You guys are awsome, love the workshop and the effort you give to this old diesel beast ... i have a 524 td but an e34, i'm working on it at the moment. This is exactly what i was searching for, cuz i wanted to install an intercooler myself.... By the way, when will you give it a spin ? .. hope you'll make a video on driving it.......Cheers from Macedonia
Thank you Filip and I'm thankful to be apart of the BMW community. If you have any questions feel free to ask. E34 524tds are awesome too (wish we had more BMW diesels in the US). I went a different route (with the intercooler) then what I've seen others do but there's no wrong way. Cheers to you to sir and yes a video of Greta (524td) driving is coming soon. 😉
Hey! I have watched this build but i dont remember do you have showed timing(belt) setting. Have you showed it or can u show in some episode how it correctly must be i own e34 with 2.4td and i have manuals and know how it must be but can u show how it can set without special tools correctly.
Thanks for the question Marvin. You are correct. I tend to "breeze" or "skip" over some things. I also do things a little different. Timing belt installation was done before I installed the engine. I had a degree wheel on the back of the crankshaft with TDC indicated for cylinder 1. When I installed the camshaft, I rotated cylinder 1 to valve over lap. With a caliper I measured valve over lap between exhaust and intake. I had to measure how far the valves are off the seat by measure valve spring height. I have an aftermarket cam and had to adjust my sprocket accordingly (so my measurements are different). I never bothered with the factory cam and crank "V" groove or line markings. The head itself doesn't have one. It's on the cam sprocket, which you'll have to transfer a corresponding mark over to the head, before you take the belt off. The crank "V' groove is visible on the crankshaft seal housing. Be sure to set the engine up at TDC before removing your belt. I hope this helps. If I misunderstood the question let me know. I'll mention pump timing in a future video. A Timing Belt replacement video is a good idea too. Thanks again for watching.
Hey love the bmw diesel content! Are you using the oem m21 injection pump? Any adjustments to it and how much lift did you time it to? Im in the process of fitting mechanical m21 pump to my m51 and not sure if i should time it to m21 or m51 spec. Thanks
Thanks. I'm learning as I go along. Stock M21 injection pump set to .078 at TDC. I wish we had more BMW diesels in the US. We never got the m51. I pretty sure the M21 is a 9mm pump head vs the 10mm (I think) found in the M51. I'm considering buying a 10mm pump head from the M51 for my M21 project. Just haven't don't it yet. On my list😉. Thanks again, means a lot to me.
Cool thanks for responding. Im in canada and bought the m51 drivetrain from an imported car that was in an accident, now its an an e36 coupe. Looking forward to the mechanical pump. Goodluck with the rest of your project.
teddy, where do i find a drive belt tension roller? bmw part # 11312241087 is discontinued and can't locate after market part. did you not replace when you rebuilt your 524td? i must replace my timing belt with this pulley, but can't locate this needed pulley....🤣
I'm sorry to hear that. BMW consistently removes parts from classic cars. I saw the writing on the wall years ago and I play the long game. My engine was built in 2018 and parts were purchased from 2015 - 2018. Lots of new parts, including the timing belt tensioner. I see a new challenge here. Looks like a part I need to make and this will be useful down the road. It may take me a few weeks but If you're interested give me a call at work. Metric Mechanic 573-765-1269
Thanks for asking. 👍 I cleaned, painted and resurfaced the stock exhaust manifold. Also, tapped it for a pyrometer (EGT). The wastegate is a universal 48mm external (Chinese Ebay, Amazon). noting special. I took it apart, inspected it and cleaned the burrs up. Nothing special. Basically you'll cap the internal wastegate with a universal 5 bolt T3 steel exhaust flange. You'll need a caliper to measure the bolt spacing and hole diameter so you get the right one. There's a few options. I plumbed the wastegate back into the exhaust system for noise, emissions, scavenging and because I simple wanted to. 😉. I hope this helps and thanks again.
It's a universal wu-tang war whistle. 😁 48 trim with a t3 flange and 5 bolt hot side. Maxspeeding turbo. From China. I went external wastage. 15-16psi. The intercooler kit comes from a Buick GNX. Thanks for asking. TR

@@teddyroweshow Thank you, it would be great to follow your work on the e28, I also have a 5.24 td in France 🇫🇷 +1 subscribers

What type of exhaust manifold and turbo blow off valve and waste gate are you using
