    What clamps did you use to attach the scotty bases for your rod holders?

      It's a Folbe mount it works very well. The following link it for the size I'm pretty certain I use. It's a little bigger than the Hobie rail. To make a tight and very secure fit I used a piece of rubber around the rail. www.folbe.com/fishing-rod-holders/fishing-rod-holder-mounts/universal-rail-mount-kit-1-1.250-square-rails.html. This is by far the most secure and solid mount I've found, and I've tried a few of them.

    Just a heads up. I know it seems safer using red/green nav lights but, they should be used for powerboats ONLY. White nav/anchor lights should be used on kayaks, NEVER red/green. The reason being; if a boat sees the red/green light, they can assume you have the speed and mobility of a powerboat and can therefore take evasive maneuvers. A white light signals a boat that is not underway and cannot move out of the way. Even when underway, my Native Ultimate 13 Propel (a fast kayak) is going under 5mph, basically sitting still to a boat going 50mph.
    Sweet rig though! I have downrigger-envy!

      So then why do sailboats require red/green?

    • @regularsizeruss3874
      @regularsizeruss3874 5 лет назад

      @@ericsaliba678 Sailboats are more maneuverable and faster when underway. It's all about the relative size and speed. I don't know any kayakers who can outpace a sailboat, or any sailboat as small as any kayak. Relative to a sailboat, a kayak is basically a bouy.

      Red and green light is need in my state if you have a motor for the kayak. Check your state regulations.

    Hi Doug,
    I am not sure if you're still going out much with your PA14 and down rigger.
    I am on the Canadian side but not crazy far from Baker Lake. I just finished some beta prototype for a tiny portable electric down rigger on my PA14. Still a lot to improve but I might be looking at getting some feedback. (looking for volunteers to test it for a day or two)
    I guess I would have to wait for this Covid thing to be out of the way so the gov decides to re-open the borders...
    Would you be interested?
    Cheers,
    Ben

      Hi Benoit. Just got the official word today we will get a fishery on Baker Lake. Opener is Saturday with a two fish limit. I'll be there... I'm interested in seeing what you have and giving it a try.

      @@dougshoup593 I am stuck in Canada for now, but I'll definitely reach out to you once I get my prototype finalized. Might take too long for it to be ready for this year but could still be tested later this year.

    What are those trays that you have your downriggers on. I purchased a old town Bigwater 132 so it’s a bit different than the hobie that I like your idea and want to see if it would work for me. Thanks for the insight.

      Chris, The trays the downriggers are on were custom made for that purpose. They mount on the into the Boonedox landing gear. The ones in this video are made out of stainless. I'm still making some adjustments for a setup I'm putting on an Old Town AP136. It's using the newer Boonedox groovy landing gear and is made out of aluminum.

      I would be curious to see how you do that if you wouldn’t mind sharing. I am also planning on fishing Baker lake this year and all though I don’t think I need to have access to two downriggers, I would like to have a solid base for a1050 because I fish the sound allot for salmon.

    • @dougshoup593
      @dougshoup593  3 года назад

      @@chunkyboy9624 I'd be happy to show you how it was made and set up. Having the second down rigger is nice to balance the kayak. You'd be surprised how much drag they create. Having on one side only you are continuously steering to compensate for the drag on one side. Add some wind and steering becomes very difficult. To make it work with one you would have to shorten or rotate it closer to the kayak. It's not looking good for Baker this year. I'll be surprised if we get a season.

      They are straight up killing this fishery. That is a solid idea to run two for the simple purpose of leveling out your kayak and making the steering a little easier. Especially I’ll be mostly in the sound and running a 6# weight mostly between 90-120 feet down. I wish I could go heavier but I don’t think that would be the best decision.

    What if you cut a dot/circle out of some rough grip paper and placed it inside each side of the ram mount? Would that help with staying in place?

    • @dougshoup593
      @dougshoup593  5 лет назад

      Something could be put in there to keep from rotating on the ball, but it make adjusting it much more difficult.

    Why do you want to change your downriggers to 1050’s?

    • @dougshoup593
      @dougshoup593  6 лет назад +1

      I can use a heavier ball and they operate more easily with one hand.
