Well, talking about ingenuity, couple of things from my side: 1. once fuel tank work is planned, let fuel be consumed to almost empty level, 2. unplug fuel line from engine and empty tank by build in fuel pump. This is a lot easier way to get rid of fuel, awoiding pain with nut and canister.
I will stick to just one of many reasons why Mr. For Dan's episodes are so satisfying: I have been broke so many years (not anymore thank you God) and have had to make repairs on stuff alone or do without so I see myself in these videos trying to get it done. Mr. Fordman shows how nothing gets done easily facing problem after problem. It shows how the crap that I faced wasn't unique to me. Anybody crazy enough to attempt repairs like this will face broken hammers and busted knuckles and manufacturers who don't want you to succeed but have a business model that has you giving up and buying new. I still do my own brakes and oil changes and smaller repairs and watching this makes me convinced that I can face anything. You rock Mr. Fordman.
You are the most amazing young mechanic on youtube I have ever seen. You get right to the nitty gritty without saying a word, I love it. God bless & keep up the good work & I love it.
Man I give you massive kudos! Working on an older BMW, working on it in the cold, not throwing a hissy fit using the "F" work a zillion times like I would have when that bolt broke, etc. I am a pretty talented man with many good qualities but patience is DEF not one of them! Good work as always.
Dear Mr. Fordman. 👍👌👏 2) That's a really nice, cute dog. I simply love animals and especially dogs. 💚 Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health in particular.
You really know how to use the camera very well and use the settings to create an interesting and pleasant mood. This creates a little story that you simply have to see to the end. The BMW only has a speedometer display in km and not in miles? bought in Canada?
Amazing. I've watched many of your videos. It's pretty much like all the rest of your viewers' comments. You do awesome work, man. Some of the things I see you do and your patience, thoroughness, it's just really awesome. I look forward to watching more of your content.

Simon, i love your videos but you must really love her working on a BMW. Thats too much work for me. I have heard BMWs are a nightmare to work on and problems. I use to be able to work on my vehicles when i was young like you but now being 66, i find some things better taken to the shop, but i still can do some stuff like brakes, oil changes etc. You remind me of me lol. Ima Ford guy too and have drove Fords all my life(30 yrs). I have a 01 Explorer 4x4 Limited, Winter truck and a 07 Mustang convertible GT for the summer, wich i both Love!, Your 1 hell of a smart guy.....keep up the great work Simon!
I worked with an old English mechanic at independent Volvo workshop in Perth Western Australia, crank old F&+k , but he had an elephant memory on old ways at sorting problems like your bimmer and funny he also drove a 1982 528 manual , it had more hits then Elvis on it but it ran sweet .
My late father was a Mercedes-Benz technician for over forty years. He used to always say; "German cars were built to be built, not built to be repaired". I'm getting to see what he meant more and more. He would never own one. He was a Ford and Chevy man himself.
Simon, if you want to work on german cars, get any VW from the late 90s to the early 00s. I'm constantly working on my two.....! I love your F250 and Gran Torino projects👌
I owned the exact same car best car I have ever owned went like the clappers used bugger all fuel, the trick with them though is to keep on top of the maintaince and use quality parts
I really wish the Rust Belt States would get together and find a solution to de-ice the roads without having vehicles rot quicker than designed. Looks like these repairs weren't terrible with rust, but still...
We need more aggressive awareness of lanolin based undercoating. In Canada, shops run regular advertising for a yearly rust-proofing. I don't see those type of advertisements on US tv in the salt belt.
I wish it were that simple. During the winter for weeks on end, salt barely even makes a dent, but it does help along with other chemical wizardry to save lives and property. Undercoating would be your best investment. Most folks just end up trading in when the cancer hits quarter. 😢
I had a 1978 320i that I really loved driving. It was basically like an oversized go-kart. Super simple to maintain. Unfortunately, the rear strut supports completely rusted out and there was really no way to fix them without the car being perpetually out of alignment. Not being hugely mechanically inclined myself I had no choice but to get rid of it. I've had a few BMWs since then and they they've all been expensive to keep running after hitting about ten years old. I'm pretty sure I'm done with them at this point. It was fun while it lasted though!
mega awesome video. you were patient with the return of the oil, and the fixing gas tank and really patient with those new bushing for the rear axel ! Holy Cow! You sir are a master mechanic. That Galaxie 500 sounds good. My parents had that car way back in the day. I watched your newer video on the chevrolet truck. That was a blast ! Love those two wheel drive trucks. Lower center of gravity ride smooth work all day. Long Live the V8. I would love to have your welding skills. I need to weld some steel to the frame of my TJ Jeep. I loath the salt and magnesium chloride states put on the highways. Best regards and new subscriber Chuck
Watch out for rear strut tower rust, I think I saw some? Watching your videos is giving me inspiration to make more automotive videos again. Do you find "keeping quiet" vs. swearing at the car all the time reduces your stress? I love the idea you came up with to press in the subframe bushings! I'm gunna have to remember it...
Great video as always Simon! :) To give credit where credit is due; I think the Beemer did pretty well. Considering that it's almost 40 years old, and is being used in a part of the country where you get a lot of road salt. If you take that into account, it's in excellent condition! At Min:55:00 I noticed a rumbling noise when you where filming the rear diff. Possibly a Wheel bearing?
Either you're a sucker for punishment, cheapskate, persistent, like to get your hands dirty or love your girlfriend dearly. Or maybe all of the above. Either way, very entertaining to watch. Sub'd!
You need to do a manual gear box with 3d printer for this car 😁... Hello from France, I went to your channel first for the Mercedes W115, but I stay there, even if your videos are about cars that I will probably never put my hands in... a lot of work your videos 👍👍
I wanted a used Corolla, but I couldn't afford one, so I bought a BMW instead. It's a 2001 E46. It was December of 22 when every Corolla I looked at was 7k, w/200k.😮
Excellent so far. It was an adult driven, unmolested 325i with 124k highway. It needs a couple of minor things, but the subframe is intact, no cracks. I'm a classic SAAB 900 enthusiasts so I don't mind the quirks of the BMW. Cheers!

