which is basically a net designed to catch ballyhoo. Then we will go offshore trolling for mahi, wahoo and tuna in this fun Catch and Cook episode.

In this catch and cook video:
We run out to the key largo patch reef fishing between 12-17 feet of water and start chumming to get the ballyhoo behind the boat. They must have been in deeper waters today because they were not thick at all!
It took a lot of effort to get the ballyhoo to finally show up. Finally the key largo patch reefs start to produce and present us with some great ballyhoo baits. We deploy the ballyhoop net and catch our first load of ballyhoo. This is a great fishing net to catch ballyhoo
Wondering how to use a ballyhoo net?
This ballyhoo net is much easier at getting the ballyhoo far back compared to throwing a cast net. It's great when the ballyhoo are being skiddish. We load the livewell with fresh ballyhoo and now it's time to go fishing offshore!
Tell them Heiko from South Florida Fishing Channel sent ya and get a discount: Theballyhoop.com
We run out to 600 feet deep water and find a floating bucket. We start fishing the bucket and I catch a couple small bar jacks. Trash and wood and any big floating objects very far offshore usual hold a lot of fish and are great fishing spots. We decide to start trolling.
It's not long before our lines are hit. I can already taste the wahoo for this catch and cook. But darn it got off! Another hit and another loss. Man this is starting to worry me. Will there even be a catch n cook?
We eventually do catch some fish and be ready for an interesting catch and cook because this isn't normally a fish I would ever eat. And to be honest, it's my first time cooking this fish. It's a false albacore. I've seen people call them bonito or bonita, but I think the correct term for the specific tuna I caught is a false albacore.
Overall it was another AMAZING patch reef fishing and offshore trolling day =)
If you enjoyed this video hit that like button and subscribe to my channel, I appreciate all the help you guys give me in the comments and look forward to making many more videos to help show how to catch fish.

Real bonito (which we catch in the North East in early fall) is an incredible rich white meat fish. One of my very favorites. False albacore is edible (particularly if you bleed it) but is kind of fishy. I prefer it raw but however you prepare it is certainly not the best fish in the ocean. Finally, real Albacore, which is what you get in a can--as opposed to false albacore (hence the name), I've caught on the West Coast. It's a white fleshed fish, much less rich than real bonito, and is also delicious.

In Florida false albacore are called bonito
Up north they just call them false albacore or albies
But a true bonito is sushi grade plus they have sharp teeth
We have skipjack tuna which are better then a false albacore
And that was an baby almaco jack

Pretty good tuna sashimi. Not the best, but great for lunch on the boat.

  • @henryher
    @henryher 5 лет назад

Clean a bonito just like tuna. Make sure you bleed them and cut out the bloodline and it tastes just like black fin. Some folks suggest soaking the fillets in milk for a couple of hours in the fridge before cooking. Even tastes good in sushi and sushimi. I used to throw them back because I believed the BS folks told me about them being trash. But found out from one of the RUclips channels catch and eat how to clean and cook them and now they never get thrown back or used as bait. They come home for supper.
