This thing seems far faster and more rev-happy than I would imagine a diesel automatic from 1983.
I have admit this car is the fastest production diesel car in the world in 1984! From e28 524td begins my love to BMW (in 1996 my father has like this BMW )
Fastet diesel from 80's and 90's is Audi 2.5 tdi, inline 5, that acceleration and low consumption does not have Mercedes and BMW til 2000's 😂

@@Enko063 TDi came way after like 95/96. This car is from 1984 and at that time Audi (VW) diesel was nothing at all… And don't forget BMW 2.5 TDS who came in 91. So, sorry but Audi (VW) was late on that compare to BMW and even Mercedes (300TD).
@@SuperNovaa34 hahah you are ridiculous, Audi is way ahead them always. 2.5 tdi 120 hp, inline 5, is came out 1989, with acceleration 9.9 sec and consumption below 5l. Td is around 13 sec, later tds is 12 sec, 250 td is 12.5 sec, 300 td is around 11sec. On 1994 they have inline 5 2.5 tdi 140 hp and six 6 speed manual. Hahah Audi has always most powerful dieslel engines, even today.
W123 300d TURBODIESEL was the fastest one, also this car was in Coupe version

Every diesel revs on 4500 to 5000 rpm
My old Citroen AX 1.5D revs to 5,600rpm not an issue for old mechanical pump diesel.

It's most probably a N/A engine. N/A diesels are pretty much linear as N/A petrol engines. I had a company peugeot N/A diesel. I'd rev the thing to 5500rpm every time I had chance. And the damn thing was going.

The competitors at that time: peugeot 604 td, peugeot 505 td, citroen cx td, mercedes 300td.

My father had a 760 and he said that it was the strongest diesel back then ( not the fastest) i just checked Wikipedia it 122 so slightly more) i think he told me that he did like 140kmh with a caravan once. Im nit sure if the bmw also runs a 6 cylinder

E28 is a masterpiece! Dont know for how long i have wanted one for myself. Have had over twenty five series cars, e34s, mostly e39s and e60s.

I had more than 20 years ago a 324 td! Very fast car! But the problem was the fuel consumption and the reliability… water consumption with 1 liter all 1000 km…

I dont understand why a turbodiesel from early 80 was so weak in torque can someone explain only 210 nm from a 2,4 6 cylinder should have much more in torque its like if u see a w123 Mercedes 3,0turbodiesel i had only around 150 nm if i remember right how....
Probably lower compression
In those days, diesel engines were equipped with injection into prechambers and swirl chambers (like this BMW). Later came direct injection and with it higher torque.
@@jackdaniels6536 funny fact is back in the day diesel cars drive with higher compression than today but in a diesel are high compression not a good thing modern diesel use compression low as 17.1 but back in the day they use up to 23.1 if i remember correctly but smoke alot more because not all fuel are getting burn