Was that a welded drive extension you were using during the broken bolt extraction? Heck yes! I love it. Nice work my friend. Holding up well. Impressive
Dude, just came across your channel. You're a legend mate. That exhaust could put itself back on itself own as its been off so many times. Just brilliant how you overcome the challenges you come across Keep up the great videos. 👍💯
I had a bunch of BMWs, and all of them were insanely dependable, despite how i drove most of them. Multiple e38s, i6 and v8, e36, e34, both gasoline and diesel. They were great cars. None of them were perfect, but none of them had serious issues either. The devil is always in the details though, and old and complicated cars can always break, no matter how good they once were. I decided to sell the last BMW i owned though, because it was a hobby that became very expensive in the last few years, people are out of their mind with the prices for parts that should cost 4x less, and the community also fell apart. I mean back in the days i gladly had a chat with a fellow BMW owner, and that's definitely not the case anymore. Back then we all worked on our cars, but now i only hear "i paid €400 for chip tuning" while they are being completely illiterate, i believe most of them couldnt even do an air filter change 😂😂
Simon, you are perseverance itself 38:40 - Rock Auto fridge magnet collection is priceless. holy cow the cable/car jack bushing install is epic - I salute you sir 54:40 - that is one quiet and smooth ride when you got it fixed up.
Nice work on a nasty job! Those who don't have the pleasure of working on older, rust belt cars don't know what they're missing! Enjoyed watching you figure out the bushing press, have to do such things on occasion!
First time saw you that pissed in the video. We once owned that car, but with a smaller engine, manual. Then the gearbox died and father sold it before the nightmare. Though it was my first Real Car experience after soviet tanks. I didn't even have a licence back then. Now my brother has modern model 5 and lots of weird issues.
Yeah, fortunately it was pretty easy. Once I spent a day pulling the tank on an e30 to access the fuel sending unit, not realizing until it was out that there’s the access panel under the rear seat and it could’ve taken me 5 minutes.
Nun ja, erfinderisch ist er ja. Nur blöd, wenn man die neuen Lager mit Fett einschmiert, gehen diese in kürzester Zeit wieder kaputt. Hätte man lieber Vaseline oder andere Treibmittel.

I spent 8 hours today to fix my BMW. And now I'm watching another guy fixing his BMW😅
Live is brutal

Thank you very much. Yes, you're exactly right. It came from British Columbia originally, we bought it right near the border of Minnesota and Canada.
Some fresh new bushings from the fridge. Loved it man. Hugs from Portugal.
Oil based grease decays rubber! you must only apply silicon based grease on the rubber parts!

We used to use a soldering iron ( heated by a oxy flame ) with a stick of solder to repair fuel tanks like that same as fixing radiator type
Your roads are heavily salted in the winter I guess? I do think you will be Canonised some time soon. 😇 Obviously a living Saint. 😉
In the zone, working there and then, fantastic job.

We get all the crap European vehicles. Over there much is diesel and built way better.
Well 80's BMW's were very tough and reliable. And working on them isn't that bad. The new one's...not so much.

Use silicone on the bleeder valves for the calipers. They wont rust and easy to peel off when needed
Dang!, that winter salt really eats up the cars over there!😮
I loved your video, such a nice editing. Subscribed your channel, I hope you continue on this E28, would love to see next episodes.

I'm impressed BMW included a drain plug on the fuel tank. Too bad they didn't make the tank out of plastic...
Absolutely positively outstanding!
